À La Biche au Bois

"Regulars come in droves to this discreet restaurant, which is reminiscent of the good old bistros of times past. In a lively atmosphere, shoulder - to - shoulder with other diners, you will enjoy fine traditional fare (homemade terrine, coq au vin) and game in season, such as wild boar, jugged hare and of course doe (‘biche’ in French), as the name suggests!" - Michelin Inspector

Had a team dinner here, we ordered French dishes and it was great. Can get busy on dinner time, but we booked ahead of time. The appetizer was great, especially the escargot.Their meat specialties are a must try, recommended 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

Google
This was such a a lovely surprise to stumble on! We were looking for a place to eat close to Gare de Lyon and this place popped up. Truly authentic french and probably the best service we had our entire 2 weeks Bc! The servers are attentive and incredibly kind and patient. We had luggage with us, as we had just gotten off a train, and they offered to take it in and put it in the back for us so we didn't have to worry about it while we ate! They seated us at a nice table for 2 outside without a reservation (a Tuesday night at 8pm), and once again could not have been nicer! The food was also spectacular and came promptly. We had the escargot and coque au vin for our main and they were delicious. The escargot were larger than we had previously! Dessert was also spectacular- we ordered the chocolate mousse to share and then went back and ordered the "creme caramel" which is basically a flan after we saw it go by😂 both were absolutely amazing!! Would absolutely go back the next time we are in Paris. Highly recommend for both the service and the food :)

I was stationed in Paris for six months several years ago. I used to come to this restaurant quite often. I came back to Paris and OMG it still has the quality that I remember. If you are in Paris and want to experience a true French cuisine, come to this restaurant. The fix price menu is less than $50 euros and it is worth each penny.

Google
Our first meal in Paris perfectly captured the essence of classic French cuisine. Each dish showcased the distinct flavors of French gastronomy, from meticulously selected ingredients to precise control of cooking techniques, with every detail thoughtfully executed. The sauces were rich and layered, while the texture of the meat was delicate and melt-in-your-mouth tender. Both in taste and texture, this dining experience was nothing short of extraordinary. It was not just a meal but an unforgettable journey into the art of French culinary excellence. One of the restaurant’s signature dishes, the classic French braised chicken, features tender poultry slow-cooked in a rich red wine sauce. The prolonged braising process allows the flavors to fully infuse, creating a dish with remarkable depth and complexity. The result is a sumptuous, velvety texture that makes this a standout favorite among diners.❤️

I was lucky to get a place without booking. It was packed in the middle of the week on a non touristic season. I got a soup for starter and rooster in wine for the main. It was very tasty but too much for one person! This is a dish to be shared! The service was great and the atmosphere pleasant. It is rather expensive.

Google
i really liked this restaurant - it is smaller than it appears when you enter. find out why 😉 food was great and a lot of local guests proof it.

Google
Really popular restaurant serving typical French cuisine. Make a reservation or you will be disappointed. The Prix Fixe four course menu was good value and the food was really tasty. The dining room has an atmosphere and a buzz about it. The staff were friendly even though the were really busy. Great dinner would definitely go again.

Google
It's probably the best dinner I had during my stay in Paris! Traditional French dishes, everything was delicious. Personnel was friendly and helpful. I would definitely visit again if I'm back in town!

Yelp
Excellent atmosphere. Service was tremendous and the food was great. We had the Escargot , Beouff Bourguignon, the filet of Duck and the chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier. Everything was wonderful and service was well timed

Yelp
After landing on a train at Gare de Lyon, we were hungry! Came on a michelin guide recommendation. It's also close to cute colorful houses at Rue Crémieux. Didn't have reservations but came very close to opening lunch time and we got a nice seat in the big window skylight area! It's a small space but filled up quickly with locals. Servers were kind and spoke english. I saw the 27 euro set menu sign so definitely that pulled me in! With the set menu, I started with the chicken gizzard salad. The chicken gizzards were cooked so delicately that it was tender and not too chewy. The main course, a perfectly cooked cod drenched in lots of butter, with buttery rice on the side. To finish, we had the marquise chocolate with english cream - intense chocolately taste! It was definitely a heavy meal and sustained us to walk around Paris for the rest of the day. My friend also loved his steak and said that these were the best french fries. Of course.

