22 Essential Tamales in Los Angeles

"Chef Wendy Centeno of this popular Salvadoran food truck is making chicken tamales for the holidays, cooked in a tomato and sweet pepper sauce, sliced potatoes, carrots, in fresh masa wrapped in banana leaves. Centeno’s modern Salvadoran approach means vegan versions of her chicken tamales are on the menu. Call your order in to reserve a dozen and throw in some pupusas while you’re at it." - Bill Esparza

Yelp
Iconic urban lights at LACMA. A must see for any first time visitor or lifelong local. The downside is there isn't really any street parking available if you're coming here just for this. LACMA parking is pricey. But the lights are worth seeing at least once. Today it was raining and the exhibit was still top notch.

Yelp
Finally got to see these "Urban Lights" up close and personal! You've seen it all over social media. It's an extremely popular outdoor exhibit at LACMA by Chris Burden that was installed in 2008. The art piece consists of a collection of 202 beautifully restored, vintage, cast-iron street lamps and is open to the public 24 hours a day. It felt VERY touristy and is not a very big exhibit, but glad we got to see it and check this one off of the LA list. We were able to snag a few nice photos with the fam and despite the consistent crowds, you could find pockets of time where you cane make it "look like" it's empty. I think it would've looked even nicer during the evening, but the timing didn't work for our schedule. If you can choose, opt for the evening/night when the lights are on. As far as parking goes, there's street parking directly across the street from the exhibit and we were lucky enough to snag a spot right by the stop light. Score!

Yelp
Maybe one of the most iconic, most instagrammable LA landmarks or exhibits in the entire city. I seriously think that at least a pic of this spot is featured in every tour guide to Los Angeles out there. I know I've seen it on ads to attract people to come to the two major universities of the city. It's located on the outside of LACMA so it's free (although I would urge you to go into LACMA and be a patron of the arts). You can also walk through it, so it's also interactive. From further away or driving by on the street, it is definitely eye catching, especially during the evening when the lights turn on. Now, I am no architect, but to this layperson, I feel like there is a wonderful spatiality with this exhibit that probably adds to the eye pleasing characteristics. Definitely a fun spot for locals and tourists alike. It's also close to an area with lots of good eateries, so easy to make a prolonged trip out of it.

Yelp
Brought my girls here for the first time. It was nice because there wasn't a lot of people and it was easy to get some nice pictures in.

Yelp
Also a beautiful piece of art regardless of how many people are there. The best time to go is just before sunset to see the lights both off and on. Parking can be a challenge especially if you park down the street into the neighborhoods.

Yelp
Such a fun and impromptu stop on a Friday night. My friends and I loved it. It's a beautiful backdrop for photos, definitely, but also an interesting exhibit to visit with friends and family. We parked below LACMA. My friend's Tesla needed her adapter to charge, I recall her mentioning that and we had trouble downloading the charging station app, so if you can, do your homework before, I suggest trying to find out what app or account info you need in order to charge your Tesla. After 8pm, parking Friday night was a flat rate $13.

Yelp
"Let there be light!" And so, there was light--not just one light but a splendid array of several light posts outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Urban Light at LACMA in Los Angeles, created by artist Chris Burden, is a fascinating free-to-enjoy outdoor immersive installation that's always open for exploration. It has become an iconic landmark, drawing locals and tourists alike. It's not merely a static exhibit but a dynamic part of the city's landscape. It's not tucked away inside the museum; instead, you'll find it right on the streetside. The simplicity of the concept and its assemblage are what make it stand out - 202 vintage street lamps collected from all over, now standing tall together, creating 'the forest of city street lights.' My LA native friend brought me here late at night as one of our stops while we explored the streets of the City of Angels. What's interesting is that although there's nothing particularly spectacular about it during the day, it transforms into something enchanting when the lights are turned on from dusk till dawn. It has become a popular spot for photos, and capturing it in photos creates an illusion. It's no surprise why - it's incredibly Instagrammable. So, if you're in the mood for an evening stroll or just want a spot offering a different perspective for some stunning pictures, Urban Light at LACMA is worth a stop. It might seem like a collection of old street lamps, but it's the simplicity and the magic it brings, especially when the lights are aglow, that make it a unique and delightful experience and a captivating spectacle that you can truly appreciate.

