The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week - Eater LA

"After months of hearing my best pals rave about the good cooking at 5 Stars Hue, my family and I finally made it there for lunch. On the menu are specialties from the central Vietnamese city of Hue including better-known dishes like bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), as well as less common ones like cha oc (steamed pork forcemeat with snails) and nem lui (grilled pork shoulder skewers). Also on hand are delicate little nibbles like banh beo, banh ram it, and banh bot loc. While most of LA’s Vietnamese restaurants are generalists of the genre, it’s never been easier to get a taste of regional cooking with 5 Stars’ three Southland locations in Duarte, El Monte, and Alhambra." - Eater Staff

The foods are good but not quite 5 Stars yet. The featured Banh Bo Hue tasted similar to the noodles from the the Hue and Danang areas. The menu is also filled with dishes from the central region of Vietnam. We came to the Alhambra branch to try out their foods after we read fromYelp about the new and hot restaurants in San Gabriel area. Upon the recommendations from the waiter, we decided to order a Banh Beo, the popular Bun Bo Hue without the blood cake, and the Bun Vermicelli salad. The Banh Beo was very good. The flavor the texture of the rice cake matches very closely with the food from central Vietnam. The Bun salad is kind of a miss. The pork came with the dish was chunky and bland. The tofu crispy skin was shot though. They nailed the texture and crispiness of the tofu. Finally the Bun Bo Hue noodle. This dish is a popular Vietnamese soup containing rice vermicelli and beef. Huế is a city in central Vietnam associated with the cooking style of the former royal court. The dish is greatly admired for its balance of spicy, salty, and umami flavors. The predominant flavor is that of lemongrass. But here, I didn't sensed any lemongrass flavor. Overall, the foods are not too bad. Definitely worth a try. There seemed to be many of my Vietnamese favorite dishes on the menu.

Got food here for take out. They deserve 5 stars!! Clean resto, very polite employees and good food for its price!! The serving portion is way better than some restaurants we have tried before. We had special requests and they accommodated it.

Heard this place recommended on the Dave Chang podcast for their spring rolls. Stopped in for lunch and very impressed with the portion size and price, but most important the taste and friendly service. Grilled pork skewers, Bun Bo Hue and pork/shrimp spring rolls.

Checking out Five Stars Hue new location in Alhambra and was disappointed. My bun bo hue did not come sprawling with green onions. The pho came with flat noodles instead of real pho noodles. AND they had no iced coffee at 10:30am on a weekend. ???????????? One star for food and accommodations. The service was attentive as the waiter asked a few times if everything was ok. I've had better bun bo hue at Nha Trang. Will not be coming back.
