The Rise & Shine Hospitality Group seems to be playing musical chairs with its breakfast ventures. This downtown spot used to be a Fig Tree Cafe but has been converted to a venue with a more upscale flair in 6th & G Breakfast (named after the intersection where it's located). Interestingly, the ownership used to operate Gaslamp Breakfast Company a few blocks south, but that place did not last long. The interior decor was modified to reflect a fanciful bar and lounge vibe with a motto of Amor Fati (love of fate) that also happened to be the WiFi password.
The food menu was limited to one page like Breakfast Republic which is the flagship chain in the restaurant group. The categories were Specialties, Omelets/Scrambles, Benedicts, Buttermilk Waffle Pops, Pancakes, French Toast, and Sides. For drinks, the offerings featured coffee, lattes, cocktails, beer, sparkling, bloody marys, and non-alcoholic beverages like juices and lemonade. I came on a late afternoon during the final hour of business and sat on the booth side of a small table. The cushion was saggy and made me feel lower to the ground than I had expected.
I asked the waiter about the Buttermilk Waffle Pops of which there were four types. He described them as a quarter waffle in size. You could get a Sampler which was a whole waffle with each of the four flavors in a quarter section. I chose the Blueberry variety to start my meal. The waffle was served with a popsicle stick inserted into the side and a white chocolate lemon sauce coated on top and six blueberries. I did like the sweet and sour flavor of the sauce, but $5 for 1/4 of a waffle was steep.
The Chicken Anaheim Omelet was my other item. It was made up of three eggs and served with house potatoes (i.e. tater tots) and a choice of toast (wheat for me). The filling was asiago chicken fennel sausage, red onion, roasted anaheim peppers, and jack cheese. The eggs didn't taste as soft and creamy as the omelets I have eaten elsewhere. They were cooked longer and/or had more cheese which made the texture thicker than I liked. The herbal sausage was lean and savory.
The service I received was reasonable. I rated the layout and atmosphere with four stars while my food for the price was closer to three stars. With numerous breakfast options in the Gaslamp Quarter, I am curious how 6th & G Breakfast will hold up against the competition including a Breakfast Republic one block east.
