The Best Restaurants in Winston-Salem, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Part cafe, part grocery store, this popular Washington Park neighborhood haunt is known for its vegan and vegetarian-friendly menus. Breakfast, lunch, and brunch on the weekends are why diners flock here. Don’t miss the breakfast collard greens, cauliflower melt with bacon or tempeh, an over-easy egg, or the vegetarian Reuben with roasted beets, Swiss cheese, and smoked Thousand Island dressing. Get your caffeine fix at the coffee bar, but don’t sleep on the beet, matcha, or turmeric lattes on the Superfood Latte menu." - Nikki Miller-Ka

Good place, it had already been recommended to me and yes, one day my beautiful wife and I decided to stop by and try it. Honestly, I liked it. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and she ordered another delicious sandwich as well. We both loved it. I recommend it. Good atmosphere. In the mornings it is a bit busy, but even so, the wait time was very good.

Google
Wonderful place! Food is fantastic. Staff is great and listens to cool music. Small grocery section to get food to go. 100% will return :) Update - big, unhinged emotions from the male owner. Hoping he was just having a bad day. He chewed out his wife/cook something awful. I hope this is not a pattern of a hostile work environment, but considering the breath-holding and walking-on- egg shells response of his entire staff, this seething anger is something they've all seen before. I hope he seeks the help he needs.

Yummy!! The collard green melt and the Reuben are tasty. There are way too many cool items to buy from the co-op while you are waiting for your food.

I had been wanting to check out Acadia Foods and I'm so glad I did! I showed up on a Saturday ~9 am and already many of their tables were full of folks eating breakfast. You order at the beverage bar and then you can get a number and sit at a table to eat there, or get takeout. We got their bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit and it was excellent! The cheese was wonderfully melty and the biscuit was so good--a soft and tender biscuit rather than a flaky biscuit, which was perfect to sandwich the bacon and eggs. The iced chai tea latte was really good, but a little sweet. I missed that there was a $1 upcharge for oat milk, so just be aware that an iced tea latte with oat milk will set you back $6.50! All in all, a nice Saturday morning treat and I would definitely visit again! I look forward to trying some of their other deli menu items next.

Google
We stayed at an air Bnb practically next door and we ate breakfast there each morning. Everything we had was great. We had the bagel, breakfast grilled cheese , granola, and the biscuit French toast. It was so cute inside.

Google
I had a hankering for pastrami and a pickle while heading west on I-40 and the map pulled this place up. I was *delighted* to find out they offered a reuben made with beets as well as a selection of pies. Got a slice of coconut and it was possibly the best pie crust I ever had. Would I move to Winston-Salem to be able to go here more often? I mean, I'm not ruling it out.

Google
Egg cooked to perfection. Delicious bacon great vegan and gf options on menu. Friendly staff. They lost 2 stars because the place needs cleaning and organizing. Looks pretty rundown inside. Also the biscuit I was looking the most forward to was really bad. It tasted like it had been cooked in old oil and then reheated in a dirty oily oven. It just had the worst flavor and was waxy from the old bad oil.

Google
I had a pastrami sandwich on sourdough. I’ve been to Jewish delis on both coasts. The Quality beats them all. Everyone in my party had a great meal. Totally worth it.

Yelp
Acadia is a small but unique grocery store that carries a variety of organic produce, specialty items, and everyday essentials and booze! Yes a few local beer and wine. But what really keeps me coming back is their deli and coffee shop inside! You do order your food at the coffee area and or if you have anything your purchasing. They're breakfast/brunch menu is my favorite! This time, we tried the breakfast cauliflower melt--it might sound unusual, but it was surprisingly delicious! I'll definitely be ordering that again. I also had the breakfast steak sandwich, packed with caramelized onions, cheese, egg, and steak--flavorful and satisfying. The space is cozy, with limited indoor seating and some outdoor options. It's perfect for a small group (four people is ideal, but more than six might feel a little tight). You can grab a drink from their fridge or order from the coffee shop for a fresh brew. They also have their own parking, which is a plus. While they offer a great selection of produce and organic groceries, I personally visit more for their deli items and specials. If you're looking for a unique breakfast or a fresh, locally sourced meal, Acadia is worth checking out!

