11 Essential Clarkston Restaurants to Know

"Among the go-to Clarkston Village restaurants and markets is Abyssinia Cafe & Restaurant, a charming and friendly spot serving traditional Ethiopian dishes alongside karkaday (Egyptian hibiscus tea) and superb coffee drinks and hot chocolate, too. Kick off the day with kita firfir (shredded injera braised in berbere) or breakfast ful with fava beans, served with red onions, green peppers, and scrambled eggs. Order awaze tibs (beef sauteed in onions, tomatoes, and barbere); fried tilapia dulet mixed with jalapeno, onion, and mitmita seasoning; or shiro normal, a chickpea stew simmered in berbere and Ethiopian butter." - Beth McKibben

This establishment had a traditional atmosphere. The service was great. There was a particular type of beer that I ordered. The owner advised me that they were out. Then she graciously sent her server across the street to purchase that particular item and bring it back. There was a level of hospitality that made everyone in my party feel at home. We all agreed that we would meet again there in the future. Oh, also delicious, traditional Ethiopian coffee!

Loved the experience here. The awaze tibs are amazing, and the price is great for what you get. This is a must-visit restaurant if you’re in the Clarkston area!

Do It!

Yelp
We stopped here as a big group on a Sunday evening at 7. The place is small but can seat 20-25. We were seated immediately for a group of 8. Theres a couple of big screens playing ethnic music videos and some American songs. Not Too loud. There was one server for 3 active tables but she did the best she could for keeping up with all of us. There is also a full bar with selection of domestic beers and hard liquor. The food was amazing and awaze tibs were seasoned perfectly. We also had veggie combo and all the dishes were pretty good. I would definitely try this place again.

Yelp
AMAZING FOOD. Seriously delicious. Kind staff. Willing to show you how to eat if you are unfamiliar with the culture. Really love the atmosphere.

Yelp
The food was probably a 5, but the slow service lowered the overall rating. Serve bottled water. Seems to be a place actual Ethiopians eat, so it's hopefully more authentic than others. The veggie platter had a lot of variety and they were all good. We also got the beef tips, which had a nice flavor although it was a bit spicy. They don't have lamb tibs.

Yelp
Amazing food and experience! The service took a while so don't plan for a quick meal, but so worth the wait. We had several dishes all served on a big platter with injera, and strong coffee for dessert. It was a bit smokey with incense and roasting coffee beans.

Yelp
The food was super delicious and the service was great. It was my first time trying Ethiopian food, I really enjoyed it. It was a fairly quick stop on our roadtrip and so fulfilling. The portions were very generous, we could have split a meal!

Yelp
The restaurant is under new management and it shows from the amazing food, coffee and smoothies. The mango smoothie was the the freshest tasting smoothie I have tasted in years I could literally taste the freshly squeezed mango. The food is equally amazing I highly recommend the Derek tibs or awaze tibs. Great food for amazing prices

Yelp
Great food and service by the chef/owner/waitress all rolled into one person! A no-frills place with authentic, home-style Eithiopian food. My partner and I shared the coffee and vegetarian plate which amounted to just $20 and left us both pretty full!! Later, the owner also brought us freshly roasted coffee beans to smell. Loved our experience at Abyssinia!

Yelp
American girl who grew up with the Ethiopian culture checking in. My Godmother is Ethiopian and the best cook hands down (all of her family and friends say so) So I very rarely go out for Ethiopian food since I am always dissatisfied eating out because there are so many mediocre Ethiopian restaurants here in the Atlanta, Abyssinia is not one of them. They have the most authentic Ethiopian food there is. Very flavorful and not salty like most. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Awaze tibs had the best flavor and spice level. Misor wot on the veggie platter was deeeeelicious. Shiro had a different consistency then what I'm used to but was invitingly delicious.

Yelp
They just opened recently so they seem to still be figuring stuff out, like not having many menus to give out, and not having any of the juices available that were on their menu. BUT the food was soooooooo goooooood. My friend and I ordered a vegetable platter with injera and it was all really flavorful. They said they'd have the juices available soon and I'm looking forward to returning.

Yelp
If you want to find great local Ethiopian food this is the spot! I wasn't expecting the food to be this good but it was really nice surprise. The LEGA TIBS where divine, really well seasoned which was a great accompaniment to their delicious Injera bread, my girlfriend whom is vegetarian had the BEYAYNET/VEGGIE COMBO she absolutely loved it ( and you know how hard to is to keep those Veggies happy :) We will be coming back! Thank You Abyssinia!

Yelp
This restaurant has reopened under new ownership as of September 2021. They have launched under the same name as a restaurant that existed there pre Corona, but it's a new person running the restaurant. Today, since it was the first weekend opened they had a limited menu, but I've attached the menu launching 9/25/21. Ali, was formerly a barista at Refuge Coffee, so you've got to try the coffee as well. I don't know what I had - but it was very good (the lentils with injeera.) As we know, Clarkston, has limited food options - so we are so happy that Ali has opened up this new spot. I would not come here for a super quick meal, but it's worth the wait. Also, a great place to grab a coffee and sit with a friend. This is a family friendly establishment and Ali will surely make you feel at home.

Yelp
I have eaten here three times since it's been under new ownership. The food was truly amazing. Everything was so, so, so good! I will say that the food takes a long time to come out (well, it did for us all three times), but it was definitely, definitely worth the wait! I'd recommend not going in when you've starving and be prepared for the wait. The staff was very helpful to us "white Americans" that really didn't know much about Ethiopian food. They also didn't treat us like idiots for not knowing what to get. They made helpful suggestions. The food was spicy, but not ridiculous, over-the-top spicy. It's possible they toned it down for us, which was appreciated as I am a bit of wimp with spice. Don't get me wrong - many of the items did push my limits on spiciness, but the flavors were just delicious that I powered through. The first time we went was with five adults and a few children. Every adult, except on that thought it was too spicy, loved every bite. We brought a friend another time, and that friend said they have been thinking about this food for months now and we are planning to return. Seriously, I can't say enough good about the food we had at Abyssinia!

Yelp
As avid Ethiopian food enthusiast we have tried almost every Ethiopian restaurant in the Atlanta area. From South Atlanta to Alpharetta, Chamblee-Tucker to Cheshire Bridge you name it. This place is our go to spot. It is a hidden gem in an unassuming shopping center in Clarkston. The ambience is so inviting and relaxing. Everyone who works there, and even sometimes patrons eating, will be so warm and inviting. It feels like home. It's a great place for a meeting or a small event. They offer for a variety of traditional Ethiopian fare along with a delicious vegan sampler platter; Injera is always spot on. One of the owners, Ali, is a breath of fresh air. He's absolutely wonderful - friendly, patient & attentive. He's a highly trained barista, so don't skip out on the espresso. We also love supporting a small local businesses and this one is so deserving of your hard earned money. Highly recommend

Yelp
Oh my!!! We were visiting friends in Clarkston and ran into this authentic Ethiopian restaurant. Fifi accommodated our group of 6 and walked us through their most recommended options... but honestly it's all amazing!!!! And Ali (the owner) came out and chatted with us and was very attentive. They have mild, medium and hot options. Our friends and I ate as a big family, sharing delicious food. Their bathroom was also extremely clean too. Overall, HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Made this cuban very happy :)
