Chicago’s Best Diners | Eater Chicago

"3rd Coast Cafe has been serving all-day breakfast in the Gold Coast since 1985 — once a haven for nearby high school students to rebel against their parents to smoke a cigarette. The cafe uses locally sourced eggs and meat for three-egg omelets, pulled pork hash, and breakfast burritos. Scones are always a favorite, made with raspberries, blueberries, or chocolate chips, and served at the bakery counter alongside brownies and cookies" - Sam Nelson

Google
One of me and my friends all time favorite places to eat! We love coming here, the atmosphere is so cute and it feels like a little hideaway in the city. We tell people all the time to come here. I highly recommend the Italian beef sandwich and the fresh lemonade <3

Google
I was visiting Chicago and my lady friend took me to her favorite breakfast spot, Third Coast Café—and now I see why it’s her favorite. The restaurant has a cozy feel with a hint of vintage charm and a nice mix of people that makes it feel welcoming. When I saw Chilaquiles on the menu, I was hesitant—this isn’t a Mexican restaurant, and I’m pretty particular about Mexican dishes since I grew up in a Mexican household. But I decided to give them a try, and wow—I was blown away. They were so, so good. Big shoutout to the cooks and chef who made this dish. I’m already looking forward to coming back for the Chilaquiles!

Google
I went here a couple of times last year when I was staying locally and I still think about it fondly. To someone who is not from the US it felt like a very bona fide Chicago experience. There was a woman on the table next to me on the phone narrating her hip operation in great detail and all the side effects. The woman on my other side had the most complicated martini order I've ever heard, I had to message the group chat about it immediately (the waiter was unfazed). The food came in large portions and was delicious. I get the feeling the interior hasn't changed in 30+ years. The soundtrack, unexpectedly, was Beach House. I loved everything about this place.

Google
I’m still dreaming of their Pesto Eggs Benedict, and those hash browns - perfectly crisped! Highly recommend stopping in for a bite, but be warned it gets very busy and can be a bit noisy. We put our names on the waitlist then popped into the RH next door while we waited. The staff were very friendly and the food was a good value for the price. This is now my go-to breakfast spot when I’m in Chicago and I can’t wait to visit again.

Google
I had a great bfast at 3rd Coast Cafe, a truly local cafe. The quiche is huge. It could have had a little more bacon in it but it was very good if you like egg. The oj and coffee was really good as well as the choc chip scone. Service was great. Def would recommend.

Google
This place has been my go-to for years now, ever since I moved in down the block. Always solid food, very nice staff, and you can have wine. What else could you want? Best hash browns around. Also, amazing scones, tuna salad, and breakfast. A neighborhood gem. Love this place!

Google
We had such a great meal at 3rd Coast Cafe! It’s a cozy, charming spot with a laid-back vibe and friendly service. We ordered the California salad and the marinated chicken sandwich - both were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly portioned. The standout? The bread on the chicken sandwich - hands down the best part! Soft, warm, and just the right amount of chew. It took the whole dish to the next level. Whether you're stopping in for a quick bite or a relaxed meal, this cafe delivers. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
Great service and atmosphere. Despite how crowded and busy it is, the servers are very attentive and it’s a lovely place to sit. Food was okay but not bad. Chilaquiles weren’t that good but everything else was lovely.

Yelp
3rd Coast Cafe has a cozy ambiance with comforting breakfast food and options available for everyone. The service was solid as well. I recommend this spot to anyone looking to enjoy a nice breakfast in a beautiful pocket of the city.

Yelp
3rd Coast was right around the corner from us and was a quick pit stop in the morning. The service was incredibly fast, and we got in and out within 15 minutes. I applaud them for making great food at such a quick pace! We ordered the Diablo Beef with no cheese. The sandwich was great with the au jus. The bread was crispy and wasn't the type to cut up the roof of your mouth. So eating it was a pleasuring experience. The sandwich is a bit small though for the price. The hashbrowns were okay. The outside was crispy, but the inside was mushy which kind of threw it off.

Yelp
What a great breakfast. White glove service at standard diner prices. Portions were huge and the space, a half-basement in a historic-looking apartment building is really charming. We loved everything about our breakfast here.

