Chef Behind Amrina to Open Fried Chicken Concept in Midtown - Eater Houston

"The Kahani Social Group, the team behind the acclaimed Woodlands restaurant Amrina, has signed a lease for fried chicken restaurant Pok Pok Po, according to a press statement. The restaurant is the group’s second culinary venture. Brothers Surpreet and Preet Paul Singh and Michelin Plate chef Jassi Bindra will open the restaurant in the original location of the French restaurant Artisans in the heart of Midtown. Situated near restaurants such as JINYA Ramen Bar, Piola’s, and Gen Korean BBQ, fried chicken will be the focus at Pok Pok Po, as well as a selection of eclectic sides, housemade condiments, and sauces. 'The inspiration for Pok Pok Po stemmed from the overwhelming success of our fried chicken brunches at Amrina,' Singh said in the statement. 'We knew there was something truly special about our fried chicken, and we’re excited to bring that magic to Pok Pok Po.' Pok Pok Po is slated to open in late summer. The restaurant will be located at 3201 Louisiana Street." - Kayla Stewart

Yelp
Jinya has always been one of my favorite places for ramen around town, and the Midtown location is my favorite out of all their locations around Houston area. I've been coming to this location for over 10 years, and the quality has always been super consistent and delicious. Being in Midtown, the restaurant definitely does get very packed, especially on the weekends, so it can get a bit difficult to find parking in the attached garage or the surrounding street parking if you go during busy hours. The tables/seats are a bit small and close together, so it does get pretty loud in the restaurant. The ambiance is dark and casual, and the servers are always friendly. For the foods, you really can't miss with whatever you order. There is a wide selection of ramen to choose from, and the broths are always super flavorful. You can customize the spice level, add additional toppings, and/or substitute the ramen noodle. My absolute favorite ramen are the Jinya Tonkotsu Black ramen and the Wonton Chicken Ramen. I also really love their rice bowls, especially the Pork Chashu bowl. I also really like their selections of appetizers, especially the Pork Gyoza and the Takoyaki.

Yelp
Solid ramen. Young crowd. Great for casual date or late dinner with a group of friends since its open late. They have a bunch of table options as well as community tables for larger parties or more efficient / cramped seating. Their wheel house is the solid variety of ramen. consistently well executed. my goto is the rich flavorful tonkotsu. they also have other varieties to keep it interesting. The six piece takoyaki is delicious and a solid appetizer. The sides and combos are a little bit or miss. the combos seem like a good value but the portions are small so I'm not sure they are worth it. e.g. eg the curry and salad for $11 is a small bowl of rice and a bit of basic Japanese curry and a bowl of house salad with a bit of ginger dressing. The service is reasonable. They get busy sometimes. Its a bit loud inside so its a little difficult to talk. The parking is a challenge. The attached parking garage is shared with other restaurants and gets full.

Yelp
2nd time here! And I love it again and again! Service is excellent!!! The attention to detail in restaurant and service and food is amazing!!! The ambiance is very chill and enjoyable! Background music is great! We ordered shrimp wonton ramen, the spicy tuna tacos, JINYA Bun, shrimp tempura in spicy Mayo and panna cotta for dessert! Almost forgot about my drink lychetini!!! Savory, just the right spice! Perfect moist and juicy shrimp wontons!! All combined in my ramen soup OML!!! Warmth just before the cold flu season is perfect!!! JINYA BUN!! Don't skip it, bun is spongy and pork belly is perfectly cooked! Just delicious!!! The spicy Mayo shrimp crunchyyy and savory!!! Big portions and well worth every bite!!! The spicy tuna tacos could use a little more flavor!! Crunchy shell was delicious The panna cotta dessert is omg!!! Like a Mexican flan with caramel sauce and crunchy chewy pieces in vanilla ice cream! Perfect combo of flavors and textures The lycheetini reminded me of my elementary years lol too much cough medicine! So pass on that

Yelp
My virgin voyage here... first time Ramen eater! Not feeling well so we ordered in and this is SO GOOD! I got the chicken ramen and it's spiced up well. We ordered a side of rice with minced onions and I threw it in the bowl too! You won't be sorry ordering from Jinya!

