"Take those three dollars you have crumpled up at the bottom of your bag, hop off the A train at Nostrand Avenue, and make a beeline for A&A Bake and Doubles. The Bed-Stuy institution cranks out fry bakes and goat roti, but we come here most for the $2.50 doubles. The fluffy bara is filled with thick, well-seasoned chana, with sides of sweet-and-sour tamarind sauce and spicy pepper sauce. One’s a snack, two are a meal, and three a guaranteed great afternoon." - Willa Moore
"The Bed-Stuy Trinidadian counter-service spot is a mainstay for locals who have frequented the establishment for its affordable eats; in particular, its doubles, the deep-fried flatbreads stuffed with curried chickpeas. A&A relocated to its current home on Fulton Street in 2018, after first opening a couple blocks away in 2002. Good to know: This may be the only roti shop with a James Beard Award: In 2019, it received the America’s Classic Award, a distinction reserved for restaurants that have been around for a decade." - Emma Orlow
"A&A does Trinidadian specialties like bakes, doubles, and aloo pie. Their doubles are especially popular, thanks to a thoroughly spiced chickpea filling, so you should get here early in case they run out. Just know that this place is tiny, old-school, and cash-only. You won’t need to bring much—you can get a full meal here for $15 or less." - will hartman, bryan kim, willa moore, neha talreja
"Having won a James Beard in 2019, A&A on Fulton is one of the most iconic Caribbean eateries in NYC. A must-visit in the heart of Bed-Stuy, this is where you pull up for popular Trini street food doubles, two barras filled with chickpeas, and sweet and spicy toppings ranging from tamarind to chutney to pepper sauce (you might be noticing a trend here. I love spicy food). With a line usually out the door, plan to give yourself at least thirty minutes, bring at least $10, and while two doubles might fill you up, I’d recommend getting some extras to surprise someone (or yourself) with later." - shelley worrell 31
"This James Beard award-winning shop specializes in Indo-Caribbean cuisine and snacks. Owners Noel and Geeta Brown serve up offerings like Trini doubles, a fried dough filled with curried chickpeas and various sauces." - Nicole K. Grimes
