Yelp
I will preface this review by stating that I have been to the slice shop down the street. It is excellent, in my opinion it has one of the best slices in New York. To compare this to that is unfair considering I feel comparing whole pies to slices, and Neapolitan style pizza to electric oven pizza is unrealistic.
The location of this pizzeria is about a 5-10 minute walk from Greenpoint Ave on the G train. Inside it looks more like a honky tonk bar meets a castle dungeon, but once I got over the dingy appearance, I was ready to eat.
In terms of the pizza, I will break down each pie in its own paragraph. The total came out to $50 for the two pies; initially my plan was to eat half of both pies and save the other half for later. I got the Regina pie and the Ricky Ricotta pie. Both pies came out quick, as Neapolitan pies often do, which helped as I was pretty hungry by this point, and was ready to eat my own hands if I had to wait any longer.
Regina: Solid plain Neapolitan pie, nothing more or less. Good tomatoes, nice use of the cheese, the crust is chewy with a bit of a char. It works well. Unfortunately, the pizza cools fast, so I had to eat this pizza fast before it is all ruined.
Ricky Ricotta: Tasty pie as well. The fennel sausage comes through nicely, the dollops of ricotta cheese are not overpowering, and the arugula helps balance the flavors to make it digestible. This crust was more on the well done side, and like the Regina pie, this pie starts to cool immediately after it is placed on the table.
Because of the quick cooling process, I was forced to redo my plan and eat both pies right on the spot, which initially I was ashamed about, until the Paulie Gee's wife came over to my table to say my experience was not uncommon.
Speaking of customer service, I would like to point out two things.
-While I did not meet Paulie Gee himself, I met his wife, and she is amazing. She is honest and confident and was thrilled I brought my business over here. She is not naive to the New York pizza game, knowing her competition, and is not afraid to stand toe to toe with them. She was an absolute pleasure to talk to.
-The very cute 20-something hostesses are awesome too, especially Rachel and Madison. While their outgoing and bubbly appearances are a welcome change from the one word answers I have gotten in the past, these two ladies deserve my praise and more. Maybe it is because they saw I was by myself and showed some pity, or perhaps this is who they are, hard workers with great charm. Like Paulie Gee's wife, I could have spent all night talking with them, but I know they have a job to do first and had to let them get to that.
Great pizza, excellent service, and a fun atmosphere to bring it all together. I am happy I spent my evening here, and hope to do it all again real soon.
