Ghee Indian Kitchen - Review - Design District - Miami - The Infatuation

"Editor's Note: Ghee Design District has closed, but their Dadeland location remains open. Parents will never admit to having a favorite child. Maybe you completely understand this if you’re a parent, but if you’re not - and you’d like to understand - come to Ghee and order a lot of food. Then, after you’ve had the white truffle porcini paratha, the plantain chaat, and the turmeric marinated grouper in that coconut curry that made you feel a love so intense you almost launched into the “You Complete Me” monologue from Jerry Maguire, look down at it all and try to pick a favorite. You’ll get it. If there is one restaurant in Miami where you should keep coming back until you consume the entire menu, it’s Ghee. That’s not because they’ll frame your picture on the wall next to the scraps of the smoked lamb neck you ate in seven minutes flat, but because the thought of missing out on even one of these dishes is enough to keep us up at night, having a nightmare about the samosa we decided to skip. photo credit: Tasty Planet This Indian restaurant is located on the very outer edge of the Design District - between one of those interior design stores where you make your friend guess how much very expensive sofas cost and a boutique plumbing showroom with faucets so fancy they might just spit out sparkling water. These kinds of things are normal in the Design District, but Ghee is not. The only thing you notice about Ghee when you look around is the lovely shade of yellow that makes the restaurant so easy to spot from the street. But really, Ghee lets the food do the talking and it’s a really exciting mix of traditional Indian food and creative variations that we’re pretty sure only exist at their two locations in Miami. photo credit: Tasty Planet How often does one come across a white truffle porcini paratha? After you try it, you’ll wish the answer was every hour, on the hour. The chicken tikka masala is perfectly tender and buttery, and the turmeric-marinated snowy grouper tastes like a fish that’s been fed nothing but coconut and unconditional love for its entire life. The incredible date cake is buried under a snowball of ginger ice cream, and worth getting two of if you happen to be at a table with multiple dessert people. You can order all of this a la carte or via the $55 tasting menu, which gives you an even distribution of snacks, veggies, naan, curries, plates from the grill, and dessert. But you’ll still have a great meal even if you only want to come here for chicken tikka masala and tap water. Just come back soon to try more. And that should be easy since it’s not hard to find an excuse to visit this place. Ghee works for dates, special occasions, dinner with friends, or any random day where you wake up and say to yourself, “It’s been too long since a curry made me get to first base with a spoon.” It’s a place you should make part of your Miami dining routine. Come back as many times as it takes to try everything, and then keep coming back because each season brings a couple of new things to try. Your quest to eat everything at Ghee never really ends, and that is excellent news. Food Rundown Avocado Tuna Bhel The puffed rice is so light and crunchy, and the tuna is tender and fatty. We haven’t been this into a contrasting duo since Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga showed the world that sexual tension has no age limits. Plantain Chaat The sweet plantains are mostly what you’ll taste here, but they play very nicely with the yogurt and tamarind chutney in this dish, which kind of looks and feels like a chunky plantain pudding. Homestead Mango Salad This one is seasonal and very worth getting - especially if you’re someone who looks forward to mango season like it’s Christmas. Lamb Samosa Ghee’s samosas are the best we’ve ever had. The outside is super crispy and they come halved with green mango and mint chutney that you’ll use every last bit of. White Truffle Porcini Paratha We love naan. Naan is great. So please don’t tell naan that if we could only pick one thing from Ghee’s bread section, it’s this. The paratha soaks up all the flavor from the white truffle and turns into a super paratha, which is our new favorite superhero. Turmeric-Marinated Snowy Grouper What a tender, beautiful piece of fish, but we’d order anything that came in this coconut curry. Take off your socks, put them in that coconut curry, and watch us devour them with a smile on our face. Chicken Tikka Masala Sometimes the reliable favorite pulls out all the stops and reminds you why they are legendary. This chicken tikka masala does that. It’s like the New England Patriots, except so much easier to root for. Charred Ribs The ribs are very good, but also very rich and fatty (as good ribs tend to be). They’re great for sharing, but not ideal for tackling on your own. Sticky Date Cake The cake is perfect on its own, but taken to a different dimension thanks to the ginger ice cream. You’re going to get into a spoon fight with whoever you’re splitting this with, so maybe don’t split it with anyone and order your own because it is remarkable and a perfect end for anyone with a sweet tooth." - Ryan Pfeffer

