Local Critic Reviews Boston Restaurant Kala Thai Cookery | Eater Boston

"This Roslindale neighborhood spot offers creative twists on comfort food, anchored by a standout polenta goat-cheese Twinkie that the reviewer calls "one of the most mind-blowingly delicious" items—its crispy polenta exterior balances tangy goat cheese and marinara and is complemented by pesto. Other notable dishes include roasted Brussels sprouts with pancetta, a terrific chicken under a brick, and a Cuban sandwich with slow-roasted pork." - Dana Hatic

We walked in and immediately felt like we were at home. Lisa, the bartender was wonderful and made incredible drinks, and, oh...oh...That polenta and goat cheese Twinkie was absolutely freaking amazing!!! I would go back to Boston just for that. Not my photo, but you just have to see it. Great atmosphere, great neighborhood, Great bar.

Google
This made for a fun, delicious double date night on a beautiful evening. My wife and I both enjoyed our dishes - my salmon was cooked delicately to a nice medium rare, and her pork chop was tasty and cooked with care as well. The only thing to be aware of is time - while all the staff were friendly and courteous, the time it took for us to get a server was a tad long, we didn't see our server often (so much that some of us ran out of water), especially after our entrees arrived, and the wait time in food was not the quickest. But, we were in great company, and the ambiance of the spot as well as ample spacing between tables made it easy to pass the time with conversation.

Google
Delicious food! Cooked and seasoned to perfection! A few minor mistakes, but overall, great service. The patio is really relaxing and scenic. And there is a decently sized parking lot behind, but not visible from the patio!

Google
This delightful local gastropub is one of our favorite places in the neighborhood. Our go-to entrees include the blackened chicken sandwich, the polenta goat cheese "twinkie", the brick chicken, the steak and fontina sandwich, or the arugula apple pecan salad (add steak or chicken). If you're feeling even more indulgent, add on the side cornbread or the bread pudding dessert. If you're in the area, give 753 a try. You won't be disappointed.

Google
The chicken is amazing! Sandwiches are really good too. The patio is lovely and the service is great!

After years of saying I wanted to try this place I was finally able to 2 weeks ago. I'm so mad at myself for waiting so long because everything was so good. We went pretty late on a weeknight and they were still accommodating. Everyone was friendly and the service was quick. We ordered the polenta goat cheese twinky, wings, surf & turf, steak tips (both steaks were made the exact way we asked them to be). We also ordered the bread pudding to go as it was late and we didn't want the staff to stay late just for us. Everything was extremely tasty. I also ordered a few drinks and while they tasted really good they weren't my favorite. We had such a great experience my husband took some of his employees there a week later and had the same stellar experience. Can't wait to return.

Google
I enjoyed my experience at 753 South. When I arrived to see the interior, it looked very cramped but the outdoor seating area was much more spacious. The heat lamps and overhead string lights were a great add for the season (this was early summer). My servers was prompt and very welcoming. She gave her honest opinion on our drink selection when asked. The food was flavorful and presented well. I will definitely return during my next visit to the city.

Yelp
I really like this place. We came with 4 older adults for dinner based on yelp reviews. It did not disappoint. The dining room is attractive but a bit too open and crowded, thus so noisy that it's impossible to follow a conversation across the table. We each had different items from the menu, a burger, steak frites, shrimp po boy, and brick chicken among other items (drinks and appetizers). The food was tasty, portion sizes reasonable, and prices competitive. We will be back!

Sachin S.

Yelp
Food was decent, but ambience and service were laughable. The place was pretty dark and music was too loud to have a conversation. The waiter was the slowest I have seen in a long time. We waited fifteen minutes just to get our check paid. Meanwhile, dude was just leaning against a window doing nothing with a half empty restaurant.

Yelp
Solid, reliable neighborhood spot serving approachable classics like fried chicken, fish, & steak. I can't say I've ever been blown away by any food or drink here, but haven't had anything that I didn't care for either, and overall have found it pretty consistent and am usually satisfied with my meal. The menu doesn't change a whole lot, and I'd personally love to see more rotating specials, specifically with a description of them online (the take-out portal saying something like "salmon special" doesn't really help describe what the dish is about?).

Yelp
Pictures do not do this place justice. Terrific meal. A gorgeous outside dining area. Lots of great menu options for our many dietary requirements. Stiff gin and tonic (two thumbs up). The goat cheese Twinkie was to die for.

