The First Day We Got Our Stars: Lei Hsiao Ping

"Three Coins is a one-Michelin-starred restaurant in Taipei, started by Chiou Jing Huei's family over 50 years ago. It serves as an unofficial dining room for the family and is known for its Taiwanese-inflected Cantonese flavors. The restaurant adapts traditional Cantonese cooking methods for Taiwanese tastebuds, using oil, salt, and starch with restraint. The kitchen prioritizes health, preparing ingredients from scratch and avoiding additives. The restaurant earned its Michelin star for its dedication to quality and tradition." - MICHELIN Guide Taipei Editorial Team

Back to THE prestigious restaurant after almost 40 years when my dad took me there. I haven’t visited this restaurant for almost 40 years. The chicken soup is awesome. Not greasy. Not salty. Excellent balance. The roasted goose doesn’t stand out. I rather have roasted ducks. The fish is fresh and well steamed. Not overcooked. Lamb chops are properly seasoned and baked. Seafood papayas are quite innovative. They use seafood instead of swallow nests. The oyster sauced abalone doesn’t meet my expectations.

Excellent food and very good service..we were a large group. And staff took care of individual food preferences and limitations. Managed to serve us on time. We didn't have to wait much between the course of servings. Liver music was good for the ears. Though I didn't understand much of the songs, they were enriching the ambience.

An auspicious restaurant name for those who play mahjong! The food is so yummy esp the crispy skin chicken and sweet n sour prawn in deep fried dough

The Crispy Roast Duck is one of the best I have tried, the skin was extremely crispy. Need to order 1 day in advance. The asparagus was a disappointment. But the 咸菜鸭汤 was good. Also like the fried beehoon that has the “wok hey”.

We booked a private room for our family, while the presentation was great, however the food wasnt that remarkly amazing compare to the price. Even though we booked a room but most of next door are extremely noisy due to their birthday, that day they run out of duck and fish so I was quite sad . People who works there were very nice n welcoming, food were still some of very nice one. Hopefully I can try their duck one day 😭.

This restaurant serves Cantonese cuisine with very delicate cooking styles. The seating is roomy and comfortable. You don’t feel the loud noises here like you usually feel at other restaurants with big round tables. Even though there are some not so pricey dishes on the menu, the waiters tend to push you to order higher end dishes. So you would be a bit surprised when you see the bill.

It's definitely a restaurant that you'd like to visit if you're looking for fine type of chinese cuisine

Yelp
Love it's mainly all Private Rooms, service was on point for the star. We pre-ordered some main dishes and order the rest on the spot. Somebow a bit disappointed on the pre-ordered dishes as they were served cold, they were suppose to be the star. However, most of the dishes from the menu were very tasty. The favs: *Braised Tofu with Pumpkin *Minced Shrimp Lettuve Wrap *Stir Fried Pork Rib with Sweet & Sour Kumquat Sauce - absolute fav *Sauteed Asparagus and Lily Buds *Double Boiled Frog Leg & Garlic Soup *Crispy Fried Soft Shell Crab The okayed: *Deep Fried Crispy Chicken *Stir Fried Flat Rice Noodle with Sliced Beef with Soy Sauce *Steamed Local Tiger Grouper The slightly disappointed: *Cantonese Style Roast Duck 2 way *Buddha Jump over the Pot - this is really not how it suppose to be, it's more like herbal soup here I'd come back but might just order from the menu.

Yelp
Delicious, unique dishes that I had never tried before were enjoyed at this Michelin rated restaurant. We had a private room arranged by a dear family friend that I hadn't seen in over 10 years. A great gathering with fantastic company and we dined on gourmet courses such as fresh whole fish, Peking duck, a pot of curry wrapped by fantastically delicious bread to dip, delicate seafood in sweet papaya and many others! Would definitely return again!

Yelp
Peking duck is amazing here! Love their wheat pancake wrap for the duck. Their other dim sum dishes are decent too. Service is a hit or miss. Order sesame balls ahead of time if you want it because they take forever to come out.

Yelp
Came here with some friends on a Sunday afternoon. We were looking for a nearby brewery, but saw the Michelin Star awarded to this restaurant, and decided to stop in. Due to the rather decadent interior, we asked whether we were okay to come in in our casual tourist-style shorts and t-shirts. Of course, they said; so we dined! We were seated upstairs in the area of the restaurant clearly designed for large groups/families out for special occasion-type meals. Needless to say, we felt a little bit out-of-place in a room full of multi-generation families clearly celebrating various achievements and birthdays. The sideways glances by passers-by, seeing three white guys in shorts and t-shirts, didn't help. Undeterred, we enjoyed our meal. They're known for their Peking Duck, but you have to order that 24 hours in advance, so we ordered whatever else sounded interesting. That meant heaps of sweet-and-sour pork, lamb, noodles, rice, etc. The pork and lamb were spectacular and accompanying tea was a nice subtle balance to the strong flavors of the main dishes. The pork was so good, we ordered a second plate of it. I would say that while I appreciated the design of the dim sum options, I was a bit underwhelmed. Perhaps we just ordered the wrong thing. I'd come back to try the duck and get some more of that delicious pork, though!

Hong Kong Buddha jumps the wall 港式佛跳牆; 3. Soup big prawn 上湯大明蝦; 4. Lemon steamed live fish 檸檬蒸活魚; 5. Curry chicken curry 薑黃咖喱雞; 6. Steamed glutinous Rice with Sakura Shrimp

Yelp
We came here for a family style banquet, and they have lots of private rooms on the first floor. Our room also had a tv and karaoke available. Im not sure if there are any other Michelin starred places with karaoke. Our menu included - - Cold dishes to start, which included sausages, char siu, chicken, and tarako - Chicken soup noodles with tea oil: quite oily but good in flavor, not too salty - Giant Thai shrimp: served head on, great flavor - huge and plump - Peking duck: the skin was nicely crisped; they served the first portion pre wrapped in the pancake - Papaya baked with seafood: super unique; the papaya had shrimp, scallops, and abalone in it with a mayo/cheese sauce - Whole fish: steamed with soy sauce and scallions - Cabbage: stewed with meat, presented in a small cake like form (they put it in a bowl and just flipped the bowl over as the mold) - Duck soup There were also sweets to finish - steamed cakes, sweet red bean soup, and fish. The papaya seafood dish was probably one of the more interesting things I've had for a while. I can see that they get credit for creativity with dishes. That said, service was just ok - not like American, Japanese, or European Michelin level service. However, the management team did check in, and they were really nice. A few other notes: - this place is huge and has many stories - bathrooms are clean - like with many other places, water is by the bottle only

Yelp
Nice decor in dining area on 2nd floor. Very friendly & attentive service throughout. All 3 dishes ordered were authentic, with quality ingredients and taste bud pleasing. Too bad that we did feel the unwelcoming MSG effect afterward.

Yelp
For a restaurant with a Michelin Star, I was honestly expecting more in terms of taste. The establishment itself really looks a picture: warm and strong lighting accentuates the tapestries, scrolls, and paintings adorning the walls. The tables are simply and traditionally decorated. The food was good, but nothing super exceptional: the roast duck and curry bread were fine, but maybe all the great reviews I read about this place placed my expectations too high. I will say that they do not skimp on quality ingredients, though. So come for the atmosphere and for swanky pictures.
