The Best Dishes Eater Editors Ate This Week, Fall 2018 - Eater NY

"For those who care to know, this so-called noodle neighborhood more or less overlaps with the borders of Hell’s Kitchen. Make of that what you will, but let the record state my ramen ($13) was pretty good! The tonkotsu broth was both porky and clean, without any excess richness or coarse sediment. The noodles were firm and al dente. And the yuzukosho, that very of-the-moment condiment, sat on top, allowing for the diner to mix in the fragrant chile citrus paste to their taste. Know how much I mixed in? All of it. And while I’m not sure this is New York’s ramen district, I’ll be back for sure." - Eater Staff

Yelp
Where in NYC for a show and decided to visit our old home area of Hell's Kitchen along 9th Ave to dine on ethnic cusinine we don't usually find out in Bucks County PA. On this cold night, post show, we ended up at ESZ Paella & Tapas on 9th Ave at 50th street. Was empty as it was Super Bowl Sunday night and we had an 8 pm train to make. Plenty of time to sit and enjoy some tappas with a couple glasses of wine in a NYC environ. Super friendly staff and so pleased to help and make you happy. Took us a bit to read through and get familarized with all the lovely Paella and Tappas (Spanisha nd Venezuelan options). We kicked off with the Camarones Ajillo - saffron flavored shirmp on creamy garlic parmesan sauce, and albondigas Ardient - a lovely spicy meatball tappas that was AWESOME, next the Montaditos- Venezuela and Burrito Chicken Caribean with a side of black beans. All the flavors worked so well and complemented each plating. We enjoyed our dishes with glasses of Pinot Noir (myself) and Sauvignon Blanc (my wife). All in all, an excellent evening out after theater or anytime.

Yelp
Came here with a friend for lunch. The interior was casual and simple, but lively and full of color. Out of the tapas, I ordered the Arepitas Ibericas, which were arepa balls stuffed with pork and cheese, topped with aioli sauce. It tasted pretty good, with a nicely crisp exterior. However, it was served without cheese, so I felt like it was missing something. I also tried my friend's Tostones with shredded beef. These were delicious! The Tostones were satisfyingly crispy, perfectly thin and lightly salted. The beef was juicy and well seasoned. For my main course, I went with the Chicken Paella, adding Shrimp. This came with peppers and wonderfully flavorful saffron rice. There was plenty of chicken and shrimp throughout the paella. The Shrimp was succulent, while the chicken was tender. Service was pretty good. Our waitress was personable and helpful. Everything came out in a timely manner. Prices were decent for the area. I would consider coming back, but wouldn't rush to do so.

Yelp
Must try: Paella Burrito, Montadito Venezuela, Yuquitas con Chimichurri, Albondigas, and Sangria! Why: Came for the Paella Burrito and it was fantastic! Packed with beef, peppers, cheese, lettuce and Paella rice Mixed with Caribbean Spicy Sauce. Tons of flavor in each bite. Tapas were also delicious - Montadito (arepas with plantains, shredded beef, and garlic sauce on top), yuca fries, and albondigas (meatballs). That sauce on the meatballs was so good! You can get it spicy too. Washed it down with a refreshing Passion Fruit Sangria! Notes: Small and cute restaurant in Hell's Kitchen with small tables. Good for small groups. Great service - workers were welcoming, helpful, and attentive.

Yelp
Good food, but too overpriced for portions. The point of tapas is to have small inexpensive bites in my opinion, and this place is high in the teams for price and not a lot of food. I got the meatballs with potatoes. The meatballs were exquisite. The potatoes were OK. I like all of it. But for what I paid the value isn't there.

Yelp
Was on vacation in New York & staying close to this restaurant which caught my eye due to the outside decor and menu so I decided to finally venture in with a bud. The menu is typical of this type of food, however, the owner/manager? Lorena graciously and patiently explained each item and her recommendations. I am not the type who just follows restaurant's staff recommendations as I like to discover the various tastings on my own, however, there was a genuineness about Lorena's explanations & suggestions. I could not have been more impressed with her recommended montaditos (wish I remembered the name but it's their most popular one) and paired it with an exquisite glass of peach sangria and also tried a little of my bud's delicious frescolita(a venezuelan soft drink.) Overall, a very pleasant and delicious experience.

