A Brazilian-Style Coffee Bar Opens in LA’s Chinatown - Eater LA

"SPLA brings Brazilian-style specialty coffee to Downtown Los Angeles in conjunction with Nossa Familia. It serves traditional drinks like 'cafezinho' and 'batida,' and offers small bites like pão de queijo. The coffee beans are sourced from Miami's Panther Coffee." - Matthew Kang

Yelp
Small, fun coffee spot located in what feels like the edge of Chinatown in DTLA. This place came up on my radar because I was looking up for a pick me up and a place to post up to do a little work. The person I ordered from was very friendly and helpful in figuring out what I wanted. This place also has a room that is bright and very calming relaxing to be in! I really liked enjoying my beverage here. I ended up getting the Sabotage which was basically a latte. Very tasty and beautifully presented. Definitely a great spot for coffee and a great spot to be at. Parking felt pretty easy to find. But also just know I was there in the middle of the day.

Yelp
I had some downtime in between meetings and found this gem ! Brazilian coffee shop, easy metered street parking. Ordering was super easy at their outdoor table in front of the coffee shop. There were so many delicious options, I can't wait to come back and try more! I had the sabotage and the spices they put with the espresso really came through in the latte! The baristas were very kind, helpful, and made a great vibe for the spot. The work area was really nice and spacious, a few outlets, different types of seating areas, and the bathroom was really cool! I know that sounds wild, but the decor and paint job in there is vibrant and pleasantly surprising. Will def be back

Yelp
Best Brazilian coffee shop in town! I wouldn't call myself a coffee connoisseur, but I do like my coffee strong, rich, and not too sweet. Their specialty coffees are made with two shots of espresso and light on sweeteners, so you can still taste the flavors of the beans. I got the Saúde Latte (hot) and absolutely loved it! With a subtle hint of orange and cinnamon, everything blended together so smoothly. My friends got the Sabotage (iced), and that was more like a mocha, but also not too sweet. That's their fave. They ran out of the pão de queijo (Brazilian cheese bread), so I got the blueberry scone. I usually eat half a pastry and save the half for later, but this scone was so soft and buttery, I couldn't resist devouring it all at once! I forget the name of the French bakery they get them from down the street. While waiting for the coffee, we sat inside and reveled in the adorably furnished room with colorful pillows and plants. Even the bathroom is cute and pink! The baristas were incredibly nice and made great recommendations! I will be back when I'm in the area!!

Yelp
Got the Batida, Sabotage iced, the cheese balls with jam & the danish. Everything was amazing from the coffee, to pastries, to the customer service! 10/10 recommend

Yelp
This is a small coffee spot with another spot 8 minutes away. Tried the bourbon cold brew which was really good. My buddy had sabotage which I had a sip of, which is usually the type of coffee I get. We had the cheese bites with jam which were delicious. Went well with the coffee. I want to visit the DTLA location next and try a different item on the menu.

Yelp
One of our favorite coffee shops in the area. Located in a super convenient location with lots of street parking, this coffee shop is always great and consistent. The oat milk latte is fantastic and the baked goods are equally great. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Meu Povo, Preste Atenção/ My People, Pay Attention: This is THE best coffee I have ever had the privilege and honor to try. Half of the ownership is Brazilian while the other half loves Brazil enough to make it complete. When I tell you this is the face of coffee, believe me. The team works diligently and meticulously on sourcing the most quality beans and flavors by frequent trips to Brazil and it shows. They have special anaerobic coffees that have flavors and create experiences like no other. Best drip coffee I have ever had HANDS DOWN. The staff are always so kind, so knowledgeable and the community built around this location is full of Passionate Coffee Lovers who are LOYAL! I live in the Bay now but am a proud born and raise LA giiirl who will visit Aquarela every single day I am in LA (lucky for me my brother lives a stones throw away from them) and tell every single person I know who visits LA to DROP INTO THIS CAFE. There really is nothing like Aquarela. If you're less into pour overs their cappuccinos are EXCELLENT, and my brother loves their drink called "sabotage". They have smoothies for my non caffeinated cuties and on the weekends they have "Pão de queijo" traditional Brazilan cheese bread and "Coxinhas" Brazilian chicken croquettes. Brazilians and Non Brazilian alike LOVE this place. But as a Brazilian I am particularly fond of and proud of our people for showcasing the best of what we got. Obrigada Aquarela.

