The Best Coffee Shops in NYC, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"Started in the East Village since 2015, Coffee Project has grown into a destination (for coffee nerds) with locations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. The shop sells standard cafe drinks, plus seasonal pour-overs, deconstructed lattes, Nitro cold-brew flights, and other drinks. Multiple locations." - Melissa McCart

15 Great Asian-Owned Coffee And Tea Shops In NYC - New York - The Infatuation

"Between Coffee Project’s four locations (East Village, Fort Greene, Chelsea, and Long Island City), you’re never too far from one of my favorite cups of coffee in the city. Sum Ngai and Kaleena Teoh are both Malaysian and co-owners of Coffee Project NY, and they also opened a roastery and the first-ever Specialty Coffee Association Premier Training Campus to empower baristas with informational in-person and online workshops and classes. Definitely order the smooth nitro cold brew, and try the avocado tomato feta croissant sandwich if you’re hungry." - esther cho, with warm welcome, kenny yang

Everything You Need to Make Cold Brew Like the Pros | Eater

"Co-founded by Chi Sum Ngai, this New York City shop favors a concentrated, precisely textured cold brew: Ngai recommends medium-coarse grounds about the size of sea-salt flakes, a concentrated coffee-to-water ratio (around 1:5), and a 12–15 hour steep for best results. For equipment he favors the pricier Baratza Virtuoso grinder and often uses a Hario Cold Brew Coffee Bottle with a built-in polyester-resin filter for convenience." - Nina Bahadur

Google
This place blew my mind. I had the most flavorful espresso. A natural process Colombia, but tastes as if it is co-fermented with fruits. Absolutely asking place. They also teach coffee. Coffee enthusiast heaven

Google
Such a fun coffee spot! It’s a coffee school where they brew some amazing, fresh coffee. My wife got the deconstructed latte and the barista broke down how to experience it. There was a seltzer, espresso, frothed milk a cookie and the latte. It was so yummy! I had the coconut latte and it was amazing with the perfect amount of kick caffeine and coconut flavor with chunks of coconut on the bottom. Coconut is my favorite flavor in almost everything. This place is a must if your in the area.

Great coffee! Drink selection is wide and varied, even for non-coffee (more than just tea). Staff an service are impeccable, a real delight. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Google
This place serves delicious coffee and chai lattes. I've visited multiple times to try their new offerings, and each time, I've been impressed. Their baristas are knowledgeable and passionate about coffee, taking great care with each customer's order. As a result, the taste of their coffee surpasses homemade brews and the coffee from typical cafes. Additionally, they sell coffee beans, making it convenient for those who enjoy brewing coffee at home. The location is somewhat secluded from residential buildings, turning this spot into a hidden gem in the area. Moreover, they offer coffee training courses for those interested in learning more about appreciating and crafting coffee.

If you’re looking for high quality speciality third wave coffee in LIC, this is it. While you have the grungy aesthetic, pretentious staff, and decent coffee at Sweet Leaf, here you have an elegant space, professional and friendly staff, and top notch coffee. Coffee beans: 5/5 absolutely amazing, delicious beans with a diverse collection to choose from and frequent new releases. I appreciate their selection of beans with a variety of processing methods, especially many of the newer methods. Drinks: 5/5 besides the typical drinks at a coffee shop, they have some unique ones which are a delicious treat. I love that they also have a variety of pour over options here, which is great if you’re interested in buying their beans and want to try a cup before committing to a whole bag. Space: 4.5/5 very spacious with several seating options and an elegant aesthetic. My main issue with the space is lack of outlets for working from a laptop and the only tables next to an outlet are a bit small for me. Service: 5/5 all of the staff I’ve interacted with are friendly, helpful, patient (bc as someone who’s incredibly indecisive, I need that), knowledgeable, and skilled (one of their baristas, Flook, is a recent US latte art champion I believe). My only other issue is the operation hours. Wish they were open longer or else I’d visit far more often! Otherwise, it’s one of my favorite coffee shops and roasters.

