A Critic Praises Uptown’s Fine Dining Spot - Eater Chicago

"Adams Street Brewery, a rebrand of the Berghoff’s bar, retains the iconic restaurant’s charming experience. The lunch menu is the same as at the Berghoff and “dishes that succeed best at Adams Street are those that seem to have succeeded already for decades,” writes Graham Meyer. The bratwurst, served with sauerkraut on a pretzel bun, “exemplifie[s] a sausage lunch” while the Reuben is “unimpeachable.” Steak salad also offers “big hunks of steak stuffed into a modest and delicious salad.” Of the beers, the “smooth, strongly coffee-flavored” coffee milk stout and the rumbly dark dunkel are “standouts.”" - Jeffy Mai

Had an early dinner there around 3:30 on a Friday before the Metallica concert. I had a beyond the horizon beer it was pretty good and the Italian salad for my main dish. It was delightful! Very good and well played. Sean had the hot corner beef, it was good but kinda of plain might have needed some horse radish.

Google
Visiting from England I typed craft beers in the search and Adam’s was the closest, of we went. Cool bar, lots of selections on draught and good friendly staff.

One of the very few on-site breweries in Downtown Chicago. Nice selection of mostly German Brew styles with nice finger food. Cozy place. Definitely Recommended.

Google
German style brewery although it felt more generic tourist trap. The beers are decent, I've had better Vienna lagers. The pretzel while big wasn't great either. It was kind of soggy like they didn't cook it long/hot enough. I just had a couple of mostly standard beers. The Joose was a nice drinkable hazy. I came early so it was just a couple late lunchers, but I'm sure this place gets busy and loud.

Google
Great spot! Got the beer flight, pretzel, and stuffed mushrooms. Pretzel was great with yummy side sauces. The mushrooms were but undercooked, but very tasty. Great atmosphere and good service.

Google
Adams Street Brewery is a hidden gem in the Loop. Dropped about $25 on a pint of their Helles Lager and a brat with sauerkraut. The beer was crisp and refreshing, and the brat had that classic snap. The place has a laid-back vibe, perfect for unwinding after work. Service was friendly and quick. Definitely a spot I'll be returning to.

Yelp
Cozy brewery in the heart of the loop. Very large bar with in house beers makes this spot a hidden gem. Friendly wait staff and good prices for the beers :) Pro Tip: don't sleep on the root beer which is also brewed by Berghoff

Yelp
No complaints from me about Adams Street Brewery. The atmosphere is rich with heavy wood surfaces, well-preserved from centuries past. A little low volume music and this place is pretty peaceful Beers on tap and presumably brewed by the restaurant we're all satisfying. The pork chop was tasty and filling! Service warmed up after a few minutes and was friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This place was neat inside. The beer wasn't to my taste but we all built flights and appreciated a few of the pours. The place was packed due to Chicago Marathon weekend and it seemed like there was one server for a ton of tables. She did an awesome job running around trying to take all the orders and get food out. My friend got a grilled chicken salad that looked fabulous and she loved it. The rest of us got sandwiches and they were fine nothing super exciting. There were no fries just chips- kinda a hummer but we survived. The restaurant did graciously give runners of the marathon a $5 pretzel discount and the pretzel was yummy!

Yelp
Max loves German food and we were pleased to see this brewery attached to a German restaurant. Max was all in for a beer. I'm not a beer lover, but I did see root beer on the menu. They make their own. I'm not much of a carbonated drink lover, but I chugged that root beer like I was trying to win a contest at a frat party. It really quenched the thirst. Seating around the bar is plentiful, and they even have hooks under the bar top for your bag. We are coming back for dinner, we just aren't sure if it will be back at the bar, or maybe we will sit at a table.

Yelp
Great Beer. Great food, beautiful atmosphere. A lot of history will definitely be back.

Yelp
So, I'm not quite sure how it works between the Adams Street Brewery and The Berghoff Restaurant. They appear to be one in the same (more or less). I checked in under the brewery, so here we are. I found this to be a cozy spot in downtown Chicago to grab a few beers and a bite to eat. I thought they had a solid selection of craft beer. The food was also spot on. There is plenty of seating and the service wasn't bad. I'd come back.