Yelp
Amazing food, service, and great ambiance! I'm currently 7 months pregnant and we drove 30 mins after seeing Peppi's Pizza on Instagram and I will say we will be back with baby in tow. We ordered the Upside Down Pizza and it was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. Each person in our party also ordered a Philly Cheesesteak and it lives up to the hype! I've been craving a traditional cheesesteak from Philly and it satisfied that craving. Also their soft serve ice cream for dessert was the cherry on top. The staff is extremely attentive and friendly and gave us recommendations on foods or drinks. Chef Ryan is super friendly and came out table to table to check how his customers were doing and how their food was which also makes the dining experience extremely personable. Him and his team are doing an absolutely amazing job! Whether you're in the area or not, I highly, HIGHLY recommend making your way over!

Yelp
If you haven' tried Peppi's do yourself the favor and go eat. The pizzas are 10/10 and they got the best philly in town!!! My favorite pizza/philly joint in Miami by far. They also have a great selection of beers Service is top notch, quick wait time even though they were slammed. Very welcoming ambiance, the decorations are very well put together. Go to Peppi's.

Yelp
The best cheesesteak I have ever had in my entire life. I will be dreaming about it. Get there early, they might run out.

Yelp
Finally was able to check out Peppis formerly known as Old Greg's. Similar menu. Staff were very nice and welcoming. Family oriented vibe. Had the Mozzarella appetizer which was ok , it was a little cold. If it would have came out HOT it would have been a perfect 10. Cheese steak was absolutely amazing and the Pizza was delicious. Will definitely return to try out other items on the menu.

Yelp
I came to this place today after a recommendation from Dave Portnoy yesterday, as I follow him on his pizza reviews , I came only for the Philly cheesesteaks, Dave said they were a true Philly experience, it was very disappointing to walk into the place and be greeted by the waiter who said they had none because they ran out of bread. This is unacceptable and very lame. If you know this guy moves markets. Why didn't you prepare yourself for the next day or the days to come?, so I decided to give it a try and just sit down and have a pizza. The pizza was VERY GOOD There are many good pizza places in Miami. The area is very crowded and is difficult to park. It is a very busy intersection, bordering a business a mix residential and business neighborhood, the service was very good. The girl who helped me was very fast and courteous.., not worth the trip back Edit after owner response: Please accept my apologies as I let my emotions drive my review. To be fair, it was ignorant of me to be upset over something you all have no control over. Your pizza was amazing i will be back to have both.

Yelp
If you're a fan of Philly-style sandwiches, you gotta go to Peppi's in Miami! I was excited to try this spot because of the Philly connection...and wow, it did not disappoint! Had to get the cheesesteak with cooper sharp cheese on seeded bread...amazing! probably the best I've had in two decades down here. Also got the cutlet...Just as incredible. Both are solid 10/10s. I already can't wait to go back and try some of the other stuff...though it'll be tough not to reorder these two sandwiches again. Service was on point, with the food arriving at the perfect time. The owner, Ryan, came out to chat with us, which really added to the experience. Now, if only we could convince him to open a second location in Fort Lauderdale! Peppi's is as legit as it gets for Philly-style sandwiches in South Florida. If you haven't been yet, you're missing out!

