Tacos: Carne Asada - Charbroiled Arrachera Skirt Steak, Cilantro-Chimichurri, Pico De Gallo Al Pastor - Pork Shoulder, Homemade Guajillo-Adobo Marinade, Pickled Red Onion, Habanero And Grilled Pineapple Pescadito taco - Battered Cod Fish, Lettuce, Chipotle Mayo And La Mejikãna Garnishings 2. La Stuffed Piña - Charbroiled Pineapple Stuffed With A Creamy Seafood Mix Of Shrimp, Octopus And Surimi I got the tacos and my friend the stuffed pineapple. I felt the tacos were excellent. I would prefer corn tortilla but not a big deal. The meat was tender, good flavor combo overall, and generous portions across my three tacos. My friend liked his stuffed pineapple. I tried a little and it didn't taste overwhelming and the seafood was properly cooked. The guacamole and free chips were both very good. Service was good. Decent amount of seating inside.

We lived in Phoenix for more than a decade. They have a lot of options for great Mexican food. In Chicago, we're looking for a fews that hit craving for good food with an ambiance. La Mejikana was on my list to check out and we finally went there for lunch. The restaurant was smaller than I expected. It wasn't busy, so we expected a good service. It was so-so. We placed our orders. The food took a little longer to come but it was worth the wait. The food was delicious. We will be back despite the lack of service, so 3.5 stars.

La Mejikana is a fun, modern twist on the neighborhood taco spot. It is decorated with splashes of color, vibrant themes, and displays cool Mexican art. The drinks are similarly colorful and eye catching. Flavored margaritas with fresh fruit juices kick things off. The food keeps you wanting to come back. The guac and salsas are fresh and the tacos are super tasty. Enjoy some drinks and dinner for a fun night out, or grab tacos to go if it's a chill night at home.

Great spot just a few steps off the main strip of 18th Street. We came on a holiday and they were open and weren't too busy, we were seated immediately. The music was authentically Mexican and the vibes were great. Their cocktail menu was great with several mezcal mixed drinks, as well some rotating seasonal drinks. My appetizer of corn in a cup was slightly underwhelming but my main entree was incredible. I ordered the stuffed pineapple which was a cooked half pineapple with a seafood chowder inside. The flavor was savory and they brought bread and Mexican rice as sides. It definitely filled me up and was decently priced. My partner who is Mexican thought it was authentic which is a great compliment. I will be back to try out different menu items.

This place was soooo good! I came with a friend on a wednesday night around 5/6pm, it wasn't very crowded so we were seated right away (it did start getting a little more full later though). The server was super friendly, the ambiance was nice, chill vibes. We both ordered the quesabirria tacos, which were delicious and had great flavor. I also got the tamama-rindo cosmo cocktail which really surprised me. The tamarind flavor was really pronounced, with just the right sweetness to balance it out. I also asked for mezcal instead of vodka, which I think was the right choice. Honestly, I don't think my usual cocktail bars will ever taste the same anymore because this was just so much better. This is a place I would go back to, both for the food and the drinks. I would definitely recommend it and hope to be there again.

Honestly, I think I've been here before, but I had them bookmarked and stopped by again last night an hour before they were too close. We had no issues parking right in front. We walked in and were able to sit wherever we wanted. The place was packed and jumping with other customers. The menu was kind of hectic. They have a variety of items that should please everyones pallet. We ordered 2 of the Quesa Birria tacos, and 1 order of 3 steak tacos to go. For drinks, we got the watermelon margaritas. Everything was freshly prepared and came out hot pretty quickly. Our meat was bland. It wasn't bursting with flavors as I expected, same with the steak tacos. They were bland and basic nothing to write home about. For this area, I expected more honestly. I'd come back for drinks and the music, but I'd pass on the food unless I was starving.

No complaints! We literally lovvveeedddd everything and plan to return! The beef was so seasoned and juicy! ...my mouth is watering thinking about those tacos! Shrimp quesadillas were fresh and tasty! So much flavor in each bite! Cocktails, refreshing and delicious! Another Pilsen gem! Our server recommended our order! Great service, cool vibe and clean.

