On the Grid : 5411 Empanadas

"This popular food truck turned brick and mortar has been cranking out some of the city's best empanadas since 2009 (since 2012 in this storefront). Named after the international dialing code for Buenos Aires, 5411 has brought a little bit of Argentina to Clark Street – and there's no mistaking that trademark blue. The space is modern and airy and the patio is perfect for a warm day's quick eats. Plus, 5411 is BYOB. I recommend grabbing a 6-pack nearby (Binny's, etc), a friend and one of many distinctly shaped savory pastries. Don't pass on the Malbec beef. Do not." - Studio Malt

Where to Eat Empanadas in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"Named for the international dialing code for Buenos Aires, Argentina, 5411 Empanadas started as a food truck before opening its first permanent location in Lakeview in 2012. They’ve kept growing since, adding restaurants in Wicker Park, Lakeview, and Evanston and shipping frozen empanadas around the country. The chain offers 16 varieties including an Impossible plant-based version of the traditional Argentine empanada made with ground beef, diced potatoes, sauteed onions, scallions, and green olives, and pork chorizo sauteed with red peppers combined with black beans and scrambled eggs. They are served with chimichurri or roasted jalapeno hot sauce." - Sam Nelson

5411 Empanadas Review - Lakeview - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This is a small counter-service operation with delicious baked empanadas. They have about 15 varieties daily, with flavors like beef, Nutella and banana, or bacon with date and goat cheese. They’re all really good, and the best strategy is to order as many as can fit on your table." - Adrian Kane

Google
I got the impossible and Mac and cheese empanadas, and they were pretty good! They warmed up well for breakfast the next day. I’m glad to find a competently made Mac and cheese. They’re kind of on the small side, but there is a display on the counter to show you exactly how big they are so you know what you’re getting. I also got an alfajor which was pretty tasty. The store feels very cozy. They have board games!

Google
Fantastic empanadas, especially during their $2 per empanada deals (typically on Tuesdays). The interior is quite charming, with a good amount of seating and a café that also serves coffees. As for the flavors I've tried, my top picks are bacon date goat cheese, followed by spinach & cheese, Malbec beef, chicken curry, mushroom thyme & blue cheese, and finally chorizo & patatas.

Google
The most amazing empinadas, bacon, cheese and dates is superb, price is reasonable! Very European!!

Google
Paid $18 for combo of 3 small empanadas. Didn't have much flavor and was very dry.

We had 5411Empanadas Food Truck at our Winnemac Park Fourth for All event on July 4th. We could not have been happier with them being present for our event for the second year in a row. The empanandas are delicious with fresh ingredients, and the crew was amazing to work with. Very professional in delivering a high quality meal. We highly recommend them for your next private or community event.

Can't imagine a more cozy and relaxing space to enjoy Argentinian Empanadas. I've been to the Southport corridor location numerous times because the Music Box theater is conveniently close but today I came here after enjoying bunny therapy at a nearby bunny rabbit boutique. My server was extra cheerful and nice and happily for me he he kind of messed up my order by preparing two spinach and cheese Empanadas instead of one spinach and one mac n cheese 🧀 so he brought me both spinach and cheese Empanadas and cooked me my mac n cheese so I ended up getting 3 Empanadas for the price of two. I also picked a Nutella and banana 🍌 Empanada for dessert but honestly my preference are the savory Empanadas and there's so many to choose from you won't have any issues finding a flavor you love. Great service and yummy, unique flavors. This is a great place to get your Empanadas fix.

Google
I had an assortment of 5 different flavors and they were all tasty! I am a huge fan of baked empanadas. Can’t go wrong with these spot. I just wish they were a bit bigger on size. I like the ambience and decoration. The place looked very clean.

Google
After living in Argentina, one of the foods I missed the most was empanadas. The beef empanadas are definitely authentic! The alfajores are really good as well. Definitely worth a try.

Yelp
We recently used the 5411 Empanada Truck for our wedding. It was a HIT! we had mini empanadas and chimichurri and our guests loved it! They were delicious and the guy working the truck was great! He even helped our servers even though he was done for the night. If you are looking for a food truck for your next event I highly recommend 5411!

Yelp
Took 10 minutes to re-heat. Not freshly made. So disappointing. I think that this place was better years ago.

