Where to Eat and Drink in Rockridge | Eater SF

"Rockridge has never lacked for Italian restaurants, so when A16 — with its original outpost in the Marina — announced plans to open here in 2013, many wondered if the neighborhood really needed another. But it’s been a welcome addition to College Avenue, with its rustic-yet-industrial environment, complete with brick walls, a crisp-white marble bar, and wood-fired oven open to the dining room, churning out pizza after pizza. Named after the highway that runs through the Campania region of Italy, which also inspires the cuisine, A16 is known for its fresh pasta, house-cured meats, and those Neapolitan pizzas — served with scissors for you to slice — as well as their extensive wine list." - Clara Hogan

Fried olives were so good I almost choked to death, pizzas are good, just go ahead and order everything. Salmon was my fave! Finished with strong coffee and tiramisu. Drinks are all tasty as well. Staffs all super cool and the art they have up is dope!

Went for a lovely Valentine's date and realized this should be our go-to special date spot! Every time we go, it's magical, and the pizza is TO DIE FOR.

We reserved the private room in the back for a celebration for my mom's 90th birthday. Our 21 guests ranged in age from 11 to 90. I can't say enough about how wonderful the evening was! The room was beautiful! Our family appreciates good food and we were all impressed by the quality and taste of all of the food. All of our guests also raved about it. The service was also great with a special shout out to our main server, Carlo. The two wines that that A16 suggested were very good and not very expensive. We also appreciate that we were told not to park very close to the restaurant but rather in the nearby residential area due to car break ins.

Mushroom pizza was eh. I don't like mushrooms. I had other things happening that made my experience a bit worse. The ambiance was good though. The water tasted great 👍

Google
Well, I must say that I thought that water was free in restaurants after spending $45.00 on 3 tiny pizzas, and an additional charge to add 3 tiny pieces of garlic, we were then told that we would be charged for any additional water cups beyond 1. So three people order three pizzas and only get on water cup, absolutely absurd. The 4th person in our party chose a different airport restaurant and walked over there and they gave us the water cups we asked for at A16 pizzeria. Needless to say that when we travel through Oakland as we do frequently we will never patronize this place again. As we were eating I saw a couple order a 16 inch pizza and asked for two plastic knives to cut the slices, and two forks. They were told that they could have one knife and one fork and would have to be charged for for a second set of plastic utensils. Horrible customer service. This picture is of one of the water cups we received from the second restaurant.

Had a recent lunch. Most food items were good. This included panzanella, fried olives, meatballs and a couple other things. Very tasty. We ordered 2 pizzas however that we were unable to finish because they were poorly made and had very off flavors. The pizzas were barely warm, soggy (almost wet), and tasted of heavy/dirty smoke. This was a weekend lunch where I’d guess the oven fire was just starting. They cooked/warmed the pizzas before the oven was at temp. The wood fire also may have been smoldering, which creates “dirty” smoke and off-flavors. This may have been an aberration, but if the restaurant is going to serve pizza, the oven needs to be ready to go. A16 is well known for pizza and customers expect more. These pizzas should not have made it out of the kitchen.

Was excited for a first date night out in a while and not cooking as it was a long weekend; we were looking to enjoy a nice meal out together. Was slow and we were seated quickly. Shared some apps and each had an entree. Based on the experience didn’t consider desert. Not only was the food inconsistent; the service was sparse and feedback not meaningfully addressed. Shared a seasonal salad that was OK. Maybe 70 cents of ingredients for $17. I get it; and it felt quite uninspired. Also shared Arancini. Don’t order this often but was feeling indulgent. It had a very dry texture, was warm, but not hot, and was notably under-seasoned. The mayo plus spicy pepper was really basic. Pork chop looked nice but was over cooked by any modern standard. By a lot. Likely 165f plus for the core temp. Tough to cut and chew. Managed to eat less than half. The carrots were a bit over charred but probably the best food of the $150 night out. Pasta was undercooked and was more than al dente. Served up on a chipped plate. We sorta trudged through it all. Service was scant and dismissive. The first check in was very late in the meal after we stopped eating and with all of the feedback, there was just a shameful ‘sorry’ and a quick drop off of the check. A neighbor table had a complaint on the halibut being dry and the waiter tried to say it can be like that because it’s not a fatty fish. Then came back and said ‘chef said it was overcooked.” No one ever came back to follow up with us about the feedback mentioned above. I wondered if there was a chef in the kitchen… One meal is not a complete view of a restaurant; we’ve enjoyed several meals here before and hope to again at some point. Maybe not on a Sunday. Several things off in one night is a lot especially at high prices.

