The Best Wine Bars in Portland

"While it’s primarily a wine shop, this spacious store in St. Johns doubles as a small wine bar for in-person imbibing of by-the-glass pours or full bottles. There’s a strong emphasis on Oregon wines, as well as a good selection of imports, mainly from Europe. With a friendly owner and a relaxed environment, it’s a popular haunt for residents of St. Johns, and worth the trip for those outside the neighborhood." - Zoe Baillargeon, Alex Frane

We're so lucky to have 45th Parallel within walking distance of our home. Not only can we try new wines, we've had the chance to meet other locals, helping us feel at home in our new community.

Loooove this spot! If you want really good wine in a chill setting or need to grab a bottle, this is your place! We were lucky enough to chat with the owner, Matt. He was so kind and gave amazing recommendations for our wines. We will absolutely be coming back, and next time we will bring our son. He let us know that they are kid friendly, and that means a lot to us. Basically, you should totally come and support Matt and his team, while having some REALLY good wine.

Matt & Shannon (owners) are amazing. They are super knowledgeable about their wines and are always down to have a friendly chat about the wines or what's going on in the neighborhood. Their selection is fantastic, always interesting, and very reasonably priced. Plus: beer, snacks and other treats! Don't miss this spot if you are up in St. John's - there's a reason they were featured as one of the best neighborhood wine shop by Wine Enthusiast.

My favorite wine bar in Portland! Every time I go, I have an amazing experience. The wines they offer are thoughtfully selected from across the globe. Matt, the owner, is very knowledgeable and always helps me to choose a wine when I come to visit his bar. The staff is very friendly, the space is clean, and the general vibe is community-oriented. In my opinion, this is one of the best businesses in St Johns, and we're lucky to have Matt and his team!

Google
Part of the wine club; nice to get two interesting and unique wines without breaking the bank. Have ordered through Matt many times and he has been great through each process. In store selection is OK but sky is the limit for ordering.

Google
So many wonderful things about St. Johns gem of a wine shop. Friendly, helpful and an excellent range of options. I picked up a delicious bottle of red ($13) and a more expensive bottle as well. I explained what I was looking for and five minutes later left with a smile and wonderful wine to explore. Thanks, Matt!

Google
Wonderful rotating selection of reds, whites and a few beers. Worth the trip. Expertise and a generous pour! Hang out at the bar and snack on cheese (or bring some of Dubs wonderful BBQ in from next door). If you need a quick recommendation they won't steer you wrong if you need to grab a bottle to go.

Google
Always happy to see a bottle shop that highlights local wines and small-batch bottles. I talked to Matt, one of the owners, and am pleased to find that not only is he well informed about the wines he sells, but he's clearly passionate about what he does. Excited to go back soon!

Yelp
The service and recommendations are always helpful! Really kind folks who don't mind a newbie asking a lot of questions! They also have a great little selection of snacks, sometimes live music, what's not to like? It's a fabulous little wine shop!

Yelp
Wonderful staff, very cozy atmosphere. Staff won't hesitate to make recommendations based on what they tried, which is the only way I like to try new wine. Plus they host tastings and have a bar out of which they can serve anything in their showroom. I visited on their 8 year anniversary so everyone was in good spirits and they even stayed open extra late to honor their regular customers. This is my favorite kind of business, one that is a staple in the community. I will definitely make this place a frequent visit.

Yelp
Really nice people working there, and good selection of wines. They are the only store in Portland that has my favorite wine, I drive all the way out just to buy it :)

Yelp
At the heart of downtown St. Johns across the plaza. Great place to try local and import wine, try a new seasonal beer, and explore some risqué wines. Great selection of wines with many different price points. Sit at the bar and chat with the personable bartender or sit outside and people watch.

Yelp
This is a great wine shop, bottle shop, and bar. I got the chance to sit and have a few beers this afternoon talking with the owner, Matt. He's a great guy who really knows his stuff. If you're looking to pick up a bottle after work to have w/ dinner, or looking to sit and have a glass of wine or a great on-tap beer at a lovely spot in downtown St. Johns, this is the spot for you.

Yelp
This guy talks to wine. Nothing in that shop is mediocre. Prices are fair and always greeted with a smile and a high five! Every single time I buy something that this shop owner suggests, it ends up being a favorite! Thanks for always pointing me in the right direction and can't wait to go back!