Yelp
Small space inside and service was good. They have a selection of vegetarian empanada. If you buy a bake it latter option, then u need 2 buy it in 8 quantity. I got 4 empanada and reheated it the next day. It tasted good. Impossible - 5/5 Corn - 4/5 Grilled onion and cheese 3/5 Mushroom - 1/5

Yelp
Not bad, but there's better. I'll give credit where it's due. There's a good selection of empanadas, and the service is fast. The empanadas themselves are also quite tasty and filling, with high quality ingredients. However, I've had empanadas at a couple of other spots on Southport that were cheaper and higher end. If you're specifically looking for quality Argentine empanadas, it's probably better to go there. Still, these aren't bad and if you're passing by and want an interesting snack, try it.

Yelp
I got the sweet corn (vegetarian) and impossible vegan flavor! Very cozy, inexpensive and full of umami, deliciousness. I enjoyed the impossible vegan one more than the sweet corn. It was much more rich and full-bodied. Don't underestimate the size!

Yelp
I stumbled across this place on a whim -- thank gosh they had their menu posted in the window! The atmosphere was calm and inviting and the Aerin, the cashier, was friendly! I got the goat cheese and bacon empanada and it was scrumdiddlyumptious! A great place for nice savory bite when you're on the go!

Yelp
This tiny, unassuming and modern spot packs a punch. My partner and I enjoy empanadas and with this being our first time, we tried 5 different ones. For only 3.75 a pop, I feel it's a crime to not indulge a bit! Malbec Beef: succulent, subtle, rosemary is a lovely addition. Chicken Curry: zesty, vibrant, and paired so well with the chimichurri* Bacon Dates Goat Cheese: elevated comfort food in an empanada; not enough cheese to balance the dates Chorizo Patatas & Cheese: order it. :) Beef: well rounded and tender - classic *(both sauces were so fresh and balanced well with flavors instead of overpowering - must get!) We'll be back soon to try the coffee!

Yelp
Food - the fig one I think is the best for sure. All of them r pretty good. Service - pretty nice nothing crazy Ambiance - pretty small so not too much space for large parties I got this on Ubereats

Yelp
This place has a solid selection of empanadas ranging from simple traditional beef and chicken empanadas to more unique options. I got the malbec beef and bacon/date/goat cheese empanadas and both were tasty! Good place to go if you are walking in the area and want a quick bite to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Yum. I've had ordered delivery twice, and both times enjoyed each of the empanada varieties I've tried. My favorite is the bacon, dates and goat cheese. One observation: on my first order, each empanada was wrapped in paper printed identifying the filling. It also seemed to help keep them warm throughout the meal. The second time, they were unwrapped and all boxed together; I didn't see a way to identify them. I hope the paper wrappers come back next time. But be sure, there will be a next time.

Yelp
Affordable, efficient, and delicious! Came here for a quick bite to eat before going to The Music Box Theater for an event. We went in to order a few empanadas and then sat outside in their little patio. The food came out quickly on trays and we devoured them! There are many fillings to choose from. I got the sweet corn, chicken curry, and the mushroom thyme & blue cheese one. They were all so good and my favorite was the sweet corn. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area :)

Yelp
I heard someone say eating a delicious bowl of Mac and cheese is like a hug in your mouth. Well, I'd consider these empanadas to be like mini hugs. They are small but can be packed with big flavor. Surprisingly these snack size empanadas can fill you up. I usually order the Ground Beef, Malbec, and BBQ Chicken. The Malbec has a hearty shredded beef texture that makes me want to have a side of mashed potatoes with it. The beef empanada is shredded beef without the Malbec flavors and it comes with pieces of sauteed onion as part of the beef mixture. The BBQ chicken is similar to eating a tender piece of BBQ chicken without a lot of sauce. It's actually quite mild without much tang, which is fine. Each time I've gone the service has been good and the orders come fairly quickly. I prefer the outdoor seating which is more comfortable. The inside part of 5411 is pretty small. There are no tables but you can stand or sit at the bar-like counter.

Yelp
If you want lots of empanada options, this is the place for you. Walking in, this place is super cute and very clean and trendy. They had so many different types of empanadas you could get and some vegetarian and vegan options too! I tried the sweet corn and mushroom thyme and blue cheese empanadas. The sweet corn was ooey and sweet. The mushroom one had an umami flavor to it. The mushroom one was really drippy though. Both were delicious but I felt like it was small for the price. Great little place though. I like that you can get it to go and bake it at home.

