Fowl Mouth - Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"The chicken-focused food truck, Fowl Mouth, recently opened at The Far Out Lounge near Slaughter and I-35. The menu has a variety of wings and tenders, but the star of the show here is the fried chicken sandwich, topped with shaved kale and pickled jalapeño aioli." - Nicolai McCrary

Yelp
The 1 star is for ample outdoor stinky bathrooms. They have more bathrooms than parking spots. Parking help, "If you can't park here, there's no street parking and you'll get towed everywhere... you would have the same problem downtown..." No. They have parking garages downtown. Happy to pay for parking. They should revamp parking. Again, happy to pay. Would be great to prepay with my ticket! They know parking is an issue and they just don't care. Essentially, got a "Sucks to be you" from the door people. Thanks to parking, we missed the opening act. And FYI, HEB has a guy looking for parkers to tow. And yes, Uber would have been great... if they came out to where we live. But they don't. The food trucks looked good, but we ate elsewhere while on the search for a place to park. General consensus from the food trucks was that parking was terrible and this impacts their sales. Beer was overpriced and you had to stand in line for 45 minutes. Consensus in line was that the place used to be great, but it's gone downhill. Not sure if management changed from when one guy sold his art there, but he was no longer a fan.

Yelp
One of my fave places to check out live music. Gritty (in the best way possible) and raw, this joint brings all the goodness that surrounds seeing a decent show. Live performances are spot on with sound. Nice stage with room to dance. Good drink prices and good service.

Yelp
We drove in from Houston to watch Still Corners and Alvvays at the Austin Psych Fest here at Far Out. The venue is located in South Austin but they have a decent sized parcel of land to fit a few hundred folks for an outdoor concert. Parking was a bit of an issue but we parked half a mile away and walked over. It was raining during the day but luckily the ground wasn't too muddy thanks to some of the gravel lying around. The sound design for the smaller stage isn't the best and the larger stage has a bass projection that's a bit heavy in a particular direction, but for a mini music festival, it's a pretty cool spot and well organized.

Yelp
On a balmy summer/autumn evening with a group of friends, this place is fantastic for a chill music venue. There's loads of seating and open space, welcoming in dogs as well, and even a little clearing in front of the main stage to dance, if the music so moves you. Reasonable parking if you get there early, or just drop your car at the nearby HEB and walk a block, if you need to. Cover charges are highly reasonable, usually around $5 - 10 for a lineup of 3 - 6 bands. Don't bother paying in advance to avoid online services fees though. However, there's no food on sight, despite what the website would have you believe, so plan on heading across the street to Torchy's or Michi Ramen if you get hungry. Cocktails are limited and extremely weak; beer might be the better choice, but never my preference. Don't forget the sunscreen and bug spray. You can fill in the blanks there.

Yelp
Came to the Far Out Lounge for the Big Texas Metalfest this past Sunday, and had a great time despite the heat. Every staff member I spoke with was so kind and accommodating, so I don't understand the previous reviews saying otherwise. Getting into the venue was super fast, no lines at all, which is impressive considering we arrived just after opening, and also had to leave and come back a couple hours later, and never waited for entry. Drinks were reasonably priced given that it's a music venue, and there was also a free water station. The only minor critique I can give is that I wish there were tents for shade in the VIP area, and the bathroom trailer in that section seemed to have low water pressure, because it was a bit of a hassle to flush the toilets. Otherwise it was a great time, and I'll definitely be back in the future.

Yelp
Played here on Saturday night and had a great time! The staff is kind. The sound was good. I played festival style in their outside area and it was real nice outside. I'd play here again.

Yelp
Fun and open set up. We lounged in the outdoor couch and enjoyed a great relaxing experience. Curious and lively crowd everyone we've visited. Drinks week priced and service is great.

Yelp
Took over 45 minutes in line to get a drink. The bathrooms are outdoors, beat to shit and smell. A large portion of the grounds are covered in large crushed rock. The kicker is a couple grand of investment could solve all of these complaints. Idk how they book talent in this city with all the amazing venues we have.