Yelp
Was eager to try this place for brunch from the reviews. First impression (interacting with cashier) was very disappointing. She was combative and unhelpful. As this was our first visit, I asked her"what do you recommend?" She refused to offer any suggestions or her point of view and had major attitude. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and my husband the bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. The food was fine -- nothing special or better than average. The banana jam was the highlight of the meal for me. Cute space + average food + poor customer service = 2 stars

Yelp
I was dying to try the collard greens breakfast sandwich, but they were out! They were actually out of a lot of items. I recommend going early ! I settled for the bologna breakfast Sammy and it did not disappoint. Id say an elevated version of fried Bologna, over easy egg, cheese, on white bread. Very satisfying. Lots of vegan options too if that's your thing! It is a little pricy for breakfast, but no critiques on the food, they know what they're doing !

Yelp
The sandwiches here are far and away the main attraction, for me anyway. Next on my bucket list was the Thanks V - sliced turkey breast, cranberry sauce, cheddar cheese, red onion, sprouts, and lettuce on multigrain bread. I called in the pickup order as I headed to the restaurant. The menu lists the Thanks V under Cold Sandwiches, and that is exactly what I received - at least 1day in the refrigerator cold! This sandwich was obviously not freshly made and was impossible for me to eat at that temperature, all I could taste was cold. I have never encountered this before! I simply threw the ice cold, $10 sandwich in the trash! Obviously there will be no reorder of this item, and whether there is a return visit is in doubt - we'll see!

Yelp
This sandwich is the sandwich of my dreams. Vinegary and savory collards, good cheese, runny egg, lil Mayo, well cooked tempeh and great bread? Acadia has fantastic sandwiches and every time I go I'm like 'maybe I'll try something else' and I do! All good! And I come back to this sandwich. We were in on a Friday morning: super quick service and very chill vibes. Please bus your tables, grab some water and hot sauce when you sit down and get this sandwich.

Yelp
The food was really good. I had the breakfast burrito that was warm but it was good. The steak gravy and biscuits were vey vey good. We will return.

Yelp
On the rare occasion, you find a business that's totally unassuming and perfectly comfortable being exactly what they set out to be. In short, Business as Art. Welcome Friends, to Acadia Foods. I came in for breakfast, but more about that in a moment. The moment you walk in, there's a perfect comfort and ease about the space and the vibe. Casual, powerfully community focused, arty, funky, and down-to-earth cool. Acadia Foods is at the same time coffee shop, local eatery, co-op, provision shop, and wine bar. Their grocery selection is well curated and perfect for day-to-day provisioning with healthy, mostly-organic and local foods available. Apparently there is a co-op where members can sign up for member-select CDA boxes. And everyone is welcome to shop and buy whatever you need for your daily needs. The coffee bar is stocked with the usual bevvys, and the barista, Salem, was awesome, well informed (I had questions), and genuinely kind. And the cappy she whipped up was excellent. Oh...and they have ceramic mugs for "drink here" coffees. Kudos!! Now for the food...I ordered the ham & Brie breakfast sando. Absolutely...love at first bite!! Thin shaved succulent ham, melted Brie, a perfectly over medium runny-yoke friend egg, sautéed spinach, and a dash of Dijon on one of the best lightly charred, fluffy, chewy rolls I've had in a long time. Totally unexpected and completely delicious. This is my new perfect breakfast sando!! Add to all this, a very respectable selection of bottles of wine and chilled beer to-go, or they will chill and/or open bottles for a $9 corkage. And wines available by the glass. Acadia Food is a wonderful community market/deli/coffee shop/wine shop that excels at every turn. They truly have a sense of themselves and are unapologetically, beautiful who they are. I love being here and will absolutely be back again and again!! Cheers!

