The Best Kosher Restaurants In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Arguments about the best pizza in New York will never end. But for kosher pizza, Abaita is almost universally acknowledged as the crème de la crème. Start off with a margherita and then try a few of the pastas. The classic spaghetti always delivers, as does the rigatoni with tomato confit, calabrian chili, and parmesan." - anna rahmanan, will hartman

Abaita Review - Midtown East - New York - The Infatuation

"Arguments about the best pizza in New York have seemingly always existed, and conversations about the very best kosher pizza in New York are no less intense. As an almost universally acknowledged truth, Abaita has been at the top of that list since it first opened back in 2018. Co-owners and chefs David Egidio Donagrandiad and Sruli Subar clearly know what they’re doing - the latter born and raised in the North of Italy, honing his skills in Miami, Lake Como, San Francisco, and beyond. The modern and intimate design of the restaurant is a bit at odds with what a lot of strictly kosher diners are used to, which adds bonus points to the whole experience. Start off with the classic pizza margherita - probably the best thing on the menu - and then try a few of the pastas. The classic spaghetti always delivers, as does the rigatoni with tomato confit, Calabrian chili, and parmigiano." - Anna Rahmanan

Midtown’s dairy Italian standout, OK‑supervised and praised by The Infatuation for wood‑fired pies and handmade pastas. An open kitchen and warm service make it a go‑to for business lunches and date nights.

Walking into Abaita, I immediately felt a sense of warmth and authenticity. The space is inviting, with a cozy yet modern design that makes it perfect for both a casual meal and a special night out. The open kitchen adds an extra layer of charm—you can see the chefs at work, which creates a lively and engaging atmosphere. What really stood out to me was the attention to detail, not just in the decor but in the overall experience. The service was excellent—attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable without being overbearing. It’s the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy yourself, knowing you’re in good hands. The ambiance strikes a great balance between elegant and comfortable. Whether you’re coming with family, friends, or even for a quiet solo meal, it’s a space that feels welcoming to everyone. Abaita has a special energy to it, making it a spot I’d happily return to.

Google
Delicious restaurant! Has to be one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. Will have to come back to try some more dishes, it all looks delicious. Ordered a nice variety and still more ground to cover. The tuna schnitzel is to die for! Very unique combination of ingredients I would've never guessed go well together. The radicchio salad with endives and pecorino was stellar! With a light dressing and full of flavor. The sunchoke soup was out of this world, creamy, nutty and comforting, very unique as well. The blueberry tea was a very refreshing end of the meal. And the olive orange cake was so good, moist, flavorful, nutty and rich with liquor. Worth it to come to NYC just to try this restaurant! Top notch!

Google
Tried Abaita in Midtown and loved it! Super cozy spot with amazing dairy Italian food. The food was so perfect and full of flavour. Staff was really friendly too. I Would recommend reserving in advance .Would 100% go back.

Google
I am a huge fan of Abaita but I went today and there was no ac in the 90 degree weather was so hot the food could of been the best food ever and wouldn’t be enjoyable the food was delicious as usual but it’s not fair or acceptable quite frankly to not let me know when scheduling the reservation to not let me know about the no AC as I drove 90 minutes to enjoy the meal and then when I spoke to friends and family who have been and are big fans of this restaurant said it’s been going on a week plus and they showed up and left cause it was so hot I wish I would of left but at least the food was good. I guess….. Oh and don’t get the risotto was very disappointing especially as risotto is usually a favorite for me at most eateries I dine at

Google
Now this is an authentic Italian restaurant! The pasta tasted just like the one I had in Tuscany. Staff is friendly and accommodating, and the food is absolutely delicious!