Yelp
I have been to Austin many times and I hadn't of this place. I only found out about The Far Out Lounge because of the Do More month service. For only five dollars a month I get free tickets offered to me randomly via email. I was offered two free tickets to a show happening at this place. This place is huge and has plenty of seating near the food trucks and the stage. The parking situation was good and the employees were very friendly. The bar had a lot of beer on tap and also cocktails on offer. The Press Kitchen food truck was my choice of the night and they didn't disappoint me. I got the classic burger with no onions(onions are the devil) and extra pickles(pickles get you into heaven). The burger was delicious and it came with a bag of chips. I'm happy that I drove from San Antonio to check this place out.

Yelp
Bartender Austin was super cool and loved the live music. One of the best live music venues in Austin. Great bar

Yelp
The Far Out Lounge is like THE classy and cool big sister to The Lil Darin' a lot more welcoming, diverse and fun! It's definitely pretty far south, but you need to check it out. There is parking onsite although the lot is decent sized but usually so full, so I recommend taking an Uber. There's live music all throughout the week and they have events popping off all the time. Mondays they have Motown Mondays--the musicians are fantastic! Motown hit classics from 8pm-10pm. There are food trucks onsite and there's usually a henna artist as well.

Yelp
This place is a gem. I am so in love with Far Out that I almost hesitate to tell people about it because I want to keep it to myself. Joking, sort of. I started frequenting when bars opened back up in 2020. I love the outdoor seating, it's spaced out and gives everyone plenty of space to social distance. The drinks are always good, the bartenders are all friendly, and this is the best spot to meet to socialize OR find a corner to be alone. That sounds strange but grab a book- a Paloma- and have an amazing day sitting outside. What really makes this place shine is everything they have going on with their events. I've seen Selena cover bands, Emo nights, discovered new musicians here. The food trucks are a blessing here, I never realize how hungry I'll get after hanging out with friends all day having some drinks. Birria tacos? YES PLEASE. The markets they host are always amazing, I have found some of my plants, jewelry, and vintage clothing here. Shout out to the Bartender who gave me a Far Out Lounge enamel pin. I'm obsessed, seriously I love it so much. (I complimented hers and she just handed me one, I'm telling y'all they are so friendly here!)

Yelp
Great stage but VIP tix are a rip off, not enough seats so you still have to stand, then you can't see any better anyway. Bathrooms only marginally better at best. Drinks are expensive and for psychfest on Friday night there were NO food trucks as promised. Lots of music venues in town so pick another one than this one.

Yelp
What a treat for a weathered man like myself to attend none other but an electronic show at the far out lounge! My bedazzled pant was flowing in the wind on the subtle patch of grass. I firmly grasp the water balloon and hurl it into a man's face, he is thankful rather than angry! What a time. The wife enjoyed the vodka lemonade. Cheers!

Yelp
I came out here for the South Austin Comedy Show hosted by Brian Gaar. Definitely a fun venue with a stellar atmosphere. Drinks were reasonably priced for ATX and the outside stage setup is perfect for a spring/summer evening. Absolutely coming back out again.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
Was initially going for a Yelp event; but they were out of the birria tacos by 7 I stayed for the entertainment. I'm definitely inviting my girls out here one day, it seems pretty cool and the weather is getting nice and cool so outside entertainment is on my to-do list!

Yelp
We've come several times over the past two years, and it always feels like we've travelled back in time compared to the live music venues downtown: The clientele is diverse and slightly older---lots of full-time musicians supporting their friends, and older hippies from the suburbs. Not as many tourists, tech bros, and students as one would find downtown. The staff are all very nice, and the cover is usually a flat $10, which is very fair. Mixed drinks are $10-12, which is reasonable, although beers are not a great value at $8+ The food trucks are convenient and not too outrageously-priced, although better dinner options are easy to find nearby in South Austin. The sound system is a little distorted and grainy, although it has improved some in the past year.
google avatar

Clint S.