The owners of Coffee Project are kind and intelligent. They know their coffee. I participated in their SCA recognized training and grew so much in my understanding of coffee. This is the place to go if you want great coffee and to know more about it.

Google
This place is a gem in LIC. With amazing people and amazing coffee tastings. Their innovative products always give me surprises. They now have many coffee shops in NYC. I would love to see their continuous growth!

Google
The closest NYC gets to the magic of Koffee Mameya in Tokyo. Several roasts to try, brewed perfectly. Absolutely worth the journey. One of the best pour overs in the city. Friendly staff happy to discuss their entire process. Cool industrial vibes.

Yelp
Two things: First, my friend signed us up for their coffee experience, and it was so enjoyable and informative. We learned about coffee beans, tasting notes, and brewing techniques - a really great deep dive that didn't feel overwhelming. Second, their coffee is seriously legit - smooth, never too milky, and really well-balanced. My absolute favorite? Their spring seasonal pandan coffee with salted coconut milk. It was SO. GOOD. I got hooked and kept coming back just for that drink. I wish it were on the permanent menu, but even without it, their coffee is strong enough to keep me coming back. It's a bit out of the way, but absolutely worth the trip!!!!!!

Yelp
I like the coffees here, although it is a little pricy. I did not like that I got charged for half and half ($1.00 extra). Other places don't charge for it. I recently got a sandwich (egg, cheese and tomato with siriracha aioli). It was lackluster and needed salt. I wouldn't order any food items.

Yelp
Amazing coffee as always and state of Art facilities to offer way more than a coffee shop. Very good services and talent team.

Yelp
Had a coffee at Academy At Coffee Project NY on Wednesday morning. Fantastic quality and a very unique setting, worth a stop if near this isolated area. Quality: One of the best Lattes I have ever had. The flavor was fantastic, finding a nice roast balance and aroma. On a first visit I was hesitant to order any beverages I had not heard of before, but would not be afraid on a future visit. Quantity: A very large glass for my drink. Value: $5.50 for a Latte. Ambiance: Academy At Coffee Project NY is both a school and a coffee bar. It inhabits a warehouse in a strange part of LIC. It functions as a place where individuals can take classes to improve coffee techniques, but I just visited to enjoy a drink. They have a casual bar area, a few couches, and some modern tables in the space. The music in the background was indie rock. Crowd: A few other folks enjoying deconstructed coffee beverages. Service: Excellent and seasoned baristas. Parking: Plenty of street parking.

Yelp
I thought it was good coffee overall but the price is definitely up there. It's a modern place & I think they roast their beans in house. Everyone's nice but I think I paid $35+ for 2 drinks & a pastry

Yelp
I'm super glad that I had the opportunity to come to this location of Coffee Project NY (as opposed to go to their more popular locations in Manhattan). This Long Island City location also houses their training center and roastery, but there is a small cafe in the middle of the warehouse if you walk far enough in. I ordered a pourover, and because I was the only customer in the restaurant, felt like I really got the best experience. They have a pourover setup that is a little bit away from their espresso machine, and they allow their customers to savor every part of the pourover process. I not only felt like I had a great conversation around the coffee itself, but felt like I was able to enjoy it in a well curated space. Because they also roast, they are constantly changing out their beans and I had the opportunity to try out different coffees while I was there. They have something for everyone, and I also love that, at the time I was there, they were highlighting Asian coffees with their coffee from Thailand. It is also super cool to know that they really care about specialty coffee education, and they have many opportunities for people to access classes and more information about specialty coffee.

Yelp
Really cute, there was tons of place to sit if it wasn't for covid. The location is very out of the way and in a industrial space but you can tell the choose it mostly to be a class teaching space not an actual shop. However you can come and grab coffee here, they even have some baked goods. Coffee was a medium roast with darker notes.

Yelp
I'm part of the Coffee Hunters meetup group. We came here on a Saturday morning. The co-founder was very informative and engaging. We learned how filtered water change the taste of coffee. We were able to sample their coffee. I learned a lot and the facility is beautiful. The location is out of the way. You have to take the 7 train to Hunters Point. After you get out of the station, you have to cross over a bridge. It's a commercial area. I would not feel comfortable coming here at night.

