NYC Sushi Omakase Restaurants Increase Prices - Eater NY

"Sushi Ginza Onodera has raised its omakase price to $400, eliminating the $300 option. The restaurant attributes this to rising tuna costs and aims to improve the diner experience. The new menu includes luxury ingredients and a meal featuring six appetizers, a mini-tower of crab meat with Hokkaido sea urchin and caviar, a slice of grilled otoro with white truffles and sweet miso from Kyoto, and 10 pieces of nigiri sushi." - Ryan Sutton

I have been ordering from here multiple times a month for the last year and it has been very hit or miss. When it’s good, it’s good. Tonight, though, the salmon and tuna meat was literally inedible. I couldn’t even chew it. And then my shrimp tempura roll had spicy mayo on it. I have severe GI issues and sushi is literally the only food I’m able to order as takeout, but I can’t eat anything spicy. I’m now very worried about causing damage to my intestines because of the spicy mayo that was added without my knowledge. I will be taking my business elsewhere.

Best sushi in the neighborhood 😍 always fresh and so yummy 😋

I came across this place on Google maps when I first moved to midtown a year and a half ago. It has yet to let me down, legit some of the best sushi I’ve had. Such a hidden gem - great prices, free delivery, great service! The spicy snow crab roll is legit amazing and the spicy tuna roll is a close second. Highly recommend!

Google
I got the lunch special for 3x spicy salmon and now I know why they hand you sushi with the bag stapled down, when I got home and opened it up I saw the foulest looking spicy salmon I have ever seen. I didn’t want to waste food so I ate it all and I can not confirm if my stomach troubles were from the food. I will say I have had two good experiences with them before so I am not sure why they decided today was the day they wanted to make sure my Friday was going as poorly as their fish

Google
I think this place is hit or miss. Sometimes the sushi is good, but other times it tastes dry and old. The mango prawn salad is kind of a scam.. I’d avoid it.. just some shrimps on a bed of iceberg lettuce and mango slices.

Google
I love the sushi from here! It's always fresh and really generous pieces! The Teriyaki tofu and the bento boxes are amazing and so much food. The best sushi deal for the best quality I have found in NYC!

Google
no idea why this place has such good reviews… ordered a spicy snow crab roll and they gave me kani thinking I wouldn’t notice?? salmon avo roll was stringy and clearly low quality. spicy tuna came with the crunch mushy like it had been sitting out and soaking for a while. i swear even the soy sauce tasted weird. whole thing smelled rank like kani since they packaged it all together- barf. wish i could give zero stars.

Yelp
Good quality sushi with great special pricing for lunch. Have picked up for lunch many times and am always satisfied with the food and service. Solid neighborhood sushi spot - do not expect anything fancy.

Yelp
Pretty solid takeout sushi - 2 roll lunch special with miso soup was $15. The rolls were pretty plumped and very fresh. They don't skimp on the fish or avocado. The rice definitely tasted more rice vinegar forward than other places but it was tasty and worked well. I'd definitely come back again.

Yelp
I live close by, so this is my go-to takeout sushi place. And I eat a LOT of sushi, so I am here frequently (at least once every two weeks). I'm the kind of person that has their sushi order down pat, and it doesn't change much. I order a shrimp tempura roll, spicy salmon roll, and a spicy scallop roll. I have yet to be disappointed by the quality of the fish. It's consistently good, and relatively inexpensive. They're super quick with their orders as well. Highly recommend this spot!

Yelp
Ordered the Any 3 rolls with 3 piece sushi lunch special delivered via Uber Eats (eel avocado roll, spicy salmon crunchy roll, shrimp tempura roll, salmon sushi, 2 smoked salmon sushi) and it was very delicious! Fish was fresh and it was a decent ratio of fish to rice. Delivery was also on time.

Yelp
Overall, great sushi and ambiance! We got the Spicy girl and the American dream! The spicy girl was our favorite because it was more flavorful but both were solid. This place is small and take out only but derive was super fast and great. Def recommend!