Yelp
What an absolute fantastic time we had this evening. We attended a Yelp event which was incredible. The space was perfect with lots of outdoor seating and tables, the drinks were strong, and the attendees and live entertainment were absolutely incredible. Thanks again to the Yelp team for another wonderful event, and even though it's on the other side of town, we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
I had a great experience here while visiting Austin. My friend brought me for a Motown Monday! Firstly - Matchmaker Band is INCREDIBLE and I would love to see them again! The space is great. There is an indoor bar and lounge area, but the outside space is really where it's at. It's a huge backyard area with a stage and vendors and an outdoor bar. Lots of seating and a dance floor. The band had pretty much everyone dancing, it was impossible to resist the groove. There was a really diverse mix of people from all age groups there which is something I certainly appreciate and enjoy. I ordered a Paloma and a Vodka Gimlet from the outdoor bar, and they were both great. The prices were to be expected at a bar when out, at least that's what I'm used to in the Orlando area. There was also water stations available to stay hydrated, which was nice given the heat! If I lived in Austin, I think Motown Mondays would be a regular thing for me! I really had so much fun here. Some of the other reviews of this place have made me laugh. Know you're going to an outdoor music venue bar with a very "retro" vibe. If that's not something you enjoy, then I wouldn't visit here. I personally look for the most unique and authentic places to visit every time I travel - and this place is an absolute gem in my opionion.

Yelp
Don't come here!!!!!! Don't come here!!!!!! Horrible experience!!!!! They charged me for 6 invisible drinks Don't come here!!!!!! They are rude, gross, and unwelcoming
google avatar

Yelp
Eff you see kay, this place. Boring. No soul. Dead hipster joint with the kind of people that are needing to be right on everything that they perceive as truth. Additionally needing to feel that they're in their own environment and in a kind of place that attracts their own kind of crowd. Won't be back. Pretentious, fake and unwelcoming.
google avatar

Yelp
The Far Out Lounge and Stage is the best new piece of old Austin. (I wonder if they'd want to trademark that?) seriously though, in the midst of all the commercialization that's taking over the city, Far Out is doing a great job of keeping a true creative spirit alive. They have live music every night of the week, and they're not just bar bands playing covers, their staff has always been professional, their venue is well-designed (and clean!), their food trucks are worth showing up hungry for, but none of it feels like it's trying too hard to exploit Austin cliches and cash in on the new money on the city.
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
Cool venue with a lively atmosphere w/ the Austin vibe. Drink selection is a little on the light side but good enough. Great food trucks as well! If you want to catch some great music, try here!
google avatar

Shradha A.

Yelp
Thankfully, Austin has something to offer to everyone in terms of live music venues. You have to try a few out to find your own vibe and sound. We were here on a busy evening, with the parking fully full (well, they were saving spots and I would like to think that was for the band, not just buddies). The venue is smaller than a few others in the area but it was a big band and quite crowded. I was put off by the "hard selling" by some of the vendors and wish it was more chill to walk around - maybe without the pressure and guard up I would've actually bought something. The food trucks close early-ish and run out of food quickly. The food we tried we weren't impressed by. The line was insanely long to get a drink so we had to skip that part altogether.

Yelp
My neighborhood haunt. If you are looking for live music in South Austin this is THE spot. I have seen some amazing talent here, lots of local homegrown sounds emanating from the stage. Sundays are fun, food trucks are great. I recently saw an amazing psychedelic rock show here, it was on a Friday night, quality music for a $10 cover. Ample space outside. Throughout the pandemic this has been a business that has had live music while being very cautious with ample steps in place, enforcing masks and social distancing. I have met some cool people here. This place also has some really interesting history, being a notorious biker bar back in the day. Come check it out!