Yelp
We have visited this small storefront restaurant in the past and have always enjoyed it. It was the same this time. We were there for lunch before a matinee. Great food at reasonable prices for the theater district. I had the seafood paella and my wife had the chicken. The portions were filling for lunch special. Friendly service. The food is 5*..

Yelp
This small restaurant has a big menu and the service was excellent. We had several great dishes and shared them family style. All of us thought the flavors and presentation were incredible.

Yelp
I don't know if it was an off day but the paella had an extremely odd taste.. like a hint of dark dark chocolate? Not sure, but it was weird. Paella burrito and empanadas were ok but I was pretty disappointed overall :(

Shopgirl S.

Yelp
The owners and staff are very attentive; the paellas are delicious, and the place is very cozy. Always I have the paella, which is outstanding. The passion fruit sangria was delicious. The crema catalana and the flan were OK.

Yelp
I got a pulsd deal to come here and after seeing the many good reviews I couldn't wait. We made reservations and glad we did since this place is on the small side and it was packed. We got to try the empanadas, garlic shrimp, seafood paella and churros. I was shocked but how amazing the food was. Everything was flavorful and the portions are very generous. Now the paella was super tasty but not Spaniard original. I can't wait to come back and taste their other dishes.

Yelp
I love this place. I was a little skeptical of the paella burrito, but it was one of the best burritos I've ever had -- perfectly layered, super flavorful, and the cheese and paella combo really works. (I had the spicy chicken one, and the spicy sauce was delicious.) Husband had a beef paella burrito, and honestly we should have split one because both of us only ate half. He also ordered the cheese sticks, which he raved about. But it was the service that really makes this place. The owner was so friendly, so kind. We will definitely be back to work our way through the tapas menu. And somehow we have to save room for dessert too. (For what it's worth, the restaurant was packed on a weeknight at around 5:30 or so. We sat at the bar, which was fine. But this place is small and deservedly popular. They do take reservations, so plan accordingly.)

Yelp
The Chicken Paella and Land and Sea Paella was excellent, super flavorful. Sweet pepper Burrata is delicious! A cool little spot in Hell's Kitchen - staff are super helpful!

Yelp
Visiting friends and family in NY and was invited to dinner with some friends. I was in the mood for Spanish food so my friend suggested Ez Paella & Tapas. Located in Hell's Kitchen off of 57th Street. At first glance the restaurant is very small but very nice place. The restaurant filled up pretty quickly and you could tell that this place is pretty popular. Henry our waiter was great very friendly, and attentive to us & made great suggestions. I had the spicy vegetable paella, a garden salad, & we shared a large pitcher of sangria. My paella was so good. I did a little happy dance when I ate it. The portions were a good size and I couldn't even finish all my food. The sangria was delicious we could have probably ordered another pitcher. My friends had the seafood paella, and shrimp burrito and both enjoyed their meal. My friend works near by and loved it so much that she told our waiter that he will be seeing her at lunchtime. Such a great little hidden gem in the heart of Hells Kitchen. Next time I'm in NY looking for a paella fix I will definitely be back.

Yelp
So many good dishes to choose. We settled on creamy garlic shrimp, meatballs. They are delicious, and passion fruit juice. Foods are delicious. Will definitely come back to try more. Drink is okay, too! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Had this placed bookmarked for a while, and just happened to walked by it. So why not? Stopped by for a late lunch and I was pretty much the only customer. Service was alright decor was nice and cozy but food felt short of my expectations. I was very exited about this Venezuelan- Spanish establishment but food didn't quite get me there. I ordered the Arepitas with nata and the Pabellón. The arepitas were alright what I had expected them to be... but the Pabellón really let me down. The rice and beans were just a tad bland but still acceptable. The shredded beef however was salty and did not look like shredded beef. I would come back and try the Spanish tapas and the paellas but I'm not sure I would enjoy the Venezuelan dishes. It's a shame as I was really looking forward to enjoy this place.

Yelp
Morcilla was delightfully smooth on the palate and had zero liveriness. The pieces were savoury and well seasoned with no odd textures. The creamy garlic shrimp were not huge. But the balance of garlic, butter, and cream has subtle and had a proper amount of acid. The service was prompt and kind . The space is small and cozy and clean.

