"There’s really only one reason to go to A Valenciana, whether you choose to take out or eat in the old-fashioned dining room: the ridiculously cheap and tasty charcoal-grilled piri-piri chicken, a local favorite. When perfectly done, as it is here, the chicken is moist inside with crispy skin. Wash it down with a beer or two." - Rafael Tonon, Miguel Pires

Came here on Rick Stein’s recommendation. The grilled chicken is sensational - salty, spicy and perfectly flame cooked. Nice wine list too. Nice terrace to sit outside on a sunny day - even if it’s a little loud being next to a very busy road. It’s simple, affordable and delicious.

A traditional Portuguese eatery well known by foreigners for multiple countries. Delicious roasted chicken with salt and lemon/lime made much more flavourful with the additional of their special peri peri sauce.

Came here for an evening meal, we didn’t book, however there was space available. The restaurant is very big and they can accommodate many people, it was busy the whole evening we were there. We tried the tomato salad, with the chicken, rice, chips and peri peri sauce. It did not disappoint, the salad was fresh and the vinaigrette had all the flavour. The chicken skin was crispy with a salty flavour and the inside was moist. The rice was ok, and the chips could have been cooked better. The peri peri sauce was flavourful. For dessert we had the chocolate cake and it was a great way to finish the meal. This restaurant was worth a visit, it is a distance from the centre but the taxi journey was very affordable. Would recommend coming here to try the peri peri chicken.

Wholesome food, cooked with love and serviced by a Queen. Nini brings a new meaning to service with a smile. She took the time to teach us the proper Portuguese way to enjoy grilled sardines. This is a must visit when visiting Lisbon.

Google
get the roast chicken - you will not regret it! Sea bream is also amazing. We came for dinner and then lunch the next day because we loved it so much. Clams were just okay. The fish with rice was also yummy. They didn’t have the sardines when we went. Huge restaurant with so many tables. They spoke english.

Google
I can't say enough about how warm, inviting and friendly this amazing restaurant was. Quite possibly the highlight of our Portugal trip and that's saying a lot. Simple delicious food and excellent affordable bottles of Portuguese wine. Of course we got the piri piri chicken rice french fries and salad. We got a bottle of Portuguese wine for $13!!! Try getting that in the US. In the end we had the rice pudding dessert with a side of cinnamon. A truly memorable meal and a warm and friendly family restaurant. A must when in Portugal!

Google
We went last afternoon and it had quietened down which was nice, it can be super busy over lunchtime. The server was friendly and most importantly the food was amazing. The chicken, chips, rice and salad was perfect for 2 and so affordable. It came to 30€ for all that food and a drink each. We sat outside on the terrace which was perfect on a warm day. Only improvement would be that they forgot the salad so we had to ask again and wait but it came out pretty quick.

This place was Great!!! Sooo Good!! My Wife and I went back in Oct of 2023. We can't wait to go back!! We meet the owner and some of his family as we were all eating lunch family style. We talk about this place all the time. Thank you guys for everything!! The Price was Right!!

Yelp
This was our last meal in Lisbon and unfortunately it was a complete letdown, easily the worst meal of the trip. A homeless man harrassed us outside and we seated ourselves shortly after walking in, without any server there to address us, so we were off to a terrible start. The service actually turned out ok, but the food did not. Ordered one roast chicken that came with french fries and rice, and the chicken was just ok at best. Some parts taste like how a roasted chicken should taste like, however many other parts were wayyyyy too dry. The rice and French fries were extremely bland looking, in color and in taste. We were not able to finish either of the carbs. 2/5 The pork Portuguese style was even worse. Although theres more variety in that there's veggies, sauce, and meat, the taste and texture was horrible. Most of the pork pieces were also way too dry and overcooked, and somehow bland in the middle. You'd think it's better with sauce, but no this sauce is too sour. It's as if it was just vinegar and nothing else. The terrible sauce made most of the veggies including the carrots and olives inedible. We did not finish this dish either, most of it was left uneaten. 0/5 Definitely will not be coming here again, and will be warning everyone planning a trip here about this place.

Yelp
Really great chicken here, I highly recommend! Extremely flavorful, delicious skin, with a bit of a kick to it. The desserts we got were good, our favorite being the almond quindim.

Kanchan B.

