7 Portes - Review - Barceloneta - Barcelona - The Infatuation

"You can’t talk rice in Barcelona without mentioning 7 Portes, a beautifully maintained institution where little has changed since it opened in 1836. The haughty waiters still wear pressed white jackets and the faded photographs on the walls show glimpses of what Barceloneta looked like in years past. Diners range from young couples to multi-generational families who are all here to feast on rice. Some have blackened lips from the squid ink in the arroz negro, while others suck on lobster heads and slurp sauce from the mussels in the rich arroz caldoso, or soupy rice. We always go for the Paella Manolete, a zingy homage to the Catalan love of surf and turf, with butifarra sausage and shrimp. If you can’t agree on what to get, 7 Portes is one of the few places in the city that serves individual portions. photo credit: 7 Portes photo credit: 7 Portes photo credit: 7 Portes" - Isabelle Kliger

Fideuà Is Barcelona’s Best Seafood Dish - Eater

"Such is the fame of this nearly 200-year-old establishment that it might be easy to write it off as a tourist trap. But locals come for the perfectly executed Catalan classics that the kitchen continues to turn out year after year, including fideuà." - Jeff Koehler

We were recommended to this restaurant on July 5, 2025, by our local tour guide as we were looking to eat authentic Catalan food. The atmosphere of the restaurant is fine dining so we were expecting good service and fancy (and expensive) food. We made reservations and were seated promptly. There was music being played on a piano that made the ambiance quite pleasant. However, our first impressions for the waiter assigned to our table was not good. He did not make us feel welcome. Maybe because he did not understand English well, but even a smile or a pleasant facial gesture can bypass all language barriers. We were trying to ask about some of the items on the menu, but it was pointless trying as he did not know or did not want to try to find out what we were asking. We ordered from the menu without asking any more questions. He ignored us for most of the evening. The food, by the way, was excellent, 5 stars easily, the paella was tasty and plentiful. Just our service left us with a bit of a sour taste which was bittersweet for a nice dining establishment.

What can I say but excellent. The wait staff was wonderful. Atmosphere is quaint and perfect for the location. The Calamari appetizer was tender. The shrimp appetizer was so fresh 🤤. The Seafood Paella was exactly what we were looking for. So very good 😊. Josue was fantastic quick to get us what we wanted thank you for an amazing experience.

Visited on recommendation from someone who had lived in Barcelona - was not disappointed. Waiter service, with attention to detail, in a traditional surrounding. Indoor and outdoor seating available, we went for indoor to take advantage of the air conditioning! Had the paella, with calamari and a side dish of spinach - plenty for 2 people, wishing we had waived the option to have bread! Would recommend booking in advance. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend 7 Portes Restaurant in Barcelona, Spain — a must-visit, especially if you're welcoming family, friends, or loved ones visiting the city or country for the first time. This iconic restaurant is a true institution, having opened its doors in 1836! It's not just a meal; it's a cultural experience. 7 Portes has hosted countless famous guests over the centuries and you can still feel that timeless charm in the air. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was exceptional. Our waiter, Dani H., went above and beyond to make sure my family visiting from Canada felt warmly welcomed and had a beautiful introduction to both Catalan and Spanish cuisine. The food was phenomenal — rich, traditional flavors served with care and pride. The elegant, classic decor, with its tiled floors and white tablecloths, paired perfectly with the historic atmosphere of the space. And let’s not forget — on a hot summer day, the air conditioning was a lifesaver! A small touch, but deeply appreciated. Whether you're coming for the famous paella, a taste of Catalonia’s culinary heritage, or simply to soak in a bit of Barcelona’s living history, 7 Portes is the perfect place to do it.

The most special lunch in Barcelona. Superb service from Dani H. He was extremely attentive and friendly with my family. We ordered Paellas and Cavas. The food was excellent. The place is clean and the ambience is nice and classy.

Google
Perfect food, despite us being a very very large party (almost 90 people) with some special requests like halal steak and starters, everything was well catered to. The steak was perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth. The servers were super attentive. All in all a very very positive experience. Would definitely recommend and visit again. Plus it’s a legendary culinary restaurant that has maintained its class and presence.

Google
Recommend reserving a table inside in advance! But sitting outside under the arched walkway wasn't bad at all. 100% recommend the tomato salad with sardines (a seasonal dish)– it is light, punchy, and a perfect summer appetizer. The traditional paella was delicious as well, with the portions being more than generous.