Yelp
We went here on one of the St. Johns "Night On The Town" evenings to get all of our wines for the Thanksgiving holiday. There were two patrons sitting at the bar and two others sitting at a table by the front window - that's all. And yet, when we walked in, the two employees behind the bar didn't greet us or even make eye contact. We walked around, looking at the various wines, and neither of the employees asked us if we had questions or wanted a recommendation. The least expensive bottle of wine we saw was $14.99 and the average was around $30. $15 won't break the bank, but it would've been nice to see some $10 or less bottles available. After milling about for a few more minutes and still not being acknowledged by the staff, we decided to bugger off. My husband and I don't look like much, but we make good money and we like to drink. We would've loved to spend $150 on wine (like we used to do at Barrique Barrel, St. Johns's previous wine shop), but we instead gave that money to New Seasons where we knew we could get inexpensive, delicious wines and helpful service. Will not be going back to this wine shop.

Yelp
We are so lucky to have this amazing shop in St Johns! Matt really knows his stuff, and he CARES about where and who he sources his products from. The wine selection is so thoughtful, and covers such a range of varietals and prices. He also has a small but awesome specialty foods selection, as well as some craft beer and ciders. I love that you can sit and have a glass from the rotating selection, it's a friendly neighborly vibe at the bar. You're also able to buy snacks from the case and have your own charcuterie while you sip! Next on my agenda is to join their wine club, I've only heard great things.

Yelp
One of the best additions to St Johns in the last 5 years. Great owners with an extensive knowledge of wines. They lean towards local wines (and why not, we have have some amazing ones) but also they bring in interesting wines from around the world as well. Super casual place, grab a bottle and maybe some cheese from the cooler and relax. I've never felt rushed here.

Yelp
I love this place. Matt and Shannon are great, the wines are delish and the momentum is gaining, so seems to be busier every time I'm there. St. Johns really needed a chill place like this to grab a glass with a friend or a bottle to go. Thank you!

Yelp
Great selection, fun atmosphere, and of course tasty wines. Stop in. Have a glass of wine, or buy a bottle, or do both!

Yelp
Stopped in on a whim and met Matt. He's so awesome. Helped us pick out a nice bottle of rosé and then, the cherry on top, popped a bottle of sparking for a birthday celebration! There is a super great selection, great attention to detail, and nice pricing. Come in while you're in St. John's, you don't want to miss out!

Yelp
Wonderful place! They are very knowledgeable and want to share what they know about their wines. The owners really care about their customers.

Yelp
My partner and I moved into the St John's area a few years back (I grew up in and around St John's), and it's been great seeing this wine shop grow. They offer a great selection of wines, by the bottle to-go, corked in the shop or by the glass; they really know their grapes! In addition to wine, they also have a selection of beers to choose from. Matt and Shannon also are great with customer service, and work hard to make you feel like a part of their family. I'm grateful they are in this community and am looking forward to many more years spent enjoying wine and beer here.

Yelp
Great addition to the neighborhood! Got a bottle to go but will definitely be back for a tasting. The space is spacious and modern, staff is super friendly.

Yelp
This wine shop is a local gem. Matt is the wine guy who genuinely loves learning what you love to drink and will pour you the perfect glass. Shannon, his wife, is super kind and supportive of all wine (and beer) drinking endeavors. It's a friendly environment and a sweet spot to drink some good wine. If you're hungry, bring your own food or get takeout down the road. They welcome outside food as they don't have a kitchen. They also have some cheese and charcuterie for sale inside. All in all I'm a fan and will consider myself a regular!

Yelp
This spot is an amazing addition to St John's! Great space with a great vibe, amazing wines and a few quality beers on tap. Matt really knows his wines and loves making sure you get a wine that scratches your itch. After my partner and I went in the first time we became instant regulars. Matt now knows our tastes and always leads us to the right bottles to take home or pours us the glass that's always right! If you're a long time St Johnian or new to the hood, get in there! You'll love it.

Yelp
The owner, Matt, is incredibly knowledgeable about wine in general and particularly the wines of the Pacific Northwest. Matt makes an effort to carry the best wines in every price range. The majority of this shop's inventory consists of reasonably priced wines (about $20) that taste way above their price points. I am so happy that this place is in the neighborhood, and I highly recommend them as a place to either buy a bottle or sit and have a glass -- or both !

Julia N.

Yelp
Matt is knowledgeable and always willing to help, making good wine feel approachable and exciting. Such a great addition to the neighborhood!