Yelp
We came here as my friend Mark has made a list of places to try based on eater.com recommendations, and this place was listed as having really good roast chicken with piri-piri. So we made a booking and super glad we did so cause by the time we left the restaurant later that night, there wasn't a single free table and in fact folks were waiting for tables to open up. We didn't get to sit in the main dining area, but rather a side dining room where there was this long table set up for a family get together. Eliza our server was lovely and we really enjoyed all the food! Pro Tip - you get charged individual amounts for the Bread and a variety of spreads (Sardine Pate stood out, and in a good way), those are not freebies, like you get in US. Yelp 2019

Yelp
Our Uber driver raved about this place and told us it's his favorite restaurant and where locals liked to eat. We decided to gave it a try during our last night in Lisbon and loved it! We arrived early, around 6:00pm and although it was already busy, were seated immediately. Glad we came early because by the time we left, the place was packed with locals and people were waiting by the entrance. The Piri Piri grilled chicken was fantastic, very peppery and extremely flavorful. My wife and I split the full chicken which is cut and presented in a number of pieces. The meal includes a large and delicious salad, rice and a large plate of French fries. Way too much food for 2 people as we hardly made a dent in the fries. All of this for less than 20 euros! They also have a wide assortment of beers, wine and sangria. Our only regret is not dining here sooner.

Yelp
Everyone knows that you need to take a ride on Tram 28 when you visit Lisbon, but no one likes the thought of being stuffed inside the tram like sardines. Not everyone knows that you need to get piri piri chicken when you're in Lisbon... or that you can swing by A Valenciana for some of the best chicken in town and then take a short bus ride (the #742) to the Tram 28 terminus at Campo Ourique where you're guaranteed not just a seat, but way shorter lines than at the Martim Moniz terminus. But back to the chicken first. I arrived at around 1:20 PM on a Sunday and was initially discouraged by the line in front, but then I realized that the line was for takeaway. (When locals frequent a place, you know that's always a good sign.) We were immediately seated on the spacious outdoor patio, which I'd recommend any day over the crowded indoor restaurant. For €18, we enjoyed an entire chicken (the meat was super tender) as well as two heaping plates of fries and rice. I think I could've done without the rice because it wasn't very flavorful, but the fries were a nice touch. Free Wi-Fi is also a major plus.

Yelp
High 3s, low 4s. We wanted to try a new piri-piri restaurant, apart from our usual, on our last night in Lisbon. The restaurant is divided into two, a takeout and a sit-down area. Much like the other piri-piri spots we've been to before, we ordered their 1/2 chicken that already came with rice and plenty of fries and I added a whole order of the "grilled bacon" which turned out to be a slab of pork belly. Now I'm a huge sucker for pork belly so while this wasn't the best I've ever tried, I still devoured it. The chicken, though plenty in serving, could be more flavorful. We're also looking for more jus just like a competitor we've tried. Not the best one we've tried in Lisbon though I appreciate the variety in the menu! I also liked the rice so that's a plus point. Don't forget to dab your meat with generous piri-piri sauce!

Tahini R.

Yelp
On our first night in Lisbon, my friend and I were craving Piri Piri chicken and so we decided to give this place a try after seeing the high ratings online. The chicken was juicy but average. The best thing we had that night was their sangria! Best we had in Lisbon. Overall, it's a nice spacious restaurant with plenty of seats both indoors and outdoors but it felt like a touristy spot.

Patcharee L.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Not only is the chicken delicious but the steak is great too. My go to place. Service is good when they are not busy.

Dami K.

Yelp
I love A Valenciana's Roasted Chicken. It was our 2nd time visiting Lisbon, and the first thing we did this time around was head to A Valenciana for our favorite meal. Do yourself a favor and just get the Roasted Chicken and the artisanal bread. Make sure to try the sardine pate with the bread. It's simply the best combination you never knew you needed to try.

Lis P.

Yelp
Very tasty chicken and nice drinks. Traditional and yummy. We had piri piri chicken, rice, fries, olives and drinks. Everything was great.

Reh L.

Yelp
This place is famous for their piri piri chicken and they did not disappoint. Their chicken was beautifully cooked, with perfectly crispy skin and juicy meat inside. The rice and fries were pretty good, and the piri piri sauce / spicy sauce help give the sides some extra kick. We also got some bread and olives - note that if they bring out something you don't want, just don't touch it and they'll take it away after for no charge - and the bread was great to mop up the sauce / chicken drippings. The waffle cake was also a nice touch to end the meal. Overall this was a great place for some chicken and I would definitely recommend checking it out.

Neha S.

Yelp
5 stars for the chicken in Piri Piri sauce - truly worth the hype!! If you go here, order the chicken and a salad and don't bother with anything else. 2.5 stars for everything else - salmon, boiled veggies, bread, olives, etc.

Anthony C.

Yelp
The chicken was very good but a bit too salty. Have a cup of soup and a glass of moscatel as well.

