The 36 Best Restaurants in Des Moines, Iowa | Eater

"This bakery and deli is inspired by the bagel shops of New York City, where owners Toney and Sarah Chem met. The sandwiches are named for the city’s boroughs and various landmarks, served alongside espresso drinks, teas, and fresh-squeezed juices. If you’re not feeling a classic fresh-baked lox deluxe bagel, try the Bronx sandwich, essentially a BLT with Sriracha cream cheese and banana peppers. You can also find bagels, bialys, and blended cream cheeses (try the Sriracha-bacon) at the location in Urbandale." - Karla Walsh

I ordered a few bagels to go, got them toasted and packed only to be surprised that they are very bad and does not look like a bagel. I found a black plastic like thing in everything bagel (refer the image ) and bagel is so skinny and flat and looks so weird. I cannot believe the quality of this branch has gone down so much which was the only go to store for bagels in DSM area. This is not the first time, we’ve been consistently disappointed with the quality of bagels here. Everytime I make a to-go order, the bagels they give are the weird ones. All images attached. PS - I love local food and been a customer for over 3 years.

This bowl cost me over $16, and I was shocked how small the portion was. I did get a refund upon returning to complain about this order, but this truly is one of the biggest rip offs of a food item I’ve purchased before. This was supposed to be extra egg white, and there was a very small portion underneath the hash browns. Aside from bagels, portion sizes including coffee seem very overpriced for what is given. I’ve supported this local place for quite some time, but experiences like this are making it extremely difficult.

Google
Delicious bagel sandwiches and coffee! They’ve got a great variety of cream cheeses to choose from, and also a variety of sandwiches! We got breakfast sandwiches and some coffee- all quite good! My family and I will definitely be back!

Pastrami on a Cheddar Cheese Bagel has an exquisite taste when topped with fresh ingredients from 5 Boroughs. The toasted bagel exudes flavor and deliciousness as the cream cheese floats through the layered pieces of pastrami that checks all the boxes of satisfying my quick lunch hunger.

Craving some bread so impulsive stop on a Tuesday morning around 9:30. Patio full of diners. One couple ahead of me in line who had apparently never ordered food. Or seen a bagel. Or been in public before. Any hoo- the wait was LONG! Not any fault of the staff however. They have a dozen or more different kinds of bagels and cream cheese. Can order by singles, half dozens, or dozens. Breakfast and lunch menu available. Many kinds of coffees with many add ins for different flavors. Bottled water and canned pop. I had a century to look at the menu and observe the workers. They were on it! 2 people filling orders and one person taking orders. Moving at a good pace. Obviously working on to go and call ahead items. Nice clean space with a few tables and a couple of high tops for seating. I didn't notice if there was a restroom. My turn and I ordered a gluten free bagel with veggie cream cheese. Ready in about 2 minutes. Wrapped up nice in foil which was a bonus as I couldn't consume it until I got home 20 minutes later. The cream cheese was spectacular. The bagel was either a day past its prime or I didn't like their gluten free version. Bill was $7 so no complaints. Have had breakfast sandwiches from here that were tasty in the past. Definitely will go again and get a nice wheat filled carby bagel with extra cream cheese.

Whenever I'm in the area for an extended stay I make a point of stopping by here for breakfast/lunch at least once or twice. They have a wide selection of bagels (garlic, poppyseed, pepperjack, bailey etc) with a great and wide selection of meat, veg and cream cheese fillings and the staff are generally willing to accommodate bespoke requests without much trouble. Their lunch menu is well priced and well put together for the most part, their lunch-time pastrami bagel is positively huge and one of my absolute favourites when I'm looking for something heavier to enjoy. I personally like it with extra mustard and no cream cheese, but there are also lots of light and calorie conscious options as well. My only real complaint is their lighter prepared bagels are priced very high compared to their larger and more filling ones. It's hard sometimes not to feel like I'm getting a poor value buying one of their vegetables oriented bagels compared to their heavier meat ones. They are cheaper but not by much. I also think this type of establishment would benefit greatly from clearly listing their calorie and nutritional information on their menu or website. It's very helpful for people looking to make informed decisions about what they eat. It can be very difficult to guess otherwise.