Google
We went there for a dinner, order 3 different paellas and the lamb chops, it was delicious, but one paella per person it can be a bit too much. If you get some starters and get 1 paella for 2 persons it can be enough, in terms of quantity. The cream from the dessert its not the best but overall the experience was very nice so the food. We had a reservation, made online a few days before and we had a table outside, it was very cozy.

Yelp
7 Portes hosted us for a bachelorette dinner on our first full night in Spain and it was pretty good. Our dinner reservation was at 21:30 and like all Spanish/Catalonian meals, we didn't leave until close to midnight. They are known for their large portions of paella here so I was glad to see there was a vegan-friendly one with a medley of veggies including aubergine. My friend and I were able to split their House Salad (€11,50) and just one portion of paella (€20,50), which was honestly perfect for the two of us. The salad was fresh with excellent tomatoes but we found the paella to definitely be on the saltier side. I think I enjoyed the salad more at the end of the day. Ask for oil and balsamic on the side - otherwise they pour a LOT on top of your greens. Service here was pretty good and our waiter took good care of us. With a large group, we dined at our own little corner so it felt like a private room at the end of the day. Food overall was fine but nothing mind blowing. Fun fact: we apparently ate at the same table that Harrison Ford once dined. Must be why they consider themselves to be a popular restaurant in Barcelona.

Yelp
Best meal we had in Barcelona so far. Great seafood, very fresh and perfectly cooked. Side veggies were amazing. Implacable service and highly personalized. Very charming and classy restaurant. A bit pricey but certainly well worth it.

Yelp
Food and service were excellent. The atmosphere was subdued but cool. The paella was delicious as was the sangrias we had.

Yelp
We had early dinner reservations at 7 Portes since we had a bar booking later that night. We arrived around 4:45pm for our 5:00pm reservation and they were able to sit us early. To start, we had an order of the seasonal mushroom croquettes. They were quite good - very crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. We had 2 portions of their lobster and seafood paella. This was fine, but nothing earth shattering or something that I felt like I needed to write home about. For dessert, we had the crema catalana, which was really nice and our first time actually having it in Barcelona. Service as very friendly and attentive. All in all, I thought it was a fine meal. I'm not sure I would recommend this meal to anyone who is asking for recommendations.

Yelp
October 7, 2023. Saturday. 11:00 PM. Dinner. I made reservations for this restaurant over a month in advance. This would be our first meal in Spain and I wanted it to be special. We had booked a flamenco show at Tablao Flamenco Cordobes at 9:00 PM, before this meal. However, due to flight delays, we had to reschedule our flamenco show for another day. By the way, if you are in Barcelona, it is well worth seeing this flamenco show! We barely made our reservation to 7 Portes due to there being several hotels with similar names. Needless to say, we showed up at the front desk of 7 Portes with luggage in tow. The host accommodated us, locked up our luggage and sat us immediately. Our waiter, Sebastian, gave us a tour of the upstairs. This had a special private room for two overlooking the outdoor seating area and several group rooms. This place has been in business for over 120 years and the marble tiles, impeccable service and attention to detail tell why. We ordered Paella Parellada (26.50 euros), Paella Manolete (25.50 euros), a bottle of Pago de Carraovejas red wine (60.50 euros), water without gas (3.60 euros), and my wife had flan (7.70 euros). The waiter recommended the red wine. They charged for the bread (2.80 euros) they brought us, but so do all restaurants across Europe. The wine paired beautifully with the two paellas. Of the two paellas, we both enjoyed the Parellada paella more, it contained: chicken, pork loin, squid, Catalan sausage, king prawn, mussels and half a lobster tail. The Manolete has: chicken, sausage, pork loin, cuttlefish, king prawns, mussels and crayfish. The meat and seafood were not overly abundant, but they weren't too skimpy either. They brought generous portions of bread and butter. I liked the nice touch of listing a famous person that had previously sat at our table in the bill. Our famous person was the Italian writer, Andrea Camilleri, who died in 2019. This beautiful, ancient restaurant does indeed have 7 doors, clean bathrooms and outstanding service. Make sure to make a reservation in advance. Although the outdoor seating was nice, I'm glad we choose to eat indoors because we experienced more of the tradition of the restaurant.