Yelp
What a wonderful find! We were heading up to MGM Fenway to see the Pretenders and decided to stop in Roslindale to try this place. The reviews were good. The food was excellent. Prompt service, tasty drinks and a very attentive wait staff! Highly recommended and we will be back again on our next visit into the city. Roslindale has many great eateries- this spot is at the top of the list!

Yelp
Love the patio and the goat cheese Twinkie and fish tacos are delicious. The hosts work to get everyone seated though they are very busy. Waitstaff was friendly and available.
google avatar

Ninamary B.

Yelp
The food is excellent, and the staff aims to please. We had made a reservation to eat outside, on the back patio. Unfortunately, the reservation got lost in the shuffle. No worries! We were given a table outside, and when it started to drizzle, they moved us to a table that was protected by an umbrella. I ordered the special: baked sole with mashed potatoes and green beans. Everything was cooked and seasoned perfectly. My friend ordered the Twinkie, which was goat cheese that was deep-fried. It was excellent. My other friends always order the salmon and that's what they did on our recent visit. They enjoyed their meal as well. I would return.

Yelp
Awesome ambiance, friendly diners sitting near by to point out the house favorites, and wonderful tasty entrees. The Fish tacos were the best around & the portion was immense! The vibe was cool and laid back. Def coming back soon! Quite a find in Rossie Sq.

Christy D.

Yelp
Alisa is a phenomenal bartender. I'm an espresso martini SNOB!!! She makes the best one yet!!! Highly recommend visiting her. Not only is her cocktail delivery exceptional but her personality is better. I'll DEFINITELY be back.

Yelp
Fun neighborhood restaurant. Easy menu, fun drinks to sample. Parking right next door (also right by the Roslindale Village MBTA station$. They have outdoor seating as well

Yelp
Fantastic food! Everything on the menu looked wonderful! The service was perfect and ambiance relaxing. I hope to visit 753 south again and again!

Colleen M.

Yelp
Food amazing! Consistantly Fantastic. Service NOT good, food served at different times only 3 diners,4 minute wait no apology. Brought steak tips ordered steak. "oh sorry" Not replaced.

Vilma O.

Yelp
Been going to this restaurant for years. Love the food, great atmosphere . Worst experience at the end of my meal. The server was not pleased with the tip. Therefore, she took it upon herself to mention it on my way out. She said "thanks for the blank amount tip" in a sarcastic tone. She made the comment In front of other guests, the other server and my companion. It was very unprofessional , poor taste and a complete shame. I really enjoyed my meals there and spent money often there.

Dottie N.

Yelp
Absolute neighborhood gem. Love the patio in the warmer months. Service is great, and food delish. Nice for a drink at the bar as well.

Yelp
Our first dinner at 753 South was Thursday right before an opera at Substation. Our waitress was so attentive knowing we had a show to attend. The food and drinks both were fine, especially The Cornell, a mix of prosecco, bitters & sugar cube. Not at all sweet. For appetizer my husband and I shared a Mediterranean combo. We got pita bread plus hummus, baba ganoush, feta, maybe tzatziki, & another, all very tasty. Our entrees were fish & chips and brick chicken. My husband found his fish to be fresh, delicious. He couldn't finish the fries! My chicken was juicy white meat reminding me of spatchcocked chicken we eat occasionally. It was served with smashed potatoes and arugula. I took some home it was so generous. Oddly we had trouble reserving a table by calling so I emailed my request. You can't imagine how surprised I was to promptly hear from Bob whom I presume is manager. As we left I noticed a man standing near the door who turned out to be Bob so I complimented him on the restaurant. Bottom line -- The atmosphere at 753 was welcoming to all, including a handicapped entrance in the rear. The menu focuses on a few dishes and we were entirely pleased. Atmosphere is upbeat, staff are helpful and the kitchen staff, very competent. We hope to return. Thank you so much.

Yelp
The food is very good here, but limited especially for vegetarians. They do have a couple of good salads (the apple pecan arugula salad is my favorite and my go to) but if you don't want a salad your only other options are a beyond burger or the mac n cheese, both of which are delicious but I'd understand why you wouldn't want them. The drinks are tasty and very creative and nicely presented. They're colorful and classy, yet still fun. Again, while the menu is limited, they do everything exceedingly well.

Yelp
Another cornerstone of Rozzie. Comfort food through and through with some interesting and creative cocktails. The staff, most of whom have been there for many years, are jovial, attentive and knowledgeable. Bob, the owner, is always present to ensure his customers are well cared for. I recommend everything in the menu! No lie. My favorites are the Twinkie, chicken under a brick, fried chicken, lamb meatballs and all the salads. Don't forget to finish off with the brioche bread pudding or chocolate mousse and Judy's infamous espresso martini! It's a very comfortable and warm dining room and a bar crowd of locals who are very welcoming.