Yelp
Finally, Miami has a legit Philly Cheesesteak. I'm from South Jersey and I take my Cheesesteaks very seriously. The mistake that a lot of good, but not great, steak sandwich makers make is with the bread. Typically they either get local bread, which doesn't work for a great cheesesteak, or they get Amorosa shipped it in, which isn't a bad idea, but they aren't fresh enough. Peppi's corrects this by making their own sesame seed hoagie rolls which are amazing. I went on January 1st, and it seems like they just opened pretty recently. They didn't have the full menu available, but reading it made my mouth water. My wife and I split a chicken cutler sandwich and a cheesesteak with Cooper's Sharp White American Cheese. The Chicken cutlet was phenomenal. Crispy chicken, great Caesar-esque sauce, pickled peppers, all on that fresh sesame hoagie roll. The Cheesesteak was the best I've had within a 900-mile radius of Miami. I respect that the chef is a traditionalist and only serves Wiz Wit or Coopers Wit, in that his steak sandwiches with Onions and a choice between Wiz and Cooper's Sharp, but I would hope that sweet peppers are added eventually. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of it, but we also brought home a pizza and an Italian Hoagie. The Pizza will easily be a top 10 in Miami. Dave Portnoy needs to make this one a stop. I had heard Old Greg's was great, but I never made it there, so I can't say if it's better or the same, but it's a damn good pizza. I also didn't try the Italian, it looked great, but I was stuffed. I'm already planning on future trips back with various Foodies and Phillyites.

Yelp
Chef Ryan was very friendly! Came and chatted with us for a few minutes after our meal . The cheesesteak was 9/10 and the pizza 9/10. Happy Pepsis didn't disappoint and we will be back!

Yelp
This place is a joke! We waited 30 minutes for a table, which was fine, but then when they told us which table to go to, it was still dirty from the previous diners. We waited patiently for someone to clean it. The server / hostess commented that it was "only crumbs" and asked us to sit at the table next to it. This table still had drinks on it and grease from the previous table. When we commented that this table was also dirty, she started pulling out napkins from the dispenser on the table. The napkins were stuck so she just had bits and pieces of the ripped off shreds. She tried to clean our table with the balled up napkin in her hand. We said no thank you and left. For a restaurant to blatantly regard basic levels of sanitation, only makes me wonder what the kitchen is like. I don't care how good the food is, there's not a chance in hell I'm eating here.

Yelp
Saw this place on Dave Portnoy 's pizza review. Dave was right about this place. We had the 3 little pigs pizza( pepperoni sausage and bacon) . This was delicious. We also had 3 sandwiches-- roasted pork with broccoli rabe and long hots( needed more juice). Chicken parm and Philly cheesesteak ( second best steak I ever had - Angelo's in Philadelphia is best) . Staff was very friendly, came over to the table a couple of times to check on everything. I know the next time I'm in Miami I am stopping here again

Yelp
Sad to see that Old Greggs is gone, however not sad because its been replaced by something much better. I love cheesesteaks and Ive seen all the IG hype so I had to come try it myself. It small cozy space, we walked in took a look at the menu and we were greeted by the owner Ryan who took our order. My friend wanted a couple of slice but we were informed that they only do pies. I wanted to try some of this pizza as well so we went ahead and got a Pepperoni pie. Ryan came out with our food and talked to us for a bit. Ryan took good care of us. The type of hospitality us northerners are used to. It almost felt like a Ny spot. The cheesesteak itself was amazing. Only knock that I have is it could have been slightly more cheezy, but this is top notch cheesesteak. Soft bread, quality meat and onions and that cooper-sharp. This is definitely the best Cheesesteak in Miami without a doubt. I have to say the pizza is no pushover either. Definitely somewhere in the Top 5 conversation in Miami. The Cheesesteak is a lil on the pricey side at $19 but its downtown Miami. Plus it's huge! Its definitely worth every penny. The hardest thing about going to Peppis is deciding whether to get the pizza or the Cheesesteak. Cant wait to go back and try to some of their other menu items. Will definitely be coming back here

Yelp
TikTok and influencers are really hyping up many restaurants with terrible food and this is one of them. I really had high expectations for this place looks great on paper but when you get down to it doesn't cut it for me didn't like the owner rude would an attitude pretend he knows what cheese steaks are supposed to taste like Talk trash to every other cheesesteak especially Philadelphia when you love your hometown you don't talk bad about where you come from I will not be coming here. I do not recommend anybody to come here. Go to Jersey Mike's food's better and cheaper cheesesteak was crunchy not supposed to be like that. All the bread was burnt and tasted bad.

