The 19 Best Restaurants in Cairo, Egypt | Eater

"Abou Tarek’s bustling downtown location is unlike any other restaurant in town, not just for the unparalleled enthusiasm of its staff, but for the fact that it dedicates five stories to a single savory dish: koshary, Egypt’s national dish (served along with drinks and desserts). Koshary is a flavor-packed mix of carbs, including rice, pasta, vermicelli, lentils, and chickpeas, topped with tomato and garlic sauces. (Unless otherwise stated, it’s also vegan.) Abou Tarek prepares every bowl fresh to order, keeping up with a constant stream of locals who stop by from noon to night. The pasta is perfectly al dente, the da’ah sauce is garlicky, and the tomato sauce is always steaming hot. If there’s one culinary experience to have in Cairo, it’s undoubtedly this one." - Laila Hassaballa

11 Must-Visit Restaurants in Cairo | Condé Nast Traveler

"While nobody would mistake Abou Tarek for a "fancy" or formal restaurant, it's an absolute must-visit for first-timers to the city, as well as a beloved purveyor of comfort food for locals. The restaurant specializes in koshari, the modern Egyptian staple that takes rice, lentils, and chickpeas, adds in macaroni and vermicelli noodles, and douses the entire combination in piquant tomato juice seasoned with lemon, vinegar, and chili. Abou Terek has been serving up the dish since 1935, growing into a bustling, multi-story establishment with an assembly line-like crew of cooks churning out loaded bowls seemingly by the thousands."

This was my first time trying koshari, and Koshari Abou Tarek did not disappoint. Despite the place being extremely busy and spread across five floors, the service was very impressive. The food was delicious, and I especially loved the lentil soup, comforting and full of flavor. A good first experience and definitely worth the visit.

No visit to Cairo is complete without a trip to this landmark place. Four floors dedicated to one dish, though they have included couple more items in the menu. One cannot miss this brightly lit place close to Tahrir Square. The place was packed and we had to wait to get a table. The fact that a lot of the clientele were locals said a lot about the quality of the food. The service was friendly. The koshary did not disappoint. The friend onions and the chili sauce added the extra zing. We also had the lentil soup, served in a hollowed out bread, which was also very tasty and filling. The portions are large and quite filling. The prices are amazing - two soups and two koshary with a drink came to £4 (British pounds).

This was a very unique Egyptian dinner. The restaurant was very busy but had 5 floors and so we got a table quickly. While it may not look the most conventionally delicious, It was phenomenally tasty and came with a whole demonstration too! We Would definitely recommend trying here. AMAZING value for money!! About 525 Egyptian pounds for 6 meals and 6 water bottles!!

Koshary is the national dish of Egypt and it is completely Vegan. This place is the most popular place in Cairo to try it. It is quite old shop. I loved this dish and had it multiple times during my Egypt trip. It’s made of chickpeas, noodles, macaroni, moong beans and then you can add tomato gravy, lime juice, fried onions & different sauces as per your customisation. The medium plate cost here 65 EGP.

The taste was delicious. We ordered the smallest size and it was more than enough for a person. You will feel satisfied and full. It comes with 1 chilly sauce, 1 duga vinegar and 1 tomato sauce. The order was for takeaway and it was fast.

Here’s a clear, well-organized version of your review: Organized Review: The food was low to medium in quality. I actually thought the restaurant was famous for offering high-quality dishes, but it turned out to be just like any other koshary place in town. In fact, there are very small restaurants that taste much better. Overall, the restaurant is overrated.

The place easily spotted as the shop is the whole corner building. Full with guest despict multistories. The staff so friendly eventhough we got communication barrier. The koshary is superb, well combination of taste.. delicious. And the lentil. Soup also must try. The staff even demonstrates live for the mixture n how to eat for us. Price also acceptable. Strongly recommend.

Good experience at Abou Tarek. They offer Koshary and Lentil soup in a bread bowl. we had both and the taste was quite good and unique. They offer salad, chips and pickel on the side. You can also add spicy sauce as per your taste. We also had rice pudding in desert and the taste was good. he space is a bit congested since it's housed in an Old building but the service is good.