Yelp
I was there on a Friday when they first open. The lady behind the counter was very rude. She looked frustrated and aggravated to serve me. I asked her "are you ok". She didn't respond. I asked again and she ignored me. I then told her I don't need to pay for bad service. She said I don't need to smile or be nice to serve you. I walked out without ordering.
google avatar

Yelp
Felt this the empanadas got the 'Tex-mex' treatment in terms of reducing the flavor of the contents inside most of the empanadas we ordered. The flavors ordered were: - Beef, 3/10 - Malbec Beef, 6/10 - Mushroom, Thyme, & Blue Cheese, 9/10 - Chicken Curry, 3/10 - Spinach and Cheese, 1/10 - Bacon, Cheddar, Egg, 3/10 There was only one empanada that was packed full of flavor, while the rest I had to drown in chimichurri sauce to get any kind of enjoyment out of. Price point can get pretty expensive if the goal is beyond just a regular snack. Value 4/10 I'd only come back if I was craving the thyme & blue cheese empanada.
google avatar

Rachel S.

Yelp
Ordered 3 empanadas: - beef - spinach and cheese - chorizo patatas and cheese The stamped initials were a cute (and practical) touch so you can differentiate between each empanada!! It is a small dining area inside, but seems like most people order to-go. They also have a game selection if you want to play at a table.

Jill F.

Yelp
A trend that I've noticed in certain quasi fancy restaurants is offering items for seemingly affordable prices but then giving them to you in such small amounts that you're forced to spend more in order to get a reasonable amount of food. The empanadas at this place are fine but so absurdly tiny that I personally would need 3 or even 4 to have a reasonable meal. So what seems like it's going to be affordable quickly balloons in cost. Why not just charge a bit more per empanada and have them be the size of a normal one? It does feel like style over substance bc the fillings aren't noticeably better than a regular empanada place
google avatar

Aaliyah L.

Yelp
I've found myself eating from here several times just out of convenience and wanting a snack, but I've always felt like they could be more flavorful. I've tried the spinach & cheese, caramelized onion, bbq chicken, Mac and cheese and a few more and they could definitely be better. They're pretty good to just put something on your stomach, but for the price...I'd opt for something else.
google avatar

Yelp
Man, I've been living on an island for 5+ years and but just moved to Chicago. Now in from Queens so I grew up with empanadas and kinda pan Latin cuisine, but these just hot the spot in so many ways. I mean check out their menu and sauces. It's like an empanada culinary journey! Like the Merlot beef. Delicious on its own, then you hit it with the Chimichurri and it's no so delicious. Honestly the Chimichurri is pretty solid on most things. My other favorite was the bacon date and goat cheese. I mean honestly, I'd just order one of each. Not one disappointed.
google avatar

Shelby H.

Yelp
Yummy $2 Tuesday empanadas! The bacon, dates, and goat cheese empanada is the best! Nutella and banana is delicious sweet treat too.

Fritz C.

Yelp
More than $4 for teeny tiny empanada with somewhat burnt dough. And then they have to nerve to charge you extra for salsa. Do yourself a favor and go to Cafe Tola instead.

Gina T.

Yelp
All empanadas served are Argentinian style. They were ok...interesting combinations. They tasted as though they were reheated in a microwave, almost soggy. Very overpriced for what you are buying. In my experience, I was disappointed
google avatar

Cecilia D.

Yelp
This will be my go to place! All the ones I got were delicious! Especialy love curry chicken, bbq chicken, mushroom, chorizo!! Full of flavors, you can taste the moist and juiciness inside! The cortado was pretty good as well:)
google avatar

Reba Z.

Yelp
Fabulous empanadas. I love the new fake beef one! Trying to get my whole staff hooked on them so we can order from here more often.

Becca W.

Yelp
The empanadas tasted old and were tiny. I was disappointed because when I had one in the city it was better but that was several years ago.
google avatar

Leslie S.

Yelp
What a precious little gem. You'll find this wandering through Lakeview and taking in the sights and sounds and won't be able to walk past, it's so cute and inviting. And whoa, is it worth the stop. Little delightful fresh baked empanadas filled with goodness. Get the hit sauce and thank me later!
google avatar

Paul R.

Yelp
Probably the worst empanadas I ever ate. And the coffee was horrendous. If you like it there; more power to you.
google avatar

Christie N.