Yelp
Did sushi takeout and was very impressed. Really high quality fish, and the special rolls were not masked by overly strong or sweet sauces. The spicy scallop sushi was a star or the show. Just enough spice to know you ordered spicy, but not so much that you couldn't taste anything else. The vegetable tempura was a great portion for the price and the broccoli tempura was fun and unexpected. The other star was the teriyaki tofu. Light and fluffy soft tofu with a thin fried outside and a great sauce. Takeout was fast and came with everything we needed to quickly dig in! 10/10 would recommend. Menu items: S1. Miso Soup Spicy Tuna R5. Spicy Scallop Roll R7. Spicy Salmon Roll R15. Yellowtail Scallion Roll 14. Spicy Girl Roll 17. Volcano Roll

Yelp
In this mostly residential neighborhood, takeout/delivery joints are a dime a dozen and destination restaurants are few and far between. Somehow, despite there being many, many places to order your standard sushi roll lunch and dinner specials, most of them fall short. The fish may be rubbery and of subpar quality and the rice overly sweet or overcooked. Ginza gets it right. The prices are standard, the food is fresh, and they've always gotten my order right, which is more than I can say at nearby sushi restaurants. You'll find all the classics here, but I especially love the eel roll, yellowtail jalapeno, and salmon avocado. I'll order for pick up or delivery as there's no space to sit inside, but this place is so much better than the other spots in Murray Hill that I'll walk an extra few blocks to get the better sushi here.

Yelp
Sushi takeout is my Sunday night ritual, so I ordered from here to try a new place in my neighborhood. The order was ready really quickly, which was a plus. I ordered the spicy girl roll, a spicy salmon roll, and seaweed salad. When I opened up my order at home, I was disappointed since they gave me a salmon avocado roll instead of my spicy salmon roll. The spicy girl roll was good, but nothing over the top. Not sure if I will be back, but it was quick and affordable.

Yelp
Incredibly fresh and plentiful food! A must-try for anyone visiting or local. Let's dive in ... Yellowtail Jalapeño Roll (5/5): Wow! That yellowtail tastes like it www caught today, while the jalapeño is kindly deveined and deseeded yet incredibly juicy and crunchy. This roll, as with the others, is well packed in a bountiful and yet organized way. Spicy White Tuna Roll (5/5): Holy macaroni. This is the best spicy/crunchy roll of any sushi joint I've tried in the city. The tuna is ultra fresh and the spicy crunchy tempura part is actually really crunchy and not soggy like most places do; and it's flavorful nature was genuinely not expected and I'm the opposite of disappointed. Alaska Mak (5/5): This large 5-piece roll really threw me off at first glance but checked all the boxes and then some. The cucumber crunches, the avocado is creamy, the salmon fresh as can be. Salmon Skin Salad (4/5): There is an abundance of salmon skin in this salad. The rest is mostly lettuce and a sprinkle of shaved carrot and cucumber pieces. Would have been nice for more veg other than the lettuce. But let me tell you how good the dressing is -- it's a carrot gingery burst of flavor I wouldn't trade for anything and they give you two containers generously. Edamame (4/5): Well cooked but no salt so this the minus one. Vegetable Miso Soup (3/5): The blend of vegetables here was fine and the broth is nothing to write home about. Mostly lettuce (why?), some broccoli and carrot plus tofu chunks. Spinach and Tofu Soup (4/5): This soup is exactly what it promises to be. The clear broth is tasty but plain -- which I guess this should be. The spinach and tofu are exactly what you would expect. Checks the box. TL;DR: While this place doesn't have soups or edamame I would rave over, the rolls and fish (in the rolls and salad) are my new all time favorites in NY. 100% on the repeat list.

Yelp
Quick in and out. Standard fare. Had veg rolls. Loved Avocado rolls. Good experience ordering on phone. Will recommend for veg rolls, for sure. Spartan no frills decor suits just fine if you are looking for a take out.

Yelp
Ginza sushi is a solid spot if you want sushi or chinese food. The salmon bento box was also solid. The delivery came fast and hot. No complaints. Was it the best food I have had? No, but it did the job. 3 stars.
google avatar

Shuchi S.

Yelp
Good sushi on the go. They work quickly and give you a good amount of food for your dollar. I liked their vegetarian options and the staff is friendly. Only reason I give 4 and not 5 stars is because I wish their ginger and wasabi tasted more fresh. Otherwise, great spot and will return again!

Chase H.

Yelp
Love Ginza! Me and my friends order from here all the time. They're very reliable, quick, and most importantly affordable for the quality of food they're serving.

Yelp
Came here on a last minute decision and don't regret it. It's a small take out only sushi spot so I didn't expect too much but I was wrong. The portion size for these sushi was a good ratio between rice and fish and was filling. The lunch special was a good deal which was like $17 for 3 rolls and miso soup just like a lot of other sushi spots. The only reason I gave it a 4 star is because they only give you one small container for soy sauce even if you get like three rolls. Typically 2 would be fine.