Stopped here for a morning coffee and snack in between appointments. Cute set-up. Wasn't expecting that in a strip mall. The coffee was good. I got my latté with half the syrup and that was more than enough. My partner got a Red-Eye and it was good and robust. The staff recommended the honey and walnut cream cheese so I got that on a plain bagel. It was everything I didn't know I wanted! So good! I don't typically go for sweet cream cheese but this one changed my mind. It was fluffy, not overly sweet, and with just enough crunch as it was not inundated with nuts. They were super busy this Sunday morning but you could hear them effectively communicate with each other to make sure everyone was attended to. Great place! Wish I would've stopped here sooner! I'm looking forward to trying their bagel sandwiches next time. There's one that plays on a Vietnamese Banh Mi that I'm curious about.

Google
We will be returning to this bagel shop! Hands down one of my favorite places to get breakfast. Their cream cheese is delicious and comes in a variety of unique flavors. Fun seating, great staff, delicious food. What more could you ask for. If you’re in the DSM area, check it out!

Yelp
Updated review - 5/5 We are now regular customers of 5 Borough and absolutely love it. Their bagels are fantastic and they sell at one of the local coffee shops too. Breakfast sandwich's are amazing and loaded with cream cheese! The eggs are perfect I've had iced coffee a few more times and the lids still leak, but I just take the lid off and it's fine. Support this local business at their many locations! They have an app now to order ahead and it's easy to use.

Yelp
Delightful experience! Firstly, super fast delivery of food. Absolutely love the consistency of traveling to every one of these locations! Secondly, service was so great! Everyone was super kind - I wanted a vanilla Carmel drink and the barista was accommodating mixing me up my own concoctions. Truly love visiting and the husband couldn't stop swooning over the lemonade. We love eating here for breakfast stops as this means non-greasy foods and fast delivery.

Yelp
Sorry I had to do a 2nd Review I wasn't able to eat both halves of my Cinnamon/Raisin w/Honey Walnut Cream Cheese yesterday cause of my busy day So I put in fridge when I got home I just ate second 1/2 and I think I enjoyed it even more than I did yesterday GRRRRRRRREAT JOB

Yelp
I've been going to 5 Borough for a while. Their Pepper Jack bagel is very good! Also they give you tons of Cream Cheese. I will say their Breakfast bagels are better than their lunch bagels.

Yelp
Wow! This place gets busy on Saturday morning! I did see lots of takeout orders and there is outdoor seating. All were happy with their bagels, cream cheese, and breakfast sandwiches. The coffee is good too- guessing a medium blend.

Yelp
Placing an order for a fresh pepper jack bagel with turkey, cream cheese and spinach was quick, tasteful and well garnished with fresh veggies. As you enter you are welcomed with a cheerful "May I help you?" The small serving area has a few tables for a quick sit down breakfast or lunch order in a clean and pleasant surrounding. Parking is tight, but the prices are reasonable for the portion of trimmings placed on the bagel. A good stop for a simple and no fuss meal.

Yelp
The fluffiest bagel I've had in a long time!! So many options. The cream cheese were flavored packed and fresh. 10/10

Yelp
I got a sausage egg and cheese bagel sandwich and it was pretty mid. It was okay but far from anything to write home about. Bagels tasted like just your middle of the road store bought bagels and it would've been pretty easy to make a better sandwich at home.

Elena D.

Yelp
Plain bagel with NY Cheesecake was fabulous! The sausage egg and cheese was ok not much spice to the sausage! Cute cocoa drink.

Mary H.

Yelp
We love the bagels and sandwiches. We don't think you'll be disappointed. Friendly employees;

Shelby B.

Yelp
The best bagels and bagel sandwiches in the DSM metro! Love the selection of cream cheese.

