The Best Vineyards and Restaurants to Visit in Missouri’s Wine Country | Eater

"Operating since 1855 and run by the same family for seven generations, this long-lived winery remains a regional institution celebrated for its floral, dry Vignoles that won best white varietal at the 2024 Missouri Wine Competition. The property includes the 1855 Cellar Bistro in the original wine cellar, where a signature burger—two wagyu smash patties with cheddar and decadent bacon jam—is a standout alongside cellar-focused offerings." - Meera Nagarajan

Loved the wine selection, and Paula and Brooke were amazing hosts. Peaches, Timmy and Clementine are awesome ambassa-cats! Will definitely be back when we're in the area.

Google
One of my favorite stops in hermann! the service was top notch and the flight selections were fun! we took home a couple of bottles and really liked the Cats Meow and Judges Heir! Will definitely be back again!

Google
This has always been my favorite winery in the Hermann area, forever. It has great wine, fabulous employees, incredible views, excellent food and cats! No other winery has the comfortable, relaxing vibe of Puchta, none. Skip the crazy crowds and come here for what you're searching for in a winery experience. You'll not be disappointed.

Becky Auvil

Google
We LOVE this winery! The pours for the tasting are generous, and you even get to keep the glass! The employee serving was awesome, and friendly. We enjoyed the flat bread, and the pretzel was so good! Highly recommend the Cat's Meow slushy!!! Music was outstanding outside. We will be back!

I've been to Adam Puchta Winery many times over the years and am never disappointed. Aside from having a variety of reds and whites to appeal to most preferences, they're always organized for optimal service. On Wine Trail event weekends, they've got the trail line separate from other visitors, so everyone gets served quickly with fresh food and a sample pour. NOTE: This is THE place to go during any Hermann Wine Trail; their food is consistently the most thoughtful and delicious, and always perfectly paired.

Google
We had a great time here this last weekend. We were doing the BBQ and berries wine trail. The outside seating was comfortable and loved the kitten hanging around. We both had slushies, it was perfect just people watching in the big tent outside. Of all the places on the wine trail this one was the most friendly and easiest to mill around. We will definitely hit it again.

Wonderful experience!! My friend and I did the wine trolley for our shared birthdays and went twice in one day to the Adam Puchta winery. We were treated like royalty by chef Eric when he whipped up amazing food for us even though we arrived both times outside of the bistro hours (our mistake in timing). Not only did he accommodate us by opening up early and staying late, he treated us to a nice surprise. Exceptional service, wine, and food! This was definitely a highlight of our birthday celebration: someone going out of their way just to make our day special! We will definitely be back and tell everyone about this wonderful experience!

Google
Me and my wife went for a tasting. Nice facility. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. All their selections are top shelf. Didn't hit the bistro but word on the street is the food is great. No notes. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Very fun wine tasting room with very generous pours which makes for an enjoyable visit. The gift shop has so many wonderful options. No visit to Hermann is complete without visiting Adam Puchta.

Yelp
Stopped here while in Hermann on the trolley for the day. Honestly, not my favorite wines, but the employee we ended up working with was great! We got there decently early on a Friday, and had to wander around a bit before someone helped us. I am pretty sure one of the employees saw me and went immediately to an employees only area and shut the door - almost like he was running away from me. Once we found someone to help us, she was great! Very kind, informative and fun! She led us through our tasting and poured us a glass to share.

Yelp
The Oldest Continuously Owned Family Farm Winery in the Country! I am absolutely in love with this winery... why you ask because they have 3 resident cats that they take care of! Vet visits and all. They love their felines so much that people drop off their unwanted cats at this winery, knowing they will be loved and cared for. You know a person has a good heart when a cat can approach them. I wish this family owned winery a lifetime full of happiness and continued success. Also, they make some yummy tasting sweet wines, koolaid wine as I call it. And offer free cave tours! 6 sweet wine tastings for $10 & you get to keep the glass. Thank you for making our tastebuds happy and thank you for giving love to all the cats!