Rex S.

Yelp
A Mouse Came Out Of The Kitchen!!! Appalling, disgusting and terrible service. If they don't care about their kitchen, they don't care about their customers and our health.

Yelp
What a great find We were in town to drop off some things for our son and got a street reference from some folks we met. Oh wow. We were welcomed, seated and started w v c ups of soup; Potato Leak and Clam Cowder. Creamy and so flavorful. The croutons served w the soup were delightful Sandwiches looked like a magazine photo food spread and were amazing

Yelp
We were looking for a last minute brunch spot as travelers to Chicago and found this spot through google and it was such a great place! It had a cozy pub like atmosphere. The tables were close but it wasn't obnoxiously loud. Our server was super friendly, I wish I remembered her name! The food was delcious! I had the BLT with fruit, my wife had the french toast and we shared a scone. Probably the best scone I've ever had!

Yelp
For me and my family, 3rd Coast Cafe is a NO! The location is great because it's a few blocks from my house. The atmosphere is quaint, quiet and has an upscale feel to it. The food was horrible. I ordered the pulled pork hash. I imagined it would be more along the lines of corned beef hash. I didn't think it would be pork and onions inside of hardened hash browns with 2 slices of cheese on top. Especially priced at $18. I took one bite and sent it back. My husband had pancakes, sausage and ham. He ate the meat and took his pancakes to go but ended up tossing them before we got home. He says they were too hard. My kids had pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon. The bacon was overcooked. 1 of my kids didn't like the eggs. The service was fine. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating. She offered me the menu so I could choose another item but nothing else was appetizing to me so I ate nothing. I can not recommend this place and we will not be returning.

Yelp
MASTER OF SIMPLICITY. The food here really is so good. The portions are enough to keep you full and satisfied. I've only gotten 2 sandwiches from here but by far they have been the best sandwiches I've had in the midwest. Coronation chicken is a must try. This cafe's vibes are so cozy and old school, it's like you are back in time. On top of that the waitresses here are so sweet, it seems to make the food taste better.

Yelp
This is the first place I visited since my hotel didn't have breakfast and it was only a couple of blocks away. We tried the breakfast tacos, chocolate chip scone, pulled pork hash, farmers omelet, coffee and fresh OJ. A couple things about the menu I noticed immediately was the price of their root beer and the word "toast". It's basically a soda and comes in a can....its just A&W.., but why the heck are they charging 3.25 when a coke is 2.50 and also comes in a can. Secondly, when you see that an entree comes with toast on the menu, they mean a bread to be toasted, and you get to choose which bread you want....not actual slices of toasted bread, like most other restaurants in the US. Overall, the food was good, service was excellent, place was homey, and I would return if I was ever in the area again.

Yelp
Awesome spot that I didn't even know existed! We showed up at 10am and there was already a huge line. It moved fast tho. Food was excellent and it gave off homey vibes. I got the stuffed french toast as well as a bloody mary and espresso. All was so good. Will definitely be back

Yelp
This is my 2nd time going to 3rd Coast Cafe for brunch. Both times I have thought everything about it was very mediocre. I've tried some sort of egg dish each time (farmers omelette this time) and both times it's just okay? Like it tasted fresh enough, but the hash browns were really lack luster & the omelette had barely any cheese. Service is nice, but extremely slow. It took almost an hour to get two omelettes? It's in the basement of an apartment building & I know it's somewhat of an institution, but after giving it two tries, I don't see myself returning. Chicago has so many good places, why go somewhere mediocre?
google avatar

Stephen G.

Yelp
Came for a coffee but hear the apple pie was pretty good. It was. Not really high but it was very tasty
google avatar

Audrey A.

Yelp
Service was ok. My dirty chai was great. The stuffed French toast was large and in charge!!

Ashley M.

Yelp
The food and service is 10/10. Came in on Saturday evening. Ambiance is really nice and quiet for an intimate setting. Ordered the 3rd Coast burger and apple pie. Super fresh and delicious. The service was great too. The team members are really hospitable, professional and respectful. Def coming back again!
google avatar

Susie M.