Google
Tasty food and drink. The pinzimonio was a fun way to start the meal; assorted veggies with two different types of pesto and ricotta. The pizzas were great too. The Vesuvio was nice and spicy, and the Bianca was refreshing. Both were incredibly flavorful. The rosemary Palermo was delicious and refreshing, and the Italian has that quintessential smokiness that comes with mezcal.

Yelp
Walked in for dinner and sat at the bar. The restaurant is beautiful with great ambience and service was lovely. Food is a little bit on the more expensive side, but not out of the ordinary for the area with good portion size. We really loved the Pomodoro pizza with the addition of arugula on top, and it came with chili oil, which was excellent. The crust was fussy and delicious. The gnocchi was also really interesting and unique, but not as tasty as the pizza. The pasta itself was huge and fluffy, but I feel like the dish needed a little something else.

Yelp
A bit pricy, but sadly my pork chop was sub par. It wasn't trimmed well (lots of fat), it was tough, and the steak knife was not sharp at all. It was cooked ok, but just not enjoyable to me. I was also a bit disappointed that they didn't have any gluten free pizza or pasta options. That didn't factor into my score, but I wanted readers to know.

Yelp
8 adults for dinner cost $498. Restaurant added a 20% gratuity $99.60 then added tax on both dinner cost and gratuity. In my experience most restaurants will impose an 18% gratuity. I called and spoke with the manager who claimed that the gratuity is a service charge and not a tip and should be taxed. I have NEVER seen a restaurant tax the tip. Do you think the restaurant will report and pay the tax to Alameda County? I doubt it. The gratuity is income to the server. RIP OFF.

Yelp
The inside is pretty, open and big. They have some outdoor seating as well. We came with no reservation on a Saturday evening and seated right away. We had pasta with beef short ribs, pasta with pancetta and salad. Salad tasted fine. The beef short ribs were good but unfortunately the pasta seemed liquidy and the pancetta was undercooked. It seemed more like German stroganoff vs and Italian pasta. It was not what we expected. They didn't charge us for the pasta with pancetta because my husband didn't eat it. Maybe we'll come back for the pizza. Service was friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Very creative menu and delicious pizza. The deep fried olives are good, the asparagus appetizer very good and the Nduja pizza was excellent. I'm not sure about the drinks, the Old Fashioned I ordered was nothing special.
google avatar

JK T.

Yelp
Been here twice. First time got the meatballs they are excellent the only standout. They undercooked the spring trout for me. Everything else wasn't terribly special. Funny enough it wasn't on the menu this time I went! The service wasn't great second time around she may have checked in on us 3-4 times over two hours. We had to keep asking for water. It really is just overpriced pizza at this place. Just go to Zachary's for pizza or Townhouse in emeryville for the same Italian ish type food that's 10x better. Ambiance is awful too, cramped as all heck and if you sit near the front door you will hear the door slam all night.