Yelp
Jinya locations in midtown and heights are always a good time. I really liked the indoor aesthetic of this location and having a community table is a nice touch. I will say it was a little loud so it was hard to hear each other but the food was really good! Service was good, our waiter was very helpful. I always opt for a spicy creamy vegan ramen with a side of broccolini which always comes out super crisp and flavorful.

Yelp
This place was so nice and food was so good. Now when I usually go get ramen I only will get the beef ramen because I don't eat pork. But they did not have any beef so I had to try the chicken. Now I'm usually skeptical on chicken because if they use breast it's usually dry. But when I tell you the chicken breast was tender as can be! Oh yes! It was so tender and the ramen broth was so tasty and complex in depth with flavor I could not believe it! I wanted medium spice but should have gotten the spiciest since it wasn't that spicy enough for me. I also added a seasoned egg which was an extra charge and fresh garlic which was free. That garlic made it even better! Our waitress was really great she explained the menu and was very helpful and answered all our questions that we had without any problems. She was very attentive which is hard to come by these days in restaurants with the younger people working. We all ordered I believe it was called the Samurai martini which was really good! A must get when you are there. The restaurant itself was very well done and really pretty. If I come again I will sit up at the bar at the front that where you are able to look outside and enjoy the view from the floor to ceiling glass windows. A very good place my only criticism is please add a beef ramen option to the menu. But I'm definitely glad we came and I have the chicken ramen a chance!

Yelp
REALLY delicious place. I got the spicy chicken ramen (mild) and it was amazing! I love that they have so many broth options as well. It is also a really interesting interior as there is a really large table, so you can end up sitting next to others (but you still feel like you have your own space). The ramen was delicious, it wasn't too spicy (I'd probably go up a spice level next time), and the chicken was amazing! They also have lots of little sauces on every table, so I made mine a bit spicier. Yum!

Yelp
Love this place for small bites! I actually haven't tried the ramen. I go here off hours to grab a small bite usually and a drink. The staff is very sweet and they have some fun cocktails.

Yelp
The ramen here was so yummy! I highly recommend to anyone that is looking for a good ramen spot. The ambiance reminds me of Gen.

Yelp
We went on a Monday and there was no wait. The interior was fresh and modern with Asian vibes. We got gyoza, crispy rice with spicy tuna, ramen, and kids meals. The gyoza was fine. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was delicious - full of flavor, textural contrast, and fresh fish. The ramen was very good. I personally would have liked a little more broth but not badly enough to order more, and it did have great flavor. The kids meals were huge! The got ramen, rice bowls, kaarage chicken, and ice cream. They were a great value and it was all done very well. Cocktails were good, too. I'd go back if in the area again.

Yelp
One of my fave ramen places! Our waitress was so friendly and helpful! Quick service and delicious ramen!

Yelp
This is my second visit to Jinya over the span of a year and my second visit was just as delicious and lovely as my first! I feel like it rarely happens that your second visit to a restaurant matches your expectations or memory from your first visit, so that is a testament to the excellent quality and service at Jinya. This time, I tried the Tonkotsu Black which was delicious with a jammy egg and tender pork. Our server was very kind, attentive, and fast! Our food arrived shortly after ordering. We ate our ramen while nestled in a cozy booth along the wall. The dim lighting creating a comfortable atmosphere. The level of noise in the restaurant was perfect - not too quiet or too loud so it was easy to focus on the food and conversation at hand. I will be returning in the near future with new friends to try Jinya's incredible ramen!

Yelp
Greta service and yummy food! Busy but spaced out tables so doesn't feel squished- fun ambiance! Very accommodating for dietary restrictions

Yelp
First time coming to Jinya, i was happy that I came! The food was great, it was during their happy hour time and I got the seafood ramen bowl. Can't remember the name, i know i had shrimp potstickers, those were delicious, and so was the broth! I didn't get beef/pork broth, i asked for a vegetarian or seafood one... very good, would come back.
google avatar

Mariel T.

