17 Black-Owned Coffee Shops Across LA

"More of a community center than a cafe, Watts Coffee House’s origins can be traced all the way back to 1965, when a group of local teens converted an abandoned building into Watts Happening Coffee House - a community arts space that later became an epicenter for Black artists, activists, and residents. Today, owner and chef Desiree Edwards, a Los Angeles native, uses that space to serve soul food like Cajun fried lobster tail, shrimp poboys, and buttermilk biscuits smothered in turkey sausage gravy. Available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 249-4343 to place an order." - kat hong

LOVE this place! Possibly the best kale salad in Los Angeles. Top notch coffee drinks. Yet, what I love most is that it fills my heart as well as my belly. As with the former location on Central, the murals inside evoke a sense of history and connection, and there is a real sense of community cultivated by the team. It's intimately connected to LA's peace building movement and just steps from iconic locations like the Watts Towers, Charles Mingus Music Center, and the Rainbow Bridge. Really worth a visit!