Yelp
Fantastic food, attentive service, classic French food and a great selection of wild game. The venison stew was outstanding. Don't miss this iconic institution if you're in the area. This restaurant was so good I went back the next evening by myself to try something else. Poached eggs with blue cheese, pheasant, cheese, and a dessert. All of it was delicious and very reasonable priced. I had a complimentary aperitif made from black current, and something else chilled, that was delicious. The Bordeaux wine was delicious both nights and I'm not even sure what it was but I don't think you can go wrong. Just let them know what you like and it will be reasonably priced and brilliant tasting. The people that work there enjoy their jobs and the owner/manager is a gruff but conducive character originally from Toronto. He is a kick!

Yelp
I bought a ticket to Paris during a bout of full blown midlife crisis. For the next six months before my trip I researched every item I wanted to try prior to going on my fantasy trip and one was to have a proper French "peasant" meal. Basically, a meal that people might have at home if they lived on a farm or in the country. I found that comfort meal at A la Biche au Bois, which means " A Doe in the Woods" for those who want to think more inappropriate things... Well... first, I did not think to make a reservation. MAKE A RESERVATION. They were wonderfully gracious and able to find a place for me, but because I did not think of this, I could have screwed up their seating/ schedule for the night. But after a confused look, they found a place for me... in the middle of the restaurant... as a single woman... not awkward at all and I had the best French dinner I had in Paris. The server was a sweet young man who stated he spoke very little English, but held his own very well. The hosts was kind and understanding. Ok, the food! First course: Escargot, yes I've had escargot in the US, rubbery canned snails until recent farms opened. The thing about escargot is they, truthfully in themselves, don't have a spectacular amount of flavor, it is the ridiculous amount of butter, garlic and parsley that's packed into the shells with them that gives them there oomf and these had oomf, but the snails had an awesome texture smooth with just enough chew to make the bread I plopped them on even more delicious! Second course: Coq Au Vin, cock in wine (teehee) this is meant for two people. You CAN order it for one, but you will look like a glutton like I did trying to get evert last potatoe and carrot down your gullet, like I did. It was rich and I was sure I had given myself gout after I finished the whole this. Don't judge me. I judge myself enough. Cheese course: Do I remember the names of the cheeses? No. Were they good? Yes. Was I too full to try for a dessert? Yes. I truly have nothing bad to say about A la Biche au Bois. But please make things less awkward and make a reservation.

Yelp
A truly special meal in a "real" traditional French restaurant. My husband and I loved this place! Great food, service and ambiance.

Yelp
Deceptively small, this is a heavy weight contender for fabulous French food. It's the real deal de la soupe aux noix. A floor to ceiling mirror makes the restaurant seem far larger than it actually is. (Think a close up of Trump's hands), and even though the tables are linked together like a tapestry there is still enough elbow room to be comfortable. Plus, this may be the best value on two Continents. 33.90 Euros for a set menu of more food than the USC Varsity Football Team could manage in one seating, and yet I did it. The English Menu was the one server who wanted to practice her English and she was terrific. The decor has 60's New Rochelle highlights, but who cares? You came for the food. The Vibe: Open at 7:00 PM and slammed by 8:00 PM with a line down the street as if it was the Stones next Farewell Tour. This place will get as crowded as the Tokyo Tube at prime dinner time, so time your visit accordingly. The Staff: Warm as Poilane Bread. Helpful, charming and genuine in two languages. So, sit back, relax and have a flute of Champagne with a fresh Strawberry to wake up the palate or tip a glass of Chateau Latours 2014 which will go nicely with your Beef or Game or shirt. Just let it breathe while do the same as there will be an onslaught of food too good to leave. Screw the dog. The Food: Yes, it's wonderful. A dozen Escargot de Bourgogne La Donzaine slowly made their way to my table a snail's pace. Lift a shell and see the puddle of Parsley, Garlic Butter and Olive Oil waiting for you and your Baguette. (Much better than lifting your little treasure and realizing you should have changed it's nappies an hour earlier). The Sauce is so good you can forget the Baguette and use a finger. Use two fingers like eating Poi, or simply lilt the pan and lick the thing clean like you're supposed to. The Terrine de Chevueil (Venison with a Foie Gras center) was a heroic slab of something that took three days to make. Four, if you count the huntsmen. Next, came the Canard Savage (Wild Duck) the "Special" for the night, served with extra Sour Cherries and buttery Mashed Potatoes. Most times duck is a typo. But here, it is as advertised. Slightly gamey, but in a good way, it was just ducky. The Beouf Du Poivre was good old tried and true tender Skirt Steak adrift in a sea of Green Peppercorn Cream Sauce. Double Yum. It comes with French Fries for which this place is known, and with good reason. They are uniquely superb. So, let's have french fry talk now. These are creamy on the inside, crisp on the outside and they remained so throughout the entire meal. I thought I wanted the house made Mayo for a dip, but by the time I decided I wanted it, I'd hoovered every damn fry. My bad, and oh so good. The fries were simple and yet complicated, kinda like a part time narcissist. There are no additives necessary for the fries or me. Next came a large tray of cheese to tempt and tease. Go ahead have 10 different slices. You only live once although that might end here. Ponte L'Vec was soft and inviting (think Italian Starlet). Chevre Poivre (Spicy and Worldly). Chevre ave Ash (Like having too much too young). And finally, Cantal which masqueraded as Gruyere but with much more depth and complexity as opposed to a mere nutty afterglow. (Like a Vegas Pro who teaches English during the week at Stanford...many layers. Excuse the reference.) Notwithstanding pants unbuckled after the Pate, it was time for Dessert. Chocolate Ice Cream and Cassis Sorbet which I hadn't seen since the beginning of Haagen Daze and the end of Double Rainbow. The Pruneaux avec Armangac Sauce Vanilla Glace was like a spiritual version of Imodium. If Prunes do it for you (Gods little perfect fruit...or joke) you may hear the commode whispering seductively, "Here's looking at you, kid". Or me, just a regular guy, I will relive this magnificent dining experience often. A la Biche au Bois...Yaw!

