1880 Saloon Review - Los Alamos - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"There will come a point during your night in Los Alamos when all the restaurants and tasting rooms close up and you’ll wonder what happens next. The answer is 1880 Saloon. This rowdy bar on the ground floor of the Union Hotel is not just the only place in town that’s open past 9pm, it’s also the most debaucherous spot you’ll encounter all weekend. Originally built in 1880, destroyed in a fire in 1893, then rebuilt (and reopened) in 1915, this historic saloon is where every night owl in town goes for fantastic people-watching, ill-advised rounds of whiskey shots, and conversations no one will remember in the morning." - Brant Cox

This old joint is overseen by Kurt Russell and was cool before Los Alamos became cool. Play a game of pool, have a whiskey, and brush elbows with the locals.

Went to my granddaughter's wedding over the weekend. The property looked amazing. The staff went over and above to make it a wonderful occasion. The food was excellent as well. All in all, having the wedding here was excellent. I definitely would recommend this place for an event. Thanks again for a wonderful time.

So amazing inside… what a great venue to have a party, wedding or murder mystery event!!

Extremely beautiful place hidden away didn't get to use the speak easy bar but it looked amazing. If you like history and old stuff go into the library up stairs and check out the really old books and antique 3D goggles like the red Viewmaster 3D toy everyone has as a kid but the turn of the century version.

My wife and I are wedding photographers and have always LOVED working at the 1880. It's definitely one of the best wedding venues in OC/LA area. The experience has always been a positive one for us with all the couples who've hired us. Definitely recommend!

One of my favorite wedding venues! I've been lucky enough to photograph 3 weddings here now and every single time I've been, the staff is wonderfully welcoming, the space is immaculate, and the guests have an outstanding time! THE FOOD IS AMAZING! If you're looking for a weekend getaway space for your family to stay while you celebrate your marriage and you LOVE a good elegant vintage design, this is YOUR PLACE!!! Here are a few photos from the most recent winter wedding, when the leaves were changing colors! (All photos by Alexandria Monette Photography)

This is for the cool old school 1800’s bar next door. The min you walk in you feel like your in 1887 or some year before technology took over. The beer was cold, bartender was cool and had normal pool table in the back. Place opens at 4pm so time your trip accordingly so you don’t miss out on this gem in Los Alamos

This place was fun to visit! My wife and I visited on a Sunday morning after seeing the long line at Bob's bakery, and we were rewarded with friendly service, a great bloody mary, and a delicious tri-tip breakfast sandwich. The saloon is narrow but deep, and contains a ton of character. It's a shame that the public can't view the hotel that compromises the majority of the historic building, but I understand why. Great place to start a day of exploring and wine tasting.

Attended a wedding here. The staff was both professional and friendly, and the location was gorgeous.

Yelp
My husband and I have been coming to Los Alamos for 10 years and knew we wanted to get married at 1880 Union. With beautiful lush green grounds and an amazing renovated hotel that sleeps 16 and saloon bar - we loved the venue and our wedding weekend was memorable. However, our experience was severely marred by the venue's management, particularly the day-to-day manager (Kerri), whose performance significantly detracted from the overall charm of the venue. *Issues with Management:* 1. *Responsiveness:* The manager was notably slow and often unresponsive leading up to the wedding. This lack of communication persisted until the last minute, causing unnecessary stress and uncertainty. Critical information about venue policy, preference, and process was withheld until the last minute when decisions had already been made and implemented. 2. *Chaotic Interaction:* When the manager did respond, their communications were disorganized and riddled with errors. These were not just minor oversights but significant mistakes that jeopardized the smooth running of our event. 3. *Problem Handling:* Instead of addressing mistakes openly, there was a tendency to conceal them or shift blame onto other parties, at times to an almost laughable extent. This lack of accountability was unprofessional and damaging to the trust required in such a crucial role. 4. *Overstepping Boundaries:* The manager made unauthorized decisions with vendors, directly affecting our event's outcomes negatively. These actions were not within her purview and caused confusion and conflict. 5. *Courtesy:* Her interaction with hotel guests, our wedding attendees, and other service providers was consistently rude and unhelpful. This behavior is unacceptable in a hospitality role, especially during such significant events. We overheard her saying to our planner and vendors, "We have done enough for this couple" - which is incredibly disrespectful after we've paid over 20k to host our wedding at the venue. 7. *Cost-Cutting Measures:* The manager engaged in cost-cutting practices that were detrimental to us, notably mismanaging resources such as serving wine meant specifically for table service at the bar, which breached our agreement and imposed additional costs on us. 6. *Proactivity:* There was a noticeable absence of effort in anticipating or solving problems - causing unnecessary issues that required us and our planner to address at the last minute. *Final Thoughts:* While the venue is excellent, the management leaves much to be desired. The myriad issues stemming from poor management practices heavily overshadow the venue's positive aspects. We must advise other potential customers to reconsider hosting significant events here while the current manager remains in charge, as the risk of experiencing similar challenges is considerable.