Yelp
This place truly deserves more recognition and deserves to be reviewed by more people. This tapas place is a true hidden gem, offering affordability without compromising on taste. While it may not boast an extensive menu like upscale tapas spots, everything they serve is done with excellence. My personal favorite, the Montadito de Morcilla, showcases the amazing sausage that leaves my taste buds singing with delight. The Camarones Picantes is bursting with flavor, and the sauce is an absolute winner. The Beef Empanada Gallega, although a bit dry, is saved by its fantastic dipping sauce, creating a delectable combination. Though the Seafood Paella did not blow me away, considering the price, it's still a worthwhile indulgence. The restaurant's small size adds to the charm of the dining experience, making it cozy and inviting.

Yelp
Maybe the best meal we ate during our entire 3 week vacation. It was so, so good. Our group of 5 sat at the bar and the staff cooked for us and entertained us and dazzled us. They were such capable hosts, chatting and joking with us. We had so much fun. Enrique, Lorena and Alejandro were all kind and generous and genuinely welcoming. And the paella was amazing! Generous portions of rich flavorful paella made the day seem far more elegant and interesting. This is not the kind of meal I eat routinely but if I had the money, it sure would be!!!

Maria Jose P.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Everything from the service, the drinks (specially the parchita juice), and food was 10/10. Alex and Lorena (the owners) have an amazing spot, and they are superb hosts. My friends and I ordered the montaditos (best thing ever), tequeños, patatas bravas, croquetas, and the camarones con mango. We cant wait to be back.

Yelp
EZ Paella has a booth at the winter village in Bryant Park. It was one of the only gluten free options and I was so happy that their menu was clearly labeled that all the paella's were gluten free! I enjoyed the spicy veggie paella bowl, and my mom got the spicy chicken paella burrito. Next I want to try the brick and mortar location in hells kitchen!

Yelp
This is the kind of place you can walk by 1000 times and never notice. Very small footprint about 20 seats inside plus the bar. However, once you discover it, you're gonna be angry at yourself for all the times you walked by. they do take reservations, which was lucky for us cause we were a party at five. When we were seated, we met the owner/chef and he kind of took us on a tour the menu and made some recommendations. We got six tapas with each one being better than the last. Our server Laura was amazing. This is not the kind of place. I would expect five star service, but she cleared all of our plates and silverware and replaced them after each course. The paella was very good, but didn't have paella crispy crunch that I expect from real paella. With that we certainly ate it all. The menu is a combination of Venezuelan and Spanish food. We tried all the desserts which were very good, but the Tres Leche cake was out of this world. Overall, the food was amazing and the staff was even better. We also got a picture of the white sangria which was made with passionfruit. Just the right amount of sweetness to handle any spiciness from the food. My only complaint is that they didn't mention that there was an auto gratuity but we added $30 on top of that anyway since the food and service was so amazing.

Yelp
If you know Spanish food DO NOT go. This place had really bad Spanish food. I understand the mixture of cuisines but didn't like scallops (not really fresh) patatas bravas (not what expected...potatoes overcook and sauce was not bravas) or croquetas( too dry).... Service was ok.

Yelp
This was one of the best finds we had during our stay in NYC. Everting about this place was excellent, from the superb service to the mouthwatering dishes! Don't miss the passion fruit sangria. Wow!!!! We tried several different dishes and they were all excellent. Do yourself a favor.... Stop by here!

Yelp
Second time here. Surprised that I didn't leave a review. The food, service and wine were all fabulous! From the time you enter they make you feel so welcomed! We ordered the shrimp al ajillo. The sauce is lick the bowl good! Plenty of shrimp to put on the crunchy bread! All I could say after every bite was, yum! Had the seafood paella. All the seafood was fresh. The rice was a great texture and filled with seafood in every bite! This place is intimate and very welcoming. I will definitely be back to check out their happy hour! The owners/cooks, Alejandro and Lorena are great cooks and great people! The waitress that was there both times is also fantastic. She makes sure everyone is pleased and taken care of! Great food! Great vibes!