Yelp
A standout in a city full a good restaurants. It's located 1 block from the Gare de Lyon station. The staff are lighthearted and friendly and quick to explain the menu in English. Our group of 3 walked in without a reservation and luckily got a table in the back next to the kitchen. The space is narrow (the mirrors on one way playand the tables are very close to each otherS tricks on you!) The prix-fixe 4 course meal is 35.90€ and is the best deal. Escargot (+4€) were not appetizer size but a full dozen! That and garlic sauce with crusty bread were amazing. My second course was Coq Au Vin was flavorful and rich and enough for 2. (I didn't finish). The cheese course was a choice of soft cheeses, bleu cheeses, goat cheeses. You can 1 slice or 1 of each. I suggest trying all because cheese in France is serious stuff. Last was dessert where I chose lemon sorbet abuse I was so full. 3 small scoops in vodka was a refreshing end to a fabulous meal.

Yelp
We had dinner at another hip resto in Paris and met some friends who happened to be from DC (where I used to live) and we asked them what their fave place in Paris is and they told us A la Biche au bois! Its closed on the weekends, but when we found ourselves without a dinner plan on a tuesday night, we headed over to the Bastille (one of my favorite neighborhoods!) and walked in. It wasnt very crowded but the waitress (curly hair!) was the nicest person I've ever met! The place is small, i dont know if you normally need a reservation, usually you should make one in paris. The place is very traditional french (i think?) with reasonable prices! No pretense, nothing fancy, just delicious food and charming service. I was VERY full but couldnt resist the cheese course! Just booked another trip to France to bring my husband here-- he is going to LOVE it!

Yelp
A cute little French restaurant. We ate here on our first night in Paris. I had the grilled lamb chops. It was good, but I thought it could have had a little more seasoning. It came with a delicious slab of herb butter. I just wanted to slather it over everything! I got to try the Le Coq Au Vin. This dish was huge. The chicken was tender and the sauce was so flavorful with mushrooms and potatoes. I loved dipping the bread and fries in the sauce. Service was great for the most part, but it took a little long to get our checks.

Yelp
No frills, yet a must-do Parisian experience. Was fortunate to get same-day reservations for a group of six at this rustic restaurant located in the Quinze-Vingts, just south of Bastille. Excellent, friendly front-of-house staff complemented a hearty menu of winners. For starters, juicy escargots served as willing delivery platforms for pools of garlicky butter. Coq au vin (for two?) came served bubbling hot in a steel cauldron. Chicken was richly flavored; however, make sure to attack the gravy or leftover meat later in the meal - it's arguably tastier as a cooler temperature allows a better appreciation of more subtle flavors. For a lighter option, salad nicoise was superb, with deviled eggs and tuna topping string beans and mixed greens. Make sure save room - two courses after the main, including three selections off of an excellent stinky cheese platter. And then there's dessert - high points include the creme brulee as well as the chocolate mousse. Might be worth ordering the more adventurous options off of the specials menu. This place is supposed to approximate a hunting lodge (taxidermied animal heads on walls), after all.