Found this gem while in search for birria tacos and this did not disappoint! Ordered for pickup, and it was ready in 15 minutes, so fast! Really cute spot, dimly lit, loud music, good vibes. We got the chips and salsa to start! Chips were great. I really like spicy things but the salsa that comes with the chips was sooooooo hot. It was fine until I took one bite and had to chug milk! I would recommend getting the green salsa verde if you can't handle spicy! I then got the quesabirria tacos and these were soooooo good. These are stuffed full, and have sooo much flavor. I can't wait to come back here. I would get the quesabirria tacos again and again!

My friend recommended me come here, the food are delicious and I have order La Sandi that awesome. The food keeps you wanting to come back. Bartenders are cool.

In 2023, I set a goal to visit one "new-to-me" Mexican restaurant each month. These restaurants have been around for years, but for some reason, I've never visited.  La Mejikana in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood was a fabulous choice for the list! The food was so good, I visited twice within one month. There's a nice local neighborhood vibe. The best part about going during the weeknight is there's tons of street parking. If you arrive after 6pm on a weeknight, chances are you'll miss the meter maid and you could try to skip paying the parking meter.  One issue I did have at the restaurant is they use QR codes to access the website. Even though I have the latest iPhone and on the Verizon cellular network, I had no cellular service. That happened during both visits. My husband has the latest Android, but is also on the Verizon network, and he had a very slow connection, but eventually was able to access the menu.  Since I didn't want to wait, I asked the waiter to provide us a printed menu.  On to the food - again, everything was great and the flavors were bursting. I ate the Tampiqueña, which is a medium-well charbroiled skirt steak garnished with chimichurri salsa, and includes the papa frita (spiraled potatoes) and frijoles charros. This meal also include a traditional cheese enchilada. My husband ate the Pollito Ahogado which includes a prosciutto and chihuahua stuffed grilled chicken breast in creamy poblano salsa, Mexican styled rice, black beans and the papa frita. La Mejikana is a great place to go for happy hour or date night. There's only a few entrees on the menu, but there's plenty of shareables that would allow you to taste the whole menu.

Went to La Mejikana over the weekend for dinner. It was busy inside and barely tables available, however there were many available outside. It's very loud inside, it's basically a club (they had a dj). Outside seating it's more on the quieter side so we were happy for that. And the outside decor is super cute! The food is always a hit- we ordered shrimp ceviche which was decent and tacos that were very tasty! They have an interesting drinks and the ones we chose we enjoyed! Definitely recommend this restuarant!

The food was mediocre. The service wasn't great either. The worse part was that there was already a %20 gratuity added to the bill. There was no notification that we would be obligated to pay this tip regardless of service. I won't be going back.

If you're looking for amazing birria tacos this is your spot, these tacos were SO GOOD I would without a doubt make the hour drive out the next time I'm craving them. Also tried the queso fundido which was amazing. Took the leftovers home and they were still amazing the next day. The food came out quickly and the staff was super friendly. The place looks like a little hole in the wall restaurant from outside but has a lot of character when you walk in - great music and decor. Prob one of my fav Mexican spots now.

I seen la Mejikana on a couple of Chicago's best burger lists so I ordered a carry out order to check them out for myself. Normally I dine in when reviewing a dish, but I guess this time was the exception. Once I got to the restaurant to pick up my order I wish I would've dined in, because they had a dj mixing great music, people dancing, drinks flowing, and overall appeared to be a vibe. I was met at the door by the hostess and he promptly checked on my order. I can't really judge the service with such little interaction, but the interaction I had was great. Now on to the food... I ordered queso fundido for take out like a dumbass. I guess I didn't consider how it would be served and how quick it would get cold. I ended up heating it up the next day on my stove top, and it still tasted good. The carne asada taco came with a decent serving of steak, home made tortilla, grilled/pickled red onion, and cherry tomatoes. The taco was kinda pricey at $5, but it was tasty and surprisingly filling. The burger was better than I expected, and within the top 10 best burgers in the city, especially considering the size and price. The burger patty itself was seasoned well and cooked as requested (medium rare) which was impressive for how thick of a patty it was. The cheese was rich and complimented the guacamole, egg, and dressing. The burger was as messy as it was delicious, so don't stain your shirt. The bun was fresh but nothing special. Overall, I thought the burger was great and tasted like a premium burger that you would get from a bbq spot in Texas. This burger is in a class of its own and is not quite as artisan as au cheval, loyalist, Gretel, and little bad wolf; however, this burger is also half the price than the other burgers that I listed. I was happy with the quantity, quality, and price of la Mejikana and I will be back soon for drinks, dancing, and to try different food options. I recommend you check them out yourself!