Yelp
This place is a must if you're in Hell's Kitchen and want to try tapas from Spain or Venezuela. The service is excellent and the staff is very nice. The tapas are great for sharing and their sangria has great selections and a passion fruit variety which I never had before.
google avatar

Raul Q.

Yelp
Service was great and the ambiance was on point but the food was just okay for me. The paella was good and seemed just okay but seemed to be acking flavor to set it apart Our friends ordered the shrimp and chicken burritos that didn't seem like anything great. I would pass on the beef tostones, beef had no flavor and tostones were hard from being overcooked We also got the white sangria and of course it tastes good, but maybe cause it had alcohol

Mercedes C.

Yelp
EZ Paella was so good! Their fusion tapas were amazing! Our favorites were the Montaditos Venezuela and mango shrimp. We also ordered the tequeños (so good!), tortilla española, patatas bravas and the croquetas. Alex and Lorena were amazing hosts and proudly shared their passion for their food with our group. We can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Great little spot to have a delicious lunch or dinner. Service is excellent, food is very flavorful, and ambiance and music is pleasant. Great deal on Groupon as well.
google avatar

Lorena G.

Yelp
We loved the paella, the sangria was like in Spain, this is going to be our place to go in NYC. Loved the SANGRIA
google avatar

Tony H.

Yelp
Food is incredibly salty and undercooked. Sangria was also very tasteless. The tables and seats are grimy
google avatar

Antony K.

Yelp
I went here before a Broadway show a few months ago. I was a bit disappointed. The appetizers seemed like they were just heated from frozen. The paella presentation was fantastic, but it tasted a bit drier and had less seafood pieces than expected. We got a pitcher of the margs and it just tasted like pure juice. Other than the food, the service was decent and the restaurant itself was cozy-simple.
google avatar

Corina R.

Yelp
We happen to find this place and make reservations for Friday night. Good thing we had reservations there are only a handful of tables and there is a reason it fills up quickly. One of the owners is the server and the other owner is the chef. The food is amazing. We tried about five different toppers and everyone was delicious. We ordered a picture of sangria and drank every bit. I definitely recommend this restaurant. You will not be disappointed if you like tapas and sangria This is where you want to be.
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
Excellent food and very friendly service. Both shrimp tapas we had were great - tender and juicy shrimp. Empanadillos were also great, as were the churros. Only disappointing thing was the peach sangria -- although it was a generous serving, it seemed like the peaches were canned.

CORA P.

Yelp
What a GEM of a tiny restaurant -- they take reservations! We had, in order of my favorites: 1. Tostones con Carne [tapas] 2. Spicy Seafood Paella [entree] 3. Scallops al Ajillo [tapas] 4. Yuquitas con Chimichurri [tapas] The staff was friendly and offered great appetizer suggestions. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. We were three adults, and there was enough for all us to share. We also had the flan -- it was more dense than the Mexican flan that I'm used to. It was sweet, but not as sweet as the Mexican flan, so it was PERFECT.

Yelp
My friend and I came here for the restaurant week deal dinner where you can get 1 drink + 1 tapa + 1 burrito or paella + 1 dessert for $45. It was honestly a really good deal but we were not the biggest fans of the paella and the desserts. We both had the passion fruit sangria which was the highlight of our meal. The drinks were served in a big glass and the sangria was honestly really delicious. I loved the fact that it didn't taste super alcoholic and I like the mango pieces that were in the drink. For the tapa, we got the chicken Empanadas and the spicy creamy shrimp. The empanadas were pretty good. They were still hot when they arrived at the table and the sauce really adds to the flavoring. I had the spicy creamy shrimp in mild since I wasn't sure how spicy it would be. Turned out the they weren't spicy at all and the shrimp tasted really good with the toasted baguette pieces that came along with the dish. The flavoring was really good! For the entree, we got the seafood paella and the land and sea paella. The rice was quite mushy and the seafood in the paella weren't that fresh... Lastly for dessert, we got the flan and tres leches. The flan was really different from the flans I've had in the past. This one looked like a donut in a square shape and the texture is hard. It's very different from the pudding like texture flan I'm used to. The tres leches was alright... Love the powdered sugar artwork on the plate though! The service overall was really good. The staffs were super attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Cozy spot in hells kitchen, looked casual from the photos but the prices are not so casual. Overall, everything was delicious but slightly expensive. We got: - croquetas 8/10: a little small but delicious and comes out piping hot - patatas 7/10: this might be a personal preference thing but i wasn't too impressed with this one - seafood paella 9/10: a bit expensive but delicious, portion size was good for 2 (with the above two dishes) - sangria small carafe 9/10: this was definitely my favorite part of the meal

Magi G.