Yelp
Iconic art piece. Especially in the world of Instagram/social media. It's a fun piece of art that is free to the public, but that's about it. It's full of people trying to get the best art shot they can get, especially as the sun sets and the lights turn on. Honestly, you can see the art piece from the street. For most people, that might be enough. But if you're already planning a trip to LACMA or the Tar Pits next door, you might as well take some time strolling through the old Los Angeles street lights. Free things in LA are hard to come by and this here is a famous one.

Yelp
Free- open 24 hours- 365 days No tripod , tripod is only allowed on the sidewalk not inside the light pillars area . no standing on the pillars . No restroom, street parking I recommend to come later in the evening after 9 pm less crowd and At night the light illuminates beautifully .

Yelp
Free. Great place to take unique (wedding, prom, etc.) photos. Something to check off your bucket list. Open 24 hours, security on site.

Yelp
Urban lights is a must stop for pics when coming to LA. I've had this on my list to see for so long and I finally made it a point to check out during our latest trip last December. We arrived around 7:50pm and scored street parking nearby in front of a gym. With about 20mins left on the meter from someone before us, we dashed over to take some family photos. I recommend coming in the evenings/night for picture perfect photos. If you have photoshop skills, then don't worry about the crowd behind you in the pictures. Find a spot with the least amount of ppl in the row and snap away!
google avatar

Yelp
It's an amazing and iconic place to visit with your family and friends in Los Angeles. It's a beautiful spot to take plenty of pictures. Best time to visit is during dusk and night time because that's when the lights are turned on. It does get pretty crowded during evenings. Metered parking on the streets are available. I highly recommend visiting this place if you're in LA.

Yelp
Unplanned/planned visit! Such a cool spot with a lot of history dating back to 1920s Doesn't matter what time of the day you visit! It's always a nice view! Makes for great photos too!

Yelp
I heard about these lights and seen photos in social media, they called it "Urban Light." So when we were out and about in LA we went to see them. To some it may just be a bunch of lamp post but to me it's a beautiful street display. You can take a great photo wherever you stand and to me every angle is great! Day or night you can produce an awesome photo. When I was here, there were people taking graduation photos. If you come at the right time without anyone here, you can probably take wedding photographs (that is an assumption). Anyway, if you're in LA and looking for a little photo spot this is one to go to. These lights is outside next to Los Angeles museum. I don't think they are connected. There is no fee to look at these lights or fees to take photos at the site. But I do know there is a fee to get in to the museum. We didn't do the museum, because we came near closing time. Also we parked on the street, there were meter parking on the side where we parked, we were lucky to find one. The only negative is there could be a lot of people at times so you just have to find your photo "spot."
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by to take photos. This an iconic LA landmark. Free street & metered parking. Great for people who love taking photos (like my mom).

Yelp
Unplanned adventures are always the best. Decided that the weather was too nice to spend indoors, so I went to hit up a spot that's been in my bookmarks for a long long time. The Urban Light at LACMA! But it's like that one meme: "I hate when I go out in public and the public be there." Lol JK! But yeah, everyone was also enjoying the beautiful Sunday weather outdoors at LACMA. It was kinda funny watching everyone (including the tita's and the tito's) posing by the light post. Was able to get some nice pictures. And a plane drew a heart in the sky. So that was pretty cool. Will I be back? Yup! For sure! It definitely did not disappoint! See you soon Urban Light at LACMA!!

Yelp
The urban lights in LA are beautiful! It's one of the most popular artworks in the US and it's open 24 hours. Lots of people take pictures inside the structure. Depending on where you stand, you can see different angles and arrays. My mom and I went around 11am on a weekday and there were only a couple other people at the site. Street parking is super convenient. Overall rating: 10/10

Yelp
Visiting here is a must when you're visiting the LA Brea Tarpits.. A family walk I enjoy, it's perfect for a date or even better there is Pokémon and poke stops all over so go catch them all!! We always find parking for a fee. There's a restaurant that is pretty active and another museum to visit. Plus the walkway with the view of the big ol' boulder on top. Great for pictures and sightseeing.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful and creative! We loved our quick pit stop here. The only downside is parking -- there is some street parking nearby but it looked burden and unsafe so we parked in a garage.
google avatar

Ruksana H.

Yelp
An LA landmark! You've seen it in a bunch of movies too. Good luck trying to get a clear shot though as the place is usually full of folks trying to get videos and photos around it!