Yelp
This is for delivery orders. For two days in a row, they delivered my order within 10-15 minutes of placing it. Granted I am only 11 streets away, but the turnaround time is still impressive. Their rolls are pretty stuffed too. I wouldn't get the nigiri here as the white fish and salmon piece i had tasted kinda fishy. Other than that, it's a great spot to order some rolls for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
This place is just down the street from my apt so I find myself wandering in here from time to time. I'd say this is a GREAT place to order take out. Always fresh, the prices are great, and the food is plentiful. On the eat-in side it can be a challenge. This place is TINY. It has 3 bar seats and two 2-person tables. So 7 seats total. During lunch they are usually rushing to fill take-out orders so you will be sitting around a lot of bags and with the delivery folks popping in and out of the door every few minutes. But the food is delicious and they have lunch specials so its worth it.

Yelp
Very good, reliable, and bang for your buck sushi takeout joint! I've known about this place for a while but I didn't want to break up with Nobi down the street. I gave in one Sunday night and ordered the roll combo with yellowtail scallion, eel cucumber, and salmon avocado. I prefer Nobi's selection of roll combos since I haven't been a fan of yellowtail lately, but this roll changed my mind! The yellowtail was awesome with just enough scallion and plenty of delicious fish. The other rolls were great too as well as the miso soup! At $20 for a 3 roll combo meal and soup, they're on par with other value-based sushi in this part of the city. I'll definitely be adding them to my takeout rotation!

Yelp
best avocado cucumber roll i've had anywhere. most fat, vibrant, sweet, perfectly ripened avocado slices i've ever seen in a sushi roll. i would share a picture but i inhaled all of my food so quickly the thought never even occurred to me. i eat a LOT of veggie rolls but i never once fathomed a roll could taste like that. 100000% going back specifically for more of that magic. also had an age tofu (which was perfect, REALLY good sauce and nice portion) and a brown rice. we called them after closing but they offered to throw our order together no problem and we had it in 10 minutes. my dad got a yellowtail scallion roll he's been absolutely raving about, SUPER generous portion of fish that he claims 'will ruin every yellowtail roll i try from now on.' my sister had a philadelphia roll which she had no problem with (and looked excellent) but i think she was even more impressed with the veggie roll i got. 10/10 best use of your sushi money hands down. only wish we ordered early enough to try the fries, but i'm sure we will fairly soon !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yelp
A small place but don't underestimate it!! This is the perfect place for a quick sushi lunch. Best to go by yourself or with one other person. There are only two tables and some seating at the sushi bar. Service is prompt and staff is nice. They have a lunch special which is reasonably priced. I usually get the 3 roll sushi lunch special with a salad. Love the sushi. Rice to fish ratio is on point but the best part is that it tastes fresh. Have been here about 5 times, definitely my go-to sushi place in the area.

Yelp
Every neighborhood needs a really good, reliable, basic Japanese place and 251 Ginza absolutely fits the bill. It's been around for many years but I only discovered it about a month ago. I'm not really a sushi eater so I've focused on the cooked dishes and they're all terrific. The lunch bento box is one of the best deals in town. Something as simple as miso soup can, at many places, taste like dish water. Not here. Delicious with lots of seaweed. The teriyaki and don buri and tempura - all excellent. Don't know why it took me so long to get there but I'm sooooo glad I did!
google avatar

Saloni S.

Yelp
I've ordered delivery from ginza sushi multiple times before and dealt with the rude and obnoxious delivery guy cz the food was food but this time there was PLASTIC in the beef negimaki bento box. The beef was overcooked and there was a hole in the container as well. NEVER ordering from them again!!!!

Soo L.

Yelp
Wow new fav delivery spot. Fresh fish and good miso soup. I got 2 roll lunch special (shrimp tempura & salmon avocado) and 1 spicy scallop hand roll. The rolls were very good, good portions on the fillings. But the spicy scallop was AMAZING. I am definitely going to save this store for my delivery sushi. Too bad I didn't take a picture of the food. Fresh fish, ripe avo, and the sauces were good too (eel sauce and spicy mayo)
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem. Perfectly fresh sushi, prepared with great care. Without a doubt, my favorite restaurant in Murray Hill. And the people who work there are so nice.
google avatar

Tri L.