I've been here a couple of times as well as had things delivered. Overall, great place! I have tried my best to try different things when I come and everything has honestly been pretty freaking delicious! As far as drinks goes, we have had some of their margaritas, speacialty margartias, oaxacan old fashions, and of course, some good old horchat. Every single cocktail/drink has been carefully crafted and delicious! This also extends to their food. From the chips and salsa, to the roasted corn, to their meats. The salsa ACTUALLY has a good spice to it (unlike other places where they say it's spicy but it isnt really...). My partner's go to is also the quesabirrias, which are in fact juicy and delicious. I have tried their chicken, tampiquena, asada in various formats and it has all been on point! The bigger plates, like the tampiquena are in fact, BIG plates. So order carefully! Their cemitas are probably a safe smaller bite that really packs a savory punch in every bite! Overall, I looked forward to trying some more of their dishes and drinks and encourage everyone to pay this place a visit!

I actually visited this spot on 7/23/23 before the Beyoncé concert. I wanted Mexican food and this place fit the bill. Upon entering a guy sat me and guest promptly. The decor is contemporary, fresh. The same greeter brought over chips and salsa which were good. The server came afterwards and took our order. He was nice, pleasant. The restroom, place was clean. Even though this place was crowded, the food came out within minutes. We ordered the queso birria tacos plus a side of rice. It was delicious times 3. The el churrito is a masterpiece. The guac was delicious and on point. I really enjoyed this experience and I'll be back no doubt.

Went to this local Pilsen bar and restaurant for lunch, per on recommendation from a fellow restauranteur friend of mine that owns a business down the street. Friendly service, sat at a comfortable booth next to the window in the front. Chips with homemade salsa served upon arriving, ordered the mushroom empanada, the Al pastor Cemita, and three tacos(pollo, carne asada, and pescado). For someone who does not care too much for mushroom, the empanada, laced with corn and other fresh ingredients, was very tasty. The cemita had excellent flavor, as did the tacos, my only suggestion would be to have confidence that your meat is flavored and perfect just the way it is. The chipotle mayo was slightly overused and dressed on everything, and truth be told, your food is wonderful in its authentic form. Salud!

Very welcoming place ! The staff was super friendly and very helpful in recommending food. I order the Carne en su Jugo and it was very well made. The michelada were made very well also! DJ was very good as well! Would definitely recommend this place!

This review is based on a limited representation of this establishment. I visited this past weekend as part of the Brewja crawl. The offered drink was vodka lemonade- decent portion but I would have liked to see some creativity from what appears to be a great bar in the area. They also sold tequila cranberry shots in syringes- great presentation with color and vessel but not a creative Halloween shot. The true standout was the back patio which was well decorated, covered and had a pretty good DJ. The crowd was feeling the vibes and I hated to leave as we still had almost 10 spots left to go!

Cute little spot in Pilsen. It was pretty busy even on Monday night. The music was loud, the ambiance was nice, but the service was a little slow. We got tacos, some birria tacos and chicken wings. Our favorite were the tacos with the cherry tomatoes. Tasted simple and delicious. We also loved how aesthetically pleasing they looked!

We went out of our way (45 minutes) to go to this place and it was amazing. The carne asada tacos and flan churro was amazing! Absolutely fantastic.

The best quesabirria tacos I've ever had are located here. When i visited on a late Saturday night, they were already at max capacity in the dive bar, so I ordered my food to go. There was a DJ and everyone seemed to be having a blast, and the bar was busy and full. I ordered through Google, and my order came about 5-10 minutes after it said it was completed, so don't feel the need to be on time when getting a to-go order. The staff was friendly and responsive, albeit busy. As for the tacos, they were nothing short of phenomenal. The beef was tender and flavored very well, the tacos didn't fall apart upon dipping it in the broth, and weren't wildly greasy / oily.