Yelp
This is SUCH a gem in Paris! Not only did we have incredible meals both nights (DO NOT SKIP on the cheese course), the service was outstanding. Both Mamadou and Yvette are two of the most charming, kind, and warm servers we've ever encountered! This place was bustling with happy locals and foreigners alike. It is worth the trip!

Yelp
All it promised to be ! A parisian bistro serving honest and well executed dishes from high quality ingredients. A real bistro experience with its little tables, busy room, good portions and reasonably priced wines. We took advantage of the seasonal game offerings. The deer steak (pavé de biche) sauce Grand Veneur was perfect with a luscious puree of Agria potatoes (and ....butter) and a slow roasted butternut squash puree made for a great main course. The buck pate (terrine de chevreuil) appetizer was the real deal. The cheese platter too big to handle but we did our best ! The rhubarb tart was textbook perfect too. Either the bottle of wine got us overly happy or it was a truly great meal. You can always try without wine if you want to confirm ! ;-)

Yelp
Just wow. I came here with 2 French friends and we loved it. The owner is such a nice guy, the food is incredible and the service exceptional. Many fresh game specials from pheasant, venison, duck, etc. as well as foie gras and escargot. Enjoy!

Yelp
Great food, but we felt snubbed by the service. We came here for dinner on a Saturday night. It was not terribly busy, but they were near capacity by the time dinner was in full swing. They offer a set menu, including entree, plat, fromages, dessert for ~33€, which is not a bad deal, so we decided to go for it. I'll start with what went well, and follow up with what didn't go so well. We got a couple glasses of red wine, a Lorrain and Verre de vin to go along with a meal full of red meat. Les Oeufs durs Mayonnaise (Eggs w/ Mayo): Ok! I was hoping for deviled eggs, but these are actually just hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half with some mayonnaise piped on top. The four egg halves sat on top of some lettuce and tomatoes. They tasted okay, but I would have preferred the egg yolks and mayonnaise mixture to be mixed together, you know, like an actual deviled egg. The eggs were also slightly overcooked. Also, the lettuce leaves could have been more fresh. Coq au vin Excellent! Deliciously tender, juicy chicken in very generous portions with large chunks of potatoes. The leg meat was practically falling off the bone. The red wine broth was smooth and luxurious. When it arrived in what appeared to be a Dutch oven with a handle, I was surprised by just how large the portion was. Le Filet de boeuf, frites Great! The thinly sliced filet was cooked to a very nice medium rare with some of the meat juices visibly oozing onto the plate, and drenched in a roux. It was accompanied by an entire plate of French fries Fromage Good! Our waiter presented a platter of cheeses for us to choose from. I thought I was to choose just one, but Mr. Joy asked for one of each, and they cut up large chunks of each type of cheese. I particularly enjoyed the aged cheddar and creamy brie. As for dessert, we didn't get any, because they most likely forgot to serve us dessert. First of all, they stuck us in a table outside, which was fine, because it was a nice night out. However, our table was hidden behind a bush, so as the night wore on, it became very apparent that we were out of sight, out of their minds. That was probably why it took a while to receive each of our courses, ~30 minutes for each course. For the mains, I'm willing to forgive that, but after we finished those, it does not make sense to wait half an hour for someone to bring us cheese. After we finished the cheese, our waiter did not bother to stop by our table for a long time. When he finally appeared, it was clear that they forgot about our dessert, which is supposed to be part of the prix fixe menu. Instead of giving us dessert options, he asked us if we were still interested in dessert, which I thought was a strange question, considering it was supposed to be part of our meal. By then we had waited so long, we decided we didn't wait to wait another half an hour to receive our dessert. We ended up waiting a long time to pay our bill anyway. I definitely felt ignored. When patrons say no to dessert, that should be a clear sign that they are ready for the check and ready to leave. We asked for the check, but once again, he disappeared from our table. Finally, Mr. Joy went to pay at the counter. We found that they still charged us the full price of the set menu, even though we didn't get any dessert. By then we were just ready to get out of there and move on with our lives.