Yelp
First off, what a great space. The HUGE outdoor lawn, multiple bars, vendor booths, cozy indoor space... it gives your everyday $10 show a music festival feel. Unfortunately the experience was soured by the sound quality. The first band of the night I just couldn't hear the guitarist or keyboard player AT ALL. The guitarist would go into a wailing solo, looked like he was totally shredding, but it was like watching a YouTube video with mute switch on. Drums, bass, and vocals sounded great but you couldn't hear anything else. As respectfully as I could I waited till after the set and approached the girl working the sound board, "I'm really sorry to bother you but is the guitarist mic'd? Because I can't hear him at all". She looked at me, shrugged her shoulders, and walked away without saying a work. Ohhhhkay. Second band comes on, STILL can't hear the guitar or keyboard. By this time our group is pretty frustrated by the experience. These bands seem like they'd be great but they're getting ripped off and don't even know it. A friend approached the person at the sound board again saying she couldn't hear the guitar, and this time she said "wow that's weird that YOU can't hear it". Putting the problem on the audience instead of herself. Finally the third band comes on and luckily they knew well enough to do a quick sound check. Immediately the singer and guitarist are calling out the sound person saying "more guitar, more keys, more, more, CRANK IT!". And finally, we got a set of music that you could actually hear as the band intended, and it was GREAT. I so appreciate the amazing venue, but in the end I think most of us are there first and foremost to enjoy the music which is hard to do when the person responsible for the sound just doesn't give a shit.

Yelp
LOVE THIS PLACE. Amazing hang spot with killer live music, vintage markets, multiple food truck options (the catfish fried chicken from Fowl Mouth is my fave), and tons of seating in their huge yard. Tons of drink options and the cocktails are great, two very clean bathroom options. Make sure to order your food a little early (they miiiiight run out of exactly what you want if the place is busy). Super dog and kid friendly--this place has tiny-weekend-festival vibes and I'm so stoked to go back!
google avatar

Curt C.

Yelp
Far out, dude! This place is like a divey outdoor concert area. I came here for a music festival, and had a great time! There's a small indoor bar that seems like it serves up drinks for the regulars, especially during the week. The inside sure looked divey, but had a working bathroom and cold drinks in a clean atmosphere. This music venue is a far out place in the Live Music Capital of the World! Outside, there are picnic tables set up around a stage, outdoor bathrooms, and a stage under a tent where they could have two acts going. Vendors lined the exterior of the area with lots of giveaways and fun prizes and stuff to buy. There were a few food trucks too! There's some places to sit in the shade, which is always nice if you're going to be outdoors drinking. The place is painted up to look all far out, and there's sort of a far out vibe going on here. It is rather far out- south Austin! SoSoCo! There's a big lot next to the place that's easy to park in. Prices were fair, considering that it was a music festival. They do serve Lone Star Beer.
google avatar

Mariel V.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the Biker Bar look outside, this place is a gem for East Austinites! I heard it's the only legit bar in this side of town. Word in the street us this was an actual divey biker bar before it was turned into this bar. Once you get to their back patio area, you'll be blown away by how cute it is. So-totally-Instagrammable!!! There is a food truck in the back (HopFields) and their food is amazing! We got their burger, chicken sandwich, fries and mussels and we all ate them up so fast! They ran out of boiled peanuts, though. That would've completed my day! There is a stage for live music and it looked like they were setting up but it rained so we ran inside. Give this place a go!
google avatar

Susan B.

Yelp
This is such a wonderfully Austintacious place! The outside stages and seating are so laid back and the music is always good. It is also cool that there are vendors selling clothing, plants, jewelry and original art. And don't forget to go hungry and hit up the food trucks. Yummmm.

Billy R.

Yelp
New stage is pretty epic. It is outside so be prepared for weather, but I have a great experience every time I go!

S M.

Yelp
This place is garbage, easily the most poorly managed venue I've ever seen. I've got nothing else to do than post on yelp while I wait 40+ minutes to get a beer. My friend waited more than that at the *one* food truck only for them to run out of food. You can smell the porta potties from 50 yards. Just impressive how unbelievably terrible this place is. Absolute trash, avoid if at all possible.
google avatar

Albert G.