Yelp
People always say, if you enjoy coffee, you shall drink black coffee. I think coffee project gave us a great explanation of what a good black coffee was. Their coffee beans are from Columbia, smells very fruity and floral. The taste of their premium coffee is very delightful, and the latte arts are cute and adorable. Try.

Yelp
Lovely date idea - the beginner latte art class. The instructor - Flook - is an absolute professional with a multitude of accolades and awards (so you know he's legit). The best part is he teaches both theory and hands-on for the latte art so you understand the rationale behind why steaming them milk at a certain angle is so important. It might be pricey at $110 for the beginner class UNTIL you realize you go through at least 30 cups of cappuccino just so you can show off your art like a five year old with a crayon on a refrigerator. Just do it. It's worth it.

Yelp
We can here and tried their specialty coffee. The ones they roast themselves, which were ~$10 per cup. Yes, I know what you're thinking, $10 for a cup of coffee?! But it was totally worth the splurge. We though of it like trying a glass of wine at a vineyard. Sum talked us through the entire process as she ground the beans and brewed the coffee. She taught us how the beans were grown, roasted, and why they chose the brewing method they used. Both cups of coffee were unlike anything I've tried before. I don't drink coffee much so to have such a professionally brewed was extremely eye opening. While we did go during Covid and the place is quieter than usual, the service Sum offered was exceptional. If you're ever bored in a Sunday afternoon, come try a specialty coffee. It's an experience.

Yelp
I'm so flipping' glad I was able to come here. I frequented their Downtown Brooklyn location often (huge fan of their drip roast beans) and was so happy for Sum (and Kaleena!) when she told me that they were opening up a cafe and campus in LIC. If you've not been to a Coffee Project location before, they are absolutely amazing. Probably my favorite in NYC. WIth the care and consideration they put into each cup they're making (and I'm sure at every step of getting the beans and roasting), it's no wonder that every cup of joe (nitro included) I've gotten from them is so smooth. I think the deconstructed latte is the embodiment of that, you can taste the quality at each step. And more importantly, they want you to (and teach you to) with it broken down. The space in Downtown Brooklyn is tight, but they were really able to make it feel serene and luxe. This LIC location...you really get to experience their whole vision with the larger space. It's a perfect combination of (there's a better architecture word for this) factory and modern cafe: tranquil, comfortable and elegant. I always love, love, love seeing the coffee roasting machine and the space very beautifully highlights it. I'm happy to just be an enthusiastic coffee consumer, so if you just want coffee (with friends or solo), it's a great place to swing by or settle in to grab a cup. If you're here to learn in one of their classes, I'm really jealous. You're learning from the top 10 in the country.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Industrial area and architecture, they're building out a roasting section, offer classes, and have great coffee. Worth the trip

Yelp
Incredible space! This functions as Coffee Project's roastery / cafe. If you haven't had their coffee, you're in for a treat! I especially love getting pour overs here, but their espresso is top of NYC as well! Oh! We have to talk about the academy! They do classes here for coffee knowledge, barista training, and the whole nine yards! Anyone can join a class, which is awesome. The instructors are some of the nicest people you'll meet, and the cafe staff are so sweet! Parking isn't too hard here, and it's only one or two stops away from Grand Central. This is a must visit if you're a coffee lover in NYC!

Yelp
More recently noticed the quality of baristas here has been on and off. If you get a good barista, you'll have an excellent cup of coffee but other times, some baristas couldn't even steam milk properly or make decent latte art. I wish they could pay more attention at this front
google avatar

Tida H.

Yelp
If you want to find LIC's best coffee spot, look no further! The owners are so passionate and knowledgeable about coffee. They take the time explaining and helping you pick your poison! Wish all the cafes in NYC are like this! They also have fun coffee workshops for beginners to serious coffee lovers too!

Yelp
Wow, Coffee Project New York | Academy was really magnificent. I also love the location. I enjoyed every single thing I have ordered there. Not to mention, the service was great and the staff was really polite. All around excellent experience.