Yelp
This review is way overdue. We came here in the fall of 2018 since our hotel was within walking distance. It was our first meal in Lisbon as we came here right after checking into our hotel. So glad we came here. We loved the food so much that we ended up going back the next day for dinner. We ordered a variety of dishes but what we were most excited about was the piri-piri chicken which certainly did not disappoint. It was so juicy and flavorful we devoured it as if it was our last meal on earth. We added a little bit of extra piri-piri sauce which was more like an oil that added a little kick. Mmmmmm.... just reminiscing about it is making me hungry. Wish I could easily transport back to Lisbon. We also ordered the beef steak and a side of creamed spinach. With our steak and chicken came also rice and French fries. We had so much food already which seemed to feed up to four people but it was just my husband and I. Everything was delicious we killed everything on our plates (no leftovers whatsoever). He also wanted to order the grilled sardines but unfortunately they didn't have the specific fish available. The friendly waitress and owner said they would serve it to us the next day if we returned in which we did. The sardines turned out to be very tasty and of course we had to get another helping of piri-piri chicken on the second visit. Service was excellent! On both nights there was no wait. We were immediately seated. Our waitress was Lorena both nights and she was so attentive and friendly answering our questions. Even the owner stopped by to chat with us and welcome us to Lisbon. The restaurant seems to be very popular among locals and families as it was busy both nights we were there, but the atmosphere was very friendly and not stuffy. Truly it was one of the best meals we had in Lisbon! Price wise I thought it was good for the amount of food we got. When it comes to eating out, Portugal seems to be cheaper than the other major European countries. Our money went further there. We will definitely eat there again if we have a chance to go back. Just to note, you are given bread, butter, and spread on the table. Just know that it's not complimentary. If you eat it, you have to pay for it. This is common in Portugal. We actually knew about it before going out to eat but we wanted to try the spread at this restaurant anyways.

Mike M.

Yelp
Guessed we were possibly finding a diamond in the rough and we struck gold. Chicken was really good, then we noticed others had also found this out. Enjoyed a good bottle of wine, the other sides were so-so. Service was very friendly.

Joseph S.

Yelp
The food is average but quite overpriced. The service is overbearing. They aggressively try to upsell and then push for tips - very uncommon in Portugal. Would not recommend.

Matthew M.

Yelp
Awesome Piri Piri Chicken restaurant in Lisbon. Huge restaurant with multiple rooms. Bread and butter on the table (note it's not free, they will charge you if you eat it). Ordered a ton of food...chicken, fries, spinach, etc. Everything was great! Served with red wine. Very affordable. Overall highly recommended if you are looking for a nice family style sit-down restaurant!

Geanr L.

Yelp
As usual very hearty wonderfully spiced peasant food done delicious well. Good job sussana.

Yelp
Winner, winner, Piri Piri chicken dinner. There are other things on the menu but people pack this place out just for this one dish they specialize in. This is the only Portuguese dish and flavor that I've noticed is available throughout Europe and now I know why, because it's the best chicken I've had in the entire continent. It's very similar to huli huli chicken but with piri chilli oil instead of shoyu. The creator of huli huli chicken was local 2nd generation Portagee Ernest Morgado who said he used his mom's recipe. Pretty sure after tasting this that his mom must have adapted the traditional piri recipe and mixed in local flavors. So, that must be why chilli pepper water goes so good with it, because they were always meant to be together. This reminded me of home and was cheap on top of everything. Now if I can just convert them over to shoyu and sticky rice...

Mason L.

Yelp
The best piri piri chicken Ive ever had. I was here years ago and a photo popped up on my photos memories page so I thought Id leave a review. Great spot, good service, tasty chicken

Tienmann C.

Yelp
Favorite place for Chicken in Town. Some may know this as "Piri Piri" Chicken (though the Piri Piri here is just a light oil tinted orange with chili, can adds a bit of lubrication to drier pieces but generally inessential for today's chicken). Well grilled pieces brown but not quite burnt - the skin a slightly crispy caramelized latticework of meat juices. Like a perfect roast chicken, just a little less greasy, and quite a bit more smoky. - As an aside, one of the practices that underlies Portuguese Cuisine seems to be caramelization: the slowly induced maillard effect on grilled/roasted meats and fish; but also in the pastry, where flavor differentiation seems to depend on the varying degrees of caramelization of a few common ingredients -eggs, sugar, fat, flour and some nuts and grains here and there...... Also added a half order of the fried (marinated?) Hake, which is a fish I cannot turn down due to its rarity outside of coastal Europe. It's served with the soupy rice with beans -Arroz de Feijão- which seems to be the typical sidekick to deep fried main courses. Don't forget to order a side of "Esparregado", puréed spinach, which was not on the menu. P.S. I only noticed, after ordering, that the Portuguese menu included seasonal specials.

Yelp
you know it's good when it's filled with the neighborhood locals within 15 mins of its lunch opening. Friendly staff and low key-perfect place to get your hands dirty while you down a juicy meaty roast chicken , a side of hot sauce and a glass of cold green wine

Marilyn T.