Yelp
Yup, I'm being super extra with my fave Bagel shop's new sandwich! Looove the new "Chawn-Mi" sandwich with their own special "Sarinade" marinade on the pork and pickled veggies among other deliciousness in it. The only thing missing for me was jalapeños which I remedied myself with some fresh sliced ones stuffed inside. The kiddos still love the blueberry bagels (sadly they ran out of the French Toast ones) but paired with their blueberry, strawberry or veggie cream cheese is the bestttt breakfast, lunch, brunch sandwich. Go get you some! But go tomorrow cause they closed at 2pm. btw their coffee and water mugs/tumblers/bottles ! I was able to add to my fave 5 Borough Bagels tumbler collection today! Thank you Toney & Sarah! Can't wait for the new location which will be closer to us! P.S. please keep the Chawn Mi on the menu!!

Yelp
Terrible. Casey's gas stations have better coffee than this! I got an Americano and the wife got a coffee with cream at the store in the JCP Mall. Hers was barely like warm and mine was hot and very weak. They filled the cup up to the very edge causing it to be watered down. The customer service was abhorrent when my wife walked back in to ask about a hotter coffee. The employee rolled his eyes at her and audibly sighed at the inconvenience of her request. He plopped the fresh cup on the counter with no cream so she asked for cream. This seemed as painful and annoying to him as the first request, and reulted with him plopping down a small open cup of creamer for her. No apologies for the crap coffee or service, just rudeness. This place has zero ambience and even less with the low-level personality on display.

Yelp
Vibe- I have to get a bagel from this spot whenever I'm in town visiting my boyfriend! There's plenty of seating outside and a good amount inside. I really like the green velvet seats! Customer service- Great! I did an order over the phone and it was ready to go when I got there. Food/drinks- I got the French toast bagel with the honey walnut cream cheese, yum! I love that they are not stingy at all with the cream cheese!!! You could literally get another bagel and spread it with the excess cream cheese from your bagel you ordered. *They do also have some vegan cream cheese options; I did try the tofu maple walnut on my last visit and was NOT a fan at all :( Parking- Its located in a shopping center so there's plenty of spaces to park.

Yelp
I asked Google for a breakfast recommendation this morning and this is where we ended up going, as it was #1 on the list that came up. We hadn't had bagels for a while so thought it sounded good. The building is a little hidden and isn't directly accessible from University. From the outside it doesn't look like anything special (see pictures) but once you get inside it is impressive (see pictures). I was looking for something with a little spice, so the last at the counter recommended the Bronx (see pictures). It was delicious and a good balance of a little spice kick along with the bacon, lettuce and tomato...and a creamy spread. They also have a great choice selection with a lot of flavored syrups to choose from. This is a great stop for a morning sandwich. Yelp
Jordan creek... to add cream cheese to a bagel is $2.60. Their cinnAmon bagel is flavorless without the cream cheese.

Bethany E.

Yelp
Waited 30 minutes for a lox deluxe bagel. It's such a cramped space that you get your bagel on the pickup order side, and you have to weasel through all the people in line backwards to get to the drink side, and then to leave you have to go back through all of the people to get out. It took a lot of time and the space is very inefficient. Would not recommend these obstacles for a bagel that is subpar at best. Only 1 slice of salmon on a lox bagel won't do. Let this be a warning to people who want to save time. I saw 4 groups walk in, see the line, and walk straight out.

Yelp
All orders are set up as to-go. We ordered a bagel sandwich and a breakfast bowl planning to sit and eat. The meal came out in plastic bowl and wrapped sandwich in a paper sack. Every thing is throw away and not in compostable containers. I asked for hot sauce and it came in a packet! Hot sauce in a packet! There was not enough hot sauce to add flavor to the breakfast bowl, and I tried. Tables were previously sat at and not wiped off. Not the cleanest place and there was staff walking around, they were not short staff by any means. Staff didn't really interact with customers- more within themselves and talking and joking loudly behind the counter. Been there done that. Next.