Yelp
An indoor/outdoor bar that captures what is left of the old Austin spirit. A lot of food truck options and I also love how they let local businesses set up shop. Plenty of space to catch an outside show and the stage is big. Restrooms are in far back to the right of the stage. Inconvenient if you're on the opposite side of the grounds. When I ordered my drinks, the bar tender decided to check her make up after I was waiting in line for 15 minutes. Something flew into one of our drinks and the bar tender put her finger in there to take it out. Then she STILL tried to serve me that same drink. Like any yelp review, it's strictly based off the persons experience. I would still recommend this place to anyone who wants to go back in time when Austin was weird and SOCO was the place. Show Seen Here: Bikini Kill/ Hunx and his Punx
google avatar

Mister C.

Yelp
Don't go for Psych Fest! Unless you're prepared to wait in line for over an hour in the sun for the only food truck available until later in the evening.... Draft beer is also a very, very long wait. I'm missing all the music!!
google avatar

Farrah A.

Yelp
Such a laid back bar, small music venue and outdoor event space. Oh, and with a 'dash' of food truck park. My gal pal and our dogs paid a visit on a *beautiful* Saturday morning for micheladas, Ranch waters, Topo Chicos and all the breakfast tacos! Casual brunch is a popular thing there, and they have a featured menu displayed throughout that many were indulging in. They also had outdoor kiddie yoga going on; def check in to see if they have any plans for adult yoga. There's plenty of green space to run around with your kiddos, or dogs (leashed, of course); and I do appreciate how dog friendly they are. Bowls are provided and the staff is really friendly.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
Outdoor oasis for laid back drinking, food trucking, and live music-ing. Bartenders were awesome and friendly. Music was awesome. Pro dog. They told me they do yoga on Sundays at 10am. RSVP ahead of time if that's something you're interested in...they mentioned they're getting VERY popular now that folks are looking for safe outdoor excursions.

Yelp
LOVE. THIS. PLACE....LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! It's one of the only south Austin bars that we don't mind driving to. The staff is incredible, the space is amazing, and the beer/drink selection is AWESOME! At first glance, the main entrance is almost like a welcoming little living room bar, with comfy couches, small seating options and a small bar. But walk through the back door and you are introduced to a whole new oasis!! The back yard is absolutely gigantic, and has two stages, one main stage and one event stage. There are ample picnic tables with umbrellas, tables and chairs all around for everyone, but you are welcome to bring your own as well! There is a second bar out back, with plenty of restrooms, and multiple, delicious food trucks to choose from!! There really is something for everyone here! You cant go wrong at the Far Out, whether you bring your date, your mom, heck, even grandma can find something there!! The BEST part!? They are UNBELIEVABLY dog-friendly!! Not just dog-friendly, like, they are dog-LOVING!!! They not only have dedicated dog events, they welcome them both inside, and out! They have a huge pile of dog bowls with hoses, ice water containers all around, and lots of love to give!! The owner and his wife are absolutely the sweetest, and they are dog lovers too. I see them there not infrequently, and they are always ensuring everything is running smoothly and that everyone is happy!
google avatar

Carly V.

Yelp
This is a cool divey bar, with some delicious cocktails, great beer selection, and live music. It's definitely a unique crowd. They have several food trucks to choose from, as well as some little tents popped up to do some shopping. There are tons of picnic tables and shaded areas. This is a great place to hang out with some friends, hear some jams, and enjoy the friendly wait staff.

Yelp
Amazing spot. Amazing bartenders. Fantastic music and food trucks. So happy during my quick trip to Austin my friend recommended we go here.
google avatar

Christina O.

Yelp
Holy Moly, this place rocks!! My first time visiting was on a Monday - for MoTown Mondays. It was epic! I was blown away at how large their outdoor space is behind the building. Very clean, well maintained and well lit. Perfect set up for larger gatherings. The band was incredible. Water stations were very much appreciated especially after dancing all night long! Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Steffie S.