Google
Hands down the best Kosher Pizza globally! There is no question about this. Beet carpaccio is incredible and raw fish is exceptional as well. Was about to forget the hand homemade pasta ai funghi ! 🤗

Google
This is a wonderful artisanal Italian restaurant in NYC near Grand Central Station. They are certified for Kosher Dairy. The prices of the menu items are definitely justified by the quality and portion size. We ordered Black Fettuccine, and a Piccante Pizza. They were both excellent, and the Burned Cheesecake was a flavorful way to finish the meal. It is rather small and I felt like I was being rushed to admit more customers, but the staff were very friendly and attentive, and the cooks were rightfully proud of their craft.

Yelp
Good but mostly forgettable meal and service in a fun, hectic, family environment. We didn't go because it's Kosher, rather for the excellent Italian menu and midtown location. We went for the crudo also... bummer they were out of both crudos even through we arrived at 6:15. Polenta was cheesy and delicious. Black fettuccini was excellent and sea bream was cooked perfectly and buttery and delicious. Lots of folks seemed to be enjoying the wood-fired pizza. One issue was we booked the "chef's counter" on Tock which we thought would be a cool experience but turned out to be just a counter seat looking at the dishwashing station with the door open... lots of silverware clanging, plate stacking and watching dishwashers eating leftovers off diner's plates. Not upscale for sure.

Yelp
More of a 4.5/5 star place! Really enjoyed this restaurant! The food was delicious! Every bite was better than the next. Highly recommend the lasagna, and pizza! Yes this place is kosher but the food is up there with some of the better Italian I've had recently. The restaurant is very small though, the tight space made it a bit uncomfortable at times and there was nowhere to wait for your table to be ready. Our only other complaint was the service was a bit weird, they kept trying to clear our plates while we still had food on them and were still working. At times it felt like they were hovering over us. A very nice touch was when one of the servers noticed I got sauce on my shirt and brought me over a shout wipe! Overall I would recommend this place!

Yelp
One of the best pizzas of my life. Eggplant was so good and crust was amazing. Beets were tasty. Bathroom was cool with a fun pattern.

Yelp
We loved this place. We sat in the outside enclosed area. We would have sat in the outside area but it was HOT, too hot to be sitting outside. We had the beet salad to start. Very tasty. We then had the arancini, which was also delicious. It is different though, there is a spice that they add that is different from usual. They inside of them arancini balls are yellow. Still very good. We had the mushroom pizza as well. Delicious. Service was excellent. Great dinner.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is kosher. I came with a work group. They offer beer and wine but not liquor for cocktails. The olive oil focaccia appetizer was delicious! All of their pastas are vegetarian. I ordered the spaghetti. It tasted good, but I would've preferred having some protein. For dessert, I had the lemon curd. The curd itself was delicious, but the brown sugar crumbles were a little tough. Overall, this is a decent place to go for Italian food, especially if you're looking for somewhere kosher.

Yelp
What an incredible meal! We we're so lucky that the weather was rainy today as we were able to snag a great table in the air conditioned "street tables" on 49th Street without a reservation. I totally suggest you make one if you want to be seated. Everything we ordered was so fresh and with quality ingredients. You can tell there has been a lot of thought and love put into this food experience and menu. The Lasagna was the highlight of our meal and will be the reason we return. It tasted like we were in Italy, right in Midtown Manhattan ! Jelena was our server and she provided excellent service along with some great suggestions. The Mushroom Pizza was also very good, and we even used it to soak up some of the extra sauce left from the lasagna--- can't waste any of that ! The cheesecake for dessert was very good, and oh so light and fluffy! We will definitely be back. YUM!!!

Yelp
This was a magical meal. The food was fresh, flavorful, and the best sort of comfort food. The soup was piping hot, the gnocchi was light as a pillow, the Moroccan pizza crust had a nice chew. We were surprised by the polenta with chanterelles (divine) and the lemon curd with brown sugar crumbles (only thing I might have done would be to make the crumble more like a crisp topping). Wine list is balanced and affordable. The overall price point made it nice and special but didn't break the bank. The atmosphere was casual and welcoming. The staff was professional, attentive, and knowledgeable. We lucked out and enjoyed talking with the chef/owner. He was personable and more importantly puts together flavors and textures that truly satisfy. Can't wait to return.