D S.

Yelp
After the owner blasted many people for their honest reviews he went back and edited them after I called him out. I'm very sorry but the rudeness of your employees definitely comes from you. It all starts with leadership.

Yelp
Had an issue with them being closed after driving down. Place has been beyond busy and I have not been able to try food. Owner reached out to me after that bad experience and has been super accountable and wanting to make it right. Can't wait to see if hype is real. May need to wait until it dies down... has to be so busy for a reason

Yelp
Walked in for a quick bite last night. Decided to sit at the bar and have a casual dinner. We ordered the spicy rigatoni, red pizza and Philly cheesesteak. Wow! Everything was delicious. The pasta was cooked to perfection. The sauce was a little thick but the consistency allowed for you to dab some off. The pizza was cooked perfectly. Under carriage was a 10. The Philly cheesesteak was phenomenal. We ordered the white cheese and although the sesame through us off at the beginning. I was craving more after the first bite. I will definitely be back. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. My only complaint is that I would have lived to space the dishes out but I will let me waiter know next time.

Yelp
Pizza was ehh.. more sauce than cheese.. we asked for no oregano came loaded with it.. we also ordered 2 sandwiches one cheese steak and drunken cutlet... the sandwiches came out 15min apart from each other the drunken cutlet was really good. the cheese steak was average. the wife and i couldn't eat together and the pizza came out 20 min after the last sandwich so 5yr old basically had to wait until be both ate until his pizza came... I honestly don't see the hype there's plenty of pizza and cheese steak places around that are better imo.. don't let the food bloggers kid you.. was it good?ehh it was ok.. i wouldn't wait for 30-40 min for a table..

Yelp
I've been waiting for a decent Miami Philly cheese steak for about three years. I happy to report the wait has ended! And I live nearby! Peppi's has a strange location, off of 36th St by 95. Lots of traffic for all different directions, but luckily there's a parking lot next door. So let's start from the beginning: 1. You can eat in or take out. The joint has a few different types of pizzas, which I didn't try, but I hear are good, and a few different heros. 2. There's a small bar that serves wine or beer. I ordered a Philly cheese steak (choice of Cooper Sharp Cheese or Cheese Wiz). I ordered the Cooper. Good choice. A very delightful woman at the bar took orders. She had such a happy demeanor, she had everyone smiling. She was from the Canary Islands. I don't know if everyone from the Canary Islands are so happy, or if they're so unhappy there and real happy to leave, but she was charming. 3. They make their own bread at Peppi's, and can only make so many loaves, so they limit the number of heros you can order to one per person. I think that's pretty incredible and also pretty charming. I ordered a lager while I waited. My to go order arrived before I could finish even half my beer. I'm not the fasted beer drinker but I not the slowest either. My point is, the order came out really fast. Which brings me to my next point: 4. The owner of the place is very much on-premises and in the mix. Back in the day, all businesses were run with an on-premise owner who made sure things ran properly. The owner cared about his and the business' reputation. That sounds pretty ridiculous now and very old fashioned, which is beyond sad. But at Peppi's, the owner clearly cares. And it shows. Because when I came home... 5. I sank my teeth into that Philly cheese hero. It was masterful. The beef was high quality. Very tasty and well-cooked. There was just the right amount of cheese and it was perfectly melted (the key to a great Philly cheese hero). The bread was fresh and delicious. I could have eaten another half hero, but rules are rules (and diets are diets). In summation, this was a great experience from beginning to end. It did not disappoint in any way. I'm seriously considering going back tonight and maybe every night for the next week, to get this out of my system. I hope you'll enjoy your trip to Peppi's.