Yelp
This bar has a vibe very similar to Sagebrush- smaller indoor area than Sagebrush, but large outdoor venue. The "plus" for Far Out is that there is a concrete dance floor outside unlike Sagebrush. I wish the dance floor was larger because it was very crowded the night I went to see The Matchmakers. I love this band and am happy to see them performing away from the closed Highball Lounge. There were lots of beers to choose from out back; the bar inside only had a limited number of beers- so go out back for a variety of choices. Also, parking is limited. If you have a SUV, you'll have better luck parking for free along the side street. There's also $5 (cash only) parking at a sort of junkyard next door. Lastly, there are a couple of food trucks and some shopping in the back as well. Bring bug spray if mosquitoes like you. All in all, it's a rustic, fun, quirky, authentic Austin music venue.
google avatar

Karla M.

Yelp
Motown Mondays! What a great little outdoor venue. Friendly people and fantastic bands! I'll be back here again.

Yelp
We have just discovered this gem. So starved for live music we have been to 3 shows in 3 weeks! Outdoor venue with plenty of table or Adirondack seating in the sun or under the trees or tent. I love the tent colors at night! Dog friendly with a large grassy area to stretch your legs. Friendly bartenders. ( I'll leave the food truck reviews to another post but don't order pizza from the Italian sub place. Like a biscuit pizza from the 70s with unflavored tomato sauce.) Shows are reasonably priced at 5 to 10 dollars and there'sa parking lot. What a great way to spend a few hours. Old, young, hipster , rocker and weirdo music lovers unite at this unique Austin venue.

Yelp
Backstory: I had never been here before even when it was Red Shed Tavern and had it bookmarked on Yelp. I knew that the Red Shed was a dive bar with an outdoor area. Nicolaza's definitely came in to change that. I met up with a friend at Nicolaza's for a few drinks to catch up on Valentine's day. What a crap holiday. Anyway, the bar had only been open for a half hour or so, so it was a little dead with more people showing up after 5 pm. Overall the bar inside is nice, you can tell it had been recently renovated and updated. There are I believe 3 bathrooms (unisex or now known as gender-neutral rooms). What's weird about this, is the bathrooms are not labeled but instead are painted teal with small decorated mirrors on them. There was confusion if you had never been as a few different patrons asked. Future note to owners: you might want to add signage. I didn't go outside but there is an area to enjoy the weather and drinks. I had read in the future there will be food trucks for eats. They have a cocktail menu ($9-13) and draft beer/cider.
google avatar

Raquel G.

Yelp
I had no idea a place like this even existed !! We came here for an art show . I love the atmosphere of this place . I won't go into too much detail so you can experience it for yourself . Once you do find this place you almost want to keep it to yourself ...... I will definitely be back when there isn't an event to get the full experience

Yelp
This is my second Sunday Brunch here. Love this place and the staff. No problem parking and the food trucks are delicious. The music is top notch and they are totally dog and child friendly. Outside under a tent or under the trees. Totally open air.
google avatar

Yelp
100% improvement from the old attitude. Those who know... know The staff was very friendly and not the fake way. This is a humble place! Scottie the food truck chef is a bad ass! Amazing Chef! and a cool dude. I watched as he accommodated a large birthday party who was prepared to order in for pizza. The stage is FINALLY being utilized for live music. I will very much be a part of that. A lot of crybaby reviews on here. Don't whine in to it. Use your own brain and check it out. Cheers y'all

Yelp
Happy there's something here! A welcome neighborhood addition, much more suited for a good neighborhood bar than Red Shed ever was. Decor: The seem to be going for an Art Deco thing. LOVE the wood & gold barstools! They painted the interior a bright white, which is a vast improvement over the murky, creepy vibe the Red Shed had. The silk flowers are a bit tacky... i get the idea of decorating with fake flowers, but these are the cheap, pastel bargain bin Hobby Lobby ones. The more realistic ones have a better impact, just don't use as many. Also the pool tables are no more. Drinks: lots of interesting beers on tap!! My cocktail (the Meil de Amore) was okay.. the strawberry shrub that was supposed to be in there did mot come though at all & the overall concoction was a bit syrupy. A bit too pricy, for a middle of the road drink. Especially for one in the middle of nowhere South Austin. Overall: pretty good. I think they'll figure out their stride at some point. It's a bit all over the place, but has great potential