Yelp
Beautiful location, excellent wine and food. We love taking the trolley to and from this location. Servers are knowledgeable and friendly.

Yelp
For Missouri wines, this 7th-generation family of vinters knows how to grow grapes & produce very good vintages. Covering the gamut from dry whites to sherry & ports, 6-7 are award winners. Much prefer their white varietals to many others in local production, even the reds are decent. Excellent value, most hold up well to other states wines, and delicious pairings can be made. Highly recommend.

Yelp
A great winery in Hermann. Stacy was super nice. The tastings were $6 for 6 wines. I really enjoyed them. There was plenty of parking.
google avatar

Sam P.

Yelp
Wish I could give a review on the wine tasting but I never got a chance to do it. We pulled up and there were 7 cars in the parking lot so I thought "great we'll be able to get tasting right away." We went to the tasting room and it is TINY! Good luck getting any sort of group tasting here. We waited 15 minutes outside the tasting room before an employee said "wait there someone will grab you soon" then another 10 minutes later a different employee says "why are you waiting outside? You can go in" so we went in and then the person inside said "if you could please wait outside I cant serve you yet" Confusing and disorganized. I would love to come back and try this but the tasting room is a joke. It can hold maybe 10-15 people. So definitely not worth the trip.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
Kinda disappointed by our experience here. We were really excited to come, but we never were actually able to go into the tasting room. We stood outside for 15 minutes because the tasting room was full. Finally after 15 minutes someone came and talked to us and she said just give it a few more minutes then you can go in. Another 15 minutes later another coworker came out and told us that we could just go in and didn't have to wait outside. As soon as we got inside, the worker inside told us to please go back outside and wait until she was ready for us. Very confusing and disorganized. We were willing to wait but kept getting mixed information from the staff so we ended up just leaving. The tasting room is very small. The employee outside was also smoking cigarettes under the patio right by the front doors. We were drowning in the smell while we were waiting in line. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
It's hands down our favorite winery in Hermann. Do I even need to explain? First of all, a huge parking lot. A lot of the wineries don't have this luxury. Second, it's an affordable tasting. And they're pretty giving with them. Thirdly, there's a spot for EVERYONE to sit. Fourth, THEY HAVE FOOD. Good food. And lastly, my seller, clean bathrooms. Go here.
google avatar

Yelp
We had a great time at Adam Puchta. We had great weather and the outdoor patio/tent/music was in full swing. This was our first stop on the Hermann Trolly, so that probably also made it more enjoyable because we were just getting started and hadn't had too much to drink yet. We waiting briefly in line for a tasting but got in pretty quickly. The tasting was quick and they had more sweet wines than I would have liked, but the lady was very nice and everybody had a nice time. Chocolate and crackers were available for the tasting which was nice! It was a bit crammed in there, but again, we had a good time. We each got a drink and made our way down to the tent. No complaints down there and we were able to finish our drinks and get on the trolly in good time. The wine overall wasn't my favorite and the variety wasn't what I would have liked, but I enjoyed the glass that I ordered and would go back!

Yelp
This has always been one of my families favorite places to visit for the great tasting experience. We got to experience their Norton 7 course dinner last night which made my opinion of the winery even higher. The dinner was amazing, the tasting was fantastic, and the people were the best. Parker told such great stories and history. Lee gave such a great explanation of the wines and the property (definitely coming back for an elevated tasting). Chef Alex made an amazing dinner... his mini beef Wellington and chocolate lava cake were over the top.