Yelp
Best meal we had in Paris! The reviews were correct. 4 course meal for a great price and lots of options. You will leave feeling VERY FULL! Our server was super nice and explained everything in English for us. Not a ton of vegetarian options but go with someone who likes dif kinds of meat! Salmon and salad was great and the cheese platter was really cool. Love this place, old school vibe

Yelp
This place will fulfill your every idea you might've ever had about a French restaurant! It's not a huge place and is actually a bit small, but you sense the warm and cozy atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Even though I'm sure the word about this place is spreading amongst tourists, you'll notice how it is mostly locals who are filling up the tables. The menus are in French only but the staff is very friendly and helpful and will do their best to provide suggestions or assistance. You'll notice a huge platter of cheese getting passed around, tables always filled with bread, and wine that keeps flowing down the aisles... this is truly France! The special Coq Au Vin chicken stew was so hearty and delicious. Paired with bread, it is a must try dish. You'll immediately notice the fragrant wine flavor in it. It's actually a very big portion that can be shared. The avocado and poached egg salad is also a must try, it's just such a perfect balance of flavors and textures. Foie grad was very rich and good but I can't get over the gamey taste of the duck. I'm sure the pre fix menu is a great option but I'd recommend sharing a main course as the dishes are very rich and filling.

Yelp
All you need to know about this place: far from a tourist trap (thank god!), authentic home-style French countryside cuisine, and vivacious atmosphere packed with Parisians privy to the local hot spots. Important info: Closest Metro: Mº Gare de Lyon Only open Monday through Friday; Mondays 7-11pm; Tuesday through Friday 12pm-2pm and 7-11pm. Closed for 4 weeks between July and August, and Christmas week. Book a table to avoid disappointment! Wander the streets of the Gare de Lyon area, you'll find an array of bistros and brasseries that surround you. A La Biche Au Bois is like stepping into your great aunt's house, as you're greeted with warm and welcoming smiles. The atmosphere is lively, as locals mingle, catch up and laughter fills the air. It's an intimate setting, where you get to cosy up with your neighbours. We had a lovely couple next to us, and a large party of young attractive Parisiennes on the other side. Jovial guests fill the dining room, as the waiters provide attentive friendly service. Lumberjack and I opted for the super generous 4-course menu, which was around 25€ per person. This consisted of a starter, main, cheese, and dessert. I opted for the foie gras (I'm a real sucker for it), which had a supplemental charge. Our meaty mains came with an enormous plate of pommes frites, which were divine. They also feature an impressive wine list, which offers a good value for money. After feasting for what seemed like eternity, Lumberjack and I were stuffed to the brim and satisfied. With the food plus a bottle of wine, it came to around 80€. Not too shabby! Overall, it was a lovely experience that made our day complete. The food coma definitely helped in getting a good night's sleep back at our flat.

Yelp
30 euros. 3 courses. Dinner. Do you really need to say more? It's one of those authentic French places - make a reservation but if you're a couple or a single you might be able to sneak in if you get here before 20h00. Some of the staff speak some English but know your French, especially since you are going to have some amazing French food here. Last visit I had coq au vin and ile flottantes apart from a cheese course. Well worth visiting.

Yelp
Great french food! It was our first meal in Paris- we were jet lagged and a bit out of it but they were friendly and the meal was tasty. Fantastic Steak Frites (they cooked it perfectly and the sauce on top was decadent). My girlfriend's salmon was good as well. Very friendly service, we used our best French and they played along with us but also gave us English menus and spoke in English for difficult phrases.
google avatar

Miak S.

Yelp
Service that is authentic, friendly, humourous, matched with food that is amazing. Their fries, like many other reviews point out, is creamy on the inside and crispy on the outside even when they got cold. I think their set menu at 33.90€ is a steal. It comes with 4 courses - and the amazing cheese board is one course. Save space for the cheese board. I left the restaurant almost going to explode. Luckily my hotel is just 100m away...

Yelp
One of the best meals I've had in Paris! The service is amazing from greeting to goodbye. Everything I had was delicious; tomato salad, escargot, venison tenderloin, coq au vin, cheese, bread, mashed potato, french fry, tarts for dessert... everything tasted so good. The wine list is also very nice and obtainable. If you can get a reservation I would highly recommend this little bistro!