Yelp
Found this cute coffee shop 3 min away from our airbnb. So glad we did because their chai latte was exactly what I needed in my life ‍ spiced perfectly and not too sweet just how I loveeeee it !

Yelp
Really cute coffee spot. Ambiance is peaceful. Service is professional and kind. I didn't try a specialty drink, I had a latte but I saw they had a unique menu so def planning to try next time

Yelp
We were craving for something different. My fellow yelper found this place! Nice walk from the church (Cathedral of Angels on Temple). They weren't busy and there were a few open spots to sit at outside. We pulled together two tables while we waited for our order. Order came pretty quickly. I loved my drink. Not enough caffeine compared to the latte that someone else ordered, but still very good and tasty. The cheese bread with the guava jelly was very good. I preferred to eat the cheese bread without the guava jelly. One little cheese bread definitely wasn't enough. Kind of pricey, but no regrets. Spent about $30 for three drinks, three cheese breads, and two other pastries.

Yelp
This is a Brazilian coffee shop. I was able to find street parking, and there's some outdoor seating. I ordered their matcha latte with oat milk. I asked for it without honey, and it was perfect. One of the best matchas I've had in awhile.

Yelp
I am actually leaning toward 3 stars but service was great. Originally, I decided on this place was because the online ordering showed some kind of pumpkin spice egg nogg latte. I am a fan of pumpkin spice so I wanted to try it. Arrived and did street parking right in front. Right when I stepped out of the car, I was greeted ( : I didn't see the pumpkin latte on the menu so I asked and the girl said it was an old menu. Menu should be updated esp. when providing online orders to prevent cancellation and etc. I really didn't know what else to order because I am not a fan of condense milk in coffee but seemed like most of em had it. Also, I didn't wanted to order the popular sabotage latte because I don't like chocolate in my coffee. Oh and because it comes with condense milk as well. So I was recommended the Saude latte. It had a citrus taste with cinnamon. Also, was recommended to get it hot. I thought it tasted ok. Not worth $7 something. The cinnamon and citrus taste was not strong enough and the coffee was a bit weak. The mochi cheese bread was very simple. I have tried something similar and better so nothing to wow about. It was $4 something for 3 small pieces w/jam. The jam made it a bit more tasty. Also, a new batch just came out so it was warm and fresh which made it good. Overall, I am not a fan. It's near Chinatown so to me it was pretty pricey since there was nothing special about the latte. I noticed that previously, their menu had prices for the items. What I also noticed was the price already went up due to pandemic or whatever reasons so it was understandable. However, when the menu got updated again just about 3 months ago, they no longer put the price. And of course, it was because they raised the price again. So without putting any prices up, it means they can just change the price whenever they want. Prob will up the price again in the upcoming months. I get it that prices of things are more expensive and businesses needs to go with the flow. However, raising the price every few months to the point, a drink is more expensive than food is ridiculous!!! This is not good and for this reason, I won't be coming back.

Yelp
Service was exceptional. Coffee was delightful. I love this spot as it is easy to access on the road. A great spot for a Los Angeleno.

Yelp
This place is great. The coffee is good. The beans they sell are fresh and great. The pastries are good. There's seating. There's parking. The people who work here are super nice and remember regular customers' orders. No notes. It's perfect. Go.

Yelp
Food is amazing ! Service is spectacular ambiance is relaxing and seating is quaint Food is amazing ! Service is spectacular ambiance is relaxing and seating is quaint. Employees very. Friendly and treat you as a family. There is an upstairs area that is for bigger crowds and a coffee tasting area to get familiar with different taste and brands.

Yelp
Wow. Wow. Wow. I can't believe I found this place. Absolutely fantastic! I was blessed to be able to spend the three weeks in Brazil a number of years ago and coming into this place. Brought it all back to me. The owner is Brazilian and spends a lot of time in the country working with coffee farmers. Both the owner and barista were amazing, friendly, and helpful. The cheese bread with guava jelly was authentic and a fantastic way to start my day. They had a number of Brazilian coffees drinks to choose from. Perfection! They also sell whole beans from several growers. Amazing! On top of it all, it is inside a beautiful historic building. Highest recommendation!