Yelp
So, the Union Hotel is a beautiful place, wonderful venue, food was great, and the wait staff, security and bartenders were fantastic. HOWEVER, the wedding planner(theirs) was basically missing in action. Not really any help with logistics, did not show up until 2 hours before the ceremony, didn't come at all the day after the ceremony or leave a note about where their cake was or anything else, didn't return emails, didn't plan for rain, didn't save any of the leftover food even though it was specifically requested... and this was an added mandatory $2000. Like I said, beautiful place, but definitely insist on your own wedding planner.

Yelp
Last year after Thanksgiving day we went there. This is a Historical place. We took many pictures in front of the hotel. Enjoy a lot. My husband and our friends enjoyed it too. We all had a good memory from their.

Yelp
My husband and I had our wedding here at 1880 Union Hotel in December. We couldn't have asked for a better venue. It so unique, historic, and full of energy. It was so special for us to be able to rent out the space for a complete 48 hours. I remember when we were looking for venues, it was incredibly hard to find a venue that allotted for more time than just 4-6 hours. We did not want that. We wanted to spend more time with our family and friends on our big day, thus we made a whole WEDDING WEEKEND. Plus there are accommodations for your guests within 1880 and in the immediate surrounding areas via motels or Air bnb. (see previous reviews re: Los Alamos Motel- not helpful) (Our guests enjoyed staying at Skyview Motel too) Ben and Ally are EXCEPTIONAL to work with. They were honest, fair, helpful, responsive, creative, calm, experienced, extremely organized, and made sure that we were happy and comfortable with everything. From the initial site visit, to the tasting, to the actual wedding everything was more than I could have ever expected. Ally also provided us a list of vendors which made the process of narrowing down different vendors from DJ, photographer, desserts, flowers, and more much easier. We ended up using Ally's recommendation of Damian as our DJ and Melissa from Solvang Bakery for our desserts and wedding cake. Plus, you get Ally as the day of coordinator included in the fee and the opportunity to upgrade if you want her more involved throughout the planing stage too. The food and drinks were amazing too! Our guests were so impressed. Chef Josh and the Bar Team made the experience so easy, fun, and tasty! We opted for three passed HD's, a buffet dinner, two specialty drinks, wine and beer, and a late night snack. Our guests were raving about everything! Again, we were so thankful too have such a supportive, experienced, passionate, fun, positive, and flexible team to work with as we planned our Wedding Weekend. Every step of the way they each did everything they could to ensure we were happy with every aspect of our weekend. If you are looking for a venue that is NOT cookie cutter and where you can actually show your personality and your flair, you could not go wrong with 1880 union and their team. Our memories from our wedding will last a lifetime. Thank you!!!!

Yelp
1880! We are speechless. Our wedding was on 8/10/19, and 1880 was our perfect venue and a dream come true for our wedding day. The venue is such a unique gem in the area- the ambiance, decor, the rooms, the exterior- it's like something out of a book! When we started our venue search, the most important thing for us was having overnight accommodations on-site for the weekend. We wanted to stretch our wedding day out as longgg as we could, and not feel rushed in/out of our venue especially because most of our family/friends were coming in from the East Coast. It took us 4 months before we stumbled upon 1880, and it was SO worth the wait! We loved waking up with our friends and family there for the big day. The set up is also the best- the rooms are all upstairs in a circle around a lounge with game rooms, a kitchenette, etc. A perfect hangout! And as the bride, I could NOT have had a better experience- a giant room equipped with a huge bathtub all to myself all weekend to unwind.... yesss, please! :) On the wedding day, the backdrop was perfect for getting ready with our crew- so many rooms to tuck into! Additionally, once our guests arrived, they were 100% loving the energy of the place. We used the gazebo for our ceremony space- it's beautiful and feels so intimate- and we used the brick patio with string lights for the reception- which was so dreamy and romantic for our dinner and dance party! We also loved that we could steer the party next door to the Saloon when the night ended (avoiding that transporting to the bar buzzkill!) Additionally, the staff was SO nice. Ben/Jordan, Aly/Jess, the Chef Josh, Juan... all incredible people. Jordan was ready to help us with whatever we needed around the venue, Jess and her assistant kept us so seamlessly on our schedule like a bunch of secret service agents, Juan was the most attentive soul we've ever met, and Chef Josh threw down some absolutely amazing food! Not to mention, Josh also made us some off-menu items we requested and totally nailed them! Los Alamos itself is also SO fun! It's so cool because your wedding kind of takes over the town, and it's like being in a small village with all your loved ones. All our guests had an amazing time exploring wineries and spots to eat in Los Alamos and SY valley. Our weekend was perfect. We love this venue and still feel so lucky to have been married here!

Yelp
We went through this little town yesterday and stopped in here. I love the history of this place. Great atmosphere and the portabello mushroom burger was wonderful. This place is a historical treasure. They have plenty of seating a great friendly bartender who served us our meal and a variety of yummy foods. This will be a go to place for sure in the future. They also have a nice pool table in the back. I really enjoyed the stories of this place. What a treat on our weekend getaway.