Yelp
The less formal side of Berghoff. We stopped in for a quick lunch. I had the Cuban sandwich which was really great with their pork jus. My friend had a Ruben and said it was great. Service was friendly and knowledgeable. Gave us a rundown of who was in the portraits and good choices on the menu. I will come back on my next trip!

Yelp
The first time I was here was four years ago, and the second time was last week. I have to say, this is a great place with really delicious beer and tasty food to go with it. The furniture has an old-style design. You can also watch sports events here. Great bar

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch while holidays shopping and had the BEST experience! Santa was visiting tables, our food was super tasty (stuffed shrooms, chicken schnitzel, and potato pancakes) , and the service was fantastic! Our server, Susan, was perfectly attentive and friendly! The restaurant was packed with people and she was just on top of it with a constant smile- putting this place on our list as a regular stop- thanks Susan and Santa

Yelp
they don't come out to ask you anything for atleast 40 minutes. left before we even got anything, it was terrible experience. Do not recommend.

Yelp
Adams Street Brewery is both a pub and brewery. It's actually a part of The Berghoff Restaurant. Sit at the bar and you can get beer and order food too. Lots of their own beers and many guests. The food is rather uninteresting. It has a pretty long history in the area. Something that has even more history is the restaurant this is brewed in. The Berghoff is a classic and looks like it's been here a long time. Forget about the food. What's much better is what's on tap. I was sure to try a beer. Last time here it was a Helles Lager, a best seller. It's $7 for a pint. This is very clean looking and smooth. Also check out The Berghoff food menu. It basically is typical stuff at a pub. The food isn't all that impressive but the atmosphere is classic and you can find some pretty good things.

Yelp
Beer was fine. Nice building. The bartender was an absolute asshole. Super rude, thought he was being funny but nobody was enjoying. Kept telling folks he was a musician, but could not read the audience

Yelp
Sat at bar on a Thursday rush hour and had two apps...onion apple soup and potato pancakes (loaded up)...both very nice. Had a Czech style pils to wash down. Great live band, to boot!

Yelp
This brewery is huge on the inside! All the staff was welcoming and everyone was friendly. We decided to sit at the bar which was really nice. There are four or five beers always in tap and the rest rotate in or out. They also serve food in connection to the restaurant they are in business with (or own not sure). Any of the beers are a good choice. Had the pierogis to hold us over for a bit and they were absolutely delicious.

Yelp
This was a great brewery which we thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was really great and we enjoyed our time here chatting with the bartender. They had a huge variety of beers on tap. All in house brewed. They also had a full bar set up. We didn't eat here but enjoyed our time sampling different beers and chatting. Chicago is a great city!!

Yelp
Great ambiance, good food, lots of beer choices and friendly service. Location is good too.

Yelp
Lively place with an amazing beer/cocktail selection, plus full bar. We had a few drinks here before dining at the Berghoff, which is connected. There was an entertaining Oktoberfest duo performing and it was definitely a fun scene (we went toward the end of September.) Large bar/lounge area and friendly bartender. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Strolled into this place on a Saturday afternoon looking to grab a beer or two with an appetizer. Straight up, the cheese curds were very whatever, and the sauce that accompanies it was also meh. We had to ask for ranch since I feel like that is generally a better pairing. Did I also mention that the curds came out lukewarm, if not even almost on the cold side? It seemed like they had been sitting out for a while. Not a fan. I guess the pretzel that we ordered was a bit bette rain s it actually came out warm and fresher tasting. It was just okay though. The cheese sauce that came with it wasn't really anything to write home about, and the sweet Dijon mustard tasting dip was alright. I preferred the Dijon mustard that is at the table already for a pairing with these pretzels. Beers were good, and our server was nice, although we didn't really see her much. We had another person check on us, but overall our dining experience was meh here. I do love the architecture and historical value of this place. They did a great job keeping this place alive and together. Restoring old Chicago gems is important for the city. I guess I'd return again, but would definitely want to try their more well known entrees from the restaurant next door.

