The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"This much-loved specialty Bengali restaurant inhabits a pretty, vintage townhouse in a posh south Kolkata neighborhood. The setting, with its chessboard floor, ornate chandeliers, and period furniture, is reminiscent of aristocratic mansions of 19th-century Calcutta. The menu features a luxurious selection of Bengali classics like daab chingri (prawns cooked in tender, cream-laden coconut shells), kosha mangsho (dryish mutton curry), and chital macher muitha (fish dumplings in red gravy). There are also a smattering of lesser-known delicacies culled from Bengali cookbooks and the kitchens of old Calcutta’s patrician households. Well-heeled locals book tables here for celebratory meals and often bring out-of-towners for an introductory course on Bengali food." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

We have always ordered food from here as it's closest to comfort food! But today we decided to head out for lunch as a family to enjoy some good Bengali food served piping on our plates. Zomato and district apps allow for reserving a table and paying online. But this branch didn't have any booking available..it was first come first served and we got a table white easily (even though it was a Sunday afternoon around 1:30pm). They have a lovely rustic decor with two floors and a terrace opened for dining and we got a seat on the ground floor. We were 5 of us who ate al a carte and 1 who had buffet. Our bill including everything was 6.9k which was reasonable for the quality and quantity we ate. We ordered chicken in coconut curry, bhat, dal, ilish, mangsho, dhokar dalna, phulkopir roast, gondhoraj ghol, gondhoraj panna cotta, nolen gurer icecream and the full buffet! Buffet menu was similar but a lot of other things too along with complimentary luchi, starter and welcome drink. We are very well and the service was quite quick. Zomato had a 10% off that for some reason wasn't available when we wanted to pay through bill. But we were well satisfied so no problem. A must visit if you haven't already. I am eager to try their thali place too! Keep it up !

One of the finest dining places for having Authentic Bengali Cuisine. They have a number of branches all over the city. Their service is top notch. The ambience is warm and soothing. Food quality is very good. We had their buffet, and it was too good. From the starters, main course, to the dessert, everything was perfectly balanced. You can try their ala carte menu options too. The place is costly but the food is worth the price. You can surely visit with your friends and family and can throw any celebration event there.

If Kolkata’s love for Bengali cuisine had a flagship restaurant, "6 Ballygunge Place" would be it. Nestled in a quaint British-era bungalow, this restaurant is famous for serving nostalgia with a side of history — but does it live up to the hype? Well, that depends on whether you’re paying for the ambience or the actual food. Walking in, you’re greeted by colonial charm, framed pictures of Bengal’s golden past, and an aroma that promises a feast fit for a zamindar. The menu boasts all the Bengali classics — Shukto, Chingri Malai Curry, Kosha Mangsho, and Mishti Doi — but while some dishes hit the right notes, most of the others seem like they’ve lost their way in the spice bazaar. And let’s talk about the elephant in the room — the pricing. While the food aims to be "ghorer ranna" (home-style cooking), the bill makes you feel like you just funded an East India Company revival. With premium pricing, you'd expect exceptional flavors, but what you often get is "good, but not mind-blowing" food. Interesting Facts: 1. The restaurant is housed in a restored heritage mansion, adding to its old-world charm. 2. They popularized the concept of Bengali buffet dining, but at a cost that makes even fish-loving Bengalis think twice. 3. Their "Daab Chingri" (prawns in coconut shell) is legendary — when it’s made right! Verdict: Go for the heritage vibes and Bengali nostalgia, but if you're looking for value for money, your neighborhood pice hotel might serve you better!

Friends recommended this place as they had lunch and they loved it so we decided why not dinner as it was close to the guest house we lived in. Since I have a long journey the next day I decided on a simple pulav and it tasted good, the server was king enough to get a small gravy from the buffet as my dish was simple to eat. Thank you so much for your kindness as I knew I would have wasted an entire dish by ordering. Loved the ambience and the huge families sitting together and dinning. My friends enjoyed their dishes and we left with a happy stomach. Lovely vibe the restaurant gave out.

We visited 6 Ballygunge Place on a Thursday evening and were pleasantly surprised to find it not too crowded. The restaurant boasts a charming antique and aesthetic ambience, perfect for taking plenty of pictures and soaking in a touch of old-world Bengali elegance. For starters, we ordered the Fish Fry and Fish Kabiraji. While the Fish Fry was decent and lived up to expectations, the Fish Kabiraji was a disappointment—it lacked the signature flavor and richness one would typically expect from the dish. Moving on to the mains, we tried Basanti Pulao along with Daab Chingri, Kosha Mangsho, and Kacha Lonka Dhonepata Murgi, following the waiter’s recommendations. Among these, the Kosha Mangsho stood out—it was rich, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. Unfortunately, the Daab Chingri and the chicken dish failed to impress, falling short in both taste and depth of flavor. For dessert, we had the Nolen Gurer Ice Cream, and it was undoubtedly the highlight of the meal. Creamy, indulgent, and bursting with authentic jaggery flavor—it’s a must-try. Overall, 6 Ballygunge Place is a great spot if you're looking to experience authentic Bengali cuisine in a beautiful setting. However, be prepared for a hefty dent in your pockets—most items are quite overpriced considering the hit-or-miss food quality.

6 Ballygunge Place in Kolkata is a charming homage to authentic Bengali cuisine, set in a beautifully restored British‑era mansion. The décor, complete with hand‑painted murals, vintage fans, and ornate wooden furnishings, evokes a traditional zamindar household, creating an immersive and genteel atmosphere. The menu is a treasure trove of regional classics: from spicy Kosha Mangsho and buttery Daab Chingri to delicate Bhapa Ilish and zingy Aam Kasundi Chicken, each dish is prepared with care and tradition. Guests can choose from a lavish daily buffet or opt for à la carte, with many preferring the latter to fully enjoy their favorites. The courteous, knowledgeable staff enhance the experience, though weekends can be busy, reservations are recommended. Priced at around ₹1,000 for two, it offers excellent value, making it a must‑visit for lovers of Bengali gastronomy and heritage.