Yelp
Their portions are very generous, and overall not bad. I would say that the tables are a little bit close to each other so I couldn't really hear the people across the table from me. I honestly wouldn't feel crazy about coming back. Because of the rush, it took us quite a long time to ask for our check as well. There's also a farmers market nearby if you wanna walk around to digest! TLDR: decent food, very loud inside, good location!
google avatar

Liz P.

Yelp
Super yummy food and breakfast all day. I had the breakfast burrito with no meat and really enjoyed it. It came with 2 sauces on the side that were good too. all was missing was those little yellow chilis. One of my kids ordered a cheese pizza. Pizza had amazing sauce and super cheesy. Other kid order chocolate chip pancakes with hash browns. She said pancakes were really good. Hash browns were over cooked.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
Solid neighborhood diner. Fresh food, great service. Blueberry pancakes FULL of blueberries!

Mary J.

Yelp
This is an awesome local place - wide selection, daily specials and reasonable prices. The salads, pizzas and sandwiches are great as are the evening entrees.
google avatar

Heyward T.

Yelp
Really good cuisine here at a fair price! Everything was very fresh, and pick-up service was rapid. The Mexican Steak & Eggs and Farmers Omelet was my favorite dish since it had a lot of flavor and was served in a big size. Every time we visit, my wife orders the chicken salad sandwich because she loves it there. Always a positive experience all around!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
The 3rd Coast Cafe is a classic diner breakfast. So depending on how you feel about diner breakfasts -- maybe you should or should not try it here. I think the food is always good, nothing amazing, and it is consistent. Our waiter is also always friendly but sometimes it can be a little hard to get a check. Also this place is packed on the weekends! I've never had to wait for a table luckily, but be aware that in the upper dining room on busy weekend days they pack you in like absolute sardines. If you sit down along the wall, good luck getting up during your meal!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
My dad frequented this establishment since he was young. I came for the first time and got the ghost burger. It was pretty solid! My dad said this place hasn't changed since he last came. Overall, would recommend for solid food and good service.

Edgar B.

Yelp
We had a good experience there. The server was friendly and quite good. We enjoyed speaking with her. We had no wait time to be seated by the host. My wife had an almond crossiant and she thought it was very good. I had a breakfast sandwich, which was also good. I ordered a banana, and there was a mixup, and it did not arrive with the rest of our food. I had to ask where my banana was. The restaurant interior needed to be updated because there was evidence of wear and tear on the furniture.
google avatar

Velina M.

Yelp
This is my third time here and it's great. It's conveniently located 5 min away from my apartment. This time I went on Sunday and oh boy was it loud..! We had to wait for table for a few minutes but nothing too outrageous. My sis got the short stack buttermilk pancakes. She gave them 4/5 because the chocolate chip tasted like dark chocolate. I would have loved it haha. She also got the hot chocolate and loved it; a total sugar bomb. I was feeling in the mood for an omelette so I got the Farmer's omelette with wheat toast and hashbrowns. Great volume of food as I ended up having leftovers to snack later. The omelette itself was a little bland which I fixed with the hot sauce. I would definitely like some stronger flavor. Overall, a very solid spot and we would go there again! I want to try the eggs Benedict next.

Yelp
This is a great little restaurant that is a bit "under the radar." I've visited here twice while visiting my daughter in Chicago. Breakfast was delicious, service was excellent, and prices were very reasonable, especially for the area. The restaurant was very busy, and we had to wait a bit for a table, but it was definitely worth it. Lunch is also great. We ventured in around 2pm, and it wasn't very crowded. We had a nice lunch (both had burgers) and were able to spend some time talking and visiting. Definitely give this place a try if you're in the Gold Coast area!

Steven A.

Yelp
We enjoyed a quiet and tasty dinner in the comfortable atmosphere of 3rd Coast Cafe. The service was spot on and the food came out without delay. We will certainly return for another meal soon.
google avatar

Seth M.

Yelp
Overall good experience at 3rd Coast Cafe. Fast service, high quality food, cool ambiance. A bit noisy and of course pricey. Would recommend.

Hope L.

Yelp
The wait staff was amazing! The food was pretty traditional breakfast food but the scones were AMAZING! Great vibe inside with some chill old people
google avatar

Ali M.