Yelp
What a beautiful and amazing place! We had some of the best Czech and Austrian beer accompanied by delicious Bavarian food. The highlight of the visit, thought, was our service. Our waitress, Susan, was so kind, helpful, and patient as we browsed the menu with our kids. She was attentive, friendly, helpful and fun. This was a true gem of a restaurant coupled with amazing Chicago hospitality courtesy of our server. Thank you, Adams Brewery, for a great time! It felt like home!

He Said She Said ..

Yelp
He Said: A quick stop on the way to the Art Institute of Chicago to see some Cezanne! This bar is super cool, with a ton of wood and a look that must be from the mid-20th century. We definitely enjoyed the beers and the snacks hit the spot. Excellent service on a quiet early Thursday afternoon. We didn't stay too long, but could tell we'd go back if we were nearby. She Said: Our server was very nice, patient, and efficient, and I wish I could remember his name. I enjoyed my beers, and the food was good enough... definitely a step above the standard options at some breweries/bars we've visited. Overall, I liked the vibe, the beers were clean and had good range, and I'm a definite fan of the service. Potty Points: 4/5 potty points. The bathroom was clean and available when I needed it. That's my standard for a rating of 4!

Yelp
Fine beers but I was lured in by Yelp Reviews stating $5 pints for happy hour. Those reviews were all pre-pandemic. No more happy hour specials at all.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
I like to check out local breweries whenever on the road and they have a dark beer. I got The Turbulator, a DoppelBock, but there's no way it in hell it has an 8.1 ABV. As we weren't really ready to eat, we did late afternoon appetizers My wife said their version of chicken noodle soup was really good. My stuffed mushrooms were inedible ... my wife, who loves them, even spit out the bite she took. REALLY NASTY. And while the server had nothing to do with the food, he could have at least acted like he wanted to be there. This place is a one-and-done for us, but when we finally eat tonight, we'll go back to Miller's!
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Venue: Architecture was cool. But it also felt a bit sterile. The service was slow and unremarkable. We didn't try the food but the beers can be skipped. We were sorely unimpressed. We also tried the Irish old fashioned which was fun and kitschy but don't need to have again? We we go back? Not really. Only if we had too
google avatar

Amy T.

Yelp
I don't know much about beer and definitely not an avid drinker, but thought the beers here were so easy to drink. Only came in for a flight to try out some of their beers, and thought it was decent. I feel like their beers are very similar in taste, nothing particularly outstanding about them. The place was quite large and good for parties. There is a bar for beers and other alcohol and lots of space for those who want food. I can't say much about their food because we only did a beer flight and no food. Good place to come for a drink with friends!
google avatar

Papillon E.

Yelp
The service and food was good. I was a nice meal and I would go again. The atmosphere was casual and good place to grab a quick lunch.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place after checking into our nearby hotel. Wish they had a wider selection of beer, but they have the basics like your hefs, ipas, and pale ales. What was nice was they serve German food from berghoff's next door. We ordered a Bavarian pretzel, mini brat and wurst, and a wiener schnitzel to go with our beer flights. The pretzel was my favorite; it was huge and soft. Our server was also really nice and attentive. I can see myself hanging out here if I worked/lived nearby.
google avatar

Amanda D.

Yelp
What a fun little bar! Attached to Berghoff's and definitely relished in the Oktoberfest season. Beer options were okay - they offered a stout, which I appreciated. Not the best stout I've had, but at least they tried. We stopped by for a nightcap, so we weren't here very long. We sat at the bar and were served right away. Bathrooms were clean and each staff person that we encountered was very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to visit again!
google avatar

