The 19 Best Restaurants in Cairo, Egypt | Eater

"Abou Tarek’s bustling downtown location is unlike any other restaurant in town, not just for the unparalleled enthusiasm of its staff, but for the fact that it dedicates five stories to a single savory dish: koshary, Egypt’s national dish (served along with drinks and desserts). Koshary is a flavor-packed mix of carbs, including rice, pasta, vermicelli, lentils, and chickpeas, topped with tomato and garlic sauces. (Unless otherwise stated, it’s also vegan.) Abou Tarek prepares every bowl fresh to order, keeping up with a constant stream of locals who stop by from noon to night. The pasta is perfectly al dente, the da’ah sauce is garlicky, and the tomato sauce is always steaming hot. If there’s one culinary experience to have in Cairo, it’s undoubtedly this one." - Laila Hassaballa

11 Must-Visit Restaurants in Cairo | Condé Nast Traveler

"While nobody would mistake Abou Tarek for a "fancy" or formal restaurant, it's an absolute must-visit for first-timers to the city, as well as a beloved purveyor of comfort food for locals. The restaurant specializes in koshari, the modern Egyptian staple that takes rice, lentils, and chickpeas, adds in macaroni and vermicelli noodles, and douses the entire combination in piquant tomato juice seasoned with lemon, vinegar, and chili. Abou Terek has been serving up the dish since 1935, growing into a bustling, multi-story establishment with an assembly line-like crew of cooks churning out loaded bowls seemingly by the thousands."

A nice experience from the restaurant itself to the excellent service and somewhat the food. Everything was great and food was good. I felt there is more pasta that lentils therefore if you like lentils dont shy off asking for more. Highly recommend local restaurant

Amazing food, and amazing service. They don't overcharge you because you are a foreigner. They only have kosheri, but this is the go-to place for it. It was crowded, we had to walk up several floors. This was the first dish we had in Egypt. We had no stomach bug after it. It tastes AMAZING.

Might be a very touristy place, but the koshary was good and the vibes are great, people were literally dancing in the streets. I got the smallest size but it was a big enough portion.

It was probably the most carb-heavy food I've ever eaten, but it tasted good. Don't forget to try the Khufun soup, the prices are very reasonable and if your table is empty, don't be surprised if other guests sit down and eat.

I've been here to try the traditional Egyptian dish "koshary." It was pretty good, and you can adjust the sauces according to your preferences . This restaurant has its own festive song that kept being played all along. We sat outside, and it was lovely seeing the people walking while enjoying the meal.

A true Egyptian food experience. Only one dish is served here and therefore the food arrives quickly. Also ask for a dessert. Good value for money

Koshary Abou Tarek is a must-visit when you’re in Cairo! The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, and the service is truly outstanding. Every single waiter was extremely friendly, helpful, and full of good energy. The staff made the experience really fun and memorable. You don’t just come here for the food – which is also great – but for the great mood and warm hospitality. Highly recommended!

One of Egypt's most frequented traditional restaurants by locals & foreigners. It has one dish only (1 soup, 1 dessert, soft drinks not considered) which koshary (mixed rice, lentil, pasta, tomato sauce, chic pea, fried onions, vinegar & hot sauce. A carbohydrates bomb that is so delicious. The spot is so busy throughout the day, but especially evenings with tourists flocking towards it to try. Koshary itself is delicious, but you can find better alternatives elsewhere. That said, a must try once when in Cairo.