Yelp
After reading reviews from other customers we made reservations for A la Biche au Bois. We arrived to a table ready for us outside. The entire menu is in French but we recognized some main entrees and the server and manager/owner both spoke English and were extremely helpful. We ordered the tomato salad as an appetizer. It was fresh and delicious! French bread arrived with a nice bottle of wine. We enjoyed it all. The beef fillet with garlic butter and frites were great. Beef was tender and flavorful. The Coq au vin was tender with excellent flavor. We sampled cheese before dessert. It's a nice touch to the French dining experience. Desserts: creme brûlée and chocolate moose were yummy. A delightful dining experience with excellent service. I would definitely come back when I'm in Paris again. Thank you from Oregon, USA.

Yelp
Some of the best French food with great service. And reasonable price. Highly recommend

Yelp
The star is for the food. The service was horrible - It took them 45 mins to even get our order, another 30 mins to get our checks, and the fact that they don't allow doggie bagging?? Won't come back again. We ordered 2 starters and 2 entrees, but b/c my gf didn't feel well, we didn't finished al our entrees. When we asked for taking stuff to go, the response was simply, "NO. We don't allow doggie bags". Seriously? There are tons of better places in Paris.

Yelp
This is a great find, both for the value and the authenticity. The prix fixe meal is the best €31 you can spend in Paris, so I highly recommend going that route. The cheese plate was the highlight of the evening, and I don't think I can ever eat US cheeses again. They were very accommodating of my wife's gluten allergy too. This will be a definite stop again when we return to Paris.

Yelp
This was a wonderful restaurant, our favorite in Paris during our trip. I searched Yelp day & night seeking a restaurant that would have a traditional Coq au Vin dish to share with my husband who had never had it made in France. I make no claims that I understand what would be truly authentic, but it was everything I was hoping for. The bread (like all bread in France) was perfectly soft & crunchy. We also had the poached eggs in red sauce, a combination we've never really had before & were instantly in love! This restaurant will be on our list every time we return to Paris!

Yelp
Food was great service terrible. My appetizer was good, poached eggs with cepes, and the steak and fries great. Then I waited, forgotten, for 30 minutes with an empty plate in front of me. Finally the cheese came out. I asked for the bill. 45 minutes later I walked out. The couple next to me waited almost an hour for their check. I wasted 2 hours here, no ability to order another glass of wine, or get any service at all.

Yelp
Now that it's getting to be autumn, it's getting to be a good time to check out some of the heavier, more warming traditional cuisine at La Biche Au Bois (the deer in the woods). If it's a cold, rainy night in Paris, it could be a good night for this place. Make sure you reserve in advance because there's often a long wait otherwise. I first learned about this place from a David Liebovitz list and came back a few times since then. My favorite is the cassoulet. If you're a terrine person, check one out here -- they have a whole zoo of animals to choose from. Gluten-free notes: Most traditional French dishes are naturally gluten-free, but given that this does more heavy traditional sauces rather than lighter, more modern ones, you're more likely to encounter wheat flour or breadcrumbs. Don't forget to ask.

Yelp
Great non-touristy option in the Bastille/Marais neighborhood. We were staying nearby on a vacation trip to Paris, partially because our guidebooks (Lonely Planet and Rick Steves) talked up how good the Marais neighborhood is for restaurants... but when we tried some of the guidebook recommendations, we weren't impressed. So then I thought I'd check where the non-tourists eat, and looked for places nearby that were well-reviewed on Yelp, preferably in French. Yeah, I realize the irony of writing an English language review that says ignore the English reviews and follow the French reviews. But that's what we did, and it panned out -- we liked this better than any of the other 3 restaurants we tried in the neighborhood. You can tell that this place is popular just by how packed it is -- they cram a lot of tables into a relatively small place, a lot of chairs under those tables, and almost all of those chairs were full at 10pm on a weeknight. Nothing fancy, normal ambience, the focus was on the food, but the staff was quite friendly and we had a great meal. Recommended.

Yelp
For the lover of game... and absolutely warm and wonderful service. I awaited this restaurant's annual "reopening" following their August vacation and was happily tucked into a cozy table not even a demi-baguette's distance from the next one. This only made it all the more easy to be a voyeur to the dishes we opted not to order. It's not possible to leave this place without a full stomach (and euros to spare). We gobbled down classic terrines and a coq au vin that had been simmering for at least four hours. The couple running the dining room made the whole experience feel as though we were visiting grandma's kitchen for a heartwarming feast. If only the French took to the tradition of wrapping up leftovers, I could have had coq au vin redux the next day... but I'll absolutely return.