Yelp
Great diner style restaurant. Be prepared to wait though as they don't take reservations or call off a waitlist. The food was fresh and portions were big and if you've got the time it's definitely worth it. Highly recommend the brisket hash!
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
I have been here before, and this time, as usual, the food and great service were excellent. It was 1:00 and they gave us the brunch menu, which was fine. I ordered the Mexican Omlete and she had an egg sandwich. We both loved our choices. She ordered coffee which was diligently refilled when the cup was close to being empty. I had an Irish Coffee which went down well. The ambiance was wonderful, but it was crowded because of its popularity. I recommend the place for anything from coffee (or something harder) to a meal.
google avatar

Kiaya S.

Yelp
Truly loved the food here! The service was fine given how busy it was but the food was the true star! The ambiance was that of a classic diner type restaurant and the food was classic which made it good !
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
Came here on a Sunday morning. What I liked: no wait at noon at all! So refreshing for a place in the city. Place is cute, quaint. What I didn't like: food was just okay. The Bloody Mary had a lot to be desired, lacked spice, was watered down, toppings were eh. I felt rushed by the waitress. Of course in the area parking is hard to find so just be aware. All in all- I wouldn't come back just for the food but I would go back if I happen to be in the neighborhood or had plans there afterwards
google avatar

Ojus P.

Yelp
There's a homey vibe but all of the food felt reasonably standard. 3rd Coast Scone - 4/5. Quite tasty with raspberry, but overly large means it wasn't as crisped up at the end as it could be if it was served as 2 smaller scones. Coconut Oatmeal - 3.5/5. Simple and clean if you're looking for something easy on the stomach. My wife liked it more than I did. Veggie Hash - 3/5. Appreciate that the server warned me to get sunny side up because they often don't get light poach right. The eggs were nice and runny, but the dish lacked any sort of flare. There was a nice crisp on the potatoes, so this was really an issue of flavor not texture.
google avatar

Victoria W.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast and I love how cozy the atmosphere is at this spot! We got an omelette, the breakfast sandwich with bacon added, the chocolate chip pancakes, fresh squeezed orange juice, and a mocha latte. I really loved both the orange juice and the mocha latte, the mocha latte came in a giant mug with whipped cream on top and it was sweet but not too sweet. The chocolate chip pancakes and the omelette were good as well and pretty standard for a breakfast place. In my opinion the breakfast sandwich wasn't worth the $10 price as the bread to filling ratio seemed to be off. I feel like it would be much better if there was at least a little more egg inside the breakfast sandwich because I was still hungry after eating it, which I wasn't expecting, especially for the price.
google avatar

Yelp
3rd Coast is our local go-to in the area. Have been patrons for so many years. A varied menu, great service and the food is always exactly what we want. Ate here three times over two days last week - don't @ me with "there are so many other places to try." The bowl of chicken soup for dinner was fantastic. Breakfast scones are delicious and shareable. Solid wine list. Food is always served at perfect temperature. If you are there after 4:00 - try a pizza with it's just crunchy/chewy crust and always fresh toppings. Best local place in the Gold Coast.
google avatar

Charlene A.

Yelp
Zero Stars. The service was absolutely horrible. Its located in Gold Coast and there were a lot of white folks around and my bf and i were the only people of color. I get it, can't control who comes in but the service to us versus them was undeniably different. Here's what happened: My boyfriend and I came here for brunch on Sunday and was seated by a nice hostess after 20 minutes of waiting. The place is charming and the food was fine (my partner said his hash was great), but the service was awfullllll. I work in the service industry and know when someone is tired but our server (blonde, blue eyed older lady) didn't greet us, looked displeased-annoyed even, and took 15 minutes to get our order and didn't offer us coffee. The mimosas she placed on our were spilling every where as she sat them down on the table and she didn't clean it up so we used our napkins and i had to wash my hands (again) because my fingers were sticky from the orange juice. After our meal came and we ate, she just brought over the check that we hadn't asked for yet. we're planning to have one more mimosa! I looked around and she was treating other customers friendlier, offering coffee, providing recommendations. I still don't understand why she was so rude to us. Work on your service skills, it's really not that hard to be nice. i fully understand when it's busy but it takes two seconds. don't know if it was racially motivated but it felt like it. i'm never coming here again.
google avatar

Marina H.