Yelp
I had a great experience at Aquarela ! The coffee was excellent. Luke, one of the baristas, did an amazing job making my latte just right. His friendly attitude and attention to detail really stood out. Highly recommend this spot!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm not exaggerating when I say this was the best iced latte my partner & I have EVER had! The matcha was alright but did the job! Beyond that- the people working were extremely kind and made the experience that much better! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
My favorite walk in the morning is to my neighborhood cafe. Aquarela is such a cute coffee spot! Quick service and great coffee. If you're in the area check it out! You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
Really unique and delicious coffee shop. I highly recommend the Batida. Absolutely delicious. The chicken croquette was incredible and made me wish I had purchased a few more. The only downside is it was a bit expensive at $25 for two drinks and two small bites.

Karen C.

Yelp
I tried their iced vanilla latte which was good! Staff recommended I try it with condensed milk and I'm glad I did. I like my coffee strong and not sweet and this was that! Staff was super friendly. They have outdoor and indoor seating. Came here to study on a Tuesday morning and it was perfect; not crowded, enough seating and they have WiFi available. Plenty street parking across the street which was .50 cents per hour.
google avatar

Tallulah B.

Yelp
Kind staff and good product! They have indoor seating now which is nice and makes it a perfect neighborhood specialty coffee spot.

Yelp
My orders were great and staff were super friendly and nice to talk to! I had the iced coffee with vanilla syrup, croissant and the hot cocoa and everything was amazing! I will surely definitely come back! Wish there are more parking and a better inside seating!

Yelp
Does this coffee shop allow good doggos? Yes!! Ample outdoor seating to hang out with your dog. Aquarela is a small coffee shop located in an unassuming area between Chinatown and DTLA. They partner with micro-farmers from Brazil to bring rare and fermented coffee. They had the friendliest and most helpful and welcoming employees when we stopped by on a Tuesday morning. We tried the Sabotage and Outono lattes per recommendation and they were both delicious! I especially enjoyed the Sabotage which had chocolate and house spices. We also got to sample two different drip coffees made with their very own micro-roasted beans (red bourbon and yellow catuai) and they were both incredible. We appreciated all the Covid-19 safety measures they had such as offering hand sanitizer, requiring face masks, taking orders outdoors and availability of outdoor seating. There's also a good amount of parking meters along Figueroa. Overall, we feel so fortunate to have stumbled upon Aquarela Coffee and are very excited to return!

Yelp
Everybody knows your name... I love this place. When I walk up, they already have my order ready! The service is outstanding as well as their products. Definitely better than other places... Come here!

Yelp
A friend recommended this cute local coffee shop. The service was A-1. The cashier was so sweet and helpful. She asked if we were first timers, explained the menu, and provided recommendations. After we ordered, she gave us an overview of their bag of coffees and offered a sample. I ordered one of their special lattes, the Sabotage. If you enjoy mocha's, then you will love it.
google avatar

Yelp
Very cute spot with gluten-free pao de queijo- Brazilian cheese balls. They are usually made with cassava/tapioca flour. They were good and warm. I didn't get to step inside, but outside they had their pastry set up and tables to sit at. I just ordered black coffee to go so didn't stay long. But both female workers were sweet and attentive with me. Gave me a free coffee cup to try while I waited for my order.
google avatar

Joseline S.

Yelp
I'm always looking for new coffee shops so when I saw Aquarela in my recommendations I knew I had to try it. I had never had Brazilian coffee so I was excited to try. I came in a Saturday afternoon and they were not busy so my drinks too less than 10min. The guy at the register was really friendly and gave me good drink recommendations. I decided to try the Batida and it was good, I don't think I had ever tried anything like it before. I would like to try their iced coffee and lattes next time. Parking: they have metered parking in the front of the store and the blocks around have parking as well.
google avatar

Yelp
recommend the orange cinnamon or the chocolate coffee. The service is amazing, they just get it and are coffee people. The drinks are well balanced and compliments the acidic and flavors. The coffee here is top tier and people are sleeping on this place.