Yelp
After seeing an Oktoberfest ad on Instagram, I had the most intense craving for a big German pretzel with beer, so we stumbled upon this place!! Adams street brewery is the left side bar attached to the berghoff restaurant! The inside is super cozy with the wooden interior, and there were some decorations on the ceiling for Oktoberfest! We went on a Friday night around 7pm and we had no trouble finding a table. The bar was pretty full but it's open seating so the servers come to you once youre seated. We started off with their $8 flight. I got the neon rhapsody, lager, flipping waffle, and milk stout. The neon rhapsody was a light ipa with clear grapefruit, pine, and floral notes. The lager was pretty basic, the flipping waffle had a warm after taste, and the milk stout was extremely creamy, almost foamy. For $8, it was really nice to be able to try different flavors in decent amounts and compare their tastes. Our server recommended the Dunkel and Hefeweizen so I knew I had to get those. I also wanted to try the more fruitt el simtennial and a milk stout. But I was pretty sad that they ran out of Dunkel and El Simtennial. For a friday evening, I didnt expect them to be out of stock of their most popular beers, especially ones a server would recommend.... For food, there was a berghoff restaurant menu on our table so we thought it was our only dining option. Seeing their website now, adams street brewery has their own menu for bites, so if youre looking for bites to compliment your beer rather than real restaurant food, i would recommend that instead. BUT WE DIDNT KNOW SO we got the Bavarian pretzel (ofc!!!) and mini brats. The pretzel is BIG and comes with a cold honey mustard plus warm beer cheddar sauce. I didnt really taste the cheddar in the sauce and I was a bit surprised to see that the honey mustard was unexpectedly cold in my mouth. The Mini Brat and Knockwurst was good too, really juicy and that distinct casing. I never had a German potato salad before, but I was kind of a fan of the sour kick! For $22 per person including tax and tip, it was a fun experience especially with the live music! Would recommend (esp if you ever have a sudden urge for a big fat pretzel)
google avatar

Enrique C.

Yelp
Honestly the beer isn't great even though they have a wide selection. I got a flight of a hazy IPA, regular IPA, grapefruit Pilsner, and the Oktoberfest. They weren't bad, they just weren't good either. The day we went there was a duo up on stage playing live music and they were playing all the hits. Sweet Caroline, country roads, van Morrison, etc. very sing-a-long worthy. The bartender was attentive. I was just really underwhelmed by the beer. Might be a good place for a large group to go hang out casually.
google avatar

Chad V.

Yelp
Nice bar with large, open seating at bar or high tops. Can fit groups if early enough. Plenty of tasty beers brewed in house. Attached to the Berghoff Restaurant so food readily available. Worth a stop.

Matt C.

Yelp
Fantastic little spot. Had the Sausage Trio with house made brat, knockwurst and thuringer with a warm German potato salad and sauerkraut. The liter of beer was great too! The new Bushwacker Pale Ale is well done as well

Dan S.

Yelp
Great place for food and drinks. Stopped in on our way to a concert. Good service and quality food.

Yelp
Excellent beer, food, and service for a reasonable price! I highly recommend to anyone in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
I've always been interested in coming to both the Berghoff but moreso, Adams Street Brewery. I loved the selection of beers available and look forward to coming back!
google avatar

Yelp
I was at Millenium Park I wanted to hit a brewery in Chicago, being a few blocks away we decided to check it out. It's a definite nice place to have a beer, they had a full-service bar so it was different than most breweries that I have been to, the bar had a classic feel and the dining area was very nice too. The bar staff were very helpful and pleasant. I did not stay long, just long enough to enjoy one beer and the atmosphere. It was once of the classier bars that I have been to. I recommend it if you are in the area and want a good craft beer.
google avatar

Aaron R.

Yelp
Me and my son happened to run into this baron accident. We were waiting around for an Alter Bridge concert at the Chicago Theater down the road and looked up bars and stopped in ! And glad we did ! Very nice brew selection . Started with a flight of 4 .Went with the pilsner, red,Weis & the dark. I actually enjoyed everyone of them ! Then happy hour started at 4 so we started on the pints for $5 Good deal.. we also had food which was also tasty. Had stuffed mushrooms for app, very good and the main burger which was tasty and big ! So we will come back again for sure
google avatar

Liz F.