Yelp
It did the trick for needing immediate ramen in the area. Stars of the show: Tonkotsu black Lychee mule Okay: Sautéed broccolini Tonkotsu original Flavors were good, but I'd rather they pack a bit more punch
google avatar

Aqsa A.

Yelp
Spicy creamy vegan ramen with shrimp wontons. Service was excellent and food was fresh and warm.

Jannipa K.

Yelp
I tried this restaurant because I went to the one in California location before I liked it. I stopped by at this restaurant after a long walk from NASA museum. I was a a little bit disappointed about food. The appetizers were good. I ordered chicken karaoke and gyōza but all the ramen were salty and blend. My mom ordered vegan ramen which was very salty. Service was slow. I needed to ask for water and tea for several time.
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
The pork chashu bowl is SO good, the small fills me up, there's no need for regular. The noodles in the ramen are so good too! They seem very like rich and almost hand made because they have the perfect thickness. Broth is also very nice. Pork gyoza are a must get here, they are perfect amount of crispy. The mocktails are also very refreshing here: the aloha and the forgot my ID, I like the mint one. Staff are very respectful and friendly. You get your food quick. The seating is not a lot so on a weekend dinner, I would reserve. The inside feels upscale and very cozy, nice date night spot or dinner with a friend!
google avatar

Eli N.

Yelp
Easy in and out. Very small plated food. They do have rice bowls and ramen which is more filling and they have lots of options to choose from. Service was good and timeliness of food to table was great. They also have outdoor seating which is nice for the cooler months.
google avatar

Alice W.

Yelp
They serve some of the best tasting ramen in Houston. My favorite ramen here is the tonkotsu black. The soup is rich and full of umami, the noodles are perfectly cooked, and has a good amount of toppings. I also really enjoy the crispy chicken. The food is excellent and the kitchen is efficient. However, the atmosphere is loud with really loud, fast music playing making the dining experience feel stressful, hurried, and not relaxing.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston! The ambience is perfect for a date night or HH. The servers are always awesome, welcoming you in Japanese and departing you the same way. The food of course is the highlight. The Flying Vegan Harvest ramen, vegan Impossible Gyozas, and the vegan Impossible Tacos are my obsessions!
google avatar

Tom H.

Yelp
Place is legit! Place is clean and service is impeccable. You can tell when someone is running a joint correctly and these folks knock it out of the park. Dare you to try the Shrimp Tempura (small bites menu) and Tonkatsu Black Ramen!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
delicious ramen with great flavors and an option to get thicker noodles (which personally i prefer). the takoyaki was fluffy and warming appetizer to start with. love coming back to this place whenever the craving for ramen kicks in. it is on the pricey side so have to save this for date nights and special nights. date night ambiance with friendly service.
google avatar

Julia H.

Yelp
This was my first time going to JINYA but my Dad had been here a bunch of times and said the ramen was super good. I had high expectations because I LOVEEEE ramen! They have a pretty extensive menu with lots of options for ramen lovers and those who are looking for something else (rice bowls, small plates) Super nice restaurant staff, and the food was excellent! I got the Crispy Rice With Spicy Tuna which was amazing, not too spicy which was perfect for me. The JINYA Tonkotsu Black was excellent and the thin noodles were perfect. I really enjoyed the flavor of the broth. A bit pricey but felt like it was worth it for the quality of the food! Will definitely be back to try other things on the menu.

Yelp
Our favorite place to grab ramen!! The appetizers and drinks are great too. It can get pretty busy on the weekends but if you have a smaller party the tables flip quickly and there isn't usually too much of a wait. There is a parking garage but it can be very difficult to find a spot at night on the weekend so be prepared to street park or find another lot to park in.
google avatar

Jaz M.

Yelp
There's street parking available on the left side only. The restaurant is on the right side. We were greeted upon entry and seated immediately. Our waitress, I can't remember her name but I want to say it started with an E was amazing. She made great recommendations and took great care of us. Our food also came out fairly quickly. The lychee martini was good and not too strong. I appreciate the real lychee in the drink as some restaurants don't do this. The impossible pot stickers weren't my fav but my two other friends enjoyed. This was a nice ramen with good flavor but the wheat noodle style and texture wasn't my favorite. Overall about a 7.8/10. Recommended.
google avatar

Hannah M.

