TL; DR - It’s really good! (Food + service)
I ordered a double with fries and a Mexican Coke.
The burger itself was great: smashed patties, American cheese, dill pickle chips, and grilled onions on a Martin’s Potato Roll. The beef was well salted and still juicy, despite being smashed. That said, if you like the lacy, crisper smash burger, this isn’t what you’re looking for, but it’s still really good.
While the burger was excellent, next time I’d get it with raw onions instead of grilled, some extra pickles, and maybe I’d see if they could do a well-done toast on the bun. The grilled onions, cheese, and juicy beef result in a very flavorful, but fatty burger that could use some textural contrast as well as flavor contrast to highlight the strengths of the beef and cheese.
While I generally prefer a Martin’s Potato Roll, given the flavor of the beef, cheese, and onions together, I found myself wishing for something sweeter to lift and separate the flavors a bit. I’m usually against a brioche bun, but for this burger, I could see a nicely toasted brioche bun adding a little texture and some of that contrast I was looking for while lightening things up a bit. Maybe even helping to absorb some of the juiciness from the beef.
Other reviewers have mentioned the fries, which I generally agree with. I don’t know that they’re over-processed, as one reviewer mentions, but I do wonder if 1) these fries aren’t made with russet potatoes and/or 2) if the potatoes are salted before being fried. I wonder because while the fries are golden and crispy, they’re more creamy than fluffy inside, and denser, or not as light as I personally prefer.
As a result, the longer fries tended to break, rather than bend. Even so, they’re fried well and are well-seasoned, but the saltiness seemed more in the flesh of the potato than on the outside.
I didn’t try any of the sauces, but I was happy to see that they have Heinz ketchup, rather than Hunt’s, or something artisanal.
The space is tiny, so I recommend takeout only, unless you’re a single diner, or max, 2 people. There are 3 stools at the indoor counter, though the counter is very high compared to the stools, and narrow, not much space to put food and definitely no space for bags or jackets to hang.
Outside there are 2 small 2-top tables, 3 chairs, and a bench.
All in all, I’d definitely eat this burger again, but I can’t say it’s my favorite. I do think that it’s well worth the price. Other positives include the service, which others have mentioned (in my case, the woman at the register said she liked my haircut and that it suited my face, which I hope is true, but even if it’s not, wow, what a thing to hear ❤️).
Like I said, I liked it, though it’s not my all-time favorite, but I’d recommend it and would gladly eat here again.