Yelp
I'm rating the 1880 as both a venue and a hotel. I had the pleasure of attending a wedding here and as a venue it's great. The grounds are beautiful, the location is well appointed, and it is really nice having your friends and family in one place. The venue caters to families stay overs and has an awesome game Room and movie watching area upstairs in the hotel. The wedding food was mediocre but I don't know if it came from the hotel itself or an outside vendor. As an actual hotel, meaning a place for sleeping, it is absolutely TERRIBLE. The hotel is on top of a saloon which closes at 2:00 a.m.. If you plan on getting it any sleep then do not stay here! Unfortunately our room was directly above the saloon so we get the full brunt of the noise, but the saloon noise echoed throughout the entire 2nd floor of the hotel, which is where all of the rooms are located. On that note, if you have any disabled family or anyone who has issues with stairs don't put them at this hotel. Also, the hotel itself is just noisy. As lovely as the hardwood floors and Staircase is, it is noisy AF. You can literally hear an ant walk across the floorboards. If your room faces the gaming and tv area it's even worse. You get a super noisy stay in stereo! In short, the 1880 is great for a hang but if you like sleep, stay elsewhere.

Yelp
Horrible. Went to tour venue, it was filthy, I was told family members are allowed to stay while they had now events... Then Attended a tasting and was served spoiled fish, and they forgot to schedule a mixologist, and the event planner never showed, asked for another tour, again suitcases and filth in 4 of the rooms !!! I Spent 2 yrs planning an event here, they canceled 2 weeks prior and Jordan refused to refund me my 20k I'd paid for the event . I understand Covid, but every time I chose a new date, the manager Jordan told me it wasn't available, and was rude. Jordan then told me he'd spent the 20k on expenses, and refused to return my calls, they kept my money until I hired an attorney! Complete nightmare to deal with!

Yelp
Passing through Los Alamos? Stop by and check out this hotel. It's like traveling back in time to saloons and the Old West. Go out back and play with the SWEET outdoor chessboard, too. I looooove those things and I want one! Checkmate!

Yelp
Great restaurant with a really awesome ambiance. Parking was really easy, service was on point and the food was good. I came here for breakfast on a Sunday expecting the place to be really busy but it was all run really well. We were able to get a table pretty easily. The server made some great suggestions and we had a very nice breakfast. After our meal we spent a little extra time just admiring the building. Really cool interesting venue.

Yelp
This place is AMAZING. I recently officiated a wedding and stayed two nights at the hotel. The owners have done a wonderful job of fixing this place up while keeping the historic charm in tack. The fact you can stand in the very same room where Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney once shaved is worth the visit alone. The entire staff was very helpful to everyone in the wedding party. Bar lines moved quickly, this place is just awesome. If you get a chance to get married here, I truly recommend it.

Yelp
Noban and Nikki were absolutely incredible! We had a private party for a wedding, but these two made sure our entire night was AMAZING! Highly highly recommend! If you are considering a private party or wedding in the area, pick this place and request Noban and Nikki!

Yelp
We had our wedding this past weekend at the Union, and it was simply perfect. The price is very reasonable, considering you literally get the entire hotel and backyard for you, your wedding party and guests. Food is included and a coordinator as well. Aly was incredibly sweet, patient and 100% helpful. I barely had to worry about the logistics on our day because her and her assistant were on the ball. Food was amazing, glasses were never empty, the location was hauntingly beautiful, and every single guest raved about our wedding. It's not a daily hotel any more, as it now only caters to weddings, so peeking inside is next to impossible. Aly's husband, the Hotel manager (Ben) was also very helpful and accommodating throughout the entire process. Our night manager was a new kid, but super friendly. The chef always came out to greet us, and the bartenders next door spoiled my new husband and his crew throughout the weekend. I highly recommend it.

Yelp
1880 Union Hotel was the one and only venue I visited when planning my wedding. When you find the perfect place, why waste time looking for something else. We had our wedding in June 2022, but booked it Feb 2020, so I can't speak to the pricing now, but in 2020 we paid about $25K. It might sound like a hefty price tag, but you get every penny's worth and then some. Your booking of the venue comes with a 48 hour rental. You get a day of coordinating team who make everything run really smoothly. They will coordinate with your vendors so you don't even have to think about it. They also take care of the set up and clean up of your wedding, which saves you and your wedding party a ton of time. There is an in-house catering team who will create a totally customizable menu for you with the most generous amount of food. And their current chef, Chef Noban, is so awesome to work with! There is a great bar program at the venue, and Nikki will mix you up the most creative and delicious cocktails. The rental also comes with all your tables, chairs and linens. They even have yard games if you want for your guests. The venue also includes a gorgeous Bridal suite for the weekend and a really special " getting ready" room. Taxes & gratuity are also included in that price tag, There is a floor of hotel rooms for your guests/family/wedding party for a small fee, relative the the high price of the lodgings in town. It is very well equipped with almost everything you will need for your weekend stay! There's even a game room and a little kitchenette for your use! We had the most perfect wedding at this venue. It came out exactly how we envisioned. And my guest have all been telling me it was the best wedding they've ever been to! I am so grateful to the staff for helping make this wedding go easy-peasy.