Yelp
We've had Acadia on our radar for a couple of months and finally stopped in this morning as we headed east out of town. The exterior of the building is a cool well loved brick building within the Washington historic neighborhood. We instantly thought it reminded us of South Eugene in Oregon. We were immediately greeted by two young men working at the counter. They were friendly and helpful and when we told them we hadn't been in before they were quick to suggest their favorite menu items. We wanted to look over the menu so we took them to a table and looked it over. My wife decided on the BAT (Bacon, Arugula and Tomato) sandwich with a side of fresh fruit. I chose the Smoked Sausage sandwich with a bag of chips. We placed our order back at the counter and then decided to walk through the market area while our sandwiches were prepared. Acadia offers everything from fresh produce, to beer and wine and many other local treats over approximately 3 aisles. The prices are reasonable for a small neighborhood store and we were impressed with the local selections. Our sandwiches arrived in a timely manner and looked yummy. My wife thought the BAT sandwich was delicious and the fresh fruit hit the spot. I enjoyed my smoked sausage sandwich but did think it lacked flavor. Overall it was good and we are glad we stopped.

Yelp
This is by far now one of my favorite breakfast places in Winston Salem. Love the location, and the vibe! Our meals were delicious. I ordered breakfast bowl with Brie and wild mushrooms. Homemade pastries were hard to resist! Service- you order at the counter- and they deliver food when it's ready. Very friendly! Get the Affogato!! Espresso ice cream float!

Yelp
I was craving a biscuit so we decided to finally try out acadia foods and this chicken biscuit was everything I could have ever wanted and more. The spicy maple Dijon sauce is to die for What we got : Chicken Biscuit Everything Bagel with Cream cheese Breakfast Burrito Chocolate chess pie square BlackBerry Lemon Poptart You walk in and order and then your food it brought out to your table. This was a great experience and we walked around the store after breakfast to see what all they had to offer. Can't wait to go back and try their coffee because I've heard great things!

Yelp
One of the best sandwich spots in the triad! Tucked away in Washington Park is one of the best sandwich shops in the triad. From their collard green melt to their steak, egg and cheese it's all delicious. They have traditional counter service and their menu includes lots of sandwich options for lunch and breakfast. One thing I love are their vegetarian options (some of the best in Winston). We recently went for brunch and the service is always top notch + the food came out quickly! We got the steak, egg and cheese biscuit with a side of potatoes and the breakfast burrito with chorizo. Everything was flavorful and fresh. One of the staples in WS!

Yelp
I finally got to try this place out with my coworkers. I had added it to my list a few weeks back, and as a double bonus, one of our contractors treated us! We arrived around 1130am, there's a small parking lot, but we beat the lunch rush so that wasn't an issue. We ordered at the counter (I got a small hot mocha, the fried ribeye sandwich and a side of pasta salad, everyone else got a pastrami or reuben) and then picked a nearby table. It's nice that this place doubles as a small market/grocer, I perused the aisles while waiting for our lunch and of course ended up getting some extra goodies (chocolate chips and trail mix). Our food came out about in about 10 mins. Everything looked delicious- my ribeye was tasty, but definitely could have used a dipping sauce. It was a standard portion size, I actually could've finished it but ended up saving half for later anyway. The pasta salad was okay, could've used a bit more seasoning (salt, pepper, something), and I liked my mocha but think it could've been just a tad bit hotter. All in all though, this was a cute spot to stop at for lunch and I would definitely come back again.

Yelp
This is the second year in a row we've stopped here for lunch driving back from the beach to Ohio and we plan to make it a tradition. It's our little mid-drive oasis, full of veggie and gluten free options our whole family loves. The collard greens sandwich and the chocolate chess pie... oh. my. gosh. The kids love the banana and raspberry jam PBJs!

Yelp
This place is a gem. Biscuit with jam and coffee. Delicious. Funky and artsy. Local. Neighborhood vibes. Great place to disappear and reset.