Yelp
In my opinion, there's no better casual yet elevated/slightly upscale dining option in Rockridge than A16. Whenever I find myself wanting a nice meal out with good cocktails and a nice ambiance, A16 is the first place I think of. I've been here at least a dozen times and quite honestly, the first time I went I thought it was a bit overpriced, but now that I've been a few times I realize it's worth it. Pizzas are all $20 and up and each appetizer is $15 and up, so you can easily spend $150 for 2 people with drinks and apps, but you can also just order pizzas and keep it around $50 if you want. Here's what makes A16 so great and worth the price (and honestly so popular with all the Rockridge residents - it's packed every night of the week). First, the menu is highly seasonal and always changing. I've had an amazing lasagna here, pasta amatriciana - you may not see those things when you go but it's okay, whatever you order is going to be delicious. Since it's fall now, they have a delicata squash pizza variety and a delicata squash appetizer, for example. There's always something different on the menu which makes it so good. There are some staples on the menu as well, like the margherita pizza, which is my favorite of the pizzas. I'd recommend trying their pasta though - I had the amatriciana last night which is a tomato pasta with thick pieces of guanciale and it was SO divine. Another thing that makes it so great is the cocktails. Every cocktail I've had here is delicious. They have a great wine selection too. Last thing that makes A16 so great is their outdoor seating. It's so nice that people are even sitting outside in November. It has lots of heaters and feels super cozy. The ambiance inside is super nice too, super stylish decor and lighting, which makes it the perfect place for a celebratory meal. Final tip - they add 20% gratuity automatically to every party, just so you know!

Yelp
I've been to A16 on several occasions and have always enjoyed it. The food is always tasty, the atmosphere is always mellow and kinda sexy and the people that work here are kind and welcoming. This review is going to be centered on the dessert. Most restaurants of this caliber have great food and mediocre dessert. Well, I'm here to tell you that the dessert matches food and the atmosphere. Beautiful, tasty and down right sexy. We ordered the tiramisu and it was easily the best one I've ever had. Soft but not wet. Sweet but not too sweet. Thick and velvety and perfect in every way. We also ordered another dessert, which I am sad to say, I do not remember the name of but it sounded so interesting I had to try it. It was chocolate and hazelnut and pear and merengue... it was very pretty and tasted even better. Soft and creamy with a little crispy bottom. Pure deliciousness. Long story short, eat the meal but save room for the dessert.

Yelp
A16 is definitely our favorite Italian food in the East Bay. We've been a handful of times over the last few months and appreciate their wonderful service and excellent menu which changes often but some favorite staples remain! We dined outside for the first time and loved their parklet. We were treated so well by our server Beatriz. The drinks and food were all paced well as we shared some starters and entrees. Our 9 month old son dined with us and charmed servers, other guests. Thank you to all the staff for being so welcoming and family friendly. A16 does everything really well from their fresh salads to authentic thin crust food fire oven pizzas to the plate lick worthy tiramisu. We can't wait to return to A16 again and again!

Yelp
Margarita pizza with an egg is my gold standard item to order. It was more like pizza soup. Way too wet and kinda stingy on the basil and cheese, and they have the real deal wood oven? UGG!

Friendly, familiar place; great Neapolitan pizza pies; tasty, well stocked cocktails too!

Yelp
It took me a while to write this because I didn't want to write it upset. The service here was absolutely awful. And I say that having been someone who worked in the industry and is used to being more on the patient end--out of empathy. But when I tell you the waitress was ducking and dodging our table, avoiding us like we were friends she was embarrassed to be seen with or something, it was ridiculous. Her other tables were so close to us and she would walk toward us and immediately switch directions to make small talk and ask about the other tables. Then my friend's lamb shank came out cold, mine being only slightly warm (but I had pasta so I didn't mind as much), and she didn't come to ask how things were not once. Not even when my friend asked another person to have her plate reheated. They proceeded to refire it, but at that point I was done and she didn't want it anymore. They never gave us an update after taking it away to let her know it had been refired and at that point another 10 mins had gone by. When she said she didn't want it, they gave her attitude, but thankfully took it off the bill. I feel a lot of this could have been avoided if they had communicated or if our waitress had checked on us at least once. She had no problem checking on the other tables. The food was okay. Nothing spectacular or worthy of rave. Maybe it would have a different rating if it came out at the right temperature. 1 star.

