The Best Restaurants in Kensington

"Abdullah is a longtime neighborhood fixture that serves an all-day savory menu of curries, rice dishes, and flatbreads. But the main attraction here are the Bangladeshi sweets. Most people grab a box to go, but there are two or three tables across from the pastry case where you can sit and enjoy sweet rasgullas or bright, fudgy laddus. A box of mixed cham cham is another great option if you want to try a few different kinds of sweets." - carina finn koeppicus

Abdullah - Review - Kensington - New York - The Infatuation

"Abdullah serves an all-day savory menu of curries, rice dishes, and flatbreads, but sweets are the main attraction here. They’re best known for Rasgulla—sweet dumplings made from fresh cheese curds called chhena and semolina that are cooked in sugar syrup. The box of mixed cham cham is another great option if you want to try a few different kinds of sweets, and their brightly-colored laddu are fudgy and sweet. A longtime neighborhood fixture, this is where my mom would order Rasgulla for special occasions. 6/21/24 We stopped in here to look at the sweets. The female owner and her husband were so friendly. They explained all the sweets in the case to us. They were very welcoming into their restaurant.

Google
The cook was really nice, told us what everything was and gave us huge portions. Delicious, delicious lamb biryani, and the other stuff I tried was good as well. The cha (Indian style tea) was also really good. 25 bucks for three big meals and three drinks, a great bargain.

We friends had a little party of 10 people at Abdullah Chinese. We will say food here is excellent! Freshly cooked and tasty! I will recommend my friends to go there without second thought.

I ordered beef kacchi Bryani from Abdullah store. They charged $18 for it and it was one of the worst I have ever had. High Price doesn’t justify the flavor, taste or quality of the food at all. I had many kacchi byrani from many stores and around the world, this is one of the worst I ever had. improper salt and seasoning, no ghee but over usage of only oil, no aroma, , no smoky flavor that is typical of kacchi Bryani cooked using wood or charcoal, the authentic way. They are ripping off people in the name of “kacchi Bryani “ serving such low quality food is very disappointing. Absolutely NO to beef kacchi byrani !!! , I ordered chicken Byrani as well and it was $8 and it was spoiled and fermented. I ordered the same item a week before and flavor and taste was great and thought to return to purchase again with other items, only to be disappointed. They do not maintain food temperature properly caused spoilage is very dangerous for public health, so keep that in mind. Smell before buying,

Google
Not worth the money. They tried to copy Sagar Chinese (Jamaica NY), however the food doesn’t taste like that restaurant. In fact, it’s more expensive than Sagar Chinese. The lollipop chicken looks like local Chinese restaurant fried chicken—only smaller.

Google
Not sure about anything in this place but their Roshgullah are sooooo good and fresh! I enjoyed it so much and I always look for this texture and taste with Roshgullah but I can never find it but this one hits the spot!

Yelp
The food is really good. I've been here 3x and it was delicious every time. It's one of those no frills places where the main attraction is the food and the extremely nice staff. The guy who works here is very friendly and will be happy to tell you what's good to order that day. So far, I've had tandoori chicken, shish kebab, channa masala, veg fried rice, veg curry, and chicken samosas. All well spiced and flavorful. It's also pretty cheap-- $10 gets you a lunchbox bursting with food.

Yelp
By far the best quality of sweet selection in this area which I call, "Little Bangladesh" with plenty of options to choose from don't get it twisted nobody got better sweets & fried snacks, than Abdullah Sweets. The RoshGulla, (Sweet Cheese Balls in syrup) , is my absolute favorite especially when it comes out fresh & hot out the press!! Their service is just a cherry on the top, just some wholesome and friendly people. Definitely would recommend this spot for your to go spot before heading to your Shoshur bari (In-laws house) lol Peace NYC!

Yelp
WORST food. They sale disinterested old sweet and claim new. Worst quality food. All employees are dishonest.

Yelp
Went there for the sweets and was not disappointed. Many cheese based desserts (think cheesecake filling with a twist) and others that I hadn't tried previously. The older gentleman was very warm and welcoming and helped us select a range of sweets to try. And the prices were great also.

Yelp
Shut down by health department TWICE that I know of; once just a few weeks ago. I used to eat there, but I could see the place was filthy. I just don't trust it anymore. Poor representation of Bangladesh ! They just don't get it !

