The Best Shopping in Paris: 21 Places Not to Miss | Condé Nast Traveler

"There isn't any shortage of history or confections at Paris' oldest candy shop, which has been in business since 1791. The Dolfi family, which acquired the shop in 2000, has since opened up a number of locations around Paris, but the Faubourg Montmartre flagship with its gleaming (and landmarked) green-and-gold façade is still considered the alpha and omega of Paris confectionaries. Don't leave without trying a warm slice of the "Cake aux Folies de l'Ecureuil," a chocolate marble cake with caramelized hazelnuts and almonds." - Lindsey Tramuta

"The exterior of À la Mère de Famille—an emerald-green storefront with more windows than walls—looks like a jewelry box, or rather, a chocolate box; you can see the cakes and chocolates and towers of beautifully packaged bars from down the block. Open since 1761, one of the many pleasures of this particular confectioner is the breadth of old-world caramels, nougat, boiled sweets, and marshmallows. And nothing much has changed inside, either. Taking in the old tile floor, the floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with preserves and syrups, and the elaborate table displays as you make your way to the ice cream counter (go for the chocolate) is an exercise in both nostalgic pleasure and calorie control."

A long-established shop in Paris, perfect for picking up souvenirs. Everything was so cute and whimsical—it felt like stepping into a scene from a movie. The shop was filled with chocolates and candies, and the caramel candies they packed into tins were especially delicious. I bought a lot as gifts. I’ll definitely come back the next time I’m in Paris!

This is one of the most beautiful & French charming chocolate shops with ladders to stock the shelves with the most beautiful & hand crafted chocolates, eye catching displays & such vintage vibes. I stopped in alone for how beautiful this shop was. Every single detail is thought of from the outside window displays to the inside. Breath taking how charming it is.

What a treat! This shop does not disappoint. 264 years of history proves that. The inside is whimsical. So much to see - chocolates, carmels, fresh marshmallows. It was difficult to choose but once you do, you’ll be in heaven. We bought a small box of chocolates and some carmels. Once we paid, we were allowed to sample some vanilla and rose flavored marshmallows. The service was friendly. I’ll be back before the end of our trip.

You gotta check out the caramels. In particular the hard ones behind the counter. The hard ones have and out shell then they melt into chewy goodness. You can save a few bucks if you don't do the metal case and just want to eat em

This time I bought some caramel candies that were being sold by weight behind the register. It's very shiny and beautiful. It's very delicious. The staff were also very kind.

Have you ever cried while eating something!?! Well this passionfruit/raspberry tart made me shed a tear. Perfect balance of tart and sweet. The curd was velvet. The woman that helped me in the shop was very kind.

Very nice historical store for chocolate and other sweets. It‘s a very famous chocolatier but we also bought other nice little souvenirs as nougat.

Yelp
Very famous Paris candy shop, Mere de Famille has been serving chocolates to Parisians since 1761. It was within walking distance from our hotel, so took a leisurely walk on a Wednesday morning. The signage is large outside, and there is a lot of window displays for shoppers. It is not very large inside, and would be difficult to move around if busy. Most of the displays are catered towards tourists, buying gifts to take back home. Prices ranged up to 100€ with beautiful packaging, comparable to what you could get from fine Belgian chocolatiers. You can also get loose chocolates from a variety of bon-bons, truffles, and pralines in the front counter. We ended up getting a small gift of 10 chocolate covered cookies for 13,5€. After the purchase, the cashier gave us a free sample of a chocolate covered wafer...it was so good.

Yelp
This chocolate shop opened up in SEVENTEEN SIXTY ONE! 1761 - the chocolate and desserts all looked great but I am not supposed to have dark chocolate or caffeine. I could have milk chocolate. I tried a sample - dark chocolate with lemon citron filling - it was like a punch in the taste buds overflowing chocolate and lemon and it was great. I couldn't finish the sample though because of the ingredients. The chocolate was all packaged very nicely for gifts and we bought chocolate for almost everyone we know. I'd give this a 4.7 just on how clean and orderly this place is. And the history - it's impressive! Service was decent - we had a teenager or maybe she was 21 or so - and she knew about every product and was not shy with offering samples. I ate marzipan and I now know that I do not care for marzipan. If you like marzipan - they had a lot of it! In 1761 I am sure it was all the rage! I recommend this chocolatier for yourself and for gifts - and for the history!

Yelp
Yummy chocolate and great place to stop at to bring some goodies home if you're traveling to Paris. They have other sweets too in case you're not into chocolate (like me - I know, weird right?). All the goodies I brought home with me were a huge hit with my friends & family!

Yelp
A thousand yes-es, or should I say a thousand Ouis. A girlfriend bought an assortment of bonbons for me from A la Mere de Famille as a parting gift since I was leaving Paris to go back to Los Angeles. It was so enjoyable, the different assortments of truffles, different flavors, the packaging is gorgeous. She also got a box of Easter Eggs for my little son and he was delighted. I tried a bite of the Easter Egg and it was delicious praline in the middle. I really am savoring every bite of my bonbons. I will be back at A la Mere de Famille when I come back to Paris, 100%. Or should I say Cent Pour Cent! I'm on a chocolate high so bisous to everyone!