Yelp
The paella was excellent but so gigantic and overpriced. I ate 1/3 of it despite there being 5 of us. Had snails for the first time. They were cold and in the shell, so they were hard to get out. Not my cup of tea. I'd rather try French escargot for the first time The live pianist played classics Imagine, Here Comes the Sun, and Frank Sinatra

Yelp
They get a five, food was delicious, croquetas amazing, The paella Catalan style was delicious, fresh seafood. Our server Carlos was fantastic attentive, knowledgeable And so pleasant, made great suggestions. If ever in Barcelona a must go.

Yelp
More of a tourist trap, but 7 Portes isn't bad either. The paella isn't the best in Barcelona, but still solid. The appetizers are decent as well.

Yelp
Set Portes is supposed to be "the place" to go in Barcelona. It's not that good. Service was very mediocre. We felt we were inconveniencing the lead waiter. Food was okay. Tried both the traditional paella and the fish paella. It was okay. I did think the Catalan style spinach side dish was well prepared. We are from Washington, DC which has La Taberna del Alabardero which is truly the best Spanish restaurant in the world. Go there instead - much more attentive service. Set Portes was a huge disappointment. The best part of the ambiance is the piano player. He was quite good when you walk in. I would not recommend this restaurant. It was lack luster.

Yelp
This place needs more 1 star reviews. We came here our second to last night in Barcelona after over a week of wonderful food and restaurant service. Had we gone on our first night we probably would have enjoyed it more but after 8 days of authentic Spanish cooking, coming here felt like a tourist trap. Do I think that a famous person has sat in every one of those seats? No! Was the entire restaurant only filled with American tourists? Yes! Paella was the worst we had this week. If we had had it in the states people would review this place as unauthentic. the prices are horrible and raised higher than other places because you are paying a "tourist tax". it was the most expensive ticket we had whole trip. if you haven't never traveled to Europe and Barcelona is your first stop/trip. I'd recommend going here. The atmosphere is catered to tourists and Americans so it's a nice first stop to dip your toes in before getting a little more adventurous/authentic. And as other people have mentioned the ambiance is nice.

Yelp
My husband and I travelled for the first time with our 7 month old infant and his parents (back up babysitters!) to Barcelona for a week to attend a wedding in Montbui, sightsee all the attractions, but mainly EAT all the delicious foods in the area!! 7 Portes was recommended on our friend's wedding website as a good sit-down place for paella. I was excited that there was an option to make reservations through theFork so I happily made it for our last night prior to our departure the next morning. Unfortunately, during the day of the reservation, the in-laws were not feeling so great so they decided to stay in and watch the baby and my husband and I would go on a romantic date and bring back food for them. We arrived right on time for our reservation at 630pm and informed them that unfortunately, there was only 2 of us instead of 4 adults + baby. I can see the hostess whispering back and forth to the host and that, my friend, is when everything started to go downhill. We were lead to the back corner area and sat in what we found to be the "American" corner as there was a large group of loud, obnoxious, Americans behind us. Our server did not come to greet us until 10 minutes after we sat down. We ordered the steamed vegetables for the appetizers, the vegetable & meat paella for the main dish, and decided to split a bottle of wine for dinner as this was our last night. It took nearly 20 minutes for the server to come back to our table with wine and another 10 minutes for our "steamed" vegetables to arrive. I attached a photo to this review as the vegetables came out COLD and drenched in OIL. My husband and I decided to just let it go and was thinking maybe its our fault for trying to order steamed veggies as an appetizer (seriously... that was my husband trying to be healthy LOL). Then, 20 minutes later.. our paella finally arrives and we were both starving and ready to dig in! Sadly, we were both so shocked and disappointed to find that they made the wrong paella! They brought out vegetable only paella when we wanted the vegetable & meat paella!! We told our waiter this and he tried to argue with us that we only ordered vegetable only. It was totally ridiculous as I heard my husband order it loud and clear. The server then left and ignored us for the next 15 minutes. It was so unprofessional and we were shocked that we were receiving such horrible treatment at what seemed a "fine dining" establishment. Finally, a manager came who was dressed in black, came to see us and we explained the situation. I think it was shift change as a new server arrived too who was updated about our situation as well. We pretty much told them we wanted the Traditional Paella to go for the parents and then to pay the bill for our appetizer and wine (we didn't touch the paella). The manager and new server wanted to "do us right" and told us to choose a quick cooking item (basically non-paella item) and they will make sure we enjoy our dinner. Both of my husband and I really wanted to bounce but decided to give them another chance since we had a new server who seemed eager to make us happy. We decided to stay and ordered the Cannelloni to share. The dish came out quick but it was was just overwhelmingly bland and nothing to write home about. After everything, we received the bill and saw that they didn't comp us the cannelloni that they tried to "make up" for our bad experience and even tried to charge us extra for the bread that we didn't even touch!! I was beyond furious. It was such a horrible experience from start to beginning. What was meant to be a nice last meal in Barcelona was just a horrible experience that left a bad taste in our mouths. I would not recommend this place even to my worst enemy.