Yelp
Where have this restaurant been all my life. Well pretty much under my nose because I've been living in this neighborhood for about 15 years and I didn't discover them until recently. Was starving late one night when I was coming home from work and decided to give them a try and my gosh, is this place GOOD! Came in for their chicken samosa ($1) and not only did it hit the spot but it also was very satisfying. The flavor was just right and it seems like they made everything from scratch including fresh herbs to bring out the right taste. I came back the next day for a proper meal and brought two more chicken samosa, pakora (2 for $1) and their chicken ross (I think that's how you spell it for $3 including an egg) and it was delicious. As for dining in, they only have two tables and eight seats total and they opened early (6am) and close late (11pm). I'm so glad I walked in and my only regret is wishing I would have step food in 15 years ago.

Yelp
I needed some treats for an event where the audience members were going to be mainly of Bangladeshi and Indian backgrounds. Prince helped me make some selections. At the event, the fried lentil treats were the most popular. I was introduced to them and some sweets, which are very sweet. I'll return.

Yelp
Great food and the owners are so nice. I've had their sweets and they have such a nice assortment and everything is handmade.

Yelp
Really awesome food. We catered for my nephews wedding. One of the best Kacchi Biriyani we have had in a long time. The food reminded us pure Bangladeshi wedding food. Morning breakfast of parata, vaji and sujir halwa was mouth watering.

Yelp
I went here with my two 9 year old sons and the said "this is like we are in restaurant heaven!" They loved the food. It's slightly spicy for them but they totally handled it well. The people here are very kind and welcoming. My husband and I also loved the food!

Yelp
5 stars for the samosas! I've tried everywhere in the neighborhood (and elsewhere) and I think these are the best. I've enjoyed lots of other food here too, though the selection changes so you don't always know what will be available and good. Some of the dishes are just ok so you can just ask what is good for the day. It's great for vegetarians too. We had them cater a party for us and everyone loved the food. They helped us select a menu and the price was good and food delicious and plentiful.

Yelp
Always great food and service! Been there many times and always had a great experience. The owner is extremely nice, helpful and gives amazing suggestions. Just a really great wholesome family run business. One of my family's favorite restaurants for sure.

Yelp
The owner is a very nice person. He was doing very good in selling sweets where I give him 4 stars and one star less since the place is filthy. However the Chinese part is awful. He needs a professional cook and professionals to do servicing inside. I fouled hair in food. I found missing food on take out and the quantity is very poor. I went there three times to see if I was wrong in tasting food. But it's not me. Plus I saw customer bagging to hurry up since hey we're tired of waiting. I personally waited 45 minutes for my chicken lollipop and soup. Don't be disappointed, you can give it a try, things changes over-time.

Yelp
OMG, Abdullah Sweets and Restaurant was wonderful. The location is amazing too. Every single thing I've tried so far has been delicious. Terrific. Perfect service and staff. I will most definitely be returning to Abdullah Sweets and Restaurant.

Yelp
I stopped visiting Abdullah restaurant long time ago, But today I was craving for Moglai Porota and look what they gave me. I took it back and told the owner to it. And also told them to keep the money too. I was given them one chance and they fail. Never aging. If anyone ever visit Abdullah restaurant you should check the items before you leave the restaurant.

Yelp
My favorite samosas and shingaras in the neighborhood. Not too oily and seems to be made with fresh ingredients. This place is well known for their sweets. The rasgullah is my favorite; not too sweet and just the right amount of spongy-ness. It's a no-frills kind of place. You get a good amount of food for a fair price; the service is fast. Food tastes pretty good too. It's a small place with limited seating so I would suggest you order your food and take it to go unless you don't mind sitting through the hustle and bustle of customers coming in and out. For dining in, the same owner opened up a fusion chinese restaurant next door which has beautiful seating space and a larger variety of food options. I would recommend it !

I ordered lamb and basmati rice here with two naan. It was $10.00 and served enough for my husband and I. We got it to go, and I was happy they accepted card. It was delish

Yelp
I'm always excited to try a new place around the neighborhood for the chance of finding a great place to eat so close to home. Abdullahs, makes a very satisfying meal. I mean I am far from being an expert on bangladesh food but the lamb biryani was pretty good. The meat was very tender and the sauce was not spicey beyond belief. For 6 bucks, theres enough rice and meat to fill you for a meal. Although I do have a couple of qualms about the meal, one being that the rice was a little watery and two, the lamb contained annoying pieces of bone. However, I'm guessing it's common because of the way it is prepared. Another bright side about this place is the sweets, the one I was fortunate to try was what looked to be a piece of funnel cake, but instead of being sprinkled in powdered sucker, it looked more like it was dipped into honey. It provided a nice satisfying end to a satisfying meal. I will definitely try this place some more in the future.