Yelp
Hadn't been to 753 in a while but always enjoy my time here, which is usually on the patio even pre Covid. I got the bargains of the nite, a $9 glass of Gruner Veltliner and the $17 fried chicken breast dinner w green beans, mashed and gravy. The order is huge looking like a schnitzel. I started by cutting it in half but decided screw it, I'm eating the whole meal. So good. Friends got the same plus a nice big arugula salad and well made cocktails. Had a bite of the bread pudding for dessert, just the way it should be on the light puffy side. Great patio, awesome service, nice time. They've got heat lamps ready to go when it gets cooler.
google avatar

Yelp
I finally came here for brunch and was very well pleased. My family ordered the omlette special of the day which consists of spinach and mushrooms and goat cheese and I had the eggs sardou with artichoke which was delicious! Highly recommend. Friendly service. Will happily come back here again!

Yelp
Amazing, start to finish. Great service even better food and drink. 6 stars if I could give it

Yelp
Another pinterest-esque place to eat in Roslindale Village! Seriously, is it just a Roslindale thing to have cute patios? It was humid-less summer afternoon so I took the opportunity to take my friends to Redd's for dinner and drinks out on their patio. To our surprise, the gate was locked and chairs were stacked on top of tables. Apparently, Redd's is only open on Sundays for brunch and closes after 3p. My friends were hangry and looked to me to rectify this situation and I did just that when I opened my handy dandy Yelp app to find this "hot new restaurant." 753 South has an equally cute of a patio dining area as Redd's with dangling string lights and all. Food was fantastic too. I wasn't too hungry so I didn't get the brick chicken the other reviews mention. Instead I ordered the Cuban sandwich. The Cuban was slightly oily but the flavors were just right. Plus, I loved that there was plenty of pickles inside the sandwich and on the side! My friends got the burger and the walnut apple salad and both really liked their food. In fact, my eyes kept wandering to other tables because all the food looked so good! All in all, great food in a great space. I suggest making a trip out here before the weather gets too cold to sit in the patio.

Renee R.

Yelp
753 South is a great place to eat and the atmosphere is great too. Food is very tasty and service is very good. Always looking forward to going back. Great neighborhood spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Drinks are excellent. Food was very good not amazing but very good. Got the truffle fries. Wings. And fish tacos. Fish tacos definitely best part of the 3. Would get those again probably not the other two.

Yelp
Avoid weekends when the patio is open until further notice! My partner and I enjoy this place in the winter when it is adequately staffed to serve just the indoor seating. I was recently here on a Friday night when the patio was open and was seated outside. Looking around I immediately noticed some issues. Many tables had not yet been served anything from the bar and there were at least 3 SUV sized baby carriages at tables and many infants. Needless to say, there was a long wait to be greeted by a server. So we put in our orders for drinks and a shared app. The app came quickly, but no drinks. The server came back said "the drinks are on the way", asked if we wanted to put in our main course. I said with a chuckle "sure as long as they don't arrive before the drinks". Guess what happened next? The mains arrived quickly, the steak which had been ordered medium-rare, was well done and had to be sent back. Around this point all the babies in their SUV carriages started getting cranky and their parents were trying to leave but couldn't get their bills. Finally, the drinks arrived, literally 40 minutes after we ordered them. That helped a little, but could not salvage what had become a disastrous dining experience. The lesson I learned is: just don't go on weekends when the patio is open, the food quality and service falls apart.
google avatar

Dil S.

Yelp
Awesome food and drinks, great service, mice city on the patio. Chicken tacos, nachos, chicken sandwich, and cuban were all wonderful. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. She even gave us a delicious order of fish tacos that was incorrectly ordered for another table. Had some little mouse guests running around on the patio at night, but can't expect them to fix Boston's outdoor rodent problem. Will dine indoors at night next time.
google avatar

Yelp
Never a dull moment and always a great experience!! Indoor or outdoor dining Or, sit at the bar with Judi and try one of her delicious concoctions.
google avatar

Yelp
Great date night spot! Delicious, as always, and the staff are super knowledgeable and attentive.