Yelp
Phenomenal sushi place. I was distracted by the size of the place, but that didn't matter once I got my first roll, it was amazing. The proportions were really good, not too much rice, the rice was fluffy and delicious, the fish was so fresh and super tasty. Had to order more rolls and also some nigiri and a hand roll too, all were excellent. Great service and highly recommended!
google avatar

Anna L.

Yelp
This is a small sushi restaurant, which takes online orders. The sushi is very good and is fresh. They have sushi pizza!!! The sushi pizza consists of tuna, salmon, seaweed salad on a scallion pancake with spicy mayo. It was delicious and enough to share among two people. I also had a salmon avocado roll. You can select the style for each roll, maki, inside out or hand roll. I opted for the hand roll. You might get slightly less with the hand roll, but it's so much more fun to eat.
google avatar

Winni C.

Yelp
It's a little home in the wall that has been there for many years. I order the lunch specials usual consisting of a few rolls with sushi or miso soup. The food is delicious and as I expect my sushi to be fresh and tasty. Their noodle soups are good as well in a cold winter day!
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
This is our go-to spot in the neighborhood anytime we want a bento box. You can't beat the deal for the lunch specials either. $12 for a lunch special bento box which includes salad, miso soup, spring roll, gyoza, rice, entree, and California roll. As I'm not the biggest California roll fan, I love that they give the option to swap that for another maki roll for an extra dollar or two. Shrimp and veggie tempura bento box (pictured) is my usual order if I'm not getting sushi or sashimi. Staff is friendly as well.
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
I always love the roll combos here. They're so good! I got the combo with eel, salmon avocado, and yellowtail and also got a spicy tuna on the side.
google avatar

Eva K.

Yelp
This place sells average sushi at best, I don't know why the rave of this place. We came to this place, well-knowing that this is a simple take away place, but I dismissed the prejudice that a mere takeaway couldn't do good sushi, but there I had my prejudice proven. Actually, the sushi wasn't that bad, but it could have been better, but the woman serving us (not the young one, but the older lady) was quite rude and not hospitable at all. It made me regret my decision that we should have gone to the more-known sushi place instead. There you go, now I've learned my lesson.
google avatar

Alexandra T.

Yelp
Had a really poor experience the first time I ordered here on seamless, but decided to give it a second shot today for lunch (Thursday). I went with the 3 roll + 3 piece sushi lunch combo that also comes with miso soup. The rolls and sushi were awesome and fresh! I went with spicy tuna, yellowtail scallion, and salmon avo. The rolls were neatly packed unlike last time and they are tasted great...no suspect tuna :) For the 3 pieces of sushi I ordered eel, white tuna, and octopus. I like the eel and white tuna; however, the octopus was rubbery so I wouldn't get that one again. Would definitely try it again here for lunch!
google avatar

Dolma Y.

Yelp
The fish with the sushi literally tasted and smelled like it's been sitting in a refrigerator for a whole day without electricity. I literally had one bite and threw everything out. Such a waste of money! Won't be ordering again
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
I live in the area and this is my favorite sushi spot. Takeout/delivery only. Quality and taste is always superb!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
I've decided that this is my favorite takeout sushi in the neighborhood.. They're a little bit pricier, but you always get really fresh fish, big salad portions & they have the best brown rice. I order on seamless and they usually beat the delivery time! I highly recommend it here. :)
google avatar

Elisa H.

Yelp
Their salmon avocado, yellowtail scallion, & eel cucumber combo was really fresh. I noticed the superior eel sauce had some sorta wine-y effervescence to it. The shrimp mango salad was ok, wouldn't get it again. Best thing here besides their eel rolls are the fresh mild and grainy bright green wasabi granules. Yes I approve.

Victoria D.

Yelp
Ginza is my favorite takeout sushi spot in Murray Hill. Food is fresh, ready quickly and friendly service. Highly recommend for takeout if you're in the area
google avatar

Holly H.

Yelp
Order food here for the first time and also the last time. The food was ok, the rice is so hard to eat that I have to make my own rice and also the wasabi was fake. Like they use some powder paste to make it. The only reason I order here is because of the rating on yelp and the rating on seamless. What a disappointment!
google avatar

Kaz C.

Yelp
Would definitely order from here again. Foot arrive promptly, portions were great, and there was so much flavour!! We got the ginza special roll, avocado roll, spicy salmon roll and the eel avocado roll. All portions were great, it tasted very fresh and flavourful. We also got the miso soup which arrived hot and was super tasty. And lastly, oh my goodness their calamari! It was so fresh and tasty! Didn't love the sauce it came with so we're glad we ordered a spicy Mayo too. Would definitely order from here again!!!