Yelp
I'm not going to try not to bore you all with a lot of details today. I'm just going to say if you like a good pastrami sandwich, and you haven't grabbed a Hot Pastrami on an Everything bagel ( $8.95) at 5 Borough Bagels... You're really missing out. The Hot Pastrami used to be a limited availability item... I noticed it posted over on their Facebook page and had to make a stop by on lunch today to give it a try. Nestled in the same strip mall as Club Car 5 Borough Bagels is a cozy order and pay at the counter type of place. The seating and atmosphere inside gives it a very comfortable feel. With the Everything bagel, the pastrami itself, the mustard, and the pickles... The included cheese is kind of overshadowed, but I still noticed the slight texture change-up of the cheese in a bite. This little sandwich is a huge explosion of flavor. If breakfast is more your thing.... Check out The Empire. Good stuff. And Toney and Sarah are great people.

Raphael B.

Yelp
A $5 bagel is a crime, but the smooth criminal that makes this scallion blended cream cheese can get away with it. Creamy af with that good punch is something I wanna shovel into my mouth by the spoonful. However, my gf is telling me to watch my weight. Cool place, nice people. Chill spot selling good bagels.

Michelle H.

Yelp
A pretty good bagel. I was in the mood for a lox sandwich and this one hit the spot. Pleasant surprised by the cucumber dill schmear. Shop was on the smaller side and packed but there were still plenty of seats inside and outside. Our only real complaint was my husband's disappointment that they don't have onion bagels. That and no Rye or Pumpernickel that I saw, but maybe we're just too traditional. The texture and taste of the bagels were good. The schmear and plain cream cheese was a bit salty. Still a good place and the coffee was good and fresh full bodied. Just added a star! Thanks Sara for the reply to my post. That attention to detail really counts for a lot and speaks great things to your customer service. Thanks again.

Yelp
I know, I know when you see the word bagel in the name you think O nothing fancy. You couldn't be more wrong!! My eyes were opened to a whole new world of bagels! Their not just for breakfast. So many varieties of flavor, cream cheeses, gluten free, vegan, etc!! There were also so many different varieties of hot and cold drinks. The breakfast sandwiches looked amazing but it was mid-afternoon. My daughter had been wanting to try this place and definitely not disappointed! I wish there was more room though, especially seating options as very crowded when in line ordering or waiting. Would highly suggest to plan on grab and go for this place. Also plan on either having leftovers or a big appetite as the bagels are enormous!

Yelp
Oh 5 borough, y'all have my heart. I didn't realize the impact of a good bagel till you. My mornings are always off to a great start whenever I order from here. Normally I order online for pickup because I don't like waiting in lines. Sometimes this place gets pretty busy and it is a small location. Anyway their online ordering is so incredibly easy once you get going. I like a simple bagel with a cream cheese of my choosing, but I gotta say. The Staten Island is a surprising favorite of mine also. It doesn't look as pretty but the sour of the pickle with the cucumber dill is a combo that I savor. I also especially enjoy their coffee here, you can get milk alternatives such as oat milk.
google avatar

Natalie K.

Yelp
This is our classic hangover food on the weekends. I do recommend going early because it gets pretty busy. The shop itself is extremely well decorated on the inside but is very cramped to actually eat in. Luckily the line always moves fast and it doesn't take long to eat if you want to sit down for a bit. I always get the egg and cheese with a little sriracha bacon cream cheese on an asiago bagel (or cheddar if they are out). They recently switched up their eggs so the sandwiches hold together better. I do recommend asking for light cream cheese all the time because it can definitely overpower the sandwich (unless you love cream cheese ofc). I haven't had their lunch items but would definitely go try sometime. I also am not a huge fan of their coffee but they do have fresh squeezed OJ which is awesome if you like OJ!

Melanie B.

Yelp
Best breakfast we've had during our stay in Des Moines. The bagels are out of this world. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. The cream cheese we could eat by the gallon it was so good!! Also had the breakfast bowl which was huge!
google avatar

Yelp
Guys if anyone has tried New York bagels and is craving them while being in the Midwest PLEASE GO HERE. As a true New Yorker I can honestly say this hits home. They have a variety of coffee lattes and even fresh squeezed orange juice. There hours are 6 am to 2 pm I think so double check before going. Seating is limited so please be prepared to wait for a seat. Service is great and all the workers as super sweet.
google avatar

Debbie F.