Yelp
I had heard great things about this place and finally got a chance to try it when some friends were visiting from out of town. First impression - this is a really cozy place, lit nice, and the back patio is big and has heat lamps. Great atmosphere. There were 6 of us and we started with the fried goat cheese twinkie and the calamari and it was thumbs up on both of those things. Lots of flavor and the calamari wasn't too chewy. Most people had cocktails and everyone found them to be delicious, so two thumbs up for the bar staff as well. For dinner, there were ribs and salmon and meatloaf and both the fried chicken and the chicken under a brick. Everyone gave thumbs up on their food, but the chicken under a brick was pronounced "just ok". The fried chicken was really, really good and the meatloaf was said to be "extra flavorful and not typical". I think the only thing I can say wasn't great was the service. I know it is a tough job, but our waiter seemed pretty unhappy. He wasn't engaged with us, let our glasses sit empty, didn't have suggestions when I was looked to liven up the mac & cheese (had seen lobster on the online menu and was sad they didn't have it). He seemed annoyed anytime we asked for something and was not excited when we decided we wanted dessert. I have been a server and I don't expect fake bubbles of joy, but it's nice when your waiter puts in some effort. I will definitely go here again (oh, that fried chicken), but will hope to have a different server next time.

Yelp
I swear Rozzie Square has the best restaurants. I came here after work for an early dinner and it was wonderful. I started with 6 oysters for the buck a shuck deal. They were real good. Not too Briney. Nice and meaty. I should have asked what kind they were. For entrees, I got the Cuban sandwich but subbed out the fries with a Caesar salad. My bf got the pulled pork tacos. The Cuban was massive. It was really good. Crunchy bread. Tender and flavorful pork. A little spice from the mustard. I wish it had more pickles though. It needed more acid. My bf devoured his tacos. He said the apple slaw was incredible. For dessert, we shared a chocolate lava cake. It was a decent size! About a fist size big. It was warm and gooey though no "lava" poured out. I would still order it again. Overall, I had a great experience here. The server was attentive and the busboy as well. He constantly filled our waters. If you can, sit by the kitchen counter. It's awesome watching them work!
google avatar

Lola D.

Yelp
It was really not good. Menu looked promising with lots of options. Seated in a beautiful outdoor patio section. Took the waitress's over 10 minutes to acknowledge us even though she passed us multiple times. Ordered the salmon and steak frites. Steak was over cooked and fries were limp. Salmon has no flavoring but was cooked to a nice medium. The farro/squash/kale side dish really could have been good, but it was just steamed veg and grain with no flavor, salt, or sauce. Really sad meal. Waitress never checked on us and only reappeared when we were finished eating. Won't be back.

Lucy S.

Yelp
Food is not good. The prices are too high for small portions. The place is not great. They need a better menu there is nothing good at this place bring back derners breakfast

Richard W.

Yelp
Fantastic restaurant love the food. Drinks are great as well. Highly recommended. Outdoor dining in the summer.

Timothy D.

Yelp
Love the outdoor patio. Chicken Under A Brick is my recommendation. Excellent service. Great drinks. One of the best Espresso Martinis in the city! Free parking as well as very close to the T. 12 minutes from Back Bay on Needham commuter line.
google avatar

Liz C.

Yelp
LOVE this place. Dylan has been our server a few times and is wonderful. Do you ever go to a restaurant and see how the staff interacts with the customers and think "wow, I want to be a regular here"? That's how my partner and I felt when we first came. The cocktails are wonderful and the food is always amazing. I also love the outdoor dining area. It's so cute and secluded, and each table is spread out enough that you feel like you have some privacy. It's also close enough to everyone else that you can see their food and decide what to order Love this place!

Anthony M.

Yelp
This is our new go-to place!! Excellent menu with an array of choices, food is delicious, and cocktails are simply great. Service is always very quick and friendly, and the patio space is amazing during warmer evenings. We love 753 South!
google avatar

Faye A.

Yelp
Love this restaurant. Even as takeout (thank you Coronavirus), it doesn't disappoint. The food is always spot on, service is great, and all for a good price. Calamari, burger, and fish tacos are some of our favorites, but honestly we've never had a dish we didn't like
google avatar

Yelp
This place just keeps getting better and better. It's one of my favorite places right now. A super unassuming restaurant that sits directly across from Delphino's in Roslindale square. Has a bar with ample seating, open kitchen, and great patio for the summer time. The bar has a wide selection of liquor and wine and good specialty drinks. The food is the star of the show. Can't go wrong with any of the specials. Have gone through and tried most everything and haven't been disappointed. The serving size is large and price is very affordable. Service is wonderful and food comes out quickly. Great for a date dinner or light drink and appetizer at the bar. Easy to see why the locals are all regulars here. (Also....TVs at the bar for those not wanting to miss the game. )

Amanda S.