This place was a good time overall - if you haven't been, I would recommend trying it. The food was good, the service was nice, and the music was awesome (haha). Our food/server did take a little bit (I think they forgot about us) but once they noticed they apologized tremendously and made up for it with better service! Their drinks are cool looking and taste flavorful. The food was plenty and was definitely full afterwards. I wish I was able to drink more and try more cool looking drinks but I was full and had two great drinks. We went on a Saturday (during brunch's hours) and it was packed but they still did whatever they could to help us get a table, so I appreciated that tremendously! Also, they had a new drink or sampling something, so they were handing out mini free sample cocktails. Always something beautiful - free drinks! Personal Review: 7.8/10

La Mejikana is a bar that serves semi expensive food and specialty cocktails. I do wish they held happy hour and would turn up the heat in the building. I came here for a Friday night outting and decided to order the Alita wings and the La Chata cocktail. Fun fact: the La Chata is the owner's favorite cocktail. I chose it because it has cucumber and dark liquor (Jack Daniels) in it, which is an odd pairing but I wanted to give it a go. It was quite tasty and has a smidge of a Smokey after taste. Definitely not sweet or super strong. You can enjoy it while eating. I just would ask for less ice next time. The wings were really good and tender. The meat practically fell off the bone. However the sauce was trash and the pineapples did not compliment the wings. I would've preferred them just putting the wings on the plate like a normal bar. The pricing was pretty on brand for Pilsen since the change of the neighborhood. My meal was $25, maybe $32 with tax and tip. For an app and one cocktail that's a bit much in my opinion. I'd return for drinks and nothing more. I can't have a bar that serves American Mexican food up charge me. Not worth it.

I don't even know where to start... I haven't written a review in a long time, but I am here to write a review on my experience at La Mejikana. I will never return, but it feels like they didn't want me to anyway. We wanted to grab dinner before a show. My fiancé wanted a burger. He saw this place and wanted to give it a try. Let me start by saying that I live in the Garfield Ridge area. I do not live in Pilsen. However, I have frequented places in Pilsen lots of times. This time, things were different. We sat at the bar and ordered a couple of drinks. The bartender would barely speak to us. He had a compass tattooed on his neck for reference. Of course he didn't tell us his name. He mumbled and acted odd. I didn't really understand at first. Eventually, I got it. The color of my skin was wrong. My age was wrong. I was wrong for being in there in the first place is the feeling I had when I left. I inquired about the cemitas. I asked about the chicken and the al pastor. He said the chicken. I asked why. He said because he grew up eating fried chicken and he likes it. It was terrible. the chicken was dry and burned. All I could taste is the avocado, chipotle mayo and the bread. There was hardly any cheese on it at all, which is odd for a cemita. I ate it, but I was telling him that it wasn't enjoyable. He said I would have recommended the steak, but you didn't say that as an option. Um........................................................... smh. We ordered a second round of drinks, but since we were running short on time, we ordered doubles. He poured said doubles into pint glasses, which is fine. However, there wasn't any ice in them and just completely filled with soda water. I said to him that I assumed he would have made the doubles in the same glass that he made the single in. He said "double the alcohol, double the soda water." I said that's not usually how doubles are made. He then says that if I had said "double the alcohol and soda, I would have made it in the same glass." Excuse me, it's my fault? I have worked in the restaurant business for years and years. That's not how it works. I said this isn't what I ordrered. He said sorry, walked away and then got on his phone with his buddies sitting at the bar and completely ignored me. I sat there for a few minutes and got the attention of the other bartender. I told him I don't want this drink. This is not what I ordered. Just give me my check. The original bartender hands me a check, which included $40 for those two drinks. Now, I am mad. I stood up and said I am not paying for these drinks. It's not what I ordered and I didn't drink them. The second bartender said ok. I get the new check from the first bartender and I told him I didn't appreciate how he has treated me and he has the nerve to say, " What did I do?" I said you treated me like SHIT! The burger was ok. Nothing special. I can make the same thing in my kitchen. Don't go here.

Came here one night with my boyfriend and he only eats authentic Mexican food. We gave this restaurant a try and thank the Lord we did. Everything we ordered was delicious. The atmosphere was great and the interior design was a rusty brick wall vibe with paintings hanging with great music. Food: 3 tacos (al pastor, pescadito, and carne asada), ceviche de camaron, and another 3 tacos (al pastor). Everything was delicious but just pricy. Drinks: Mango margarita (delicious) and Modelo Negra. I would definitely come back for the tacos and the ceviche. When you are craving Mexican food, definitely give this place a try.