Matt K.

Yelp
The sushi tastes chewy and there was something inside of it (maybe from a hairnet?). Definitely wouldn't recommend.

Yelp
I attempted to find a replacement for Aji Sushi where the food is crappy and the service is rude and abrupt. Here's how it went: I have been to this place many times...and it's getting progressively worse. They have two tables and a tiny bar. The first time, we had okay service and it seemed cute. The next time the service was a little crusty. And it's rude to have ongoing conversation especially in another language that sounds like it could be negative conversation about the customers. (Business conversation is understandable to expedite order, etc--but, this is ongoing social conversation in front of...or behind the back of... customers.) The next time I went, there was an employee with his head down sleeping at the table next to us...the whole time...and in the window too, so completely visible to people walking by -- potential customers... The last time, the two tables were already in use by employees. The woman serving us is fairly impatient and rude, although she ignores you when she's talking on the phone (socially). She also wears a big puffer winter coat while serving you -- which is gross bc she dips her coat right over and basically into your food. There's a heater blowing hot air into your face--the lady in the coat should turn it on herself and wear appropriate attire. If you weren't sure if they cared, they will make it abundantly clear that they really don't. That said, the food isn't bad. I will do take-out from now on--or hopefully find a new place.

Yelp
It's a tiny restaurant with a handful of seats (as is common in Japan) that are currently blocked off due to COVID. I got four rolls (salmon avocado, eel cucumber, yellowtail, and spicy tuna) and a miso soup to go. (That's roughly equivalent to one of their combos, but the lady told me the combo has less fish which is why it's cheaper.) Everything was delicious and on point, much better quality than the average sushi place. Even the wakame in the miso soup was better than usual, thick and with good texture. o_O (I never paid attention to that before.) I haven't tried anything else on their menu, but for sushi I can definitely recommend 251 Ginza if you're in the area. I would certainly go back.

Yelp
We live right on 35th street. We order from here often. (Tip: Call in your order. Don't use Seamless). Good solid sushi, fast delivery and friendly service.

Marge H.

Yelp
Pretty good lunch bento boxes - usually get the chicken katsu. Sushi lunch special is also great. Takeout only. Fast service and the lady at the front is super nice.
google avatar

Joze F.

Yelp
First time eating here...recommended by a friend. Was a little skeptical due to the size of the space. But the service and food was up to par. Very nice host/waiter. Best day to come is from Mon- Wednesday. Lunch specials are great
google avatar

Marie S.

Yelp
My new favorite sushi place in Midtown Manhattan! Ordered Miso soup, a California roll plus a few rolls. Delivery was very fast - the soup was as hot as if it were being served table side. the sushi was fresh. Also, the prices at Ginza Sushi are very reasonable & the portion size is decent. Will definitely return!

Alex D.

Yelp
Best sushi in all of NYC... super fresh fish and friendly staff. Awesome lunch specials
google avatar

Elaine H.

Yelp
I'm not quite sure whether it is because of the fact that delivery order in general underperforms, or I'm simply not at a good mood for fish, I did not quite enjoy my sushi box. Both the tuna rolls and the miso soup complementary were lack of flavor! Portion size was huge though, as I could only finish half of my box and already left pretty stuffed. The steamed broccoli with teriyaki sauce was at an OK level; however I would be really surprised if they mess up with a steamed dish. Delivery speed was quite fast nevertheless.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
***Delivery Review only*** Great delivery service. Food was delicious. Highly recommend for delivery service!

Natalie P.

Yelp
Great place for a takeout. Started ordering here about once a week a few months ago and have always been satisfied with the quality. Spicy scallop roll is very good! Wish the shared dishes (like sushi & sashimi for 2) were slightly larger but otherwise no complaints!
google avatar

Charlie R.

Yelp
This is the best sushi in NYC, hands down. If Momofuku and Sugarfish had a sushi baby, and Morimoto and Sushi Yasuda had a sushi baby, and those sushi babies were groomed from birth in the art of sushi and eventually had their own prodigy sushi baby that grew up and bought a small space in Murray Hill to just make sushi with ingredients so fresh that skeptics believe it to be dark magic, this would be it. I am both ashamed and proud at how many times I have gotten sushi from Ginza over the past few years, and I will never stop. Ginza for life. FIVE STARS. References available upon request - I have conducted research with friends and family and created a sample size that indicates within acceptable standard deviation that my claim is true.