Yelp
Creepy and beautiful. I felt like I was in the movie The Shining. If you are in Room 1, the iHome alarm will start beeping before the sun rises and the room is still pitch black. It doesn't matter if the display is on or not, and whether it's plugged in or not. beep beep beep. Since the clock is not even on, how do you even turn off the alarm? The snooze button will snooze and the alarm will ring 9 minutes later. beep beep beep. All you can do is hold down the power button and pray that it actually turned off the alarm and it won't beep again in 9 minutes. Then you might close your eyes and try to sleep while wondering if something is in the room watching you fuss with the unplugged iHome. The toilets are terrifying loud. The toilet paper and toiletries are great (they even have face wash and mouthwash). The lights are dim. The floors creak. The bathtub was not usable, so if you are staying in a bathtub room, you have to use the shower down the hall. The shower room has no toilet and it's dark in there. It's a great shower though. The mini arcade is cool but the screen goes crazy when you get to the boss level. Maybe the ghosts are trying to signal something. I loved playing with the fancy chess set. The common area upstairs with the long leather couches is great for chilling with friends and watching the Food Network. There is a small kitchen that is very useful and comes with several small appliances, mugs, bowls, utensils etc. The fridge will beep. I think I know how to turn it off, but I'll let you figure it out. It's so much fun trying to turn off something that keeps beeping and you have no idea why. The rooms are gorgeous. The secret entrance to the makeup room is the best. The staff was super nice, and I loved the food served at my friends' wedding. They served short rib, chicken, brussel sprouts, mac and cheese and salad. Surprisingly I enjoyed the chicken more than the short rib. It was more flavorful and more moist. I ate enough but I think they ran out of food for some people. Someone said they saw ghosts at the outside bar and other people heard knocking coming from a closet. It's definitely a unique and fun venue, with a couple of convenience stores nearby and good food around. Congratulations Hanae K. and JR. C on your wedding. They met through Yelp. Thanks Yelp!

Yelp
Place supposedly opens at 12pm. I'm there at 12:15pm, but the bartender doesn't let us in or even talks to us. I called the hotel and whoever answered said the kitchen was closed, but the bar is open. Nothing listed indicated any of that. Very rude. Impression of Los Alamos isn't good so far.

Yelp
We recently got married here and had the best experience ever. We were looking to get married in Feb. 2018 but unfortunately due to family health issues we shot-gunned the wedding and decided in May 2017 to get married in Aug. 2017. As soon as I walked into the venue I knew it was the place. Ben was EXTREMELY wonderful to work with and helped us tremendously in the short time we planned the wedding. The property is beautiful and more than I could've imagined. Food was delish and the menu can be adjust to your desire. The chef is awesome. We even had a pizza waiting for us at the end of the night which is highly recommended. :) Aly managed day of/rehearsal and was helpful and professional. The hidden room and beautiful balconies are reason enough to book it. But the saloon, I love that saloon. There was a live band that played the night of our wedding and it couldn't have been a better to end the night. LOVE!!! P.S. I agree w/ Kimmie below!! And many of these older pics of the venue are outdated; the property has been renovated and is gorgeous inside!! Hair: @dosbyjanea Make Up: @barriking DJ: @gabevega Flowers: @thebloomingypsy / @evermorefloral Photography: @ashleymaxwellphoto Just a word of caution: The hotel across the street (The Alamo) was difficult for us to work with...I don't think they like weddings and at the time of my wedding put a $750 buy out charge on top of the room costs. We called and let them know we decided against the buy out as we weren't sure if we'd be able to fill the 19 rooms available (there are cute airbnb's near, other B&B's and some family wanted to stay in Buellton) and told friends/family to just call book themselves. The hotel decided to then block our guests from booking by stating the hotel had been booked by another group, which it had not. It was a hassle but at the end of the day we did have guests book rooms as they started to open up rooms as it got closer to the wedding. I suggest either paying for the full buyout to avoid issues or simply don't call and have guests start booking and not mention anything about a wedding! Plus another hotel near by (Skyview Motel) is being renovated and will be ready to book by the time you have your wedding at this AMAZING venue!!!

Yelp
I recently stayed here for 2 nights as a bridesmaid, but I've visited once before with the bride-to-be for a tour and tasting. This hotel is only open for weddings now. Both times, the service was great, and the venue is gorgeous. I was lucky to stay in the Michael Jackson/Paul McCartney room (Room #2) for my duration, and it was a comfortable stay, with typical amenities minus room service. Friends/family stayed upstairs, and each of the rooms available were unique. There is also a kitchen, an arcade room, a game (poker) room, and a den in addition to some extra bathrooms/shower. The bridal suite is amazing and connected to the Secret Bookcase room, which is where we got ready in. There are plenty of photo ops at this venue and the food was very delicious as well! The executive chef is the same as the The Lime Truck or TLT stores. Overall a beautiful venue, and one to potentially check out if you're planning a wedding, and don't mind the distance as it's about a 3 hour drive from Los Angeles.