Best birria tacos I have ever had! Stopped by after picking up my racing packet for La Carrera de Los Muertos, and had a wonderful lunch! Both me and my husband had the delicious birria tacos with churros. Can't wait to go back. Very affordable highly authentic food!

Came here on a Friday night at around 630 so my friend and I were able to grab a table without waiting. After we got seated though, there was probably only a table left and a line was starting to form. The ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for grabbing dinner and drinks with friends and/or having a date night. To start off the night we ordered some margaritas, I ended up getting the mango margarita while my friend ordered the guava. Both were really good but I think I may have favored the guava one better! We got some elote la mejikana to share and it was delicious. The corn was cooked to perfection and had the perfect crunch. The seasoning was just right and tasted like an original elote. For the main dish I ended up ordering 3 tacos. I got the carne asada, pollito adobado, and the lomito planchado. Everything was delicious! My favorite was probably the lomito planchado because it had the grilled panela cheese on top of the marinated ribeye with a slice of green apple (which was the perfect touch to it). I could probably eat 10 of those! Overall, I highly recommend coming here! The vibes, the food, and the drinks are amazing!

Decided to try this place out with my friends before a Blackhawks game and wow- I think I found my favorite Mexican restaurant in Pilsen. I had the pollito ahogado without the prosciutto and it was absolutely delicious. I don't eat pork so I was very pleased they were able to make this dish for me without prosciutto. The poblano salsa on the chicken was very good. They gave me 3 small tortillas on the side and I was able to make small tacos from the rice, beans, and chicken. The fried potato was also a great treat. And I can't forget about the the elote. It was so good that I had to get a second portion to go. The handcrafted alcoholic drink I got was also very good. I will definitely be back here!

This was definitely a fun night out! Food and drinks were delicious! The live DJ was a blast and played some good music. The only issue was of course you couldn't hear what anyone else was saying. We all shared empanadas, different tacos, Al pastor wings, and this amazing flan and churros dessert. I had a horchata too which was great. The food was fresh and the vibe was very fun. A fun place to come out with a group of people.

The only complaint is that a 45min wait for a table, turned into 120min. That said it was a Friday and crazy busy. Food was amazing. Cannot say anything about that. Our shots were watered down but we only had one and didn't go for anything but the food and drinks, which did not disappoint. I'd def go back and have lomo again. Maybe just not on a Friday.

Been trying to make it out here for a while and finally had the chance! My friend and I came for lunch on a Sunday and it was not too busy. We were a little confused if it was a seat yourself situation so we just went to sit at the bar. Service was great at the bar and we got all our stuff. The passion fruit margarita was yummy but I was too full to finish. I have the quesa birria tacos and my friend had some veggie based tacos and elote. We also shared the churros de flan. Over all decent!

Went here with a friend and I was so hungry! I appreciated the chips and salsa that they served us as appetizers and the ambiance was fun! High energy on a Friday evening and it was a full house. The waitress was friendly and attentive, she was very helpful. The food was yummy! I would recommend.

One of my favorite Mexican places in the city! The first time I went, we were welcomed with tequila shots on the house! The margaritas are so delicious and you can't go wrong with any of the flavors as they're freshly made! The tortilla is also sourced from a local bakery and is delicious. I got the veggie taco last time and loved it. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the food and drinks at this place. We have taken a number of our friends and family here and they also enjoy it! The inside is nice and welcoming with some bar seating as well! I haven't been to the outdoor seating, but it seems like a nice area! We've never had to wait too long when we're done walk in!

I ate lunch in a Michelin star restaurant, then I came to La Mejikana a few hours later for dinner. It blew away the Michelin star restaurant. There is an elusive goal to any 'upscale Mexican' restaurant; to deliver a plate that feels like your Mexican mom just cooked it up in the kitchen. For whatever reason, it is never quite the same. I would say La Mejikana gets closer to it than any other place I've eaten at. The flavors of the enchiladas are amazing. The meat was absolutely perfectly cooked. The spiral potato deal was great for looks but just kind of tasted like chips. I didn't hate it though. The salsa was flavorful and has a kick. The beans were an unexpected stand out as well. Service and atmosphere was great. I didn't get any drinks this time but the bar looks well-stocked. I look forward to returning when they have coffee and more dessert options.