Yelp
Ummm I have certainly been sleeping on Acadia Foods. I am admittedly boujee, especially when it comes to food. Specifically brunch. You'll find me ordering an elaborate eggs Benedict special and an outlandish cocktail concoction more often than not. Acadia Foods is not that. But this boujee breakfast gal was blown away by their food. We stopped in on a Saturday after the Cobblestone market around 10 AM. There aren't a ton of places around who serve breakfast on Saturdays and the rest of my group love Acadia, so I was stoked. Acadia serves their breakfast menu on Saturday and the brunch menu on Sundays - there are some things that populate both menus, but both have a few specialities only available on their respective day. They have a little market inside and we waited at the counter to place our orders. I got a chai latte and it was pretty good! I ordered the breakfast steak sandwich as my entree with a side of the crispy potatoes. Guys. This sandwich!!! Holy smokes! A plentiful heap of seasoned steak (I think it was a shaved/chopped ribeye?), Monterrey Jack cheese, caramelized onions, scrambled egg and mayo. I died and went to Heaven. First of all, the bread that was so blessed to hold this masterpiece of a sandwich was a work of art in and of itself. Pillowy, chewy and soft in all the right ways. The cohesion of flavors was perfect. I wouldn't change anything. I'm a fan of a plentiful portion of mayonnaise (Duke's, of course) and they delivered. Everything about this sandwich was just magical. Nothing over the top or crazy, but they just executed it flawlessly. The crispy potatoes on the side were so delicious too! I also sampled the ham and Brie and it was quite divine. Also a favorite was the collard green melt with bacon! They have a tempeh option for vegan/vegetarian folks. Counter service, bus your own tables, market style breakfast, but doggone it works! Totally out of my usual style but rest assured - I'll be back again and again.

Yelp
Every weekend I see the brunch specials on Instagram for Acadia Foods, and this time we finally got around to stopping in. We were blown away with how far the regular menu expands beyond the specials - there's something for everyone here. We are so lucky to have a place like this in Winston. It very much reminded us of Root Cellar out of Carrboro, which is one of our favorite spots. It's a market with all the necessities and fresh produce, with the addition of a killer food and beverage menu. To drink I got the beet latte and it was divine! My meal was the Brie and egg plate and mmmmm..... wow. They don't skimp on the ingredients here. Plenty of Brie and oyster mushrooms with a good helping of spinach and potatoes - it was amazing. My husband got the bananas foster French toast - definitely the best execution we've seen of this dish. We've got a new regular to add to our rotation. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Yelp
So so I've been to Acadia many times as it's right in the neighborhood of my friend's house who I'm staying with. But this is my first time revealing them. I love this place. They have great sandwiches, and a really nice local market where I can get fresh guts like eggs from a pasture-raised farm. The service is always great, the people are super friendly, and they hold local events supporting causes that align with my views. If you're in the area and need a nice sandwich for lunch then I would definitely recommend this place.

Jose R.

Yelp
Excellent food. Vegan choices abound. I would recommend this highly and worth the time.

Yelp
If nothing else, please go here for the breakfast sandwiches! That collard green melt is just everything of the sort! The sandwiches are hearty, huge, flavorful, juicy, all of the above. I have never actually been inside the establishment, but my significant other will get take out for us. The sandwiches are still hot when he gets home! This is really a great spot and I want to actually go sometime and try out other menu items. I just cannot quit that collard green melt, YUM.
google avatar

Luke B.

Yelp
Great coffee, great food, great groceries! We had their biscuit cinnamon roll which has leapt into my top list of Winston Cinny rolls. I also had a breakfast sandwich that was really tasty. I'm pumped now to try the local bacon and ice cream we bought at Acadia. This place should be busier on a Saturday morning
google avatar

Christian M.

Yelp
Delicious! Went for brunch and got plenty of good stuff. We had the breakfast burrito, mushroom pate, and breakfast grilled cheese. We also took a slice of the blueberry pie, lemon pie, and a coconut bar to go. All delicious and fresh! It was a little busy and took some time for our food to come out so plan accordingly!

Todd F.

Yelp
Great spot for breakfast. Must have collard melt and the biscuit sandwiches are equally good. Great coffee, cool vibe.

Yelp
My father told me once you find love at the top of the mountain. I never knew what that meant but it stuck with me after all these years. Kinda like my holiday pounds I put on. Anyhow, this place has all the num nums for your tum tum. I just left the troop and decided to grab some lunch. A friend had suggested this diamond in the rock. Talk about a freaky vibe! This place had it all. I decided to grab a Java with my sandwich and took a seat. I loved it from the frost bite to the bites I had later on. And that coffee had me zipping like some Levi's at a beer bust! Let's just say I'll be back for sure. Over and over again. Maybe someday I'll find the top of the mountain. Maybe someday...