Yelp
This place caters to a traditional Bangladeshi crowd and serves Bangladeshi cusine. Everyday day the cusine tends to be difference, thus there's variety. The food here for the most is Ok, not great nor unedible. Some dishes are oilier than others. I've been infrequently going here through out the year to support the local businesses and give them another chance. In my last visit, it was the 2nd time I was overcharged. I had to verbally review the items with the cashier and this time he was off my $10. In my previous visit when they made an error, it was $5 over charge. Being over charged 2X left me with a bad impression, even though the food was ok. Pros: Variety of Bangladeshi cuisine and sweets Reasonably price (if they bill you correctly) Cons: Overcharged 2X and not given apology Small sitting area in the front is always filled with creepy men that stare The restaurant seems to be getting dirtier and can use a good power wash cleaning. Current NYC cleanliness rating is "pending", last time it was B- rating Staff is totally incompetant and does not speak much english or broken english Credit card machine is always "broken" (Why even have it if they don't want to use it) This place has potential, only if they clean up their act and their premises. But before you go, please visit their NYC Health inspection results and decide on your own. http://www.nyc.gov/html/doh/html/rii/index.shtml

Yelp
Only got the fuschka, which was delicious. Super flavorful and spicy. The tamarind sauce is a must. The interior is no-frills but that's kinda the appeal of it. Service is a tad slow.

Yelp
This is our go-to neighborhood Bangladeshi place. Been here many times since we moved to the neighborhood around three years ago and the food is always tasty and affordable. The family that runs the place is really nice and welcoming, and often suggest dishes for us. We usually take it to go but it's also nice to dine in there. The fresh naan is delicious. We always get two meals out of one. It might not look like much on the outside (or inside) but the people and food are lovely!

Mohammed K.

Yelp
Best Bengali sweets in New York. Their service is wonderful, very friendly people in the neighbourhood. The food is also wonderful, I have tried from the three locations, two of them in Church Avenue Brooklyn and one of the location in Jackson Heights Queens.

May C.

Yelp
Kind of disappointed. Service was slow. Ordered biriyani ($8), chicken tikka masala (4 pieces for $6) and tandoori chicken ($3). Not cheap for a small establishment like that and the food was underwhelming. I was hoping that it'd have more heat. The food took a long time to heat up (even though they just stuck the Styrofoam plates into the microwave, which is probably not a good idea) and be served. The biriyani did not have the usual cardamom and spices in it and the piece of chicken in it was rather bland. Oh well.

Salim K.

Yelp
People that work there are very rude. The food is tasteless. The place is full of loud obnoxious people. Avoid at all costs.
google avatar

Zinat M.

Yelp
They serve a combination of Indian, Pakistani and Bengali fare. It's average to below average. One day the chicken curry tastes good, the next it's too salty with too many spices! The sweets on the other hand are much better, such as the yogurt, rasgullah and rasmallai.

Yelp
The food at this restaurant was so good that I almost had an out of body experience. What's more, I felt even better after the meal. That is rare for delicious food and speaks to the quality of the cooking and ingredients. The owner and staff are also very friendly in spite of their limited English. Although it's true that the restaurant is dingy and crowded, the food is better than what you'd get for three times the price at a fancier place. I must say, I pity the fool who does not eat at this restaurant.

Yelp
This is a great authentic spot for Bengali food rates amazing but the service and presentation aren't that great

Najmun N.

Yelp
Very bad place I have ever seen, when I go first time i feel like bad smell on their, and very small place

Sol W.

Yelp
I love this place. I started popping in there a while ago to pick up samosas -- which are fantastic -- on the way home, then decided to stay for a quick bite and was hooked. Ashkar and his staff are very friendly (and super-welcoming to non-Bengalis). I've gone a couple of times with my young kids, who have low spice tolerance, and Ashkar has gone out of his way to bring out mild dishes and point out which stuff is spicy. We don't order off the menu; he just brings out plate after plate of foods for us to try. The kids love the naan and the marinated eggs and the rices and a delicious mild chicken dish I don't know the name of. I've been a big fan of the vindaloos and a bunch of other stuff I've tried. Last time we went, we stuffed ourselves and went home with leftovers, and it all came out to $17. Delicious food, great service!

Atul S.

Yelp
Food is okay, so is the price. Better to ask for delivery, if pick up and there are 5-7 people inside it gets pretty cramped up.

Jinzo B.

Yelp
Came back here the other day for a filling meal. This place never fails to surprise me. I absolutely love their deserts and I always get more than enough food in one serving to fill my stomach. They have a few new dishes that I do love. The kachi biryani is super delicious and I recommend it to anyone!!! Definitely has really good quality food. Also The owner is so sweet.