Yelp
We came here for Friday Jazz at LACMA. Best kept secret and they have the makeshift stage by the Urban light art installation. Here are some tips: 1. LACMA parking (on 6th street behind museum) is $20 and $12 after 8 pm 2. Bring a chair if you are arriving on time Or reserve the chairs but get there early if you are watching the free jazz concert 3. Street parking is available if you have time to circle around the area and pay attention to signs to avoid unnecessary parking tickets 4. Visit the LACMA website for additional Parking sites 5. The Urban Light installation is iconic and insta famous per my teenager to the point she did not want to have her picture taken :/

Yelp
While I was in Los Angeles, I knew I had to visit the lights at LACMA and take some pictures at night! I went here around 10:50pm on a Thursday night during my trip recently and there were a lot of people! It is also free to take pictures at the lights. When I was trying to take my pictures, it got a little difficult to get pictures without people in the background. I also noticed a lot of people were here to film videos of them here. I ended up spending about 2 hours here since I was waiting for there to be less people so that I won't be in their pictures and videos and they won't be in mine. I'd recommend this place! This is a cool place since it is available 24/7 and is free to take pictures at! There is a security guard here to make sure everyone is behaving well around the lights. I only went during the night time, so I know it's crowded at night, but maybe it'll be less crowded during the day? I ended up finding an empty corner here to get my pictures.
google avatar

Gisela J.

Yelp
It's pretty cool here. There's some construction going around there still pretty good
google avatar

Eva S.

Yelp
It's always amazing to come here! I truly think it's even better in the middle of the night when there's nobody around and you can have the whole place just for yourself. This spot is perfect for a photo shoot! Plus, it's one of the most famous areas in Hollywood for filming movies.
google avatar

Raphael P.

Yelp
How can this place not be 5 stars. It's a ton of fun with a group, it's scenic, it's clean and there's security people around. It's also free, so one can visit a cool LA staple and that's awesome. It's super touristy for a reason- highly recommend visiting!
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
I proposed to my (now) fiancee here! She loves art and she loved her proposal! I highly recommend coming here, especially if you love art. If you are just into cool Instagram photos, this is also a place to visit! I recommend coming at night, after dark, ideally after 9 PM because that's when the crowd finally starts to die down. The lights come on at sunset and turn off at sunrise, so the later you come, the better (with the least amount of people). There are no lines to see this place or take photos, but there will be people in your photos if you visit before 9 PM any day of the week or weekend.

Yelp
This was my second time visiting the Urban Light Exhibition, but it was my first time taking pictures :) I had been bothering my man about taking pics here & I recently got to take pictures with him after a comedy show on Oct 7th No matter what time you visit this exhibit it gets packed with people. We came at 1 am Friday night, technically it was Saturday already & it was still busy with people. Luckily though as we arrived a big group of people were heading out & only a few people were here. We were blessed & encountered a couple that blessed us with taking pictures of us & likewise we returned the favor ;) I have no shame asking strangers to take pics of us lol as I always return the favor (if they want the favor returned) Now a little background on this exhibition. It is composed of 202 historic streetlamps dating from the 1920s and 1930s. We can give thanks to artist Chris Burden (Jeff Levine started the collection of these lamps before Mr. Burden put the work together. I gotta give him a shout out too) for putting this masterpiece together & of course thanks to the Brandon-Gordon family for the founding support. These lights are a source of true inspiration. For me it makes me think of the scripture, "The light shines in the darkness, & the darkness has not overcome it."-John 1:5 I absolutely love the intricate details & craftsmanship of these lamps & if you examine them closely you'll realize that they're not all alike. I found it cute that my man & I took pics by a lamp with a "G" on it :) both our last names begin with G, that happened completely unplanned. Overall this spot is a 5/5 for me. If you're trying to avoid the masses of people I suggest you come late at night 1-2 am lol

Yelp
Very cool art installation that's been at LACMA for what feels for years! Every time I drive by on Wilshire, day or night, rain or shine - tourists and locals alike crowd the lights with their cell phones pointing...up! I had a friend in town and decided to show her the lights and she ate them up! We got parking right up front and ran up. This is definitely a fun, fast idea for a lifetime of memories!
google avatar

Karyn E.

Yelp
Fun activity, great photo op and free! We came on a late...10-11pm hour and it was still quite busy. A neat place for photo op and people were generally very courteous about giving space to picture takers. It wasn't as big as I had imagined, nor as empty as I was hoping it would be for the hour we came. But it was worth the drive if staying in the LA area. Parking is on the street and wasn't difficult to get, however given the late hour it was probably much easier than during the day. I imagine it gets very busy during the day.
google avatar

Frank K.