Yelp
I came back for dinner again, and the pizzas were once again delicious! We had the margherita, vesuvio, and funghi, and all were amazing. The crust was soft and pillowy, which is just how I like it (if you want something drier and firmer this will not be it). We had a little gem salad, which I thought was just average. It was missing some zippiness - maybe the dressing wasn't flavorful enough. But if you stick with the pizza you will not be disappointed! I have soured on Pizzaiolo even though they have a beautiful patio - and I will be bringing my business to A16. Yay!

Yelp
Great place! It was a bit crowded, but that did not stop the great vibes and good service. Really enjoyed the food as well.

Yelp
Wood-fired pizzas, house-made pastas, good-looking salads and a very strong wine list headline A16. The bar also mixes very good drinks. Definitely a nice spot for dinner, especially with out of town guests. There's always a buzz and the presentation of their dishes is reliably a little wow without departing from casual. The tables are nice though the seats are a little high-schoolish out of hard wood. This makes sitting at the bar or the chef's counter near the pizza oven a good alternative for parties of 2. Among the pizzas, the fennel sausage is a winner, with rabe on it as well. The meatballs are a solid starter. You'll often see some seasonal elements -- like delicata squash or summertime fruits -- brought into the menu, and these are winners in my experience.

Yelp
Do not attend. Reservation at 6:45 waited for 45 minutes upon arrival to be seated at a take out station. Completely unacceptable. Thank you for ruining Christmas Eve. Will not be returning.

Mo E.

Yelp
I'd just avoid this place. Couldn't even make it to ordering because of how rude staff was, I just left from the high top outside table that they put me in when I had a *reservation*. Never looking back. I live down the street and will go out of my way to eat pizza anywhere else. I recommend Marica down the street for food or Zachary's for pizza.

Yelp
One isn't necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can't be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest. Maya Angelou The reviews are certainly inconsistent here. I cannot speak to anything else though but my experience. I came in Wednesday after work before Thanksgiving. A friend of mine has two new wines on the wine list and I wanted to try them out. I was seated promptly with a nice view of the dining room. My friend is Terah Bajjalieh if Terah Wine Company and she makes lovely natural or almost natural wines from local organic, biodynamic, sustainable vineyards. Currently on the list is a Tempranillo pet nat and a Nouveau style red made from Sangiovese. I enjoyed both wines but loved the Tempranillo the best. Such a fun, crisp versatile sparkler. My meal was two courses with pork meatballs and a side arugula salad. The pork meatballs were substantial, filling and savory. Salad was citrusy and acidic. I liked both plates and they paired nicely with both wines. Service was friendly and on point. No issues and I like the fact tip is included. Staff was decorating for holidays, it will look festive inside for December. They also still have street side seating. Parking is ample all over Rockridge except I didn't care for the prick who backed right next to the front of my car. An idiot who doesn't deserve a Subaru ;-) A16 is highly recommended.

Yelp
We really wanted to like this place but after the last two visits, we finally decided to call it. We ordered the calamari for appetizer but all we got was 3 tentacles, fried thinly sliced lemon (?) or tangerine and I think it was tiny roasted potatoes. For $18, totally not worth it since it was missing the main ingredient - calamari! The main course took almost an hour to arrive, why? It's just a margherita pizza and seafood pasta that had 2 pieces of shrimp, 2 mussels and 3 clams. Ridiculously over priced for the very little amount of food you get. Aside from the disappointing portion, the service is REALLY slow. In short, if you're fine with paying for over priced meal and have all the time in the world to waste, then ok - try this place. But, if you appreciate good food, service and time then go some where else.
google avatar

Wylie B.