Yelp
Good food, fast service, friendly staff. Also a grocery store for many unique hard to find items
google avatar

Alexandra F.

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in Winston! Locally owned and operated grocery and restaurant with plenty of organic products and very vegan and vegetarian friendly. They have a few tables outside where you can bring your 4 legged friend. Great brunch specials on Sunday. My favorites regular menu items are the collard green melt and the cauliflower melt, both can be made with an egg for more of a breakfast dish and can have tempeh or bacon!
google avatar

Barrie P.

Yelp
My son and I had brunch here after going to the barbershop. The staff was so nice and the atmosphere is cool. I had a mocha and he had a hot chocolate. Both were awesome. I had the blt and potatoes. I really enjoyed both items. The sandwich had a ton of flavor. The potatoes were crisp without being greasy. The biscuits are amazing and you can tell the bacon is good quality. The baked goods looked so good and we will try them next time. They also get bonus points for the free little library in front.
google avatar

Brendon N.

Yelp
Had the chicken biscuit with crispy potatoes and it was delicious. They have the best breakfast that I have had in Winston by a significant margin.
google avatar

Jim C.

Yelp
Acadia offers totally unique sandwiches as well as a freshly baked desert selection. I chose Acadia because they offered a patio which allowed our friends to bring their dog to lunch. Our party had four guests, each of us had a different sandwich: 1) Collard Greens with bacon, 2) Cauliflower with meat substitute, Steak sandwich and a 4) Reuben. I highly recommend the collard green sandwich. It was one of the tastiest and unique sandwiches I have had in years.

S C.

Yelp
The absolute best Rueben I've ever had. I ordered the vegetarian option ... the seitan was perfectly cooked. Bread crisp and perfectly grilled even with all the fillings... not soggy at all. The fries? Sublime. Perfectly seasoned and crisp (fries are more like fried potatoes but still... delicious and top notch). This place is such a winner I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed. Winston has some of the best eating places in the country!

Z T.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Winston! The half restaurant-half local grocery store vibes are immaculate and the food/drinks are always delicious.
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
Everything on this menu is delicious! I strongly recommend stopping here for breakfast or lunch!!Friendly staff is the icing on top!!!

Ashley K.

Yelp
Absolutely recommend 1000%! Hubby and I were delighted to find a place with good coffee + plenty of vegan/vegetarian options. Any time I can have a good Reuben (with seitan) I'm a happy girl. This area is super cute and funky. Looking forward to returning.

Earl B.

Yelp
Ham and Brie breakfast sandwich is the best. Coffee is delicious. Jon knows his wine. What a neat place!
google avatar

Meredith S.

Yelp
Wanted to try after some reviews about the steak sandwich. We got it to go to go to our normal watering hole. I just... I don't see the hype. Neither sandwich blew us away. I ended up just tossing mine. I'm willing to give it another try but I would much rather go to J&J across the street.
google avatar

Isa G.

Yelp
The breakfast burrito is to die for!!! I was so impressed by their grocery section and their take on an Earl Grey tea with oat milk was a delicious treat for the ride home! Excited to try more of their menu in the future- yum!!!

Yelp
Collard green sandwich with tempeh was just what I needed for Sunday brunch. The atmosphere and ambiance is very nice.