Yelp
Came here because it was touted to have the best paella, but meh.. hard pass. The paella was soggy and lacking flavor, which was a big disappointment. We had the grilled mushrooms and the octopus, both were good but not wow. Service is extremely slow and prices are on the high side. You can definitely get way better food elsewhere.

Yelp
Super yummy spot for paella in Barcelona! Definitely need a reservation for this restaurant as it gets very busy. The vibe in the restaurant is old timey and high scale at the same time, there are even names on the walls of famous people who have eaten at the restaurant. We ordered the sangria pitcher (it was very big, filled more than 5 glasses) and that was great. The bread was nice and fluffy too. For our meal we ordered the traditional paella with lobster....YUM! It was filled with chicken, mussels, lobster, scallops, so much goodness. The serving for 3 could have easily served 4 people. For 3 people to eat, the cost was about $127 including tip. The only downside was that the server was not very attentive and it took us a long time to get his attention at the end of our meal. Loved the paella though!

Yelp
Food here is 3 stars ... average. Atmosphere is 5 stars. So that averages to 4 stars. If you are coming for the Paella (as we did) ... know that its nothing to write home about. It wasn't bad but didn't taste like anything I hadn't had before at any other Spanish restaurant. In fact, to me it tasted like a less salty/soy sauce version of Chinese pork fried rice. The fish dishes are what stood out here. There are small pin bones in a lot of the fish, we noticed. Nothing will ruin a vacation like a swallowed pin bone ... so proceed with caution. You could tell whomever portioned the fish knew what they were doing and it was incredibly fresh tasting. Lots of olive oil. The atmosphere here was our favorite part. There was a piano player and felt a lot like Harry's Bar in Venice ... upscale with waiters in white coats. We found everyone to be very friendly. The host (in a black coat) helped us get a perfect table to watch the piano player, despite initially being placed in a back (overflow) room ... which was nice but not the same vibe. This has a classic vibe ... you could imagine Hemingway or Picasso strolling in. There are little gold placards on the back of the booths indicating what famous person sat there. Picasso ... Dali ... The Queen of Spain. If it is your first time, the waiters will give you a little history speech. You can also sit outside, which has a nice vibe. I was shocked and dismayed to see the great number of Americans and Brits dining in logo t-shirts, athletic shorts, sneakers and sandals. I cannot even fathom walking into a place this classy looking like I just went on a jog. Frankly, it brings down the experience for everyone else when the dining room's white jacketed waiters walk around patrons wearing clothing that high school students would wear. It was really annoying ... not the restaurant's fault but society now has a rule that people do whatever the fuck they want at any time. Overall, I'd say this is overrated for Paella. But ... its a classic that youbwon't regret spending an evening at. The house wines were 4 Euro per glass and dinner for two with drinks and bottled water came to around 90 Euro with tip. Very nice!

Yelp
For the service and atmosphere I want to add another star. We were seated outside, speaking strictly about food, so I'll leave my rating as is. The waiter was great, very hard working and juggling the 6 tables with patrons outside. They provided heaters that really did the trick for the evening chill. Catalan style spinach with roasted pine nuts and raisins. Hear me out, it was very thoughtfully prepared. Clearly made to serve. The pine nuts were fresh and the raisins were gentle without excessive sweetness. Romaine salad was super generously portioned. Definitely focused on the grandeur of the plating rather than the edibility. It was served plain, but each table was given house olive oil and balsamic. Both were good! Paella seemed to be the star of the restaurant but we weren't too impressed with the seafood being over cooked. The rice itself was great not over cooked and nicely balanced with saffron and bay leaf. Definitely sharable despite it being sold as a portion. Tip: get a reservation, order a few things to share. Worth the try, but maybe we were there on a busy day and the paella suffered.