Yelp
My fiancee and I came into the city for a date day and came here for lunch. The food was super fresh and good. The lasagna is a must have and so is the mushroom pizza. The arrancini was also really good but I'm not a fan of saffron though. Our waiter was not personable whatsoever but people have off days. We got the watermelon sangria which was good but definitely very sweet. Perfect lunch spot!

Yelp
This place is a joke of a kosher restaurant no substitutions allowed . It is crazy that they don't allow to change one item on dish. Very inflexible place to eat.

Ron J.

Yelp
Everything about this place was excellent. I met a friend there without a reservation and although the place was full, we were able to get a quieter seat towards the back of the bar, thanks to the hostess. Food was top notch. Even though it was a buisness meeting, and the place packed, the hostess placed us in the best place to discuss what we had too. Over all, highly recommended.

Yelp
On a trip to NY tried Abaita. It was so good we had to come back again. It was delicious: pizza was fantastic, Tunisian olives a delight, the salmon was yummy, and the cheesecake a perfect end to a great dining experience. Sometimes I feel the need to say this is good for a kosher place. In this case this place is just good PERIOD. So for those keeping kosher, pescatarians, vegetarians, or just foodies you should try it out'

Yelp
We ordered from Abaita because we had Kosher guests. Wood fired pizzas, salad, lasagna. The pizza was a huge surprise - fabulous! Really great bubbly outer crust, thinnest possible bottom and fresh high quality sauce and cheese. I couldn't stop eating it, kept coming back for more. Salad was a bit pricy but endive, radicchio and tardivo were very fresh and the honey vinaigrette was welcome. No question I'd order that pizza as often as possible. Lasagna not what I'd expect, sort of flat, but good taste and other diners loved it and I thought the pasta tasted homemade. Service was quick, pizza was still warm. I'd love to dine in person as the photos of the restaurant look like a welcoming ambiance. Will let you know...

Yelp
A find! Make no mistake about it. Don't let the "kosher" scare you. Trust the reviews. Enjoy!
google avatar

Ronit J.

Yelp
The food have no flavor the focaccia. It's basically pita bread very only and very lack of seasoning.
google avatar

Linda W.

Yelp
I was there with family, a party of 7 people in June. Some don't speak English very well and didn't understand the menu. Our waitress Eva was amazing and soooo patient. Kosher food can often be disappointing, not at this restaurant! The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. I had the beet salad and the Salmon, Literally cleaned my plate. We all shared appetizers and their bread with labne and another spread was fantastic. Comes right out of the oven. This place is small and bustling, I highly recommend making a reservation. A fantastic restaurant in general and especially if you are kosher observant. I highly recommend.
google avatar

Nancy L.

Yelp
Casual California minimalist inspired interior, a perfect spot to grab lunch with a friend, which is what I came by for. I got the salmon, which was wonderfully tender and buttery. The menu is a bit on the pricier side.
google avatar

Yahaira V.

Yelp
Delivery took really long, the pizza was delicious however, the vodka pizza was really spicy! This is something that should be advertised instead of just "vodka pizza" as someone who does not enjoy spicy foods although the pizza itself was good it was hard to enjoy fully because of the hot spice.
google avatar

Yelp
I stumbled upon this restaurant on a recent trip to NYC. First, I was greeted warmly by the hostess. Then my server, Dalila, introduced herself and welcomed me. She is a star in my opinion! She made great recommendations and made my meal very enjoyable. I started with the beet salad, which was very creative and delicious. My son joined me and we ordered a lovely mushroom pasta and a super tasty & spicy kale, walnut pizza (sounds odd but it was so delicious!) Sorry - I didn't get a picture of them. We loved our lunch and will certainly be back.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious and the service is fantastic. They are also very accommodating. The location is convenient for mass transportation. My family and I had a wonderful experience. The ambience is elegant. The food was cooked in an authentic Italian way. What else can you ask for?