Yelp
Cool, creaky hotel with lots of character, worth at least a look, if not a drink, which you can drink at the bar (allegedly the only full bar in town), the cozy lobby, or the pretty side yard, which houses a gazebo and giant, functional chess set. I believe they filmed part of the "Say Say Say" music video with Michael Jackson. So watch out: late at night, you may have a ghost try to tuck your son into bed.

Yelp
Do you want a magical, delightful, delicious, romantic, unforgettable, smoothly run wedding? Then get married at the 1880 Union Hotel. I cannot say enough good things about the 1880 Union Hotel & event staff. It is the PERFECT venue for a romantic wine country wedding. Or any event, really! Good times are sure to be had, no matter what the occasion. Beautiful, versatile outdoor/indoor setting, outstanding food & drink by Chef Brooke Stockwell & Jesse Brockman, stellar planning/coordination by Aly Cokely & Amanda Loesser of Tricia Dahlgren Events, and impeccable guest/hotel services by Ben Cokely. Sam Kapcio also gets mad props for getting the ball rolling on what many of our guests are saying is the best wedding they've ever been to!! Seriously. I don't usually write (or read) lengthy reviews, but more detail is warranted as we are over the moon with how well the Union staff pulled everything off: Food & Beverage: The standard Union fare is rustic gourmet California cuisine at its finest, but Chef Brooke & Jesse can pull anything off; we wanted some southern flavors (Texas and New Orleans,) and they created several custom dishes for us including a queso bite app! (They talked me out of a queso fountain, which in retrospect would have been very unsexy , so I am grateful for that.) The Union kitchen is completely accommodating to various tastes - the only thing they won't do is use out-of-season, sub-par ingredients. Brooke's signature tri-tip is OFF THE CHAIN and a must-have at any Union Event. The specialty cocktails were fabulous and a tad off the beaten path, so our more traditional guests had fun trying something new. (Although traditional drinks can of course be done.) And obviously...killer wine. Event Planning & Coordination: Aly was our angel throughout the planning phase - so responsive, so detail oriented, so caring and thoughtful. She helped us bring several wacky New Orleans-inspired ideas to life including a 6-piece jazz band parading through town & us throwing beads from the balcony, among others. She put our minds at ease that everything was taken care of, which is all you can hope for on your wedding day - to forget all the planning and have an awesome time. On the day of the wedding, Aly brought on the lovely consummate pro Amanda, who attended to the bridal party's every need quickly and calmly, without missing a beat. In short, she kept me/us sane and I am so grateful for her presence!! The Venue & Hotel: Charming, recently renovated historic hotel with gorgeous outdoor gazebo setting for ceremony and awesome vintage details inside. Your wedding guests will never be bored because there are so many different areas and details to explore. The best part about this property is that our parents and almost the entire bridal party got to stay on the grounds all weekend, with a large common area, so it was like being in a dorm (in a great way) with all your closest loved ones all weekend. When you rent the Union for an event, you get the entire hotel to yourself! So much fun. Ben Cokely did a fabulous job with all of the room assignments and guests services - it was a lot of moving parts and he was consistently attentive, reliable, and always with a smile on his face. Not to mention he and Aly are just the cutest couple! I could go on and on, but I think that covers most of the highlights. THANK YOU 1880 Union Team, from the bottom of our hearts, for creating a beautiful, unforgettable wedding weekend for us. We will recommend you to anyone and everyone, and hope to be back for an anniversary party or some sort of reunion before too long!! Big Hugs, Kimmie & Calvin

Yelp
1880 Union is an awesome venue!! Beyond how beautiful the grounds are the staff truly went above and beyond for us. Leading up to our wedding they made everything really easy and seamless. So much was included - catering, lodging, rentals, coordinator - and every element of that was truly stellar. My husband talked about the steak from our tasting for MONTHS and that was possibly the thing he was most excited about going into our wedding day. The rooms were so cozy and well maintained. And Jessica, our coordinator, was incredibly easy to work with and made sure everything went smoothly despite our wedding being the week before CA shut down because of COVID. Even though we weren't able to celebrate with all of our friends and family, 1880 made sure all of our guests had an incredibly warm welcome and we all felt taken care of every step of the way.

Yelp
I would have never known this town existed unless my sister-in-law found this hotel... What a GREAT find.. First, the bar... Lots of fun at night, well worth the loudness to the rooms.. If you are an all nighter and shutdown when the bar closes, this is the place for you.. Upstairs... AMAZING rooms... They are not Ritz Carlton, but the history and authenticity in this building is amazing.. We walked around for an hour just touching all the trinkets and opening books and such, and that alone was a great time... We got the room with everything (bathroom with shower) but didn't use the shower but did find the personal bathroom useful instead of the community one that hosts most of the rooms (remember cowboys stayed here). Next time we do wine tasting, this is where we are staying...

