We were lucky enough to have dinner at Lucia last Saturday. I'm pretty sure it will only be getting tougher and tougher to get a reservation, as they are really firing on all cylinders.
Yes, it has an incredible and unique design. It feels like a super chic pop-up lounge was dropped into an industrial warehouse. There are giant clamshell banquets, and a massive sculpture/structure that serves as the bar, and there is a DJ... and that's all cool, but if the food didn't deliver none of that would matter and this place would be forgotten. But the food does deliver.
However, before the food, the cocktails need to be mentioned. They're fantastic. While they put twists on drinks (such as the Okra Martini, the Oxtail Old Fashioned, Chado Beni Eastside, and more) none of it is gimmicky or heavy handed. All the drinks (and among our group of 4 we tried and got to taste at least 6) make sense and are well balanced and layered.
Oh and quick shout out - the service was excellent. Professional and attentive. Pleasant and friendly. Obviously they're turning tables, but we never felt pressure.
The food is great. It's unique but familiar. Refined yet comforting. I'm not going to say every dish was a home run, but the overall experience was incredible. You might look at my notes and wonder why it was still 5 stars, but I do think while a few dishes weren't perfect the cumulative effect of this meal was top level.
Our meal:
Coconut Milk Bread - Fantastic. The Thyme butter is packed with flavor and the bread is soft and delicious (but don't skip the butter)
Saltfish & Figs Croquette - I remember enjoying eating it and then pretty much immediately forgetting it. I know the dipping sauce packed flavor, but if you told me there was no sailfish or fig in that little fried ball I would believe you. It could basically have been a nice hushpuppy (which I like, but not what we ordered)
Waygu Patty's - DO NOT SKIP. We almost didn't get this and that would have been a huge mistake. They are incredible and each sauce take this dish on a different ride (both delicious rides)
Shrimp Toast - I went around and around on this. It was the dish I was most excited about, and I have to say it let me down a bit. I think like the croquette the deep frying left it just a bit greasy and therefor the shrimp, pepper or even the aioli flavors were pretty much lost.
Spring Greens - It was a nice salad. Actually appreciated as a bit of bright and light between some heavy and fried dishes, but I don't think I'd order again. It was a nice salad.
Coconut Fried Chicken - DO NOT SKIP. This was the dish I wake up thinking about. So many things done right. Impossibly crispy. Bursting with flavor and in such a weird little way the MVP of this dish are these little bits of fresh dill that seem to perfectly cut through the richness.
Oxtail Pepper Pot - Yeah, I would say do not skip on this too, if not for the chicken taking that top spot for me. For as impossibly crispy as the chicken was, the oxtail was impossibly rich. I think by this time we were all pretty full and we could only take a few bites. But it's oxtail done right.
Overall highly recommend and look forward to returning.