Jamie Y.

Yelp
Great kosher dairy food. The restaurant decor is sharp and is good for a wide set of occasions - work lunch, date, get together with friends. They just get a little busy sometimes but overall very good.
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! As a picky eater, you will definitely find an amazing meal here. The fish was fresh, the focaccia was hot and delicious, and the sauces were incredible. The service was nice and everybody was welcoming. My recommendation is to enjoy the focaccia starter and the Seam Bream fish.

Yelp
Abaita is the definition of excellence. Homemade, organic, exquisite flavor, and amazing presentation. Great service from the servers team, always on top of their game. Well done, Abaita!

Yelp
Review from my 8yo daughter: The food was amazing. First we had the rice balls (arancini) which were crispy and bursting w saffron flavor. Then we had the spaghetti- it was flavorful, saucy and delish. The pizzas were yummy and the baked ziti had a creamy pink sauce. For dessert we ordered the lemon curd, burnt cheesecake and the chocolate cake.
google avatar

Alicia P.

Yelp
Everything is soooo good. I crave the mixed Tunisian olives (with labaneh!) appetizer. The lasagna - made in the wood-burning oven was amazing - perfect size. The wait staff was really helpful and made great suggestions. I will definitely be back soon. I've heard they have really good soup and desserts.
google avatar

Heena D.

Yelp
Made a reservation the same day and luckily they had something available! But it does seem like reservations are booked quickly so would highly recommend getting one ahead of time. They also have a wait list if you're set on eating here but don't see anything available. We got the Margherita Pizza, the malfaldine, and the tortellini soup. The pasta was great and the soup were amazing! Best dish of the night was surprisingly the tortellini (in the appetizer section) The pizza had potential but the middle was already soggy when it got to us I wanted to try the lasagna but they ran out! Will have to come back for that :)
google avatar

Yaira K.

Yelp
Wow! Absolutely five stars! The service here is the best I've ever experienced. The waitstaff were extremely patient and attentive. I didn't feel pressured or rushed. Then there is the ambiance. Very clean and orderly but somehow warm and inviting all at the same time! Finally, the food. Great food. What else is there to say? Fresh, minimal wait time, delicious, and high quality. What else can a girl ask for? Will absolutely be coming back.
google avatar

Anita K.

Yelp
Amazing!!!! This is such a cute kosher spot with incredible food! Seriously the pizza was insanely good especially the crust/dough. They serve their pizzas with spicy oil which was a game changer. I also had the cacio e Pepe rigatoni and lasagna which were cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend this place!
google avatar

J R.

Yelp
Amazing pasta! I had the black linguine -- not squid ink as you might expect, but garlic! My wife and daughter split the the spaghetti and a margherita pizza. Both were very good. It is a very small restaurant so I recommend reservations.
google avatar

Carlos T.

Yelp
The restaurant is very charming and cosy. Service is really good. About the food, I was expecting a richer taste. The food is good but no wow!
google avatar

Raquel A.

Yelp
The dishes here are original and delicious. Fried olives are a must try! Salads are also very good especially the beet salad.
google avatar

Paige S.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, and ambiance. Excellent price point and tasty options. Went for a small birthday dinner and was not disappointed. Our server was very nice and provided excellent recommendations when asked! They even have mocktails
google avatar

Beeta B.

Yelp
This restaurant was easily one of the most outstanding culinary experiences I've had in New York City. The restaurant is small and quaint with a perfectly designed menu. We tried everything from the appetizers to the pizzas to the pasta to the fresh baked bread. Not only did none of them disappoint but each dish surpassed all expectations. Our server was a young one who was knowledgeable, fast And took care of business absolutely perfectly. We also had the pleasure of meeting the chef and his wife both of whom were absolutely charming. We are going back again tonight and cannot wait for another wild ride a delicious food and lovely ambience. This place really got it right through and through. Very very well done!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
We sat in their heated outside area near a window. Great spot. A family with lots of children were beside us and it didn't bother us. I enjoyed the most delicious tortellini. I think it was a special. My sisters had delicious pizzas. Our server was SO nice, friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Esme J.

