Step into 8-Bit Bites for a nostalgic blast from the past, where smash burgers, tater tots, and classic games collide in a vibrant retro playground.
"8-Bit Bites is a rather unusual smash burger chain. It was founded in 2023, and now boasts seven locations, five of them in New York City. What’s the name mean? It refers to the technology behind video games in the ’80s and ’90s, and each table in the restaurant has a video screen tapped into 2000 classic games, including Mario Kart, Street Fighter, and Pac-Man. Play is free for customers who purchase any of the eats, which include loaded fries and tots, milkshakes, snack wraps, and chicken tenders, and sandwiches, in addition to smash burgers in mainly predictable configurations. Note that all meats are halal. One of the more interesting burgers is the Flying Dutchman ($8.50) — double smash patties, American cheese, pickles, and “cheat code” sauce, referring to a combination of numbers, buttons, and passwords used by aficionados to gain an advantage in a video game. Most notably, the burger is bunless, substituting two slices of sauteed onion for the buns. Use plastic gloves (provided) when you eat this thing, which is delicious aside from being almost too slippery to eat." - Robert Sietsema