Yelp
This place came up for what to see in LA. Located in downtown area. Next to the Tar Pits. There is a lot of construction in that area so can't park anywhere nearby. Since going during the daytime, not as crowded. I read that night time is busy, which is understandable because of the lights. It's still cool to take some pictures and see the different lights.
google avatar

Hollyann M.

Yelp
Don't pay a private photographer. Just pop over to this outdoor exhibit and take some photos yourself.
google avatar

Israel G.

Yelp
I came here just to take some selfies. Lol. but I'm 99% sure this is why this place exists. I came on a Tuesday evening and it wasn't too crowded. There were a few times where I had to wait for some people to clear out so I could get a good picture but it wasn't terrible at all. The photos here came out amazing!! I spent about 15 minutes here. Snapped some photos and then left. Definitely worth stopping by if you're in the area.
google avatar

Alejandro T.

Yelp
It's a nice quick little date spot to hang out & take pictures. It's a staple in LA to visit this place and get some pictures/videos.
google avatar

Rosemarie F.

Yelp
We came just after dark and took pics. I loved my time there with my loved one and enjoyed the experience. We didn't get to go into the museum, just walked around and took pics trying not to get any of the million other ppl in our shots. Worth the visit and would recommend.
google avatar

James Y.

Yelp
Never been here at night but definitely a must see especially if you're looking for a good photo. The only thing is that it is the only thing at night around here and if you park in their lot, they get you for $12 and I was there for about 15 minutes. Well I guess that's what downtown parking is...lol
google avatar

Faye B.

Yelp
I always enjoy coming here and bringing family and friends who visit. The lights can be viewed 24/7, but best at night when they're on. You can park in the garage for free until 10pm but sometimes the gates block you from being able to get back to the garage close to 10pm. There is street parking on Wilshire, between Fairfax & Curson -- so not too far of a walk.
google avatar

Norbert K.

Yelp
We've enjoyed the Urban Light "sculpture" since it first went on display at LACMA in 2008. Urban Light is a collection of 202 restored cast iron antique Los Angeles street lamp that stand witness to the city's modern history. It has become a symbol of Los Angeles.
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
You can say, been there, done that! But the Urban Light at LACMA is a fun photo op place for locals and tourists alike. We can all be tourists in our own town sometimes, right? I enjoyed the new addition to the museum's entrance years ago. Took photos back then. Since then, the lights made it into many movies and TV shows. Recently, I visited LACMA for the first time since the pandemic started and I wanted to take photos of the Urban Lights. Because everything has more meaning nowadays and we missed our usual places in the city. There's a line to enter, otherwise, business as usual! So, if you visit LACMA, why not sneak a photo op in there?
google avatar

Annie W.

Yelp
The Urban Light is a spectacular place to visit if you are in the area. The parking is not free, but we were visiting the nearby Academy Museum, so it was worth it anyways. The admission, however, is free, which is a great plus of the Urban Light exhibit. There were a plentiful amount of people milling around the exhibition, and most were taking photos of the display. My only recommendation is that you visit the Urban Light at golden hour or in the evening, since the lights shine a lot brighter than in day. A great place to take photos of the scenery, and if you're nearby, pop in to visit LACMA or The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. All of these locations are rich with the history of cinematography. Definitely recommend!

Yelp
I mean - come on, who wouldn't wanna step foot where Ashton Kutcher & Natalie Portman actually walked through?! All my No Strings Attached fans know haha I've been here multiple times pre-covid so I was interested in seeing the changes that's been made amidst the whole pandemic. I was very impressed, honestly. They limit the amount of people that enter the actual lights, which means the line can get pretty long especially around sunset when they actually turn them on. There's 3 security guards roaming around on each side, making sure everyone adheres to their "keep mask on at all times" policy. Unfortunately, that means absolutely no pictures with them off considering you'll most likely be in close proximity to another group. So if you're nit picky with that & want an actual photo shoot without it, I'd suggest coming once that mask mandate is lifted! Metered parking is also usually easy to find in the back or if you're willing to pay for garage parking, that option is available too. Always worth the trip for this beautiful installation!
google avatar

Saphace A.