Yelp
Best ramen bar in Houston. It never disappoints and always hits the spot when I'm craving something warm hearty and delicious
google avatar

Farh E.

Yelp
Really enjoyed the ramen here! They had multiple vegan options and you can control how spicy it is. You can also add more toppings if you like to customize it. The spicy vegan ramen was sooo delicious! The seasoning of the broth was perfect and creamy! I cannot wait to go back to eat there again! There was no wait when I went Saturday afternoon! There is a parking garage behind the restaurant as well
google avatar

Yelp
In the past, I havent had the best experience staff wise, but lately the past few times I have came back and enjoyed everything about my visit. Service was great, staff was kind and attentive and food was delicious! Also love the city vibe of the restaurant, feels luxurious. Parking is tricky, since you need to get street parking but hey thats downtown for ya!
google avatar

Markeda D.

Yelp
Wonderful service! Friendly welcoming for everyone from the staff and the service is quick and accommodating. The ambiance is beautiful! The drinks match the vibes and are actually very very good and not too strong. However we were not fans of the ramen. I ordered the cha cha cha which is on the secret menu available for a limited time. The gyozas were okay but I wasn't crazy about them.
google avatar

Lyndsey M.

Yelp
The food and drinks are great. They have a full bar and the bartenders are pretty good. Most of the ramen is delicious and the tempura brussel sprouts are a must. The service is very efficient. They know how to get people in and out very quickly. They are often very busy, but they still are able to get parties seated pretty quickly and turn tables over. The only downside to this is that they try to fit as many people as possible and sometimes the seating arrangements can be a bit tight, especially at the large communal table in the middle of the restaurant. Parking here is pretty convenient with street parking and an attached garage.

Yelp
Great Food Friendly staff top notch customer service! Perfect for a family night out!
google avatar

Meghana J.

Yelp
Ambiance- 10/10 Food- the crispy cauliflower was surprisingly my favorite thing. The ramen is of course delicious too, the noodles taste fresh, and there are so many options of broth (extremely vegetarian friendly for a ramen spot) Have tried many Jinya locations, and the Houston one also does not disappoint
google avatar

Dave G.

Yelp
Really great food and really great service! Food came out fast and was amazing. Always a huge fan of the drinks as well. Only complaint would be that the restaurant is pretty dark. If you have poor vision, you'll want to use your phone's flashlight or something to read the menu. Parking is also a pain, so I would suggest rideshare! Theres also a boba place next door if you're wanting a tea drink afterwards!

Yelp
This place is a total vibe. The servers are nice and the ambiance is perfect for a first date. The portions are big and for both the ramen and the crispy chicken. I had gotten the spicy chicken ramen level spicy and my boyfriend had gotten the spicy tonkatsu level spicy. First off spicy is their 2nd level of spice out of 3 and it was not spicy at all. I am not saying that it is not spicy because it was not spicy enough it was not spicy at all as if it was mild. If you love spicy food just skip straight to hot. My boyfriend liked the tonkatsu, he said the pork belly was the most tender he had ever had and the ramen itself was decent. The spicy chicken was alright. The chicken chunks tasted gross to me and it was not as flavorful as I would have liked. The best part was the seasoned egg. Conclusion: If you are looking for traditional Japanese ramen this is not it. The fact that this is the best in Houston is sad to me. This is good ramen if you have never had ramen before. It's not bad it's just I am used to traditional ramen and my expectations were high.

Yelp
I particularly love this midtown houston location . It's cute and intimate with easy access in a convenient location . Each time I visit, I walk strait to the bar and order a plum wine (Japanese wine) and place my food order . Their service is pleasant and very helpful and accommodating . Always been friendly and hospital. The ambiance is cute and love a good date night at this location . I love a good Ramen !