Yelp
The orthodox cousin was in town.. I gave him a couple of restaurants that were close to Grand Central so his non orthodox brother and my non orthodox sister has an easy trip.. so orthodox grandchildren and father came as well.. Did not disappoint.sunchoke soup and pizza all the way around.. Pizza was fresh and delish (I am not a pizza fan, so if I say it was good.. it was good!!!!!!)

Renee S.

Yelp
The noisiest restaurant ever; tables are about 4" apart; woman who showed us to the table was rude; my entree was like expensive spaghetti with no flavor (black fettucine); never going back--we were yelling over the table to hear each other.
google avatar

Shani O.

Yelp
Whether you are kosher or not, this was one of the yummiest dairy restaurants I have been to in all of New York! If your looking for a great atmosphere and high quality food abaita is the place to eat at! High key recommend the mixed Tunisian olives the olive oil focaccia was so special! margarita pizza and the mafaldine pasta was yo die for! The owner/chef (David) clearly cares and puts thought into the dishes, customers and staff. If there were more stars on Yelp I would totally give it!

Nile L.

Yelp
I am not saying if you are celiac you can eat the pizza here BUT if you are like me and gluten sensitive, you may, like me, have found the answer to mediocre gluten free pizza....When I asked the chef why it was easy FOR ME to digest he explained that most pizza dough is rushed. Abaita is given care and time to calm down....WOW!!! It isnt gluten that is an issue, it is mistreated food that bothers me. Now, lets talk about my fav dish...The salmon....Absolutely divine. My friend loves the olives so much he wouldn't share them. Again I am not saying you can eat pizza here if you are celiac AND I still cant eat pasta that isnt gluten free but there is also MUCH to be had here that does not contain gluten at all. AND you can taste the love and care.....Calm food...LOVE IT!!!
google avatar

Devorah Leah J.

Yelp
Due to COVID-19; only those vaccinated are allowed to sit inside. Abaita offers an option to sit outside for those unable to show proof of vaccination which was set up really nice. They were very accommodating with allowing patrons to go inside to use the bathroom and wash for bread even without a mask. The food was outstanding! We personally went for a late lunch and got the heirloom tomato salad to start which was super refreshing. Then for mains we got two pastas; the mafaldine and home-made gnocchi which were both delicious and so fresh it tasted like the pasta was made that day! I highly recommend the mafaldine; the type of pasta made the whole dish for me. For dessert we tried both the lemon curd and chocolate budino; the lemon curd was more light and refreshing. The chocolate budino was good, but nothing special. I highly recommend the lemon curd; the crumple on top makes you want to go back for seconds! We were finished eating around 4:30PM and I was full until around 11PM! I also ordered a "watermelon" sangria, but it just was a regular red sangria which was also nothing special for $18. The service was amazing as well; the food came quick and the waiters were very attentive. What more can you ask for?
google avatar

CA-Tour T.

Yelp
The food is delicious. I ate appetizers flat bread with dip and olives dish. Highly recommend. I ate also the picante pizza. It is not hot but tasty. The gnocchi paste was ok. The space is beautiful but sitting area is tight. Great location! Great service. High recommend!