Yelp
It was a cozy place. Sat at the bar so we had a front row seat to the ins and outs of the kitchen. Didn't love seeing the [precooked] ribs being unwrapped, heated up, piled on with the sauce. Salad personnel visibly flossing her teeth whilst assembling a quick Caesar. Probably won't go back.

Jeffrey T.

Yelp
Not sure what happened this place used to be great. Last visit. Just another mediocre restaurant lukewarm soggy chicken wings, bland tacos, meh burger. Hope it gets better in time to sit outside and enjoy your beautiful patio.
google avatar

Jeffrey C.

Yelp
753 South is a great addition to Rozzie Village. I am always looking for a restaurant with outdoor seating, and the patio here is a welcoming space with plenty of shade for hot summer days. The menu is pretty eclectic, so I'll need more time to try all the different options here - offerings range from Mediterranean platter to a pulled pork sandwich - but for my first visit I ordered the oyster po' boy. It did not disappoint. It was the perfect comfort food I needed after a busy day at work. The fry on the oysters was done well, and the side of fries definitely pleased. The cornbread, however, was the real gem here. It packed a lot flavor, had the perfect texture - good crust on the outside and a soft inside - and the melted butter on top made it some of the best cornbread I have eaten. Definitely order it as a side. The cocktails, on the other hand, could use a bit of work. I found them to be a little weak. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back and seeing how 753 South develops!
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
What a great find! Tried this for the first time last night. The dining space is cozy but it was worth the wait to eat. The drinks were mixed well. It's so nice when bartenders take the time to muddle fresh ingredients together vs. using mixes! The Glendower Gimlet was fantastic! I had the lobster roll poached in butter for dinner. It was really good. Experienced great service even at the bar near the kitchen. Will be back for sure!
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Just great food, service and ambience. We can't wait to go back!
google avatar

Emily N.

Yelp
We went here on a Sunday evening and sat on the patio. The gorgeous weather definitely helped, but the seating area out back was fantastic. Comfortable chairs, not cramped, large umbrellas, string lights, and nice background music playing through the speakers. Service was prompt and friendly and the red sangria was delicious. We had the chips and guac for an app - chips were hearty and fresh and the guac tasted house made. I had the BBQ Pork Tacos for my entree which was a huge portion and very tasty. We will absolutely be back! The inside seating area looked very comfortable as well, with regular tables along with bar seating and kitchen-view seating. Their Facebook page notes live entertainment on Wednesdays and Buck-a-Shuck on Thursdays. We will have to come back to try both!
google avatar

Rosa V.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is excellent and the atmosphere was also fantastic. My friend and I sat at the patio which was to my surprise really big we had the fried chicken which was excellent.
google avatar

Kim G.

Yelp
We have tried this place multiple times because Roslindale needs some good eats. In the end, the food is very basic American, the service mixed, and we walked away each time feeling the bill wasn't worth the quality of what we received. In fairness, it might be that we are just not a good match with the food demographic that they are trying to attract. Sooo wish there was more creativity and sophistication here as we are literally one mile away but will be driving to other places further away.

Emily M.

Yelp
Lovely courtyard seeing. The flour tortilla nachos were excellent as were the cocktails. Out server, Rachel, was excellent!!! We'll be back!
google avatar

Ellan Lou E.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I love this restaurant. The service is great and the staff is very friendly. Not to mention that the food comes to you so fast! We've only been here 2 times but trust me, we'll be coming here more and trying out every dish. So far my favs are the calamari, the mashed potatoes, and the chicken under a brick! Can't wait to try more!!
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
Really great place, that might give Porter Cafe a run for its money as our go-to weeknight dinner spot. The polenta twinkie is a great choice for a signature appetizer. Crispy outside, good balance of cheese filling and polenta, tasty sauces. Thumbs up! I had a delicious, generously sized cuban sandwich. Good fries. Overall, it's simple food done well. Server was a bit inexperienced but friendly and attentive.

Peggy G.

Yelp
My third visit, I got the fish tacos as I had them at a prior visit and loved them. This time my tacos had cilantro although it was not listed as an ingredient for the fish tacos ( but is in the steak and chicken ones) and wasn't on them at my last visit. I am intolerant to cilantro so I was disappointed and although I removed as much as I could I could still taste it. It was a group gathering so I didn't say anything and just pulled out as much as I could. Also the wine I loved last time was no longer on the menu in person but still listed on the online menu, and I really didn't like the replacement. Otherwise lovely place, beautiful patio, overall nice experience with great friends.