Yelp
I had the Asiago Bagel toasted with cream cheese and it was delicious. I also had a vanilla latte that was just okay. It seemed a bit bitter as a result of overheating. The place appeared nice and clean. I will return again.
google avatar

Joseph M.

Yelp
Not bad. I'm split between 3 and 4 stars, but will lean towards 4 stars. The coffee was served at a proper temperature. I ordered a caramel latte and it was nice. The sausage, egg, and cheese bagel was ok. Maybe it's because I was expecting chorizo and avocado, and this place has neither of those ingredients, but I don't think so. The flavors are forgettable and I didn't even finish the sandwich (a rarity for me, I quite love food). Would I come back? Probably, but not before looking for alternative breakfast spots. Note to the staff: If you visit NYC go check out "Rex" on 10th & 57th. This place will give you an idea for how to exceed everyone's breakfast sandwich expectations. This is the quality I would expect from a place called "5 borough...anything"
google avatar

Cass A.

Yelp
Absolutely the best bagels we have had in Iowa. They were so quick to get our order out, and despite the limited seating, someone had left just a few minutes after we ordered. It was fun to enjoy our brunch there on a busy Saturday. We will be returning!!
google avatar

Jordan C.

Yelp
Great food, I would recommend pre ordering instead of walking in as it does take them a longer than usual time to prepare so if ur in a rush be aware of that. But other than that I haven't had a bad thing from them and always order when friends come in town town for a quick brunch surprise
google avatar

Michel S.

Yelp
This place is just amazing for breakfast!! I will start by saying that if you leave hungry, it is your own fault. I have a been here a few times and it is the first time that I am writing a review. In the past I had the basic Bacon , egg and cheese bagel . However, today I decided to get a wild and go with the Empire. The Empire has a little bit of everything and more! Bacon , cheese , egg , cream cheese , sausage, ham. Basically, you have a party in your mouth with every bite. The mix with the cream cheese and the bacon with the cheese. It is something that I really can't explain but it sure is amazing! I also love the fact that they have fresh squeezed orange juice ! It is so good that you want to have another one. You really can taste the freshness and love. Another great thing, it is that you can choose the bagel that you want to eat. Basically, have your bagel and eat it too! Well done! I will be back for sure.

Judy J.

Yelp
Service was slow, order was wrong. Employee was obviously upset when I was annoyed. Waited 20 minutes for 2 dozen bagels to be sliced in half, (they only sliced half of them). The manager said it was my own fault, and I got what I deserved, because they thought I was rude and their negative behavior was appropriate and justified. She also scolds people when they leave a bad review. She tells them they shouldn't say negative things on the review, even if is accurate. I'm spoiled I guess, quick accurate service is what I'm used to.
google avatar

Hailey W.

Yelp
Try to grab a bagel sandwich anytime I'm on this side of town. I love the various cream cheeses and the creative combinations. It's been really cool to see the additions and the items that have been added from when they first opened to know. I don't love the coffee drinks so much. I was super excited to try the gingerbread since the change coffee places don't carry them anymore. It didn't have a lot of the classic flavor and had an odd taste that I couldn't really put my finger in. I'll still to just bagels in the future cause they're always great.
google avatar

Michele I.

Yelp
Atmosphere: Cute little bagel shop offering specialty bagels, cream cheeses, and breakfast/lunch sandwiches and a variety of coffee. Everything seemed very clean and modern. Seating: Low top and high top tables inside, and patio seating outside. Service: Order by counter service and then you wait a few minutes for your order to get made. They also offer bags of fresh bagels for purchase. Parking: Tons of parking outside since it's located in a business strip area.

Jason F.