Yelp
TL:DR - Great place if you're looking to just drink wine and party. But the wine itself is pretty basic with no real stand outs. There's also zero measures taken to reduce the spread of covid outside of doing wine tastings outside and their wines are $5-$7 cheaper if you buy from the local save-a-lot. -------------------------------------- Wines we're fine, nothing really stood out as particularly good. To be honest, wine preferences will vary from person to person, so maybe you like wines I don't and vice versa. So really what it comes down to is the ambiance and other attributes of the winery itself. Came in on a Saturday and they had a live band playing that people were enjoying. Admission was $5, but that also got you a coupon for tastings of 6 of their wines (pre-selectedl. The seating area is relatively small and condensed in front of the stage. So if you like live music, this is a great spot. If you're trying to be responsible during the pandemic, this place is not the place for you. While the wine tasting is moved outside, which is great, literally NO ONE was wearing a mask. Zero customers and zero employees. The bottles of wine themselves, were rather expensive, the bottle of hunter's red that I got was $17 plus tax. What's frustrating about this is that they had the exact same bottle at the save-a-lot in town for about $10. In fact, the save-a-lot in town had several bottles of Adam puchta wine (not the entire roster though) for about $5-$7 cheaper than at the winery. I don't get why it would be cheaper there than at the source. Doesn't make any sense to me. Given that I really only like the hunter's red, I'll just skip the winery and go straight to the local save-a-lot.

Yelp
One of my favorite Hermann wineries, and really awesome wine!!! But shhhhhh.....theres a secret. Go down to the cellar room....its amazing!!!! The bartenders are awesome, and its away from crowds. I could have stayed there all day. They also have the cutest gift shop with the best wone knick knacks!!! They are also known for their wine slushies! Hellooooo day drinking. Dont pass this winery up when out and about!
google avatar

Christina M.

Yelp
Stopping in here on a Saturday you wouldn't have any idea that we are in a pandemic. Absolutely no social distancing and virtually no masks. Lots of big groups were here - bachelorette, birthday parties, etc.. We only stayed because we had our own chairs to sit away from everyone. The lines were long and crowded. The wines were too sweet for my preference, but the wine slushies were refreshing on a hot day. The property is neat and I would consider coming back once the country has a better handle on COVID, but no sooner than that.

Hannah N.

Yelp
My favorite wine and winery in Hermann! The staff are so kind, the wine is delicious, and the atmosphere is so tranquil and inviting. There is plenty of seating outside to reconnect with nature. Will be going again!
google avatar

Rena G.

Yelp
This is such a pretty, scenic winery. The barn for wine tasting is unique and interesting. Grab a wine or wine slushee in the summer and sit outdoors and enjoy the scenery. Bonus, they have cats that live there, which is fun for the cat lovers.
google avatar

Chris L.

Yelp
Was good. Cheap tasting at $5 for 6 wines. Very very quiet on a Thursday afternoon. Overall, we liked the atmosphere and bought a few bottles. Staff didn't wear masks, but there are shields everywhere. Didn't bother us as we were wearing them and I guess it makes sense since it's a small town. We will check it out again next time we are in Hermann.
google avatar

Nicole T.

Yelp
Wines were good but the service was sub par. The tasting was quick and to the point. We felt very rushed and unappreciated. We bought a few bottles of wine and each was placed in a bag as opposed to other patrons whose wine was places in a carrier. Would not recommend.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
We had a good time here. The wine tasting was down the hill in the cellar. The cost was $5 for 8 tastings or $10 for 16 tastings. We did the 8 since we were tasting at so many places. We needed to pace ourselves. Haha!! Wine was served in pretty glasses & some was served with a bite of food that complimented the wine. Staff was very friendly. We bought a couple bottles & went out back to the tables in the yard. Cats wander throughout the premises looking for attention. Very sweet.
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
Walked in for a tasting. $5 for a six-count flight. Walked out with four bottles we really liked. Service was amazing from a kitty cat greeting you outside to sommelier Danny. Funny kind knowledgeable patient friendly and honest. A truly pleasurable afternoon.
google avatar

Scarlett H.