Yelp
The 1880 Union Hotel is a real gem - especially now that it is under new management. In 2010 they have (and continue to make) renovations that take this old Wells Fargo stagecoach stop back to its original charm. The feel of this place is amazing - creaky floor boards, claw foot bath tubs and a saloon that gives you a real idea of how the old west felt. On my first visit, I stayed in room 2, where Michael Jackson and Paul Mccartney filmed the music video "Say Say Say." (check it out on YouTube) Many of the rooms have beautiful 4-poster beds and lavish wooden headboards that really give the room a nice feel. On my last visit, I was lucky enough to stay in the Governors Suite, which is in the back of the hotel and recently re-opened after years of needing renovation. (you can see a photo of the room in my photo uploads for this listing) In terms of location, I stay at the Union Hotel because it is the best place to rest your head within walking distance of Full of Life Flatbread - a place that any true foodie needs to experience.

Yelp
It had to have been a brothel! I know they say it was a Wells Fargo but I am sure it was a brothel at some point. When I saw pictures of this hotel online I knew I had to stay here. We stayed for one night and were very happy with our stay. You really feel like you stepped back in time. The decor and items throughout the hotel are perfect. I will warn you - you can not sneak around or even walk without being heard by everyone. The floorboards make tremendous noise. Both the two different bars are cool but one just services wine. The other services everything. The outside of the hotel has places to sit as well as a giant chess board and a horseshoe pit. The breakfast in the morning is good, fresh fruit and pastry items. We stayed in the Moulin Rouge room. It was cute but super tiny. Pretty much only room for a bed. Nothing else in the room so don't expect anything. There is a shared shower and two bathrooms upstairs that you will need to use if you stay in this room.

Yelp
I'm really enjoying the remodel. Definitely a little busier than before. They have a pretty good selection of wines and cocktails. They are now serving food which is awesome. And they kept some games all the way in the back for you to enjoy it while you have a drink after work. Cute little place friendly service. I Believe I ordered the try tip bites they were very delicious . I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
1880 was the best choice that we could have made for our wedding weekend. The venue was renovated early last year, and while it was gorgeous before, it is even better now. It has a vintage, and rustic quality that makes the chandeliers sparkle even brighter. Each area, be it the outside brick patio with a fireplace, inside lobby with an antique hotel feel, or the upstairs lounge with elegant and comfortable rooms- even a secret one- adds to the character of the venue. The look and feel alone are a reason to choose 1880. What sealed the deal for us was really the team. The approach that they take toward wedding planning is to work with you and customize every aspect of the day around the vision that you have, as opposed to picking "package A, B or C". Ben, Aly from Tricia Dahlgren Events, and the entire catering staff were all unbelievable. Ben consistently went above and beyond with logistical support and connecting us with vendors and local accommodations during the months leading up to event. Similarly, Aly was attentive and thoughtful, guided us through planning, and ensured a seamless wedding day. And, the food was absolutely incredible- fine dining quality for large groups is very hard to find and they nailed it. We highly recommended 1880 to anyone looking for their special event!

Yelp
Got the last available room on a Saturday in April. Wow! Lucky me! It is so simple and historic, but clean and comfortable. It's not the Radisson (or whatever). No wifi and no flat screens. But a cool old place, a great bed and comfy pillows. Also, your choice downstairs of a wine bar or regular bar. And a band! So bring earplugs if you're delicate that way.

Yelp
Wow, so, it took me so long to get on here and write a review cause I've never done this before, but I've got to get the word out on this place! My fiance and I stayed here for my birthday last July (2010) to go wine tasting around Santa Ynez; from the moment we pulled up I felt like I had died and gone to heaven, and it just got better from there. This place is the real deal when it comes to historical integrity. The facade is amazing and the reception area, dining common, and attached saloon are so well kept. Head upstairs to the lounge and the rooms and be prepared to have your mind blown if you're looking for historical charm. Each room is totally different and amazing in it's own way (we were so lucky to be there during a photo shoot and we got to see them all!). The detached bathrooms are well maintained and immaculately clean. The lounge area has been outfitted with brand new leather and beautiful wood furniture that fits the late 19th century atmosphere seamlessly. There is a wood burning stove, games, and LOTS of vintage books to read in the lounge as well. One evening we were relaxing in the lounge and we struck up a conversation with a man, who seemed to know quite a bit about the hotel, about our love of historical places of interest. Come to find out he was the owner of the place, who happened to be staying the night to oversee the photo shoot taking place the next day. He was so glad that we appreciated all the work he had been putting into the place that he upgraded us to the Presidential Suite for our last night! The Presidential Suite is huge with a living room equipped with a flat screen, a gigantic comfortable bed, a jacuzzi tub and a large balcony. It was such a great way to end my birthday weekend! (side note: as much as I loved the Presidential treatment for my birthday weekend, the smaller rooms are really where it's at for the super vintage decor and atmosphere, if that's your thing) All in all I couldn't be happier with our stay at this hotel. The staff was nothing short of amazing (the bartender gave me shot on the house for my birthday), the rooms and bathrooms were super clean, the charm and historical integrity of the place blew me away, and the owner is the nicest guy! AND not to mention the location is supreme for wine tasting in the area, as well as being literally steps away from Full of Life Flatbreads, an amazing local restaurant. Wait, I didn't even mention the bocce ball court! If I talked about everything I loved about this place I would be here all night. Seriously, do yourself a favor if you're ever wine tasting in or around Los Alamos, Los Olivos, Santa Ynez etc. STAY AT THIS HOTEL; you won't regret it! As a history buff and lover of all things antique and vintage, this hotel is absolutely one of my favorite places on the planet. :)

