As the plaque at the site states, the house, a Designated New York City Landmark, was built around 1807 by sailmaker John P. Roome. There are few homes as old as this one still standing in NYC. Around the corner on Commerce Street, which was first called Cherry Lane, there are three more homes from the 1820s built in the federal style at 24, 26, and 28. I cannot speak for the veracity of it but check out the Daytonian blog on the John P. Roome house to see that it has had many different looks over the years before finally being returned to something along the lines of what it originally looked like.