Yelp
A little underwhelming...haha! It's very Instagram-worthy. I didn't realize this place was so small. Had to take some pics though! Cuz why not?! I'm sure you can do a lot of nice portrait photography here. It's a free art installation right by all the museums.

K C.

Yelp
This was a great place. Seen this place in movies. It was nice for the kids to run and weave around the pols. Lots of people, was not able to get a picture with no one around. Off to the side there was the 12 Chinese horoscope/zodiac animals. Those were great! Couldn't find the reading for this to see what it meant. Go once at night and once during the day. Just a different view and vibe all together
google avatar

Jessica N.

Yelp
The traffic getting here (even during the weekday) was insane! There's street parking around the back of the museum, which I only saw after leaving and paying $20 for parking. I would recommend coming at night!
google avatar

Ed C.

Yelp
After years of seeing pictures of this place on social media, I finally visited in person. As of 4/10/2021 this installation is fully open to the public. They have security guards enforcing mask wearing and have plenty of hand sanitizer available. There is no cost to go see/interact with this installation up close. The outdoor restaurant and bar was open and buzzing. Garage parking is convenient and clean, but expensive. We were there for under an hour and paid $16 for parking. The good part is you can access LACMA, the tar pits and this installation all from the same garage. And, at least the bathrooms (trailers by the outdoor bar) are clean!

Yelp
The Terracotta Army of California. Built to protect the dinosaurs of the La Brea Tar Pits in the afterlife. People love to take pictures here but they are just streetlamps.. I do not really see the appeal. The light will wash out your photo if you are not careful. Leaned the hard way.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Perfect photo op, so why not? We were also able to find free curbside parking in the neighborhoods across the street.

Yelp
"You can't fight me! You are miniature! You fight like a hamster!" - Fight scene between Adam and Emma (2011 No Strings Attached film starring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman). Check out the YouTube clip: https://youtu.be/9yVrWNaBqpk I finally got to check out this installation in person before heading into the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is right next door to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). One day, I'll get a nighttime picture. Admission Price: Free! Parking: Street metered parking (watch for signs). Or, you can park underground at LACMA (especially, if you're planning on visiting the other surrounding museums as well). "Urban Light" was installed in front of LACMA along Wilshire Boulevard on February 8, 2008, making this landmark officially 13 years old (and counting!). Artist Chris Burden is the creator behind "Urban Light" which has 202 streetlamps and 309 bulbs (because some lampposts have two globes). Also, Burden credited Max Schimmel for giving him the idea. Story goes, Burden and Paul Schimmel (buddy and then Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art) were hanging out at the Rose Bowl Flea Market, and Max (Paul's son, who was 11 at the time), urged them over to come and checked out the various vintage streetlamps. Thus, this landmark installation/inception was born. There are 16 different lamppost designs from the 1920s and 1930s and so, you're bound to find a design (or more) that'll tickle your fancy. Burden's favorite lamppost pieces are called the Broadway Roses (rosebud ornament on top of the globes). You can find those in the middle row, facing inside LACMA. Also, the lightbulbs were switched from incandescent bulbs to Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs for Environmental-friendly purposes and the LED bulbs were a gift from the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation. Overall, this "Urban Light" installation landmark is definitely worth checking out if you're along Museum Row in Los Angeles. You now got some background and history. Go check it out and get some of those photo-worthy pics for yourself or reenact that "No Strings Attached" moment, heheh! P.S. If you're going for a Fred Astaire "Singin' in the Rain" moment, keep your feet on the ground and don't attempt to climb the lampposts (they got Security watching!).

Yelp
Outside of LACMA. It's an Instagrammable place. Lots of photo shoots going on. Great place to people watch.

Yelp
Whatever you may have heard from friends, co-workers, and family members about this place literature hyp??. It's sad to say with a jk but in a joyful words to say it is all true. A really awesome place to take a glimpse of it's view of wonderful architecture beauty of this amazing place in downtown Los Angeles. Plus it looks even more extravagant during the night time where all the lights adds whole outlook to this already wonderful sight to behold.

Yelp
If you're ever visiting L.A. please make a point to check out Ubran Light at LACMA. I was visiting this past week, and had the wonderful pleasure of attending "Jazz at LACMA: Angel City Jazz Festival with Johnathan Pinson Boom Clap." The jazz band was phenomenal! It was a perfect evening! I even had the opportunity to let the drummer and the piano player know, that I truly enjoyed their music! I'm so happy that my friend brought me to this fabulous event!