Yelp
First time here so I will try again, but this visit was far from stellar. Ambiance was really cool and there was a nice buzz in the restaurant. Bartender was pleasant and helpful. Drinks were spot on. The people that ordered at the same time as me received all their food before I saw anything. Even a couple that ordered 10 minutes after me was nearly done before I began to see any food. My appetizer was accidentally sent to the wrong table after what was already a long wait. When it finally reached me it was cold . Sent it back for what I hoped was a quick warm up in the pan. Surprisingly my main dish came out before my appetizer. After waiting 30 minutes for all this to go down I threw in the towel and said there were too many mistakes for a place looking like this and charging what they do. Note: agreeing with previous comments that the calamari appetizer only had 4 small overcooked pieces with loads of cold beans. Way over priced at $20. Trout came out and while I didn't taste it it looked rather sad with out dated presentation not to mention not looking freshly cooked. I was told there was a new kitchen staff working out their issues. Get busy brigade. This experience can't happen again. Looking forward to trying again but once burnt twice shy...

Yelp
All around , just bad. Ambiance is the only plus. We ordered five dishes and every one lacked even decent taste. The pork chop was completely tasteless. Broccolino was soggy and gross. Calamari had like 3-4 calamari and some nasty potatoes. Service was also slow and unattentive. No idea how this place remains in business. I'd go to Waffle House before returning here.

Terry K.

Yelp
Poor service, terrible food and way too noisy. The trout was over cooked and dry, the green vegetable with it was stringy/chewy and swimming in oil, the sugar snap pea side dish was awash in oil, the gnocchi was gluey. The little gem lettuce was not fresh and crisp. The noise level made comversation difficult. The only good dish was the meatball starter.

Aaron J.

Yelp
I'm going to give this place 3 stars because I've been here before and it was awesome. However, I came here last Saturday for their Christmas Eve prefixe and the food was just bad. We didn't get seated until almost an hour after our reservation. No big deal. Big night, restaurant was clearly swamped and the host was extremely nice and apologetic. So we started with a drink at the bar. Drinks were great and bartender was friendly. Once we got seated our server was great but stressed, however she still did a great job. The food was just plain bad. The seafood salad was almost inedible. They also missed one of the wine pairings, appeared to have been the runner's fault not the server. Again not a big deal. After choking down all the courses, we got the check and it was $1,200 for four people. Again, it's a nice spot and I'm fine with a big check for a special meal at a special restaurant but I could barely make it through the food. Hope this was just an off night but if I have another experience like this last one, I won't go back.

Yelp
This place used to be a go-to for special occasions but no longer. We decided to celebrate New Years Eve at A16 and the dining room looked beautiful and festive. Unfortunately, the restaurant was not well staffed or prepared for the evening and our experience left little to be desired. We ordered a bottle of champagne and sat nibbling on our olives while we waited for 30 minutes for our drinks. Finally, the waitress came to tell us that the bottle we ordered was being chilled. Why offer a bottle of champagne on the menu if it is not chilled and ready to be served - on New Years Eve??? Waitress finally brought over 2 complementary glasses of bubbles and we ordered a different bottle instead of what we wanted. The salad came and was the high point of the meal. Nice portion, tasty and fresh. The pizza was lukewarm and the crab pasta with broccolini came with only a few flecks of green and way too much breadcrumbs and crab which made the dish dry and unpleasant. We ordered gelato for desert which was lovely and one espresso. They charged us for 2 coffees we never ordered and forgot to charge us for one of the dishes and brought us the wrong box of leftovers. Service was confused and food was just okay. There are so many great options for Italian dining in Oakland, choose any of those over A16

Cathy T.