Yelp
Had my first experience here today and will be back. My friend and I went in for breakfast around 10:30 and the place was steady but not slammed. Seat yourself on the outside deck at one of the umbrella tables or inside. I was a little confused at first because the process of how this works was not clear. 1/2 of the store is a food co-op/grocery store and the other is the café and deli. Order food and drinks then pay at the café/coffee counter and they give you a number which you take to your table. Iced Tea and Water are basically self serve once you pay so do not expect wait staff to come check on you, which is great with me. The service was fantastic! from the gentleman who took our order at the counter, to the young lady making my coffee, great first impression of your service. Then came the food! I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit and added bacon, my friend ordered the breakfast grilled cheese. My biscuit was soft and fluffy, even with breakfast service ending in less that 30 minutes. The scrambled eggs on the biscuit were actually kind of grilled, I do not know how else to explain it, they were heavenly and the cheese was melted in the eggs! the bacon was crispy and so good. The biscuit itself was so pillow soft and not dry at all. It had a great butter taste and was clearly home made. I ordered a side of the breakfast potatoes and they were just as good as everything else. The breakfast grilled cheese that my friend ordered was on an artisan type sourdough bread (not thick cut but larger slice if that makes sense) it was toasted perfectly with bacon, eggs, cheese, mayo, tomato, spinach and I am not sure what else. Both meals plus one iced coffee was about $22, not bad at all. One of the workers wiping off the tables spoke with us about the story of the café and store and it is a great place to hang out. I have not been for lunch but I can say this is one of the best kept breakfast secrets in Winston Salem. While they do not ask you to do so you are welcome to bus your own tables and help them out, it is not a large staff and I am sure when they are busy it is greatly appreciated. Support small business like Acadia Foods or they may not be here tomorrow, and write a review, Yelp is how we found this place that we have driven by thousands of times.

Heather C.

Yelp
Food is great - they have really stepped up the take away lunch game Chill environment Lots of vegan and GF options

Luna Z.

Yelp
I went there with my coworkers for lunch. The atmosphere is great. I ordered the smoke sausage sandwich and it was delicious! What I didn't expect is how good the bread is, I'm was totally amazed.

Yelp
We love coming to Acadia Foods whenever we are in the area. Sandwiches are fantastic! Try a breakfast sandwich you won't be disappointed you did!

Yelp
Absolutely the best music of any coffee shop / restaurant in town... It helps when you have an owner who's also a street educated musician\musicologist! Amazing local vibe... Come as you are.... If you're having a crap week... And you need to be lifted.....Come here for chef level handcrafted eats as well as a music education! Plenty of healthy choices, hand made pastries, locals, top of the line coffee and music that doesn't freakin' suck.!! By the way..... *Wine selection *Organic food co_op *Tons of parking *Large outdoor deck *Beer selection *Chill staff *Cobblestone Farmers Market .....Thank you John and Jess for countless hours of hard work and creative effort to build a neighborhood place where everyone is comfortable, welcome, and treated like family. At Acadia Foods, life is perfect. Thanks John n Jess... Fight the good fight! Jonathan

Yelp
This place is so awesome!!! Since moving to Winston-Salem by way of LA and NYC it's been hard to find vegan options that I really like and are on the much more healthier side. This place is it!!! I've been vegan since the 90s and over the last year have mostly become a fruitarian....but once/week when I decide to spoil myself, Acadia Foods is my go to. Have had the beet Reuben and the TLT which is the vegan version of a BLT. Honestly if you haven't given this place a try, you sure in hell should. Will not disappoint plus the owners are super nice.
google avatar

Amanda A.

Yelp
This neighborhood market is a great place to grab a bite. The deli offers build your own breakfast. I had two eggs the sausage and a biscuit. The biscuit was fresh and lite. Not a heavy biscuit. BTW the coffee is amazing and nice and strong. They offer a good selection of beer and wine too.
google avatar

M T.

Yelp
What a gem! Serving up dishes for plant eaters (gracias) and "meat"atarians alike with the freshest ingredients. If nothing else try the biscuits. Crunchy outside and warm layers. Just like I like it! Your belly will thank you.
google avatar

Jeremiah B.

Yelp
Some of the best pastries, breakfast, and lunch/dinner foods in town. Great prices and great people in there. I highly recommend the collard green melt with bacon. they also have many vegan/veggie options
google avatar

Yelp
Road tripping to the mountains and hate wasting my foods on the junk that litters the exit ramps, so my husband and I hit Google maps and voila: Acadia Market. Want some healthy, proudly served chow? This is your hangout. My Jack Straw sandwich nestled crisp veggies inside a perfectly formed spackle of mustardy cream cheese. The sandwich arrived lickity-split and I ate every bite. The creative menu, genuine customer service, squeaky clean and delightfully quirky atmosphere is def worth a return! Only wish I lived closer.

Yelp
Cute space, local goods, friendly staff, tasty bites- what more could you ask for!