Yelp
Wonderful dinner here - great food and fantastic service. The servings are huge, and the cheese platter is awesome. Don't miss the fries and the chocolate mousse. Excellent value at 28 euro for entree, main, cheese and dessert - highly recommended!

Yelp
We had a fantastic lunch. I had the eggs with mayonnaise, that came with lovely greens dressed in a vinaigrette to start followed by steak and frites. I couldn't have the sauce that was supposed to come with the steak, as I am gluten free, but that was no problem! They replaced it with a wonderful shallot butter. My husband started with a fish pâté followed by chicken in a mushroom sauce. Outstanding. We had no room for dessert, which was a pity. Go!

Yelp
A la Biche au Bois near Bastille is a down-to-earth restaurant that I think does really tasty and authentic French food at a fair price. I would definitely go there again. After arriving in Paris and walking along Promenade Plantée, I decided to go somewhere in the evening not too far from where I stayed. I ended up at A la Biche au Bois in the 12th arrondissement. I started my dinner with a special of the day, mixed pâté of pork and rabbit. It was an interesting combination and I did enjoy it together with the nice bread they served with it. I even gave in when the waiter suggested an aperitif - it was my first evening in Paris after all. The drink was based on red wine, mixed with black currant juice and plum schnaps - a pretty boozy way to start dinner. I ordered a white wine as a light option following the strong aperitif. It was not as dry as I would have liked, but it was alright. I wanted to eat a traditional main and went for the coq au vin. It was a rather big portion with a very tasty, rich sauce and tender chicken pieces. The boiled potatoes were surprisingly soft, they were almost melting in the mouth - delicious. I must admit that the pot was a bit too much for me, but I tried my best, while unfortunately spilling some sauce on my shirt... And because I was in France, I could not leave the restaurant without tasting their cheeses. The friendly waiter explained the options they had, and I quite enjoyed the little selection. Towards the end, service became a little bit slow, but overall I did like the atmosphere and the staff. There was one very young waiter, one older one who was never quite happy with whatever the younger did and a lovely, funny waitress. They were all pretty different and having them all around and watch them working guaranteed an entertaining dinner. Really, A la Biche au Bois is a great, rustic restaurant that will fill you up with tasty food, while not being very expensive.

Yelp
I feel bad I'm giving a 3-star review. It's more like a 3.5 star, but definitely not a 4. I ordered today's special: leg of lamb. It arrived in a healthy slathering of the wine-based "jus" and a side of veggie mash (softened green pepper, etc.). The taste was even, but not memorable. I almost wanted to add salt but thought I might just be a typical American who likes my dishes saltier. I'm also beginning to think that I'm not a fan of lamb, so my review might be a bit unfair. Rack of lamb? Love it. Leg/shank? Not so much. There's something dark, and lacking of appealing flavor with leg. My fiancé got the chicken chunks, which I tried. The best I can describe it is that they bought chix breast from a chain grocery store, cut it up in chunks, then cooked it in a white wine-based very light base. I felt the chicken dry (hence the chix breast), vs breast from a whole chicken. The fries were ho-hum. They always taste decent when fresh from the fryer, but they could've used a bit more "crisp" time. The paté was rich, but not creamy. And service was slow. It took some 10-15 min to serve the paté appetizer. The paté was obviously pre-made/sliced, so why does it take so long to put it on a simple bed of lettuce? Anyway, decent fare, but not far from decent.

Yelp
We finally got what we were looking for on our trip to Paris. A la Biche au Bois is a real treat. Welcoming staff. Very cozy and intimate atmosphere. Our server was animated and helpful as we navigated the menu. You can't really go wrong. The courses were all wonderfully delicious. Will be at the top of my list next time I'm in Paris.

Yelp
I had a great time here. It felt like being in someone's home and everyone seemed to be having a good time. I went here before taking a train at Gare de Lyon, so allot yourself a good 2-2.5 hours. I had the oeufs dur mayonnaise and coq au vin. The chicken was dry at parts, but good and hearty overall. The cheese platter is a sight to see when they bring it around before dessert.

Yelp
This restaurant is quaint and authentic. When we're in Paris we always make sure we visit at least once. Amazing french cuisine for a reasonable price.

