If you’re exploring Penang’s legendary food scene, 888 Hokkien Mee is a name that often comes up — and for good reason. Open only from the late evening until around 9:30 p.m., it’s not exactly day-tripper friendly, but if you can stay till dinner, it’s well worth the effort.
The first thing that hits you is the aroma rising from the bubbling pot filled with pork, pork intestines, and prawns — all lending their rich flavours to the broth. The soup itself is incredibly flavourful and leans toward the spicy side, which might be a bit much for those who prefer milder tastes, but it’s heaven for spice lovers.
A bowl here comes generously topped with prawns, thin slices of pork, half a hard-boiled egg, and tender pork ribs that practically melt off the bone. The final touch of crispy golden-brown shallots adds depth and crunch, tying everything together into a truly satisfying meal.
We also ordered the char kuey teow and omelet, and both were solid — holding up well to the high standard Penang is famous for.