Yelp
Ugh I love this place so much. Lots of great empanada stuffings, they're not greasy, and the chimichurri is well worth the extra cost. It's a small spot, but the patio is pretty adorable if it's open / you visit when it's warm. My Uruguayan parents even approve (even if these are Argentinian empanadas :P). Definitely worth a visit!! Side note: each empanada type used to have its own unique (literal) twist so that you could tell which is which. They were super cute in theory, but pretty challenging in practice if you went with a few people and ordered a ton of different empanadas. There was a handy chart to tell which is which based on the twist, but it was like a freaking escape room puzzle to just get your food. They recently fixed this by now stamping initials on the dough that correspond to the stuffing. Less cute but way more straightforward.
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
The food was good and fresh, service outstanding and location clean. Easily access some street parking. Public transportation service great let's you off right at the front door. The only thing is it's a distance away from my home.
google avatar

JulieAnn V.

Yelp
Ordered catering (take and bake) empanadas for a small gathering. Everything was amazing and a great value! Empanadas were delicious with a wide range of options. HUGE salad with delicious dressing. Enjoyed the option to bake empanadas on the spot for guests. Had no worries about left overs since I could freeze the few that were left. Individually wrapped alfajores were a favorite too with the option to take home.
google avatar

Yelp
Let's say you're out an about and need a snack, you're going to a party and need to bring something to share, or just want a lot of empanadas just for yourself ... this place is a winner for all of the above! I've always experienced fresh, flavorful, super tasty, consistent food. Favorites include the bacon, date, goat cheese one and the malbec beef (tastes like the way all pot roasts ever SHOULD be). Okay gotta go because I'm getting hungry! ;) I believe they also offer take and bake options, too, should you need to travel with them or want them hot and fresh out the kitchen! P.S. Friends really like the mac & cheese one; I hear it has a little kick to it!
google avatar

Yelp
First time trying it. Chicken curry and beef with the side of chimichurri sauce is fire

Yelp
Stopped by for something quick between studying at two cafes. I've passed by this location and the wicker location a couple times and they both looked great! Each empanada is 2.75 and they're not too big. I would say that they're filling for their size though! My boyfriend and I ordered malbec beef, bbq chicken, and chorizo and potatoes. All the empanadas were delicious, my favorite was probably the malbec beef, even though I'm not a fan of cooked carrots, which it's filled with! The flavor of each empanada was a tasty boom. There was also a new mac n cheese empanada, which didn't sound that great, but in pictures didn't look bad! The place is small - a communal table, two smaller individual tables, and window seating. This is more of a place you'd stop by for a quick bite, when you're not too hungry. Fun fact: 5411 is the area code. 54 is the country code for Argentina and 11 is the area code for Buenos Aires.
google avatar

Yelp
Great, well made empanadas! They have lots of filling inside and a thin crust that holds up well. I ordered a couple for delivery and they came hot and fresh. I got the chicken curry, Malbec beef, and chorizo black bean and egg empanadas. They all were very flavorful! I'd definitely recommend the chicken curry and Malbec beef; the chorizo empanada was good too but a little bit dry. My favorite of the 3 was the Malbec beef, the meat was very tender and the filling tasted like a beef stew. My only criticism would be that the empanadas are pretty small, so they are a little pricey for the amount of food you get. I'd probably give this place 4.5 stars for the portion size but the great flavor and amount of filling make up for it. I would order more empanadas from this place again!
google avatar

Betsy K.

Yelp
Really tasty empanadas! I ordered the chicken curry, bacon, date and goat cheese, and spinach and cheese empanadas for $11.89, which seems pretty reasonable. They were all pretty unique and had really nice flavor combinations. Other than that I don't have much to say about them, but the flavors and prices were good!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Super yummy empanadas I recommend the mac n cheese one! Yum yum yum yum yum yum yum yum! Yummy yum
google avatar

Ernie H.

Yelp
It's hard not to like this place. First of all, Empanadas are made fresh to order. Second the proprietors are from Argentina, hence the name 5411 which is the dialing code for Argentina - how authentic can you get? It's a small space with that East Lakeview/ Lincoln Park vibe. What exactly is that vibe? Chic modern a touch minimalist and mostly millennials. The Empanadas itself is fine. I'm nitpicking here the crust is not the flaky crispy filo dough I'm used to growing up but that doesn't take away from the overall experience. They have outdoor seating in the summer. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Michael V.