Yelp
I don't like to write bad reviews but this place left a bitter taste in my mouth. We came here for a birthday celebration. I was directed to the back room when I entered the restaurant which they referred to as the 'private party room'. Having said that, the room was filled with a couple of large party tables and a few smaller tables. As the food and drinks came to every table, the noise level elevated in the room. We were all enjoying ourselves until the GM Gemma came to our table and told us we were too loud. I was shocked to hear that it was only addressed to our table as the large table next to us was just as loud if not louder. What's most upsetting is how the GM handled the situation. A good GM would assess the situation and resolve the issue instead of putting the blame on one party. Should one party in the room complained about the noise level, they should reseat them out in the main dining area. Instead, the GM sided with the 4 male that was sitting on the other side of the room and singled out our table of 7 females. Mine you that there was another table of 7 between our table and the table of 4 males. How could they be sure which table was making the most noise with over 24 guests in a small room? This definitely spoiled the birthday celebration for us. Overall, food is average(slightly salty for my taste) and portions are small for the price you pay. The only reason why I gave it a star was for the service from our awesome server Beatrice who was tentative and friendly. I feel sorry for the employees who have to work with Gemma who is unprofessional and rude. A GM is suppose to maintain order, making sure dinner service is smooth and resolve issues instead of creating them. With that being said, you will never earn my business again. I will caution my friends and family about how they treat their guests and run their business. Take your money elsewhere!

Joyce G.

Yelp
Just had a fab Aperol Sprizer made by my favorite server/bartender Carlos. Always so friendly and knows how to give great customer service. Pizza here the b st on the whole West Coast! I'm and exNew Yorker so that's a pretty high recommendation! !!

Yelp
This restaurant needs to seriously reevaluate what they're doing or shut down. Food was not prepared well and terrible service (not to our server's fault). We ordered calamari and it was literally 4 pieces, 1 inch by 0.5 inch pieces. Who tf thinks when you order calamari you get 4 pieces + 1 lb of fried beans. To add insult to injury the calamari was terribly over done. The worst calamari I've had. We asked the server to comp it and said it was not what we were expecting - if we knew we were paying for 4 pieces of calamari for 9 people for $20 we would've gotten something different. The server said management could discount it by 50% (didn't even comp it) and said that's why we suggest you order 2. ??????? 8 pieces of overcooked tire rubber for $40? I have never experienced this before. Drinks were so so, Negronis had too much campari. I ordered a second one and it took 30 min to get. The rigatonci was average but not worth getting. The egg and guanciale pizza was the best. We also got our lasagna 20 min after all food was served and we were ready to leave. Host that greeted us was rude. I've never given a review this bad for a restaurant before. They also added 20% gratuity without asking, I assume because we had a 9 group (technically 7, but two toddlers), - server didn't let us know. It's not totally the servers fault, mostly management and their chefs. Don't come here

Yelp
I'm pretty picky about Italian, this was a solid Oakland spot. Cute space, delicious short ribs, decent service, wine list could be a bit better.

Yelp
Very glad there's an outpost in Oakland. They have a couple vegetarian options. Nice wine list. Parking wasn't too bad either since it's one of the first restaurants on College. Would definitely recommend reservations on weekends. Overall would recommend.

Yelp
Automatic 20% tip on a table of 2? Very mediocre , overpriced, no good! Go to anywhere else for pizza especially.

Yelp
My cousin went to eat at A16 with his father and nephew. He doesn't have the capability of posting on Yelp so I'm doing it for him They ordered burrata, sautéed calamari as appetizers, and no bread was offered after being requested, I was told that the crackers were enough. The burrata was dry and the calamari was extremely fishy as if it was old. My father and I shared a ribeye steak, medium rare with a side of beans. The steak was good but the beans were bland. They also brought a side of potatoes which we didn't order. My nephew ordered the margarita pizza, which arrived after my father and I were finished with our entire meal. Luckily, they brought the potatoes by accident so he had something to eat. My nephew was eating his pizza while my father and I were on dessert and coffee. Not a great way to serve dinner. I informed the Asian female manager about our situation, and rather than attempting to make it better. She simply said I'm sorry and walked away. The waiter also apologized, but rather than offering something on the house like a dessert or coffee they did nothing. We typically tip 20% but since the service was also not great, we tipped 15%. If this restaurant is too busy, I would recommend you stay away because it's obvious that they cannot handle a large amount of customers. I frequent A16 in San Francisco quite often and the food and service has always been excellent and I've never had this type of issue.