Yelp
A pretty standard brewery experience - beer was ok, food was bar food (heavy), and staff were fine. Nothing exceptional but will hit the spot of you want a drink and some food.
google avatar

Yelp
Looking for a new craft beer spot in the Loop? Look no further than Adam's Street Brewery. This place is owned and operated by the historic Bergohoff restaurant. When I first heard they rebranded their bar area, my heart skipped several beats. Personally, I thought Chicago lost another city staple to a chainy gastropub. Fortunately, this wasn't the case...like at all. The interior and overall vibe is the same as it ever was; open and spacious yet comforting. They still host live music on a regular basis and have all of your favorite menu items ready to order (looking at you, giant pretzel with beer cheese). The only differences are a few new food options and a list of about 10 different craft beers for your choosing. They're all phenomenal. You even have the option to try a flight for $8...not bad for downtown Chicago! The pours are always generous and the service remains top notch. Adams Street Brewery has become a personal staple for happy hours, hopefully your work groups will feel the same.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
Adams Street is part of the historic Berghoff's Restaurant. They have been having their beer brewed by a contractor in Wisconsin for many years and have now come full circle, now brewing on site. If you like the the "taste" of their many offerings, this is the place for you. If you like watered down versions of your favorites, (Yuengling) even better! **UPDATE** Had Yuengling in Pennsylvania this week in bottles and on draft. Not as bad as I remember it, but still prefer more "ballsy" brews
google avatar

Heather B.

Yelp
Great place , nice service and beautiful building . Yummy beers and the stuffed mushrooms were very good
google avatar

Justin P.

Yelp
The food and drinks are less than stellar. The service was OK. My Drinks: Maybe it's my fault for ordering a cocktail in a brewery, but the tonic for my G&T was flat. It cost $10: open a new bottle. My food: I ordered the duck, which was cooked well. However, they dumped a ton of sweet, not-so-good sauce on top, which tasted like a fast food restaurant dipping sauce. My meal was served with carrots and asparagus . Both were undercooked and had the aforementioned sweet sauce dumped on top. Don't expect quality food matching the price or description. It was okay, but this is a burger and beer joint. My buddy also described his food as "alright." Don't expect much and you may not be disappointed.

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Devon was an absolute Gem. What a treat! Beer and food was wonderful. Will be back soon!
google avatar

Heiko S.

Yelp
Stopped in after visiting the Christkindle Market and very happy we did. The atmosphere is very welcoming and has a historic feel to it. Appetizers were all good, especially the spinach stuffed mushrooms and big pretzel. I had a flight and the Rauchbier (Cinder & Ash) was very good. Will definitely stop in again when we're in the Loop.
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Lately I've been stopping in for a beer at the bar, I'm so happy that you guys are open. I'm truly enjoying the beers you brew.
google avatar

Hector G.

Yelp
Great brewery with unique apps. Wow the potato pancake was amazing. Sweet and lovely. We ordered applesauce on the side but it was not necessary with the delicious toppings on the mini pancakes. The onion soup was killer but weird with the apple. I loved it. Awesome beer and wine selections both were reasonable.
google avatar

Dustin H.

Yelp
Great local brew in a historic setting. I had the Bavarian prerzel with a couple stouts and the mint seasonal brew. Great atmosphere and staff.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
The beer is subpar for a proclaimed brewery. If you want good beer with good service you're better off heading somewhere else in the loop.
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
I was disappointed that they only had their own brews on tap and that they only had one IPA. The pint was okay but not as spectacular as the description indicated. Since they only had one IPA to try, I decided to just have a burger and try somewhere else later. What a disappointment the burger was. I got the Berghoff burger with bacon, cheese and shoestring onions. I have never had such a tasteless burger in my life. Even the bourbon bbq sauce gave it no flavor. If I was only giving stars for the food, they would get zero, but the beer got them at least 2. Not worth the money, even if it was free, which it wasn't .
google avatar

Matt K.

Yelp
This is a great after work spot to spend time with coworkers or friends. It can be a bit crowded if you go on Thursday or Friday but is always worth it. The food comes from the adjacent Berghoff Restaurant and is quite good.