Lili W.

Yelp
Love this place!! The Philly cheesesteaks were amazing, I had both the cooper sharp and cheese wiz and both were phenomenal. It is totally worth the wait! Cant wait to be back!

Yelp
Meh... coming from Brooklyn NY , I've noshed at some of the best cheesesteaks spots in the tri-state area. I somewhat consider myself a pizza, bagel, hero/sub/hoagie (whatever you want to call it) connoisseur. I had the cheesesteak with the wiz. Is it good? Yes, it's very good! Am I full? No! Do I feel satisfied with my lunch craving? Absolutely NOT! $20+ for a half sub left me disappointed and hangry!! Not worth the hype! Are their better or similar quality cheesesteaks in Dade or Broward County? For Sure! For example, Sonny's Famous Steak Hoagies in Broward is a way better value & is equally delicious for half the price. (Cash only). The quality of the meat product & portion size is the same & both their breads are baked in house, minus the sesame seeds. (I do like seeded rolls), I'm willing to give Peppi's another shot as they've got other sandwiches & menu items that are right up my alley, so I'll be back.

Yelp
I had a very disappointing experience at Peppi's Pizza @ 3620 NE 2nd Ave Miami, FL 33137 . The staff was incredibly rude. When I asked a question because the girl taking my order couldn't hear me, After repeating my order twice, I was passed to another staff member who made those dismissive remarks. I was told to "read the English on the menu and figure out what I was ordering.' Then he walked away. Frustrated, I left and commented that they were all rude. When I called to speak to the owner, he told me not to come back, but he also said he didn't want my business. The owner threatened me on the phone call as well, what a joke. I will never return to this place, and I urge others to think twice before visiting such a terrible place that treats people the way they do, who are wanting to try their food. After I hung up with the owner, they tried to call me from the business from (786) 391-2624. Certainly, i don't recommend this place to anyone. Stay away from it its not worth the visit to deal with business that doesn't appreciate its customers George

Yelp
I tried this brand new pizza place and it did not disappoint. Had the chicken cutlet sandwich and DAMN it was good. Owners are a sweet couple. The service was prompt and welcoming. The overall mood and vibe was great. Definitely recommend to anyone and everyone!! I'll definitely be back

Yelp
Two weeks my boyfriend was googling "best cheesesteak in Miami and he came across "Peppis Pizza" however didn't choose it that day bc we hit up love and gyros....anyways , a couple days ago while scrolling thru our reels on ig we saw that freaking Dave from Barstools came here to peppis before us and freaking beat us to the review, so we were upset lol Today on this beautiful Sunday in Miami aka the best city in the world we live in, we decided to come try out the cheesesteak ... when we got here we were a little bit mad because the line was long and we are Miami inpatient and self entitled , but we said let's go anyways...first and foremost someone tell Dave Portnoy that the cheesesteak is not no goddamn 8.5 it's a 9.5+ , I only don't give tens out because nothing is perfect. My bread wasn't burnt like he said his was. For the win, I didn't feel like the sandwich needed mayonnaise which almost every sandwich I eat is A must have. My guy Friend thought the sandwich was just right however I felt like maybe a little bit more onions would've been clutch for my taste. Anyways, the hype is real on the cheesesteak , the place is fire. Go check it out. And the girl working the bar was a sweetheart, they even gave my French bulldog a little peperroni(I don't think that's good for him , but yolo). OK I'm done you guys enjoy

Yelp
Gave this place a second chance and loved it! You should do a cheesesteak Stromboli!!

Heather S.