Yelp
Meh. We have been here years ago and left totally satisfied. Tonight, however, it was not the same experience. First off, a $35 corkage seems insane to me. The small plates we ordered were very good. Smoke burrata, fried olives, steak tartare were all verrrrry good. But then- we ordered our pastas. Boo. We ordered three of their four offerings. The ammatriciana was pretty good. Seemed like something I could make at home, but it was fine. The duck gnocchi was mixed. The gnocchi was tasty and seemed homemade. The duck was dry and not flavorful at all. Did not seem confit in any way. Then the crab orrechiate. Yikes. So dry. So flavorless. It was like a bowl of dry crab meat. Gross. We will not hurry back to pay so much for so little. Service was not amazing. They noticed we didn't eat the crab dish and took it off the bill, but ... still. Not enough.

Yelp
I would say it's okay. Best thing there is their tiramisu. Pizza is average. Ambiance is great. One thing I really don't like is all the surcharges they add to the bill. Expect to pain way more than what you actually ordered. Some places are just squeezing the COVID BS surcharges and this place definitely wins number one in doing that.

Yelp
After 25 years, I still love this place. The food is consistently stellar. The staff are supreme. After visiting Italy for a month, the cuisine at A16 is as good as any establishment in Tuscany or Florence.

Yelp
Food and service is always great. Been at least a dozen times and have never left disappointed.

Yelp
The pizza is great and so is anything on the menu. I like the front room better than the back room, or if you're flying solo or as a duo hit the bar for quick seating. Great lication amd fun atmosphere.

Yelp
I normally do not write bad reviews as you can see from my post history but the service here was subpar at best. Food was good but service was lacking. First, they talked about special pizzas on the menu and said they would check if the specials were still available. Got zero updates on that. No biggie Next, we ordered the fried olives and as the server brought them to our table, many of them dropped on the floor and table. She did apologize and said she would bring more. All good. Well, she never did bring us any and forced us to have to bring it up once our main courses arrived. Would have not expected anything if she did not offer ( I can understand round olives rolling off a plate so not a big deal), but also, you dropped half our appetizer on the floor..how could you forget? Lastly, when we finished, we asked if we could have some of the hot oil to go for our left-over pizza that we took to go (soo damn good!), she said "that's not possible" What??? When I door dashed this place EVERY pizza came with a side of the oil. I really think she was being vengeful for asking about the fried olives. Once we got the bill, we saw a 20% tip is included. Guess they have no motivation to be helpful since tip is included. Better to just get this place to go vs dine in. Would eat the food again, but not sure I would visit this establishment again.

Yelp
I love the energy of this restaurant and had planned on a birthday celebration there. I used Opentable for the first time in two years. I thought my reservation was set. We got there at the height of service and found out we were not on the list. I consulted my opentable app and my reservation was gone. But, the lovely competent and gracious hostess said they had a table outside with a heater. We took it and they made us as comfortable as possible. But, one of our dining companions was not dressed for the blustery night so we had to go. I know the food is good and the caliber of the staff really exceeded expectations. We will visit again and double check our reservations (I got home to find an early morning email asking for confirmation of the resy).

Yelp
I LOVE A16 in SF.... But it's been a minute since I've been there (thanks covid)... fortunately I got to go last night to one closer to home in Rockridge. It did not disappoint. They had MY FAVORITE seasonal ingredient on the menu, squash blossoms! Cooked the way they should be- stuffed with fresh herbed ricotta cheese and tempura fried! Perfection! I also enjoyed the rigatoncini amatriciana- light tomato sauce with pork belly. A16 is known for their oven fired pizzas. I enjoyed the fungi pizza covered in wild mushrooms. Perfectly cooked crust and the freshest ingredients. Service was attentive, and at first felt a bit rushed, but slowed down when our server realized we were there for a leisurely dinner and drinks. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Cute spot good food gotta shout out to Beatrice our server she was awesome and so attentive. Our second time here so decided to come back. My party of 7 dropped $700 buck plus gratuity to have the manager Gemma tell us we were "too loud". She said there was a complaint from another table, likely racist. We were seated next to a party of 10 and they were just as loud and even banging their table with their fist. That ruined our night and we weren't even in the mood for dessert and it was my girl's birthday! For management, next time best to seat smaller tables in a non party room.