Yelp
10 stars out of 5. I had the ham, egg and cheese everything bagel with scallion cream cheese and we were all fighting over it at the table. Fresh squeezed OJ was a little pricey but delicious. My wife had the breakfast wrap which was also delicious. We're from out of town just stumbled in because it was close.. great decision. Go if you get the chance.
google avatar

Sarah H.

Yelp
Great bagels and the staff is always super friendly. They definitely do not skimp on the cream cheese!
google avatar

Kat B.

Yelp
I just vacationed in NYC and had the most delicious legit New York bagel and was craving another. So glad that craving was met at 5 Boroughs! Decent sized menu with endless options. I opted for the everything bagel with strawberry cream cheese and my husband did jalapeno cream cheese on everything. The cream cheese was thick and delicious but the bagel was easily the star. It was chewy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect! I also had the coconut macaroon latte and couldn't wait to try it so I absolutely scalded my mouth because it was so hot. I ended up not being able to drink it for about 20 minutes and I'm not even kidding. The lid was off probably 5 or 10 minutes previous to that as well. I will definitely return and maybe try something new, but I doubt it because it was pretty awesome!

Yelp
It's just so nice to have a good true bagel shop in and around Des Moines. I always feel welcomed here and their food is great!

Steve H.

Yelp
Great food, outstanding service. I got the Lox Supreme two days in a row on different bagels and it is fantastic.
google avatar

Darya D.

Yelp
wish we weren't just passing through, otherwise we would have sunk our fat asses into the earth toned, mid-century modern chaises to break our fast. at the register, a staff member revealed that he also draws smiley faces as his e-signature. cute. the single sip of latte i took (before splatting it on the concrete) launched me into bliss so deep that i merely shrugged upon dropping it. the skilled barista remade it without question. the range of customizable coffee options would make indecisive folks sweat profusely. bagels were yummy but didn't mentally catapult me to the "5 boroughs." we chose the scallion schmear from the wide selection of cream cheeses; it was on the sweeter side. could see myself going through a multi-month pistachio white mocha latte phase if i lived here.

Javin E.

Yelp
One of the most consistent breakfast places in the metro. Sandwiches, bagels to-go, it's always great. They will even mix in multiple cream cheeses. Seasonal offers are interesting to try also!

Ingrid A.

Yelp
Where's the lox? If I'm spending $25 on two bagels, I want to eat more than a thin little scrap of lox.
google avatar

Paul N.

Yelp
Was craving a good deli sandwich and found 5 Borough Bagels. I got the Pastrami on an everything bagel. It was great. The pastrami tasty and was not overly fatty as some are. The bagel was dense and chewy like a bagel should be. Very satiating.
google avatar

Paul S.

Yelp
We pick up 6 bagels here every single Thursday. They remind me of the bagel quality we would get when living on the east coast. Considering they are not even close to where we live and we go out of our way to get these, there is no way you should miss this spot.
google avatar

Jaelyn H.

Yelp
Best bagels in town! I'd recommend this place to any and everyone in the Des Moines metro

Abby J.

Yelp
Always amazing. Obsessed with the Bronx. Anytime I am in the area, I get 5 borough- pro tip to order ahead because it gets busy especially on the weekends!!!

Erika F.

Yelp
Visiting from Texas and came across this place, I decided to order the empire on a cheddar bagel with jalapeño cream cheese because a man on yelp posted a picture of his bagel and it looked delicious and a iced chia latte. And let me tell you it is, I decided to get it to go to eat in my hotel room and it's nice, yummy and warm!! Thank you to the girls working there, they were so nice and inviting!! Next day update I decided to go again before I leave and order a lunch item, let me tell you!! This pastrami on a cheddar bagel with mayo no mustard, add onion and Sriracha bacon cream cheese is amazing!! Truly unforgettable! And again the staff were so nice and welcoming, they even remembered me from yesterday!

Yelp
Love this bagel place. Great selections all around & staff is always pleasant. Often order for pick up - quick & accurate.

Yelp
Great bagels and good coffee to boot! The bagel sandwiches are hearty and filling. Love the cream cheese varieties too.