Yelp
A great place for some quick empanadas, to hang out and enjoy the nice weather outside. I only got the chance to try out one of the empanadas and I came here right before going to dinner so I'll have to try it again. I tried the Malbec Beef Empanada and it was pretty good. The meat was really tender and it was like having beef stew in an empanada. It really was like beef stew actually as I bit into it, the juices came out! I let it sit for a couple minutes and even biting into it then was rather hot so that's good that it stays hot for awhile. I would've enjoyed it more if there was a little less juice and it was more stew like where the juice would be more like a sauce. I'm pretty impartial when it comes to that as I love to eat things that are really saucy. Either way, it was pretty good and with a couple tweaks I could easily see this being a favorite place. They're open decently late and with a patio outside, it's a fantastic option for some summer snacking!

Yelp
Very fresh, excellent service as well. I recommend the dates and also the chicken curry.

Yelp
YUM! We stopped in here for a quick lunch and this place didn't disappoint. The empanadas were smaller than expected so I recommend ordering more than 2 if you're really hungry. We ordered the Mac n cheese and the spinach and ricotta empanadas and decided to order the chimichurri sauce and the hot sauce as well. I'm glad we did, the empanadas were delicious but the sauces made them even better. All in all a great experience and can't wait to to try this place out again!
google avatar

Ann L.

Yelp
Ordered via Fooda today and didn't get the correct order :( I got 2 beef empanadas - one was mislabeled and was actually spinach and cheese. Also ordered chimichurri sauce which I paid for and was missing :( The one beef empanada I had was pretty good! Bummed out my first experience with this shop wasn't the best. Everything was cold upon arrival.. maybe I was supposed to heat it up?

Yelp
Great spot in Lincoln Park for delicious empanadas! I stop by whenever I am in the nieghborhood.

Yelp
I can't tell ya how many times I've walked by this place and wanted to try their empanadas, but the thing that finally hooked me was their "Impossible" one advertised on a chalkboard near the door (which I figured would be vegan, but apparently is only vegetarian. So, after seeing a movie at a nearby cinema yesterday, I went in and got 8 frozen turnovers to bake at home... 4 of the "Impossible" (which mimics beef) and 4 "Ratatouille" (which really are vegan). They were all delicious! I also got a jar of their in-house-made chimichurri, but the lid of the jar didn't work and leaked on my entire walk home, which I hope is an exception to the rule; I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that. The pungent yumminess has been transferred to a more secure container for future use. :-) I'm hoping to ship some frozen ones to my boyfriend next week... I know he'll love them!

Juan C.

Yelp
Probably the worst empanadas ive had in my life. Overall, I found the flavors to be quite gross and unappetizing. These are probably great for people with limited experience with empanadas. Definitely not your culturally accurate empanada. Had the malbec beef-strange texture and flavor, not appetizing. Curry chicken tasted like rotisserie chicken with curry powder, thats it. I would recommend any other traditional Cuban or Caribbean restaurant. Will be actively telling my Latinx folx to not go here.
google avatar

Richard Y.

Yelp
What? Authentic Argentinian empanadas in Chicago? As soon as you look up the name, expectations rise. And 5411 delivers. I tried the Malbec shredded beef, bacon dates and cheese, and the Mac and cheese (maybe not as authentic but fun). The empanadas are total eye candy, beautifully baked golden brown and in different shapes to indicate flavor. Add the chimichurri dipping sauce for extra flavor. It worked with all 3 flavors. These are nicely sized at $3 each. A friendly staff that was knowledgeable about the products and their roots too.
google avatar

Yelp
The best empanadas I've ever had. We first found this place a year ago. We loved it so much we went back the next day and one more time before our flight to take home. This is a must try!!
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Love love this little place! Great to pop in for lunch and I love the small empanadas allow for you to order a variety of stuff. They were cooked perfectly and my favorite was the spinach and cheese followed by the malbec beef. Highly recommend this place with its quick service great decor and little outside patio! The bacon, dates & goat cheese is only recommended if you really like sweet stuff. I was expecting a bit more savory with the bacon like a salty sweet but it was way too sweet for any of our liking.

Yelp
I stopped at 5411 empanadas for a mid day lunch. The store is small but perfect for a quick bite. I ordered the beef and the spinach and cheese empanadas. Each of the empanadas has a slightly different shape, which is an interesting touch. I also order the chimichurri sauce. The beef was soooo good. I loved the moist meat and the outside was perfectly crispy. The spinach and cheese was perfect for the cold day. You must order the chimichurri sauce to dip it in because it's so flavorful. I throughly enjoyed my experience with 5411 empanadas and will def be back. One thing to keep in mind is that that make each one fresh so it did take a tad bit longer than if you were at a standard fast food place.