Yelp
DTLA Location Coffee: 9 out of 10 Customer Service: 10 out of 10 As a non-coffee drinker, this made me hopeful for the future. Their specialty drink (Sabotage?) was one of their sweeter coffees and I think it does this place justice. Will return :) (Please also try the little cheese balls with the guava jelly! So good)

Yelp
I was on the way to a different coffee shop and passed by aquarela. The baristas saw me and my bf walking past and immediately said hello even though we werent going there. That immediately caught our attention and made them memorable to us. After getting our coffee somewhere else my bf was less than impressed with his, so I recommended we try aquarela since it's on the way back and we were both happy we did. Not only do the baristas LOVE what they do but they're more than happy to explain things and gave the BEST customer service I've had in years. Now for the coffees we got the sabotage and the batida both were good ! I like the spice from sabotage and the banana flavor from the batida it reminds me of the nostalgia of a nesquick drink. I love flavors like that! The shop is very small so it'd be easy to miss driving, but I'm so happy we didn't. I honestly can't wait to go back because not only do the people have such beautiful vibes, but they make a pretty great coffee too.
google avatar

Sian S.

Yelp
barista was super nice and helpful in ordering. unique coffee concept but limited seating (and all outdoors). coffee itself was pretty good and decently priced

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised with Aquarela! It's a cute little Brazilian coffee shop in Chinatown. You can't miss it with its painted storefront and chairs and tables upfront. They offer Brazilian style coffee and your basic brews and lattes. I was most curious with the Batida, which is apparently a Brazilian cocktail but Aquarela makes it as a coffee mocktail. SO GOOD! I'd describe it as a blended iced coffee with coconut, banana and condensed milk. I love Brazilian cheese bread (pão de queijo) and thankfully they also have that here! It's 3 for $4 and they give you jam to dip with it. It wasn't the best I had but it's nice to know they have Brazilian pastries as well! I'll definitely try something else when I'm in the area!

Yelp
i frequent cafes in la a lot, but this is hands down my favorite. i stop by this place from time to time (not too often) when i have work in the area, maybe around 2-3 times a year. everytime i visit, somehow this place is very very memorable for me. i always tend to order the saude! the first time i tried it i fell in love with it. most coffees & lattes tend to taste pretty boring to me, the flavor profile is nothing new. the story is different here, im seriously impressed by the depth and flavor of this coffee. the service here is always makes for a good time as well. i appreciate how kind and personable the baristas here are :)

Yelp
So excited to find a nice coffee spot in/around Chinatown. I was there mid-morning and it was fairly warm, but the spot is situated so it was open shade when I showed up. I was in a hurry and I had to grab and go, or I would have loved to stick around to enjoy my cup. I spoke with who I believe to be the proprietor who was super friendly and even let me try two different (very generous) samples before I even purchased anything. I bought a bag of beans, and ordered a pourover black which he said was on the house with the bean purchase (this really doesn't happen often enough). I got the ARARA beans to take home, which I somehow actually got to taste like it did at the shop just with an Aeropress! Will definitely be visiting again.

Yelp
briska are super super friendly Plenty of introductions And got me a cup of latte off the menu It is super good The building has a history Seems like the number 1 in the US who used electricity which seems a lot of fun The building music doesn't match But the building itself is really classic and neat

Yelp
Amazing coffee! Authentic, flavorful, strong but not too acidic. Give this little hole in the wall a shot, you won't regret it. Coffee beans from Brazil. Amazing customer service, COME HERE.

Yelp
Unique savory flavors. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our choice of lattes. I ordered the Saúde Latte, which had an amazing balance of citrusy undertones, and cinnamon that blended so well with the coffee. It felt like I replaced the dull vitamin C routine with something fun and delicious. My boyfriend got the Sabotage Latte, and it tasted so heart warming. This is definitely a jolly drink, as you taste a good mixture of quality chocolate and coffee flavors with the perfect kick of sweetness (not too sweet). 100% recommend!