Yelp
My now husband and I had an amazing experience getting married at the 1880 Union Hotel!! Throughout the process, Ben, Aly and their staff were super responsive and quick to answer any of our questions/help us with the planning. The venue itself was probably the coolest wedding venue us or any of guests had ever seen. Staying in the historic, beautifully appointed rooms for the weekend was truly a treat and the magical backyard was the perfect setting for the actual wedding. It was also awesome to have the Saloon attached, which gave our guests a place to quench their thirsts late night. On the day of, Aly and her coordination staff were so on top of everything and made sure not only that everything went smoothly, but that my husband and I remembered to eat and drink. (which was so appreciated because the food and beverages were out of this world!). In sum, our experience at the 1880 couldn't have been better. The setting mixed with wonderful staff and management made it a weekend that we and our guests will never forget. Thank you 1880!!!!

Yelp
Spent the weekend here fo my sisters wedding . Our family had the whole hotel upstairs to ourselves. The staff was absolutely amazing ! They went above and beyond to make sure we all had everything we needed and that the events we had planned went smoothly and better than imaginable. Juan was extremely professional and not only kept everything moving but also made sure the wedding party and all our kids were well taken care of and happy. This weekend was the best I've had in a long time , my sisters wedding was perfection, we were able to sleep all in the same gorgeous hotel/ mansion , we felt safe and slept great . My son loved the arcade room and the huge grass yard! I highly highly recommend this venue !

Yelp
We're about to have our wedding here and couldn't be more excited. This place is an absolute gem if you're looking to have a wedding that's somewhat off the beaten path. Check it out.

Yelp
Stayed in the Presidential Suite to celebrate a birthday. The entire Hotel is fantastic and full of period details (check out the Billiards' Room, off the hotel bar) and the attached wine bar was a great find. There is an amazing Pizza restaurant down the street, as well as a wonderful breakfast joint. The Presidential Suite has a deep soaking jacuzzi tub, a shower for 2 or more, a sitting room with a fireplace as well as the bedroom and entry room. The balcony has a view over the quiet backyard, so nice place to sit and enjoy a glass of wine. Definitely enjoyed this more than some of the faux historical building in nearby towns. If visiting Santa Ynez wine district, this is the place to stay.

Yelp
The previous owners made this place a amazing experience that me and my wife would love coming to getting a drink and enjoying the live music every week going on tours of the hotel learning about the history of the place and ever since they sold it to new people it's gonna completely down the toilet we went it for a drink a week or 2 ago and the bartender was so drunk he had to hold onto the bar to stand and the hotel is closed and it's a rediculous amount of money to rent it out for a hotel and it comes with absolutely nothing you just get the hotel for the day I wish the previous owners would take it back and run it the way they did I'm done coming to this place!

Yelp
Decor and Vibe is awesome. Music always sucks. Sucks. Bad. Makes me want to leave every time. Get it together you have such a cool spot.

Yelp
I attended the most lovely wedding I've ever seen last weekend at the 1880 Union Hotel in Los Alamos, CA! It afforded a very realistic view of Western hotels of the past, while missing none of our present-day needs. it was charming in its 19th-century opulence and in its modern-day simplicity with incredibly photogenic antiques that would make any wedding more picturesque and glamorous. The gazebo where the wedding unfolded outdoors, made it fresh and beautiful, while the large fireplace back by the dancefloor, band area kept the evening chill off. With fountains and a rose garden, privacy and homeyness, the only tiny issue is that wooden floors and walls allow for the echo of little feet to reach everyone. But we all slept like rocks in those large, comfy beds, so who cared! The warmth of the caretakers made the whole weekend unique and fun, and who wouldn't feel warm and fuzzy at such a delightful venue?

Yelp
Where do I begin!!!! What an amazing stop... we drove up the coast and asked for recommendations to stop for drinks. We stopped at cold springs tavern and were told about the union hotel was a must stop. We walked in and was greeted by Juan and felt very welcomed. As we sat down we were served a beer and a wine. Drinks were amazing, service was top notch. Juan made us a cucumber vodka drink which was to die for. If you stop in tell Juan hello from us. Thanks again Juan we can't wait for our next trip.

Yelp
Our stay at the 1880 Union Hotel was a lifetime memory for our entire family. To say that the hotel over-delivered on any expectations is an understatement. Everything was perfect from the minute we arrived until our sad departure time. The rooms and the grounds are amazing, but the service was over-the-top. My daughter is already planning her 2 year old's wedding there someday! I can honestly say we were treated like royalty and will never forget our special 75th birthday celebration.