Yelp
Food was flavorless we didn't even eat the steak it came out raw after waiting an hour and ten minutes! Literally do not recommend. They even charged us full price and we didn't eat more than 1 bite

Yelp
Ambiance?? -- even with locally made reservations, we -2- were given a small table back in the corner of a back room. Fortunately --despite being panned on several Yelp reviews, the service was pretty much immediate and continually good !! We were tho fortunately cautious about their touted Paella, so instead opted for -2- chilled seafood offerings --including the seafood platter "for -2-" that a remarkable feed --a HUGE variety offered in just surprising generous quantities, starting with a full chilled lobster, add 6 fresh shucked raw oysters, 2 varieties of chilled steamed clams, 2 more varieties of chilled prawns AND at least a full dozen of chilled (cooked) cockle snails that you dug out intact from behind their still in place trapdoors. All served with olives, great bread and Catalonia produced wonderful Tempranillo wine, followed by great deserts and expresso. Re the paella being grumped about, a truly knowledgable local offered an explanation / NOT justification the there is likely a cultural difference between the expectation of the 'versions' that are served 'back home' that might typically more moist and more packed with seafood, whereas that which is served is likely a truly local version that per the local cultural and cooking style is less moist and less 'bountiful'. I'm thinking that is likely true, making MY choice and MY Wife's choice of the more focused selections of primarily fresh cooked seafood for us the better selections. We'd return in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Excelente comida y servicio. El personal fue muy atento y los platos bien presentados...!!!

Yelp
7 Portes has a huge menu, but I think their best item is the paella. Although their traditional paella is known to have received awards, we got their seafood paella because we like seafood. The rice is perfectly al dente, not mushy or undercooked. There is a nice burnt crust on the bottom which I love. The flavors are cooked into each rice grain. This is something that I can eat over and over again. We also got a few other dishes that seemed mediocre. The appetizer sampler is a good way to share between two people, but they are items widely available in the rest of Barcelona and Spain. We ordered a "special" fish that was baked in a salt crust. Once the waitstaff removed all the salt crust, skin, and bones, the remaining fish was minimal...and it didn't taste like anything "special" (1 star off). For dessert, I ordered a mandarin and cava sorbet, but it lacked any cava taste (1 star off). This is a family-friendly restaurant with customers of all ages -- from babies to old seniors. There are large tables, so it's good for large groups. If you are looking for a classic Catalan restaurant, this is a good choice, especially if you like paella. If you are looking for something more innovative, you should walk through other portes.

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service to tourists! We made a reservation, and were quickly seated outside. One thing to note for tourists: it's very difficult to get tap water served to you. More likely than not, you will be given bottled water that is around two euros. The croquettes are a star! Super crispy on the outside, filled with soft, creamy potato and cheese on the inside, you can't get enough of these. The seafood paella is superb! A serving of four really will feed a group of four for two meals. The lobster tail is tender and lightly seasoned, not too heavy. The rice is flavored very deeply; there are many nuances to the rice that will keep you coming back with your plate. It is a little heavy, but that is usually all paella. The rataouille is delicious! Light, well seasoned, and filled with veggies, it is a welcome reprieve from the heaviness of paella and croquettes. Overall, a delicious introduction to Barcelona.

Yelp
I was in Barcelona recently, and I wanted a good paella at a spot away from La Rambla. As many of the restaurants on La Rambla are somewhat tourist traps, and don't serve authentic paellas, I wanted to get away from the main strip. Initially, I wanted to go to Mana 75, but they had no availability for walk-ins, so I found that 7 Portes was another spot for good paella in Barcelona. I had the traditional paella with a half lobster tail, and the paella was tasty. It was flavorful and included that nice crust around the edges that I like. The texture was sauce-like almost like a risotto, and it had the lovely color of the saffron used in paella. However, the paella did seem a little flat, not in terms of flavor, but overall appearance and texture. It seems like many of the ingredients may have cooked into the paella, so it didn't have depth of appearance. The outside terrace was a nice place to sit. Though, it is recessed, so you can't see what's happening on the street, which can be a good and bad thing. The restaurant doesn't sell cocktails, so you're only options for drinks are basically water and wine. Individual glasses of wine were about 4 to 7 euros, so the prices for drinks were reasonable.