Yelp
They're wonderful. I haven't left a yelp review in years, but I dusted off the account to support these folks. They've become a fixture of a lost block of LA - a strangely romantic spot where the traffic flies off the edge of downtown toward the freeway and terra incognita. And in this in-between space, with the old-school chinatown residents, new-school younger artists, and cititzens-in-between of every race and style, these folks serve delicious coffee. Like delicious... well-sourced, well-made, interesting coffee - bravo. The Brazilian ethos of the shop infuses the aesthetic and the spirit as well - and the spirit is what inspires me write this. Just to name a few of the wonderful dedicated baristas - Joanna, Bree, Lee, Orian, Maira - who make the place so fun, so welcoming, and still so funky. I hope you, dear reader, get to be served by them one day. Finally, the owners - Alex and Otavio - make the watermelon-colored magic happen. Thank you to all. Reader, enjoy!

Yelp
Coffee first. Shenanigans later. Lol. It's time to have a great coffee adventure w/c makes life exciting. Aquarela Coffee is a cool unpretentious small corner coffee shop and a rare farm-direct Brazilian coffees, micro-roasted in Los Angeles. They were conceived in the specialty coffee culture of São Paulo, Brazil. Cool! They're located on Figueroa and Alpine street of DTLA. I arrived on a foggy Tuesday morning and ordered a simple drip coffee. The front patio seats has a relaxing atmosphere with a good street view where customers can ogle at DTLA skyline. Coffee was perfectly blended and has a good aroma. Moreover, they offer a very limited pastries. Staff was obsequious, amiable and followed health protocol. Coffee prices were reasonable and highly competitive. Street metered parking only. Overall, I had a good brazilian coffee. I highly recommend this nice little coffee shop.

Yelp
Now; of course I've seen this on TikTok. Long story short; I was a bit stressed. Came in to try a regular latte. Barista recommended a speciality drink, when she mentioned "cardamom" now as an Arab "say No more" One of my favorites now. Life is rough, but a specialty latte from here makes it An Ok day.

Yelp
They're nice here but they only have two options of milk and they charge you for both. (almond or oat) Matcha is good.
google avatar

Cindy Z.

Yelp
Amazing! Everything about this space was 10/10. The service, the food, the coffee, the beans, and the people! First time visited Aquarela to buy some Brazilian coffee beans (I love that they source it from Brazil and directly work with the producers), and was met with amazing service from Jo and Bri (?). I luckily also met one of the owners Octavio (?) who explained to me the different type of coffee beans and palettes each met. I was able to purchase a few as gifts in addition to trying their delicious pour over coffee and cheese balls!

Yelp
There's street parking with meters or some residential parking around the corner. I stumbled upon this coffee shop after an event in a space next door. They have some seating inside with good lighting - it's a pretty intimate cute space. I came in 15 minutes before closing but they were so nice and helped me choose a drink. Normally an iced chai is my to go so I asked what specialty drinks they had that were similar and the owner recommended I get one of their iced tea drinks that had condensed milk, tea, ginger, and honey. I think their menu is seasonal so the pictures of the menus on yelp didn't show the drink I got but I liked it a lot! It honestly gave me thai tea vibes which I was into. They have a pastry case with lots of yummy options but I opted for the fig scone with matcha glaze and it was SO good. They recommended I get it warmed which was 100% the right decision and I told myself I'd only eat some but honestly ate the entire thing right there. Definitely stop by this coffee shop if you're in the area and looking for a quick drink/bite with phenom service and good vibes.

Yelp
A Portuguese Cafe in DTLA! I really appreciate the fact that the cashier took the time to educate us on Portuguese culture through food. He was a great ambassador. He explained that Cafezinho is how most Portuguese drink their coffee and so of course I had to try it that way. It's black with a little raw sugar in case you're wondering. The coffee is kinda nutty and tart, by they way. I'm not sure what beans was being used and I don't know if the beans rotate, but at the time of my visit, that's what it tasted like. Latte is OK. Next time, I would totally order their Sabotage, which sounded like a Mocha but with orange and some spices. When we were there, they apparently scored some Coxinha and Empanadas. The Coxinha is what I would normally think of as "empanadas" and the Empanadas are what I normally think of as "meat pies". Anyway, they are good. If you get the chance to order one, order it. Hot Chocolate is ok. There was no problem finding an available parking spot on the street in front of the coffee shop.

Kelly S.

Yelp
Cashier was so nice and recommended me a great drink! It's hard to find GOOD coffee in LA. This was on par with Seattle coffee.