Yelp
The food is great. Our server is doing her awesome job, 5 stars service . 0 star for the manager of the restaurant. It was 7 of us celebrating my bday having our fun time on a Saturday, and all of a sudden, the manager came over and talk to one of my friend and told us to quite down because someone in the room were complained about us being "too loud". There was another big group of parties, right next to us and 3 small tables are around the 2 big groups. So, the manager decided to just come to our table to be quiet and not go saying anything to the other big group since we are both big and "loud." You do not provide these kinds of 'racist customer service'. What a disappointed bday dinner for me.

Yelp
Fun food. Some dishes much too rich or fatty such as mushrooms pasta. Very loud. Fun place! Yum salad.

Yelp
Came here with a large group on a Tuesday night for a work dinner. Service was great, food was solid. Everyone was attentive and on top of everything. The snap peas were so delicious. The pizza dough was chewy with the right amount of char. We will be back.

Yelp
I've been to the A16 in San Francisco and was very pleased with the staff, service, food, and experience. Unfortunately the one in Oakland fell very short. Firstly, staff had no urgency so sit us and mind you were the only customers at the start of their dinner. It felt like we had to drag our feet so that we didn't have to run into the waitress sitting us down. We waited 15 minutes and had to flag someone down just to get us water and the shortly then did we get the menu. We also ordered drinks and the server was again slow as a slug to get and deliver. mind he just had a scowl look on his face again first customers of the day and that was the experience. And no there wasn't only two servers but roughly 6 to 8 conjugating in the front and chit chatting and looking outside. The food....they served the pasta from the first batch and it was heavy in salt. We had to turn it away. We were told it was the first batch and they tasted it and did find it salty. Just terrible service all around. Will not visit this location.

Yelp
After living in this area for over 25 years we finally tried this place. Absolutely a happening place. Interior is pleasant and open with high ceiling. The kitchen and pizza dough show is a plus. Food was delicious and nice wine selection. Great for large groups too.

Yelp
The food and wine menu offers a nice selection of options. Our meal selections varied and everything was delish. We didn't get dessert because we were stuffed, but there were tempting items listed. It is nice spot for families or a quiet solo meal.

Yelp
Heavily overpriced with poor execution. Burnt food. Boring menu. Average pizzas. Steak was ok, just not $40 ok. However reduced tomato sauce on it was the star. Lamb pasta tasted like dish soap. The waiter was kind enough to refund our money as we had to send that dish back. Fried olives were terrible. Wine was great. 20% gratuity was automatically added to the bill. Have no idea why this place was so busy.

Yelp
I would not recommend to dine in here service was awful, plus our took over 45 minutes to come to our table no one was checking on us or at least give us an update on our food. And when our food came out it arrived cold

Yelp
We were very disappointed with the service and food. We went on 10/22/22 at 7.30 pm. We were seated and forgotten. Finally we were able to flag a waiter and she took the orders and then disappeared. We had to get her attention again and remind her. She forgot the side order for bread--had to flag a different waiter to get bread. Finally, after waiting for another 30 minutes --- she got the Pizza the underside of which was completely burnt and the pizza was bitter in taste. The rest of the dishes were mediocre at best and we had to constantly remind her or any passing waiter to bring. Very disappointed -- will never go back again. Ravi Arora

Yelp
The pizza here is bananas. Taste like Italy. They're pricey but worth it in my opinion. Always a great time.