Yelp
What an interesting little hotel in the middle of Los Alamos. I give the hotel 3 stars and the rest of it 4 stars. The saloon with the live band and outdoor seating was a blast and highly recommended. The hotel, not so much. We stayed in one of the rooms with no bathroom which was inconvenient but fine. The room was tiny but charming. The bathrooms and showers were clean, just annoying if you have to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My biggest complaint which is something that is highly fixable is the quality of the beds. Super duper uncomfortable. Cheap sheets and cheap pillows. No air conditioning and because there are fans in the windows, you can't really close the blinds. So prepare to be up at the crack of dawn and up late because the party downstairs will keep you up until midnight. It's very loud. I was exhausted coming home from a bad night of sleep. And lastly, we spent $150.00 on this room! Come on people, at these prices, sport for some comfy pillows! It's outrageous compared to what you can get in the area. Definitely come by and visit! This place is cool, fun, and charming to experience but I would not stay here again.

Yelp
This place is great! Totally underrated because of the past management and ownership. As of July, the hotel has made a TON of renovations and is even adding a bridal suite to the back half of the hotel. In a few weeks the Saloon will be in operation- and it is said that the place gets hoppin in the summer time. I stayed in room 2, with quirky wall paper and a bathtub to match. This is the room where Michael Jackson filmed the music video "Say Say Say." Pretty cool. There are some rooms (like 9) that have HUGE 4-poster beds and HUGE, heavy, wooden headboards that are amazing. I highly recommend giving this place a chance....or second chance if you haven't been there since July, because the new management, ownership and renovations make a big difference! Historical Events to Note: -This place has been around since 1880 and was a stagecoach stop adored by many. -Johnny Cash used to play at this saloon before he got famous - The saloon in the back- hidden by a book shelf- is rumored to have been a secret saloon during prohibition. - The Michael Jackson music video "Say Say Say" was filmed in room 2

Yelp
Went here for the first time with some friends. Wow! The decor was very nice. The atmosphere was unique and rustic with a touch of the past. The service was great, the beers are good and the food was amazing! Order the Grilled cheese Sandwich, Include the Fries and treat yourself. It was great!.

Yelp
Amazingly friendly people! The owner showed us the whole house, we saw every room including the hidden room. That is a place where you have to stop by. Also if you are Michael Jackson fan then that's a must come place! Mike and Paul McCartney did their music video for SaySay over there. Amazing really! So old place but in great condition! Thank you for showing us the place!

Yelp
I have always wanted to stay here and I finally made it. YAY!!! I can't tell you enough how awesome this place is. The house is really old with creaky floors and it was great! I got the room where Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney filmed the music video for "Say Say Say". It had beautiful wall paper and the claw foot tub also matched the wall paper. There were no modern amenities in our room other than a fan if you consider that modern. The upstairs has a common area for reading books and playing games. I wish I had more time to do those things. Its just such a cute & fun place. The breakfast was included. I had fruit and potatoes my boyfriend had the country breakfast which included a cheese omelette with potatoes, fruit, french toast, coffee, & OJ. It is filling. This isn't your usual Days Inn continental breakfast (packaged danish w/ coffee & juice). I will post some pics up soon as I download from my camera. I highly recommend the union hotel if you want to have a quirky and fun vacation.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and stay here. The hotel staff is extremely accomadating. They went out of their way to make sure we had everything our 16 month needed. The huge outdoor area was a great place for us to relax with a glass of wine while our toddler ran around getting her energy out. Obviously this beautiful historic hotel is not baby proofed, so if you have little ones you have to stay with them at all times. We were in town for a Mother's Day half marathon. It was a really short distance from Solvang. I'm so glad we stayed here because downtown Solvang was packed. They have live music Friday and Saturday night. This was perfect for us. The baby and I got to hang out and dance up a storm from 8-9pm. Then we both drifted right off to sleep upstairs. Daddy got to stay up late, that's about 12pm and listen to music and have some adult time. He said the band played until 11. The pastries and coffee served every morning were delicious and fresh. They clearly got them from the bakery or made the pastries there. I think this would be a fantastic spot for a wedding, with the great staff, and beautiful outdoor area!

Yelp
$10 for a whiskey and Coke is ridiculous. The least they could provide is a locals discount for those of us that have been coming for nearly 20 years. The high priced drinks leave a bad taste in my mouth. Had 1 bartender tell me to hold on while he was on his phone. I walked out.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Every detail is well thought out and theme shines at every corner. The wild west saloon feel is quite authentic, not cheesy or kitschy. The upstairs and rooms are even better than the main saloon. While maintaining a very old time feel the bed was shockingly comfortable and the bathroom was clean. There was even an in room air conditioner (which we NEEDED). When booking note that some rooms use a shared bathroom, some have private baths (tub vs shower vs both are also different room to room) The staff is accommodating and genuinely happy your there. Service at the main bar was a bit slow but pleasant. Service and conversation at the wine bar can not be beat. I didn't eat here so I have no idea what the food is like, but there are several great options in this little town. My girlfriend still hasn't stopped thanking me for taking her here

Yelp
Had a great time having a few creative cocktails. The atmosphere is great! The conversation was positive! The drinks were delicious! I'd go back again.
