Here's the breakdown -
A neighborhood gem in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, 44 & x has been around a while. An upscale, American restaurant, they pride themselves on "reinventing American classics," and to that, their menu is solid whether you come for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Price points are higher than average, and the service and food are aligned with the price point so the value is present.
On a recent visit, we sat outside for dinner and brought out-of-town family with us. With impeccable service, we ordered a few drinks, appetizers, dinner, and dessert. The "Tequila for Elephants" cocktail, a blood orange-grapefruit margarita was a favorite, and the mezcal-mango based "Smokewood" cocktail was also good too. They also have a solid wine list.
For an appetizer, we got the goat cheese and pistachio soufflé , made well and with balanced flavors, we practically licked the plate clean. (Okay, not really)
For entrees, we really enjoyed the ancho chili rubbed pork tenderloin and the sautéed halibut, which was served with vegetables in a medeira emulsion.
The fallen chocolate soufflé dessert was the perfect ending to the meal , satisfying that want for a little sweetness balanced out with a Tahitian vanilla gelato.
Presentation of tableware, service points, and food were all great, too, however, the overall restaurant could use a little love as it's dated and showing its age for such an upscale and elegant place. If they were to invest in the space as much as they invest into the food and service, it would easily be a 5 star experience.