Yelp
Despite the struggle of a vegan and a meat lover traveling through Barcelona trying to find a paella to their tastes, my friend and I succeeded in finding this gem!! Paella comes in a single serving, a rarity in itself, and has a vegan option to boot! I loved my traditional paella, and my friend said that it was the best paella she'd ever been able to eat as a vegan! Our server was fantastic and we took his wine recommendation, which was both inexpensive and paired nicely with the paella. The inside was beautiful, as well. Great option for groups with different tastes, or that want to sample on different paella's rather than order one for everybody.

Yelp
Tourist trap! Upon entering the restaurant the manager could not find my reservation in his system I had an email confirmation that I showed him but maitre d' assisting the reception host was still in disbelief Restaurant was empty and remained rather empty in all the time I was there so I don't understand the fuss he displayed when he couldn't find my Rez that I had made in advance, the restaurant was in no way selling out or overbooked for the evening Food was lackluster and not memorable except for being highly oversalted. They put in a good show here but that's all since the food was not good at all

Yelp
If you are a paella fan, this might be your place. Fine dining setting with flies all over inside the restaurant. The food was eh. Highly recommended by several people so it could be our under developed palates. Our most expensive and least favorite meal.

Yelp
As cool as it is to eat at a 185 year old restaurant, and to sit at the same table Salvador Dali sat at (supposedly), we had a few challenges. The food varied from OK to outstanding. The steak in particular was excellent. We had their tapas for 2 starter. While interesting, it didn't blow my mind. The jamón and melón appetizer was good. We also had the cannoli (good), various seafood plate (I didn't taste, but looked good) and a paella which was too fishy for me. Finally we had some espressos and a crème brûlée. My decaf espresso was rather sad, but it served its purpose together with a solid crème brûlée. Our main problem was the service. They were pleasant enough, but we often seemed forgotten. We waited a half hour before they took our order. We had bread and some olives but no drinks. The bread was served plain with no oil or other things to dip. It was relatively fresh, but dry when you have nothing to No with it and no drinks. Food and drinks came out relatively quickly after they finally took our orders, but it still seemed like we had to work to get the wait staffs attention. As we were leaving after a i noticed the vacant stare of another table of five with bread, untouched, no drinks presumable just wanting to place their order. Overall it was a good experience, but at the price (which is at least double what we've found elsewhere for equivalent food) I expect better service. I should note this isn't a great place for kids. They were nothing but polite, but there are no options for kids on the menu and the waiter didn't seem to know what to do with our kid for drinks. They almost put out five one glasses for the five of us including my underaged son. I looked the best day and the side explicitly says it's a restaurant for adults. Overall it was fine, and out kid enjoyed himself because he's an adventurous eater, but be aware it might be challenging for kids.

Yelp
Couldn't be more disappointed. The front desk supervisor of the Eurostars Grand Mariner hotel recommended this place for an authentic first time Spain non touristy dining experience. Therefore we took a 17 Euro taxi (plus tip) to this restaurant at 5:00PM. There were approx 20 available tables outdoors and approx 15 tables available indoors. The woman who greeted us asked of we had reservations (which the front desk supervisor mentioned nothing about any mandatory/must call ahead for a reservation - especially at 5:00PM! The woman at the front greeting desk then looked over to the manager/maitre d' (gentleman in black tux) and spoke in Spanish if we could be seated without a reservation and his response (WITHOUT common courtesy of even looking up to us ) was "no". In shock, in the middle of an unknown town and country, I thought if I typed in a google translate app how one of the managers from a well know and upscale hotel recommended this place and mentioned nothing about making a reservation, that perhaps he would change his tune/massive attitude. He (still never looking up or at me (so wrong on so many levels of customer service), told the woman to seat us outside. At this point we would be thankful for a table regardless of how hot it was outside. She then proceeded to sit us right in the entryway, mind you their were 20 other unoccupied tables outdoors. Walked out, wouldn't you?

Yelp
I know this is one of the oldest restaurants in Barcelona but it really is a tourist trap. The food wasn't bad but it was the most expensive meal we had during our 10 day trip to Portugal/Spain and the food was just mediocre. So many other options for a lot less money with much better food.

Yelp
Absolutely horrible service. Waited 20 min for a waiter. When we inquired about our drinks we were greeted with an attitude. Then another waiter was assigned to our table. He was even more clueless than the first. Stay away from this place. Not worth spending your money here.

Yelp
Good food but there are so many GREAT restaurants in Barcelona. Service was adequate, not bad not great. We had fun but likely won't dine here again.