Yelp
Yelp says they're open until 6, but we went by at 4 on a Saturday in June and they were closed. Someone was outside at the gate and said they were closed on Sunday as well. The last time we visited, we enjoyed the place. We're unlikely to drive back, though, if they're randomly closed.
google avatar

Katie A.

Yelp
I seriously hate doing this! I love the wine! Love it! However we decided to eat their today and that was a HUGE mistake!! We got a pepperoni and bacon pizza, seems really hard to mess up....right? Well we got it and first off they put cheddar cheese on pizza... who does that?! Then we go to get a piece and the toppings all fall off and the crust is under cooked. We were unable to get any help as everyone was to busy. Drink the wine, NEVER eat here... trust me!
google avatar

Derek D.

Yelp
I'm only giving it 2 stars because are server was very friendly I was there 11/16 saterday and the tasting room is a tiny "shed" with so many people you can't move worst wine experience in my life
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
This place is wonderful!! My husband and I stopped here for the first time for our anniversary and were very impressed. It's a small little shop built in the 1850's, and that's definitely part of its charm. We arrived right before a big trolley full of wine tasters stopped in, so be prepared for a crowd. The service was wonderful and the lady supplying our tasting was very knowledgeable about the wine and the Puchta Daniel in general. We really enjoyed the Hunter's Red and Cat's Meow. She even gave us an taste of their Sherry since it was our anniversary- so good!! Apparently dogs are allowed inside and on the property so we'll have to bring along our pup next time. Can't wait for our next visit.
google avatar

Kate B.

Yelp
One of the best in Hermann. They had an awesome wine tasting for just $5. The wine slushies were fun, Carmel apple seasonal. Lines were a little long, but not shocked for a beautiful 60 degree day in November. The view wasn't my favorite but the wine quality was unmatched compared to others in the area.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Great winery - the wine was good; love that they provided pairing snacks with the tastings! There are two different tasting rooms - one with their 8 bestsellers ($5/tasting) and a second to taste all others for $1/pour. The food was also excellent. We ordered a regular pizza (sausage + mushroom) and it was to DIE for. Fun atmosphere; there was live music and lots of seating available. This is definitely a can't-miss winery if you're near Hermann!
google avatar

Beth E.

Yelp
This is a little off the beaten trail, but we found it. Weren't warmly greeted, and felt rushed through the tasting. We like dry wines and they had a few. We bought a bottle of red and drank it that night. It tasted better during the tasting. There is a small gift shop and prices are comparable to the other wineries.
google avatar

Jesica B.

Yelp
I did a tasting here and it was amazing!! The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. They had one of the best gift shops I saw while in Hermann. They had cheeses and sausages and all kinds of preserved goods. The wines were very tasty and aromatic as well. We were given chocolate and cheese during the tasting to enhance the flavor. It was perfect with what we were drinking. I would definitely recommend making this a priority when visiting!!
google avatar

Darla E.

Yelp
I love the wines here and the wine tasting. You taste 8 wines, your choice based on what you like with recommendations from the staff. Their vignoles and traminette are by far my favorite white MO wines. They give you samples of key lime cookies with the vignoles and chocolate chip pieces with some of the Norton grape wines. Really nice place, nice wines. Discounts on cases easily give you a bottle or two free.

Rick S.

Yelp
By far best winery in Hermann. We visited on a weekday in November so very few other people. The person doing our tasting was very knowledgeable and very friendly. Great experience. Thought the selection of dry reds was very good. The Chamberson and Norton wines were very good. My point of reference are California reds and these stacked up nicely. Not better but not bad. Don't understand comments from other reviewers that all they had were "sweet" wines. Look forward to coming back on a weekend when there is live music.
google avatar

Becky D.

Yelp
As far as Covid precautions, tasting room is small but they are limiting the number of people. We found a couple of wines that we enjoyed.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon for our first taste of Missouri wines. It took a while but three of us sampled almost every wine they make and there wasn't a bad one in the bunch. Friendly and knowledgable workers, great location and atmosphere, good prices, highly recommend a visit!
google avatar

Anne G.