Yelp
There are a lot of places for seafood and steak in Lisbon, but I was hoping for some chicken, and I had read about A Valenciana. Apparently, they've been around since 1914. They're open until 11pm, which is nice (though some places are open until 3am for steak!). Next door is a takeaway counter. In the main dining room, everything is served on metal plates/dishes. The famous chicken is the Piri Piri (chili sauce) chicken. Food: - Frango asado c/btas fritas e arroz: a half or whole roasted chicken, served with rice and fries. The chili oil added some spiciness, but the chicken had great flavor on its own and a nice crisped skin - Arroz de peixe c/ gambas: fish rice with shrimp - good seafood flavor - Vegetables to Brás: a vegetable version of a traditional bacalao dish from Lisbon - spinach and mushrooms sautéed with shoestring potatoes and egg - Almond quindim: a traditional Brazilian egg custard - not too sweet - like a lighter flan with an almond crust I would definitely come and order a whole chicken. Wines are very reasonable (half bottles available); sangria is also cheap (get it by the liter!) Google said cash only, but they take cards. Reservations accepted.

RM J.

Yelp
This place is overrated. Would certainly avoid. Chicken is fine certainly not great Everything else is way substandard

Kristy N.

Yelp
A Valenciana is a pretty famous restaurant in Lisboa, Portugal. The one item that they are famous for is the chicken! Although I thought the food was mediocre, the staff of this restaurant are amazingly nice and polite to their customers, offering seconds for our tables if there are extra. They are also excellent with conversing with people of a different language, of course I believe in universal sign language! Sitting down, there are options of bottled water, red wine or white wine for the meal. Also, there is an orange bottle of sauce - be careful cause that sauce is SPICEY! Sitting down, bread was already prepared for us - the bread was a little hard - so I wont' recommend to eat it unless you're super hungry. Starting off with the soup - you know, you really can't go wrong with soup - it tasted pretty good haha, not burnt, enough flavouring, not overly salty! Next up is the main course - the chicken and fries. I really appreciated the chicken here - I thought it was roasted quite nicely, leaving the white meat still tender and cooked to a decent temperature. The dessert served was just a simple ice cream you could purchase from the store - which was a little disappointing for me - but I went with a tour - so they probably made their own arrangements in regards to what type of dessert we would be eating.

Earl T.

Yelp
Very simple, basic fare. They do have a menu in English, but most of the waiters don't speak much English, but they are very friendly and helpful at pointing and pantomiming. The waiter asked us if we wanted the chicken. Clearly that is what most tourists order and that is what they are best known for. It comes on a platter cut it into pieces. It is simply flavored, cooked over a fire so it tastes very fresh. Fries were excellent. Rice was fairly bland. Time for dessert. The menu for dessert is in Portuguese. Waiters couldn't translate to English. So they took me back to the kitchen to look at the desserts that were there so I could choose. Chose a flan for my wife and an almond mandalin (kind of like a pecan pie but not as sweet) for myself. The flan was the Best! Even with a half bottle of wine and two desserts, the meal was only 35 Euro. We are glad we went and only a short walk from the Dom Pedro hotel.

Steve Y.

Yelp
Great little local find. The pictures you see are of the front. The back is an open seating area in a park like setting complete with a live green garden wall. The staff was helpful and the chicken was amazing. Don't miss this one.

Emma Q.

Yelp
Located at neighborhood, not that easy to find, but once i sat down and tried the food, I really satisfied. All the dishes are very big and the food is very delicious. I highly recommend the lamb chops.

H S.

Yelp
Went there for lunch craving the Portuguese roast chicken, called the piri piri chicken. They did not disappoint. The chicken was moist and crispy With an amazing accompaniment of fries and salad. Very delicious. I ordered the lamb chops too, which were average. The service was incredible as was the norm in Portugal!

Ryan W.

Yelp
Great piri piri grilled bbq chicken. Wine prices reasonable.

Matt V.

Yelp
Such delicious chicken! I found this place based on a recommendation from a local. It's simple, quick, straight forward and very fair pricing.

Anne P.

Yelp
Stayed in an apt across the street and stumbled on this restaurant. Delicious Portuguese food, great selection of fish and meats, very attentive staff and good wine/beer selection. Reasonably priced and enough to share. Definitely will go back

Filipa L.

Yelp
Very well know bbq restaurant in lisbon! You can smell the delicious bbq chicken from the street! The cream or the roasted codfish are good options as well. The service is fast as this house is always full. Good for big groups (make a reservation first!) or families. You can count on good sangria and typical portuguese wine! Good offer for desserts too. Not shure if the list is in english though, so carry a eng-por book when making your request!