Yelp
Great service, and amazing tenderloin. The only complaint I have is that they charge you are everything- nothing is complementary. Great stop if youre in the city.

Yelp
Great quality food. We showed up on a Saturday night, with no reservation, and were seated within 30-40 minutes. Considering the taste, atmosphere, and all the great reviews... I'd say we were very lucky. Must visit!

Yelp
I assked Eduardo from Kimpton Vividora for a great Paella and Ed called and made lunch reservations for two at 7 Portes. This place blew me away with great ambiance and hospitality. Our Server brought over their house Sangria and followed this up with their house Paella. One of the best dishes I have ever had and I will return when I come back to Barcelona.

Yelp
After spending the afternoon on a Catamaran (Friday August 5), my wife and I were walking towards the beach but heard thunder. We changed course and started walking back to our hotel, and then it began to storm. Since this was the closest restaurant and it was dinner time, we stopped in. Since we are visiting from the United States, we both were in the mood for authentic paella. Therefore, we ordered the one with meat and vegetables (20,50 euros X 2). Although I've only had paella once before (almost a week prior in a hot-as-an-oven hole-in-a-wall restaurant in Toledo), this one was better! My gripe was after ordering, we were given bread. The bread was ok. However, when the check came, I discovered they charged us 5,50 for it. We weren't asked ahead of time if we wanted it. Had I'd known it wasn't complementary, let alone 5,50, I would've requested they take the bread away immediately! Otherwise, the food and customer service was good.

Yelp
I don't know how anyone could rate 7 Portes lower than 4 or 5 stars! Everything I come to Barcelona, and that typically is once a year, I try to gather with friends for a celebratory dinner at this fabulous Catalán Restaurant. Having missed my trip for the last two years due to the COVID pandemic, this year I was able to return. We had a fabulous dinner. I'll include a few photos. I highly recommend 7 Portes!

Yelp
We came here as our Airbnb host listed it as the best paella in town. I hope that is not the case. The paella was mediocre at best. Too salty and the seafood was over cooked. On the other hand the spinach appetizer was very tasty. Service was very slow. This is a tourist place. Not horrible but I would not recommend it. The ambiance is nice. White tablecloth, waiters in white coat and live piano partially made up for the lack of cooking.

Yelp
Service was bad, over priced based on what you get, we were charged for a $50 bottle of wine that we didn't order. We ordered a starter/appetizer that we never got. However the person playing the piano was amazing!

Yelp
***3.5 Stars*** On my quest to find some of the best Paella in Barcelona, I would definitely put 7 Portes up there. Before we had the Paella, we started with the starters plate - which was pretty good for what it was, but I realize I could have done without it. The main star of the starters was the seafood dishes rather than the croquetas or more meatcentric dishes. Like many places, the paella is charged based on the servings per person. Since my mate and I ordered a Paella Parellada for two with seafood and meat, it was about €46 (23 per person). The consistency of the rice was a little more al dente for my liking, but the flavor and quality of the ingredients was one of the best. in terms of the overall experience, the wait for this place (I went on a Thursday at 8 pm and had to wait an hour) can be an hour or more during dinner time. I was kind of annoyed to wait that long and then seated in one of the areas with so much open seating. There was so many empty tables even by the time we left. Maybe they do this for quality of service, but the service was not even that amazing to be fair. Their wine selection is pretty good and the overall ambiance seems very fancy, but not too pretentious. I would highly suggest here if you want a more sit down type of dinner!

Yelp
We came to this restaurant upon it being highly recommended. Ordered sangria which I thought was awful compared to others I had in town. The mussels appetizer was good but bland. We ordered two different paella meals, the traditional and veggies with meat. Both were underwhelming and had too much broth with not enough rice to soak it up. The only good part of the meal was the blueberry ice cream we had for dessert. Overall, the meal was super expensive and I'd recommend going anywhere else.

Yelp
The service was outstanding and the food was incredible. The table was a little crammed in the corner but our server definitely made up for it. I am a tourist visiting and definitely recommend this restaurant for your Barcelona experience. To reiterate the food was delicious!