Yelp
Lovely food and service Quaint environment for any occasion The omelettes are the best!
google avatar

Janine A.

Yelp
The Pomodoro and chèvre plate is to die for! The house glass of wine tasted like boxed wine.

R F.

Yelp
Cozy place with good food and good service. It's a great place to have a quiet dinner and reconnect with friends over yummy food.
google avatar

Eddie U.

Yelp
I came with my mom for a meal. I brought us here because the breakfast menu is available all day. Having breakfast anytime is always welcome. We ordered and gladly enjoyed the space and company. The staff was super nice and we left our table happy and satisfied.
google avatar

Navapat K.

Yelp
Busy restaurant! We got so lucky to get seated right away! Servers were friendly! Our food came pretty quick with big portion! We love our food here. I got stuffed french toast with sourdough, it came with banana and walnuts. My husband got Polish sausage with egg and hash brown. Good spot for brunch and good price in the nice neighborhood!
google avatar

Emory B.

Yelp
Great food, but the service was lacking. Felt rushed to order by our server and was only approached again when she was dropping off the check. Definitely recommend the coronation chicken salad sandwich and the chicken soup. Come for great food, but don't expect amazing service.
google avatar

Olivia C.

Yelp
I nearly missed 3rd Coast Cafe as it's in a very unassuming location, especially compared to other brunch/breakfast places in the Gold Coast area. It has a quaint and cozy interior, and I'm surprised it's not more popular! Solid American breakfast with a wide variety of options and great bakery items. I enjoyed my Farmers Omelet and heard great things about the Pulled Pork Hash from my friends. The blueberry scone was also delicious, and I'd come back just to try some of their other baked goods! The service was wonderful as well- the food came out quickly and they were so nice about a mix-up with one of my side orders.
google avatar

Paul K.

Yelp
Great all around food from breakfast to dinner. Burgers, sandwiches and omelettes standout. Friendly service with a great location and friendly service.
google avatar

Constance M.

Yelp
I ate here this morning and I just thought it was ok. I ordered the Greek omelette with feta, tomatoes, spinach and olives. I thought it could have used a little more cheese. I also ordered "crispy" hash browns and the top part was the only crispy part. The butter for the bread was hard and very hard to spread; but the rye bread itself was pretty tasty. Great decor & service.

Emma L.

Yelp
Updating to 5 stars because the 3rd Coast Cafe deserves it! This is a Gold Coast gem.
google avatar

Nisa J.

Yelp
While the food is excellent (especially the veggie hash), and the kitchen staff is great, the front of house staff generally are not friendly and most are not family forward. They make it feel like a nuisance when we ask for a high chair, and there is a sense of irritation towards little kids. Won't be coming back given that environment.
google avatar

Nikki T.

Yelp
The ambiance was very vibrant. The food and service were spectacular!! Really great food and coffee!! Thank
google avatar

Karen V.

Yelp
A local own restaurant located in a very cozy neighborhood. The ambiance of this restaurant makes it great for either brunch or dinner. I think it is great for groups and a good date spot because the ambiance itself is relaxed to have a conversation and the location itself is nice for strolling for walk. I really liked my hamburger with hash browns and my sparkling wine ~ i know it is a weird personal combo but I am keeping it classy lol ~ The staff is friendly and although it got busy at times I was very surprised how they still managed to keep their tables checked and the bar tenders where stepping in whenever they saw need it ! Respects to that teamwork!
google avatar

Jess L.

Yelp
SUPER cute and classic breakfast cafe. Long lines on weekend but worth it. Good food and cozy-homey sunday morning vibes.
google avatar

Morgan P.

Yelp
easy to miss and hard to forget delicious food and great service. they were fully packed on a sunday but fast turnover so we only had a 15 min wait so don't be discouraged if you see a long line it moves quickly. food was filling and the bloody mary was spicy so be careful if you don't like spicy. the breakfast sandwhich with sausage was filling and better with hot sauce so make sure to ask for that.