Yelp
Certainly not cheap, but what chocolate shop is? We came here after walking from Maison Le Roux which was closed for their lunch hour. We bought chocolate bars to bring home as gifts for family; each bar is 6 euros and have a label on the back of each stating what we assume is the "consume by" date. They have boxes of assorted truffles, chocolates, etc that vary in price points and sizes.

Yelp
So much good chocolate! I stumbled in while walking around Paris. How do you not get local French chocolate if you pass by a local French chocolate shop? So glad I did! This place isn't cheap, but neither is the quality. You pay for exactly what you get. And it's not stunningly expensive. I got about €100 Euro worth of chocolate from this place for friends and family back in the states. It was perfect! I didn't want to get some stupid knickknack that somebody would throw away, so why not share the enjoyment of this delicious chocolate? There is a huge, huge variety of selection, so come prepared to be overwhelmed :-)

Yelp
Fantastic boutique. So any choices for "pâte d'amande" (marzipan). Absolutely everything looks worth devoring !

Yelp
Buy twice as much as you think you want. We brought these chocolates home as gifts and people still ask about them and whether you can order online. They do not ship to the US, so while they seem expensive, buy more! The service was kind and patient and the taste is amazing. I still think about the mendiants and the orange chocolate bar we brought back. Sometimes the simplest things are the best. Looking forward to visiting again!!

Yelp
Great chocolate shop, and incredibly busy for the holidays! Often ranked in the top 10 Paris shops, this place is definitely the best ranked shop in Northern Paris. It's pricey, but incredible. Come here for fabulous truffles, chocolate/nut confections, fruit confits, homemade marshmallows, kitchy sculpted chocolate, or just the bars. They have some of the most affordable straight bars around in the artisanal shops, and some of the more expensive confections. Definitely worth a stop for any and all chocoholics.

Yelp
Lots of chocolate and different types of candies (ie marshmallows, chocolate covered orange peels, pretty marzipan shaped fruit confections, nougat, hard candies, taffy-like flavored and more). Prepare to drop some moolah, however, it is well worth it! Run dont walk!

Yelp
I'm not a chocoholic but if I was this is the place I would come to to die! A fantastic array of chocolate, bonbons, nougat, caramels is on display. Boxes of chocolates that you can have custom made as gifts - or treat yourself. The shop looks like a film set with chandeliers, a tiled floor and an wooden cashier kiosk. At holiday times the windows and shelves are full of wonderful seasonal displays - and they're all edible!!! Irresistible!

Yelp
When I went to Paris for a Study Abroad program, my Professor took us to this chocolate store. One chocolate I can truly remember because it was soo delicious was the orange chocolate, which I figured was orange flavored white chocolate. But it was so creamy and smooth and the flavor was so orgasmic in your mouth. Another thing I bought was jam, it was in a about 2 oz container, 5 of them in a pack, with various berry flavors for 9 euros. ::sigh:: I sure miss Paris....

Yelp
I'd heard wonderful things about this place. After all, it's the oldest sweet shop in Paris (possibly France?) and that makes it pretty old. Heaps older than Cyber Candy ;-) And I wanted to love the decor, but I wasn't that taken with it. I thought it was going to be more impressive. Although I realise that we're spoilt by people doing 'faux old' so well, that sometimes when the real thing looks a little understated, we're not as impressed. But there's nice little touches and the decor is charming. Well, that was until I tried the chocolate. I've just finished the chocolate heart I bought. I know it's a bit Valentine's-y but it rattled, and the curious little girl in me wanted to know what was in it. Lots of chocolates! Really good truffle ones! Yums! Fabulous chocolate that made me very happy indeed. I'm just not sure that this is a must visit place. We stumbled across it by accident as it was quite close to our hotel, but honestly, if we were staying on the other side, I wouldn't have been impressed. Even though the chocolate was very tasty indeed. It's not a five star place for me, but if you're on this side of town, you really should pop in.

Yelp
Really good chocolates and a nice shopping experience. The chocolate is definitely of a superior quality - and this is reflected in the price and worth it. Plus they can do customized gifts for special occasions - like inscriptions on the chocolate. Pretty cool - and really yummy!

Yelp
I would have given 5 stars, as this chocolate was quite amazing, and I know why they are such a famous chocolatier. (I do have to say though, as much as I loved the chocolates, my husband was a little underwhelmed by it. So, it all depends on the taste of the person, like anything else, I guess). That said, I am taking the one star off for the customer service. We happened to arrive within about 5 minutes of closing, so they kind of rushed us a long to make a choice. And there are SO many choices (and none of it is inexpensive) so, it's not exactly easy to go fast, unless you only like one type of chocolate and go in knowing exactly what you want. Also, nobody really spoke English, except one guy who spoke a little (which is fine, we were in France, after all) but it didn't help things go much quicker when we were trying to ask questions about the chocolates. They were also sort of smug with us. It wasn't TERRIBLY rude, but we just got the sense they were like, "dumb Americans are here, let's get them out as quick as possible...." even after we had made our selections, there were samples by the cashier. Now, they were closing (they were able to tell us THAT in perfect English) and they had a full bowl of samples. But...they did not offer us one, which we thought was kind of rude and weird, especially since we had spent money in there. Maybe not a ton (about $20) but still - we made a purchase. Oh well...I guess when you make the best chocolate in the world (IMHO) you can be a bit crabby and still stay in business!