Yelp
We almost missed this winery due to rain and flooding of the road. Thankfully we had a ride and was able to go back. We were able to do a wine tasting with a worker who was very knowledgeable and interesting to talk with. There are so many wines to choose from, some where a bit sweet for me, but there are many more I did not try! There are also sweet cats that roamed the winery.

Jessica D.

Yelp
So many great wine choices! We did the wine tasting and had to get a wine slushee. It was SO delicious!
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
It's a winery with kitties!!! That's the headline for the review of a winery I briefly visited last summer. There are cats everywhere outside. Inside, that's not the case. The staff explained that cats roam onto the property or get dumped. The owner makes sure they're altered and they get to stay on the property for life. There are many sources of food and water as well as adequate cat shelters. This has me won over. It was $5 to taste wines at Adam Puchta. They had quite a few wines, but the only one that struck me was Cat's Meow. Yes, they named a wine after the kitties! Cat's Meow is, I think, the only wine I have ever purchased for the bottle. It was drinkable, but not sweet like I like. I gave one bottle of Cat's Meow (hot pink label, big white fluffy cat) to a friend who liked it very much, and I still have my bottle (red label, black cat). I like wine, but I love kitties. Seeing how happy the cats are at Adam Puchta inspired me to start spaying/neutering feral cats in my community. If you see a feral cat, please remember that it didn't choose that sort of a life, and consider contacting a local feral cat coalition to find a suitable way for it to live its life. Thank you, Adam Puchta Winery, for caring.

Yelp
My grandparents have a farm in Hermann, so I sometimes feel like I am a bit of an expert. I have now made it to every winery in Hermann, so I feel like I can honestly say Adam Puchta is my favorite. When you approach this winery, you drive up a gravel road and get a full view of the tasting rooms, which look like old barns. You are promptly greeted by adorable cats which live on the property. After chatting with the staff, I learned that the owner of Puchta is a huge animal lover! When cats show up on his property, he spays them and they just live in on the winery. He also built him these cute little cat shelters they can go in at night. What a life! This place earned it's five stars not only for wine, but social responsibility. I love it. The winery also allows dogs on leashes, so we brought our chihuahua, Julian. Although he was scared of the cats, I think he enjoyed all of the grass, trees, and new smells. Puchta only charges $5.00 for tasting fees, but you are able to taste a bunch of wines. They also pair them with these dessert crackers. One wine pairs with a key lime cookie, making it taste like a margarita! Yum! My husband and I have very different wine tastes. He likes his so sweet it is basically hummingbird food, and I prefer more dry. We met in the middle with Adam's Choice, and I bought myself some little cheddar crackers. After we bought our wine, we sat out at a picnic table and enjoyed some live music. I think this place is great for a group. After trying so many wines, we couldn't finish the bottle we bought. I recommend pacing yourself, as the tasting portions are generous (never a problem in my book.)
google avatar

Beth J.

Yelp
We visited the winery. Live music great slushee and wine. The brisket and pork sandwiches were AMAZING! The pizza was good had fresh mushrooms, owners are super nice as well! It's a gem you should definitely visit.
google avatar

Dawn C.

Yelp
This would be 3 stars, but the wines I tasted were really great! That is why I go to wineries after all! We were among the first to sample their new "Cat's Meow" red, and it was fruity and complex with just the right amount of sweetness. Three stars because though it is a charming little location, it is missing those little "extra nice" touches that would make it more of a destination winery. It's also a bit awkard to spend time in the tasting room and then have to shuffle off to a separate store area to actually buy a bottle or two, it felt very disjointed. However, the staff was nice. There are cats wandering around. That can be a plus or a minus depending on how much you like cats, I think I spotted at least three.