Yelp
I love jinya! I have been here a couple of times now and the inside is super nice and cozy. They make plenty of seating work in a smaller area. I always get the tonkotsu ramen and green tea mochi for dessert. The prices aren't bad at all and I'm always satisfied. The servers were very nice and quick with ordering our food and getting it out. Our wait time was 15 minutes on a Tuesday night and it went by so fast. Overall great experience!

Yelp
TL;DR - my favorite ramen spot with fast service, quality ramen, and solid options. I come here every few weeks whenever I have a ramen craving. Food - I usually go for the JINYA Tonkatsu Black but I also love the Shrimp Wonton Ramen and their seasonal chicken karage ramen. Each component of the ramen is executed perfectly. The noodles are fresh and perfectly cooked (not too soggy), the pork is packed full of marinated flavor, the egg is runny on the inside and marinated for a couple days, the broth has a solid umami taste that only comes from careful and patient cooking with quality ingredients, and all the other toppings are very fresh as well. My usual order is the JINYA Bun, a Tonkatsu Black, and finished with either mochi ice cream or the panna cotta. Service - the wait staff service is pretty standard but the kitchen service is super fast because our food usually comes within 5-10 minutes of ordering. Ramen doesn't take long to cook and assemble, and they do it efficiently here. Ambiance - it can sometimes get a quite loud when it is busy inside, which can make it a bit difficult to hear the person across from you. I like to sit at the bar for lunch because it's a lot quieter. The interior has dim lighting and polished wooden tables.

Yelp
I love this place. Whenever I'm craving a noodle bowl, this is my go to spot. The food is delicious! The broth warms my soul. I definitely appreciate the time it takes to make. Regardless of the location I visit, the service is always attentive and prompt. The ambiance varies by location, but all are very nice. The newest location I believe is Spring Branch offers very comfortable padded seats. This works for those with back problems. On a cool day a noodle bowl hits the spot. Note: Chef specials are really good.

Yelp
Cute spot for date night! Drinks are good. Food okay. I really enjoyed the Octopus Balls!

Yelp
Really disappointed in this Jinya.... I don't normally write reviews but I was motivated to share that this Jinya was awful. Food took foreverrrr and was cold. I think they totally forgot about me. Service took extra long.
google avatar

Edward Y.

Yelp
Noodles are good, but the soup is too salty! Music is too loud, feel stressful and have to get out of there asap! Waiter send us an orange when we ordered orange juice ! We thought it was a lemon ! But we still got billed for $1 for the mystery orange .
google avatar

Isabella M.

Yelp
Love this restaurant and the vibes! The Ramen is delicious and the kids meal comes with a lot! Servers were also super nice! Very much recommended!
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
Tried this place at the recommendation of a friend that wanted to try it. Glad I did. First, some of the best Ramen I've had so far, which was a pleasant surprise. Had a bunch of apps that were all delicious. Soju selection was VERY a good. Additionally finished it off with some mochi that was also very good. My only gripe... Waiter was good, but could have been a bit more intelligent as he simply read us the menu vs knowing his stuff.
google avatar

Sylvester L.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of this franchise! They have "casual chic" sewn up for a stress-free date or whatever you choose to do at Jinyas... I've made some really good friends over shared meals at the "J" Hopefully, they'll go over big "Up Top" as well, as the Houston Market!
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
All of the employees were super friendly and our waitress had great recommendations. We each ordered Ramen and the potstickers to start as well as a JINYA Bun. Out of our three ramens I definitely think the spicy miso with ground pork was the best!
google avatar

Ravi K.

Yelp
We recently went back to this restaurant on Friday night. It was super busy and we had to wait for 40 minutes before we could get our table. Service was quick and the food was great as always. We ordered vegan ramen and fried russel sprouts. When I write a cheque, i generally write the total amount to be paid which also includes the tip. When i saw the charge on my credit card, I realized that i have been charged 76 cents more than what I wrote on the cheque. I am sure because $50 is not a difficult number to remember. Yet i was charged $50.76. Its not about the 76 cents but the unethical practice which makes me think how much they would have made by skimming off few cents from every other customer. I am disappointed.

Rubi M.

Yelp
The ramen soup is awesome! The size, price and flavor is great, very clean and excellent service!