DINNER AND DRINKS & FUN! Visiting from NYC with a a friend who lives downtown! I found this place on yelp? I went and god was I satisfied! The drinks Strong and delicious The music LOUD & dancing! The FOOD! CRAZIEST FLAVORED STEAK AND CHIPS I BAD! Mouth watering next time I'm in Chicago I will be getting it Again! The staff & owner are EXTREMELY RESPECTFUL & friendly! Very clean establishment also.

Hola! God is good! After the debacle in Vegas on Sunday, He blessed us with this place. Bring your paycheck, you will want to try EVERYTHING on the menu. They dropped the chips and salsa. Bueno. I had the steak, with blue corn tortilla. Burno. LosDoubles had the fish tacos, Pollo Asada, and braised beef birria. Bueno. Let's talk about the frijoes. The smokiness, the bacon, and the chorizo.... We tapped out at $126 for three. Two double tequilas. It was a wonderful Taco Tuesday. Gracias Martin, and crew. See ya next week! #Guadalajara

My first time here and I had a great experience. The manager and my server was excellent. The ambiance of the patio was very nice and comfortable. The food was really good. The drinks I really liked. For starters... I had spicy pineapple guacamole... the pineapple gave it just the pinch of sweetness that we desired. Need a bit more lime and salt. But good overall. Empanadas I ordered mezcal shrimp and mushroom....both were delicious but the shrimp were more impressionable. I wanted both options because some days I am flexitarian..LOL. Dinner we had... birria tacos...which were beautifully prepared because they weren't dry. The consome juice was tasty... and seafood pina which was cheesy and perfectly made. The octopus and shrimp weren't overcooked which was a good thing. The margaritas were all very enjoyable and you can taste the alcohol. The table chips and dip courtesy of course but I would have enjoyed a spicer salsa maybe even a pico de gallo. The Tequila flight gave complimentary clamato....how serious is that!!! (claps hands) clean your palate between shots. The dessert flan churros was super tasty as the manager described the caramel as being made fresh daily with goat milk and I must say it was creamy and delicious. The flan was a perfect consistency. I was already stuffed but I enjoyed this dessert also as the churros were hot and fresh. As I was leaving a live Dj was there playing music.

Went here with 3 of my friends. Our third spot on a taco crawl. Definitely my favorite. Dig the music and back patio. The service was perfect everyone was hella nice. The birria tacos were . My friends got pastor, carne asada and shrimp tacos. Their favorite were the carne asada and pastor. They especially like the pineapple on the pastor tacos. Unfortunately they felt underwhelmed by the shrimp taco. Drinks: I loved the cucumber michelada and got mine with a little spice. I dig spicy, and felt it was barely spicy for those of you that like a kick. The cucumber was the game changer. My friends dug the margaritas especially the cucumber margarita.

This place made it on a list of best burgers in Chicago. To its advantage it is a pretty good burger however ranking it with some of Chicago's best is a stretch. Again to its advantage I had it for takeout which does take away something in my opinion but the reason for the merely 3 stars is a lack of consistency. The good aspect of the burger is the bites where you get everything simultaneously. Easier said than done but the burger itself is sort of flavorless & a tad dry. Now those wonderful bites with everything could rank it amongst the best but I digress. At about $14 it's definitely on the lower end of prices. I'm willing to say it's probably one of the best things in the area of pilsen & in such close proximity to south loop.

The food here is pretty good, I ordered the aguachile verde and the quesabirria tacos. It was my first time having aguachile verde and I loved it! Going to come back and order the mango habanero one. I also got the quesabirria tacos and they were bomb, the consume was really good. For dessert I got the flan churros, the flan wasn't my favorite but the churros were good and stayed warm. I could do without the drizzle caramel on top though, a bit too sweet for me. Overall service was a little slow only because there was only one waiter.

Went on a random Monday night. Service 5 star Food 5 star price 5 star. Must try one Monday when nearly everything is closed in Pilsen. We ate at the various, and the bartender was some of the best service I've had in a while. Great ambitious.

Me and my girl went in on a Friday as a part of an anniversary celebration. The food was on point, and the mezcal shot deal was even better (3 for $20) It was very loud but we didn't know they had a live DJ and hosted events on the particular Friday we went. Aside from the loud music in the lounge/eating area it was fine