Yelp
Been in Barcelona for about a week and dined in restaurants big and small, this is unfortunately the worst dining experience. The location and the building itself are nice. Inside of the restaurant, if you sit in the front room it's good but if you're led to any of the side rooms it's pretty average. Service was very very poor. It took a long time for everything. (Including getting the bill) Our dinner time was 19:30 so it was busy but not prime time (people in Spain eats dinner much later). Countless issues with our dinner. Here is the list: 1. We were charged 2 euro for bread that we didn't ask for. 2. Server gave us a wrong dish that we didn't order and tried to cover up the mistake by substituting it with an sangria order we later added. Basically, he didn't add the sangria order to our official order. When the final bill came He manually crossed off the wrong dish on our bill with a pen and said that dish was replaced by sangria. (See attached picture). The problem is that we ordered a small sangria that should've cost around 12 euro. He basically charged us 23 euro for the sangria when he did the manual substitution. (The wrong order was a dish for 23 euro). This is unethical. We were upset that we didn't catch it on the spot. the server could've just deleted the wrong item from the bill and charged us the sangria separately to keep everything clean). 3. Drink menu was not offered with food menu. We had to asked a few times for it. 4. Server gave us Spanish and French menu for dessert despite knowing we need English menu. 5. This is a little mean to say but the server had bad body odor and it was unpleasant. Overall bad attention to many details. Although not customary, I gave some tip to all my meals while in town. This is the only place I didn't tip and, I wish I could give negative tip for a dinner ruined. We had the opportunity to go somewhere else to spend our last night in Barcelona and we picked the wrong place. Food itself was ok. I wouldn't say it's bad but after having so many amazing food in town, it's hard to understand why some people think that this is one of the best in town. It's good but just not unique in any way. Competition in Barcelona is pretty tough.

Yelp
We came here upon recommendations from our food tour guide. It had nice ambience and it seemed like a high class restaurant. We ordered 2 different the paella. It was pretty good but quite expensive. Service was not too good and not very attentive.

Yelp
Disclosure: dining here has great emotional freight for me, as my family dined here a few years ago with wonderful friends, and the memories are very pleasant. I arrived alone, about 6.15 pm, with no reservation, in beat-up Carhartt T-shirt and fatigues, with cameras and pack on my back (I'm a photographer.) I approached the hostess and diffidently asked for a table for 1, expecting to be turned away on my looks alone. Though --disclosure -- I did say I'd last sat at the Salvador Dali table when I was last there, which was true.) She offered me either inside or outside table. I chose the lovely, breezy patio. The waiter treated me as though I wore a thousand -dollar suit: explained the menu, offered the usual starters of gas-water, olives, bread, oil, and balsamic. I felt welcomed, respected, and accepted. I chose olives, a Catalan starter of bread, tomatoes, and anchovies, and a seafood paella, with a dry white wine. The anchovies were fine, spread like butter, and went well with the tomatoes. The paella also was excellent (as was the table-side pan service), with copious shellfish. I then spent an hour talking and drinking delightful sangria with the couple at the next table. This is a high-end place that in my experience treats you well; has excellent food and service; and knows how to give even a tattered-looking ruffian excellent food and a very pleasant evening. Go there, spend time, and enjoy.

Yelp
Food was excellent and the service was phenomenal. Definitely get dessert when you go.

Yelp
Our experience was a huge disappointment. We ordered the seafood paella and the one with the meat and vegetables. The seafood paella was so salty and fishy ( the flavor you get when seafood isn't fresh ) , it was barely edible. The lobster tail was tiny and there was 1 shrimp in whole paella -both were rubbery and overcooked. My husband's meat and vegetables paella had very little meat and no flavor. We were also charged for bread and olive oil we didn't order. The server didn't ask. We had reservations and arrived early. Restaurant was not busy but was told by the woman at the front to go away and come back later. Don't know why people like this place-perhaps because it's been there a long time.

Yelp
Friend and I weren't dressed nice enough to be seated in the front of restaurant lol. Jokingly said they're taking us to the back room cause we dress casual for vacation. Got to the back and that was the reality . Food was great. The seafood platter was so fresh, most are in Barcelona. The mussels were as soft as clams (I don't even like mussels, too tough usually). Pallea was also good. Pricier place, but they do not cheap out on quality.

Anne K.

Yelp
The Lobster was fishy and almost tasted spoiled. The cod was extremely fishy smelling and again tasted off. The paella was almost inedible. The bread was wet and soggy, as well as the grilled vegetables. The vegetables were basically pulverized and mush. The olives they served us tasted old, Dry and spoiled. We paid 128 euros and the waiter wanted an extra tip. The whole experience here was distasteful to us and we were extremely disappointed with the food quality. Will never come here again.