Yelp
The staff is incredibly rude & the atmosphere gave off racist vibes. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner, immediately upon walking in we were behind an African American family of 4 and were ready to wait. The waitress told us to have a seat. The waitress told the family they would have to wait outside until a table opened up for them, I immediately felt the tension that they were unwelcome. I told the waitress we would gladly move over so they could push the two tables together to make room for the family, she replied "oh we don't do that" as someone who has been in the industry for 18 years myself there's always something to accommodate guests! The 1930's music playing inside didn't help either. After about 15 minutes the father comes inside and asks to be served at the outside tables since the website clearly says "outdoor dining" and she said "nope that's a waiting area only" and again, refused service. I've never seen anyone treated so poorly, it made us feel extremely uncomfortable, I told them to box my stuff up and we left. We will not be back. Their employees need a serious attitude adjustment!!! Everyone should be treated equal, there's no reason why two tables couldn't have been moved together for that family.

Yelp
Tried Peppi's Pizza this past week and had a great experience! We tried the pizza and the chicken cutlet sandwich and it was sooo good! So glad to have Peppi's in the neighborhood!

Yelp
It's got big boots to fill after Old Greg's closed, and they've only been open a week when we stopped by. But I think they're on to something, and I hope they can stick it out. Staff were very attentive, and the food was solid. For now though, I'd add more cheese to the Red Pie, more salt to the Cheesesteak, turn the music up and that neon sign down.

Matt S.

Yelp
Miami's best pizza and the best cheesesteak that I've ever had. Everything that I have ordered there has been great!

Sandra D.

Yelp
I loved the cheesesteak and the atmosphere! Very impressed with the quality. It is the closest to authentic Philly cheesesteaks in Miami. I can't wait to go back to try more items.

Steve B.

Yelp
This spot is definitely a vibe. Food is delish and a nice place to take a date. Get the cheesesteak

Lauren E.

Yelp
South Philly style pizza & hoagies. Absolutely amazing!! Can't wait to go back. 10/10

Yelp
Outstanding cheesesteak! As a native Philadelphian who moved to Miami in 2019, I have been searching for an authentic cheesesteak for five years. A few places have been close, but nobody got it right (including Old Greg's) except for Peppi's. Down to the bread and the Cooper sharp cheese, this place tasted authentic out of South Philly. I am excited to go back and try the hot roast pork and the tomato pie, and another steak tomorrow for the bird's playoff game. My only suggested improvement was the ordering system. We were the only customers in line and waited some time at the counter before we could place an order. I also saw another customer have an in issue ordering while we were waiting for our food. Other than that, it was great experience with superb food in a really beautiful atmosphere. Also, the owner thanked each guest for coming on their way out- l as I had not tried my to-go order cheesesteak yet, I was not able to tell him how much I appreciated the authenticity. So, by way of this review, thank you!

Special S.

Yelp
Food was great both times. Recommend the upside down pepperoni pizza, and the philly cheesesteak onions, cheesewiz, pickles, mayo. Meatballs also very good. Good service, good atmosphere. Love this new spot. Real pizza not Neapolitan, and real cheesesteaks with real cheesewiz

KN H.

Yelp
Owner/chef was a complete clown and over his head. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Cheese steak was mediocre at best. He berated his workers and everyone could hear exactly what he is saying from the kitchen. It is that small. Wife asked to scoop the bread which every sandwich places does with no problem. He refused to and said he didnt have time. Then she asked for mayo and he said No . Put it on the side. Who tf does he think he is. I am a paying customer who purchased like 8-9 items. All were basic. Nothing special He opened at 5pm and i swear to god he closed abruptly at 5.59 not even an hour later because he was overwhelmed. Lady next to me stated she drove down from Fort lauderdale because he wouldnt take reservations and when she got there they said no more customers and turned her family of 4 away at 6pm. This place is once again an overrated miami pizza shop with overpriced bs and horrible customer service. Save yourself the trip and the money. The Philly lil D head owner was a joke but we should've known he was classless being from there