Yelp
Delicious food, very nice mulled wine, excellent service and good price.Recommend for Spanish food.
google avatar

Brian H.

Yelp
Food was awesome, ambiance was perfect for a casual date or drinks with friends. Low light, but totally low pressure vibe.
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
I don't understand how this place is getting 4 and 5 star reviews. I came with two friends and we ordered about 5 different tapas and a red sangria carafe. -sangria tasted like sweet grape juice; very arguable if it even included any actual fermented wine. -beef and chicken empanadas: the chicken was dry and flavorless but the beef was good -potatas bravas: this was simply not prepared like in any Spanish tapas restaurant in the US or Spain. It was not good -Tequenos: these were cheese sticks. They were ok -Croquetas: flavor was not good - flavorless and a weird texture.

Laura F.

Yelp
Service was great - staff was attentive. The food was delicious & came out PIPING hot! Also loved the little touch on the churros
google avatar

FoodLover F.

Yelp
Between the odd service (maybe he was new because he knew nothing about the food) and the mistakes to our order plus, the worst, the bland seafood Paella....... not sure what y'all are saying that gave this very mediocre place high marks? The garlic Parmesan shrimp was fantastic Everything else, including the sangria, is average at best. The people next to us returned their paella cause there was a blond hair in it.
google avatar

Dennis T.

Yelp
This neighborhood gem makes me feel at home. The owners are a married couple and they share their personal story with you through their food, and if you're lucky enough to sit at the open kitchen, they'll chat with you just like you're family. The good is half from Spain, half influenced by Venezuelan cuisine, and completely delicious. You can order a little bit or a lot and you'll be pleased no matter what. I personally love their veggie options and most of all, the sangria by the pitcher.
google avatar

Isabelle W.

Yelp
Words cannot describe the hospitality of the owners or the QUALITY of the paella here. I've previously discovered them at their Columbus Circle location, and let me tell you I fell in love with their paella. The owners are incredibly generous and compassionate. I walked in at 1:30 to just put an order for a to-go order, and she insisted I sit at the bar and asked if I wanted water. Watching them go from a little place in the Columbus Circle Turnstyle to another location in Hell's Kitchen makes me so happy! Their chicken is always moist and flavorful, and their paella NEVER lacks the perfect amount of seasoning. Please PLEASE support this amazing establishment. You definitely won't regret it!
google avatar

Mary N.

Yelp
Really great paella in hells kitchen. This is a newly opened location (another EZ Paella is located closer to Columbus Circle). The menu includes paella, tapas, and drinks. They are also running a few specials (lunch special includes wine/salad/paella for ~$15, and dinner for 2 includes a bottle of wine). Between the two of us, we shared an app (potato/onion/egg dish) and the land and sea paella which was really delicious. Since we both had snacks beforehand, that was enough food. Our waitress/hostess was really great and the food came out super quickly. I'm looking forward to coming back.
google avatar

Warren A.

Yelp
Seafood paella was bland. It needs more seasoning and flavor. The sangria was very weak in wine.

BY D.

Yelp
Not the most stellar meal. The sangria tasted like watered down, flavorless juice. Food was not particularly flavorful. The scallops were undercooked with a highly unappealing texture. Same for teeny, tiny little shrimp in a largely flavorless paella. All topped off by largely apathetic sevice and a $172 bill for 3 of us. I think not.
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
Was treated to warm and friendly service accompanied by exceptional Spanish paellas, cooked and seasoned perfectly with a big mug of sangria to top it all off. Portions were perfect--honestly could've split it into a few meals. Will definitely be back for the lunch special.
google avatar

Paige A.

Yelp
Tapas were great!! It was completely empty when we went at 5:30 on a Sunday. Good pre-broadway dinner, would recommend!

Pat R.

Yelp
Food was delicious and the service was great. We will come back next time we are in the city.
