My husband loves this place because it is dimly lit, as he feels all restaurants should be. We have been here occasionally over the last 10 years that we have lived in Rockridge.
This time we made a reservation for Valentine's Day dinner, arrived a little bit early, but the hostess was able to seat us right away.
Not all of the tables were full during our dining time. There were a few people sitting outside in the parklet, although it was cold and rainy out. The space is bigger than you think because there is a back area as well as the front and now the parklet.
Our waitress was a very kind and smiley. She brought us menus, the wine menu, and a special Valentines menu. It is dimly lit, so you might have to whip out your phone flashlight if you have troubles reading.
We both tried cocktails, and I liked mine better, it was called face dancer and came in a fancy coupe glass. And during dinner, we had the driest white wine that they had in stock for the day, which was confusingly called pecorino.
We were offered still or sparkling water. We ordered olives which had a generous heap of a variety of olives in oil and garlic. Then, the white bean salad had a good vinaigrette. The Georgian flatbread is topped with cheese and an egg. We think the egg got overcooked because the waitress told us to mix in the egg yolk with the cheese before eating but it was already congealing. Warning: the red sauce that it comes with is super garlicky and we had garlic bread until the next morning.
We also had the tuna, which was nice and raw inside, which I prefer, and came with mashed potatoes. We asked for a box and compostable boxes were provided along with paper bag for take away.
For dessert we had the strawberry shortcake shaped as a heart. We had also ordered some dessert liquor, which they apologized for not having in stock and recommended a different one for us.
Valentines meal was great. The ambience is in between casual and upscale. It was not too loud for a Wednesday night, and there were no kids in sight.
In past visits, we have sat at the bar. They do have an extensive wine list and I remember trying my first orange wine here. We also did a New Year's Eve here with them one year maybe 10 years ago with a big group and sat in the back. I remember there were some trouble with the heaters and the service that night, but it's been so long that I don't remember the details! Service today was great.
There are two unisex restrooms opposite the kitchen. Be careful when you're walking because a lot of staff is rushing in and out. The restrooms do have the locks that indicate if they are vacant or in use, which is very handy!
They also have a mailing list and you can find them on social media although there's not much posted from them. They are known for their happy hour, mussel and fries special which I often forget about so it would probably be beneficial for them to advertise it more!
Street or neighborhood parking is easy otherwise it's a very short walk from Rockridge BART.