Yelp
ABAITA SUBJECTS NEIGHBORS TO SONIC ABUSE. We live in the apartment building next to Abaita. There is an exhaust fan on the exterior of the building facing ours which makes a high pitched screeching sound that is loud as hell. We, along with many others on our side of the building, have heard this horrid noise as late as 2 AM, interrupting our sleep, and then again in the morning. This problem has persisted intermittently throughout the last year. The owner is well aware of the problem, and has repeatedly said he will do something about it to remedy it permanently, but has only ever patched up the problem, so it persists. It seriously affects our quality of life as the noise is so loud it's audible in winter with all the windows closed. I work at home and the noise makes it impossible to concentrate. I would not normally resort to a Yelp post to air such a grievance but we in the building have tried all other avenues over the past year - months and months of being patient as we were promised a solution. Yet here we are. I can not comment on the food because I refuse to eat at a place where the owners have so little respect and empathy for other human beings.
google avatar

Ani P.

Yelp
This was an interesting concept in a restaurant. We tried it out since the reviews were so great! However, the food was pretty bland and overpriced for what we got. The waiter described the mafaldine to have a spicy red sauce, was not very flavorful at all. The lasagna was decent. One of the pizzas that my cousin ordered just seemed like they tossed a kale salad on top of a white pizza, it was also average at best.

Jim B.

Yelp
Abaita is a modern space; open kitchen on the right as you enter. A short bar seating area faces the kitchen. Table seating on the left. Service staff are efficient and personable. Menu is Italian - mostly pizzas and pastas. Pizzas come out quickly - bar pie size - thin crust but not as crispy as I prefer. Desserts are excellent - the cheesecake was a highlight. I will go back.
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
Amazing place. Had an hour for lunch break and I mentioned that to the server and everything came out in minutes! On top of that the food and drinks were so delicious. The outside seatings are nice too. I highly recommend 10/10
google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of my entree before I dove in, but it was wonderfully prepared (perfectly) and thoroughly enjoyable. My girlfriends and I stopped in after we were turned away from another restaurant for lack of reservations. I ordered a "real" dinner, while my girlfriends ordered pizza and hor d'oeuvres. I had a 7 oz. Wild halibut filet, served on top of eggplant scapece and accompanied by broccolini. We all enjoyed our orders thoroughly, but I felt like I won the competition for eating perfectly prepared, tasty AND healthful food!! I would definitely come back and order the same entree again, without hesitation, unless I really wanted to try something else. The service and the food were both great, but the ambiance was just so-so. It all depends what you're looking for!
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
Last night was a special evening & dinner at Abaita. Thank you to all the talented and dedicated Abaita family. You truly made us all feel at home and the cuisine was exceptionally delicious! Cheers to you!
google avatar

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Want a-bait-a my pizza? Seriously, the mushroom pizza at Abaita exceeded expectations. The Neapolitan wood-fire crust was thin and firm yet fluffy, and able to hold its toppings well. The tomato, mushroom and mozzarella cheese topping was delicious. The heirloom tomato salad with cucumbers and creamy bethel yogurt was super tasty and fresh. I highly recommend this indoor/outdoor East Midtown Kosher gem! The quality of food was terrific and fresh, staff was attentive, and the outdoor ambience was a rustic yet modern oasis with an almost beachy feel in a concrete jungle (inside was modern Mediterranean). Loved everything about it!
google avatar

Yelp
This is by far the best kosher restaurant I have ever eaten at. The food from start to finish was delicious, memorable, innovative and a burst of flavors and textures. The olive appetizer with labneh was so inventive and delicious that even as a non-olive eater I found a way to enjoy it. The salmon entree had a delicious celery root sauce and a healthy bok choy on the side. I think the A in Abaita stands for A PLUS!

Golden R.

Yelp
The food is absolutely delicious and they have the best customer service it is a real pleasure to order from this company they pizzas and the milchig dishes are delicious is a great restaurante and love it, Thanks! Miriam

Yelp
We had a beautiful Sunday evening dinner here. Everything was delicious, the service was flawless, and the ambience is perfect. If I lived here it would be in my regular rotation of date night restaurants. We ordered Cabernet from Israel, roasted beets, Halibut, and the Abiata Pizza. Dessert was chocolate budino. All amazing. My compliments to the designer who chose the beautiful tile and wallpaper in the restroom.