Yelp
Adam Puchta winery usually lives in the shadows of the larger Stone Hill located in Hermann, Missouri. But all in all, Puchta has won a lot of very prestigious awards with their wonderful wines. If you ever make it out to the beautiful countryside in Mid-Missouri then Puchta is a must stop. My favorite wine I sampled was the Legacy, a semi-dry red with a beautiful fruity/spicy aftertaste. Give them a try and I promise you won't be disappointing. From KC I-70 east to Hwy. 19 south, Hermann/New Florence, 15 miles south to Hermann. Then its two miles southwest of Hermann off Hwy.100 west on Frene Creek Road. And if you can't make it out but want to try some check out the list at their website--!! Just go to the KC section...I usually pick some up at Gomer's on 39th-! http://www.adampuchtawine.com/shop/buyWine.htm
google avatar

Sabrina R.

Yelp
Disappointed. This has been a favorite last stop of the day on our group's annual trip to Hermann. Stopped today and were told that it is now $5 to enter, which includes 8 tasting samples. Half of our group does not even drink wine, a couple don't drink at all. We were told everyone has to pay regardless of whether they are tasting or not. That would have been fine if we were all going to taste the wine, but we are here for the camaraderie. We have been making this trip for over 20 years, so this was very disappointing. So instead of buying our usual 8+ cases for our group of 13 we left.

Tasha L.

Yelp
What a neat place, they had live music and friendly staff and my favorite wine of the day!! Make the time to visit this one!
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
Small winery with GREAT WINES! The outdoor seating and buildings need to be upgraded but the wines bring this up to the 4 star review!
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
LOVE. Going off the beaten path in wine country was totally worth it *ahem, see other Hermann reviews*. Everyone was so nice and the gal that did our tasting was so SO SOOO incredibly sweet, explaining every wine + pairing so meticulously. $70 and 4 bottles later...my boyfriend and I walked out a tiny bit happier [read: buzzed]. Thanks, Adam Puchta!
google avatar

Laruen M.

Yelp
If you want sugar water wine slushies then this is your place. Nothing but screaming girls and bros who I would not use the bathroom after. They cant even get their history right on the back of their wine bottles. Wine, bad, but I would not vomit it up. Too bad a woman died this weekend because of people leaving Adam Puchta.
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
Pros: cheap wine tasting, able to buy cheese and meat in store inside which was cute Cons: felt like I had to drink samples so fast and was being rushed, didn't like most of the wines - only one was the dry vignoles otherwise too sweet, impersonal tasting, felt like we were being herded around in cellar to get to tastings, grounds and buildings need to be updated
google avatar

Christine H.

Yelp
Absolutely the best wine selection in Missouri. The full range in dry to sweet, the full range in light to full bodied, and all of them are perfectly balanced and perfectly delightful. The staff are knowledgeable and can offer wonderful food pairing suggestions for each and every wine on their wine list. I love a good Norton - and the estate bottled Norton at this winery is perfection. I have shipped bottles to those that only drink CA or NY reds... and Adam Puchta Norton has become a favorite among them, as well. The environment is casual and friendly. It's a country winery, so it has lots of outdoor seating. There are fire pits and covered seating areas. The 1855 Bistro has a nice selection and the food was great!
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
We came during Ocktoberfest. They have a nice little pizza cellar on sure that makes STL style pizza. The highlight for me was their wine slushies. The weather was warm enough to really enjoy these and they had a guy playing top 40 songs with a country twang. Not usually my thing but it worked for them. The wine tastings are generous and the staff are all very nice.

Robert S.

Yelp
This used to be my favorite Hermann winery, but if you don't like sweet wines don't come here in October anymore. They used to offer the opportunity to taste just their dry wines, which always resulted in my purchasing a bottle and some snacks and spending some time enjoying their grounds - but no more.
google avatar

Trevor M.

Yelp
Cute little outdoor seating area, tasting room (8 tastes for $5), merchandise area, and cold drinks booth with a daily wine slush. Definitely not my kind of wine, but I f you like sweet wines, this could be the place for you.