Yelp
bon gout bon prix . simple. Perhaps the best value in great (french) food in the city. + excellent service. This place isn't the secret it may seem and hasnt been for years, so reserve ahead!

Yelp
I'm torn between giving this 4 or 5 stars. 4 star attributes: Mains - we got duck and lamb stews that were both solid but nothing too exciting. Space - tables were crammed together even more so than usual. 5 star attributes: Price - hard to match the €31 tag for a prix fixe dinner in Paris. Cheese plate! - so generous and delicious, this was the star of the meal. In the end, based on the main meals, I feel like I have to stick with 4 stars. I would still very highly recommend it though! And I hear the game dishes are their specialty, so if I ever have the chance to go back during game season I suspect I might end up adding a 5th star.

Yelp
Went here with my girlfriend while on a trip to Paris. Wild boar pâté that melts in your mouth, a peppered steak cooked to perfection (and cuttable with a fork) with a mountain of pomme frites on the side, a scrumptious cheese board with plenty of crunchy bread, AND a delicate and velvety crème brûlée. Sign me up! Oh, and very large portions (take into account I weigh 200lbs/90kgs)--all for 30 euros a person. That's about as good as it'll get! Do yourself a favor, reserve a table, and go for a possibly life-changing gastronomical experience. Cheers!

Yelp
This is a true hidden gem five star all around restaurant. We start with the friendliness of the staff, the amazing customer service, outstanding french food and really good suggestions of wines. I went there with a friend from Toulouse who strongly suggested this place. It was quite a good surprise.

Yelp
Memorable meal. The Coq Austin Vin is legendary. This is the type of Meal you want when looking for a real Del Parisian meal, the type where if you have one night in Paris, you would be very happy with this being it. At our table we had fioe gras, which is the type served cold with bread, salad with tomatoes was excellent, the placed eggs which was on more of an asparagus bisque (just ok), escargot, lamb chops, steak frites, and the Coq. I saw another table with a ribeye that looked legit. Overall, excellent. Highly recommend. Reservation was easy a weeks or so before. You need to call.

Yelp
It was our last night in Paris and we wanted something, well not touristy. Although we did find this restaurant on one of those "best of Paris" lists, we were not disappointed. Small and intimate with a few tables outside, the place reeks of traditionalism. No pretense. No nonsense. The menu is fairly broad with old school French home cooking. We had the coq au van. Stellar. Rich with flavor and depth. Like someone's grandmother was cooking in back. We also had the cod special which BLEW me away. Simple preparation. Sublime. Fresh Fresh Fresh. The starters were tomato and goat cheese and snails. No comment on the snails because they aren't my thing. The tomato and goat cheese salad, well the name doesn't give it justice. I don't know what they did, but I imagine it is just the ingredients. It was a 10 out of 10. This place is definitely on my list of places to go when we are in Paris. BTW, the wine is well priced.

Yelp
Wow! What an experience! This was almost the most intimidating Parisian food experience we had...not because the staff wasn't friendly because they were. It's just that the menu was so overwhelming and all in French! We had no idea what we were ordering and the staff didn't speak great English. To make matters worse, this wasn't exactly a cheap meal. It was our last night in Paris so we decided to splurge a little. We didn't want to order the wrong thing since it was a little pricey. In the end, we actually got to interact with the owner (perhaps the most jovial person I've ever encountered!) who spoke English and guided us through the menu. We were excited to come here primarily because we were there during wild game season and the venison, boar, etc. did not disappoint. To top off the evening, the owner surprised us at the table with a complimentary round of armagnac (a type so French brandy that will put hair on your chest), which of course he indulged in with us 'cause that's what jovial, French restauranteurs do!

Yelp
Huge portions of real hearty French food. Staff was friendly and accommodating. A great Paris food experience. 2 huge dinners and a bottle of wine for 80 Euros. Highly recommend the walk out of the typical neighborhoods for this food adventure. Be prepared for a cozy squeeze in the restaurant and allot yourselves at least 2 hours for a full dinner.

Yelp
Nice restaurant full of mostly tourists. Steaks were quite disappointing, the cut was fillet and not tender or flavorful at all. In fact quite stringy- ordered rare-medium rare and medium rare-medium. Terrine was decent 4 stars because the service was relatively friendly and the value is quite good. we had lots of wine drinks and dessert.
