Where to Eat Around Lake Minnetonka | Eater Twin Cities

"Adele’s frozen custard is even better than ice cream—the delightfully rich texture comes from egg yolks and the fact that air is whipped out (rather than added) during the custard-making process. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, and a couple of rotating selections from a catalog of over 80 flavors. In addition to custard, there’s a menu of deli sandwiches, hot dogs, and BBQ pork." - Stacy Brooks

Adele’s Frozen Custard in Minnesota is, without a doubt, the best custard in the nation. My family and I have been coming here since 1995, and it’s become a beloved tradition that we look forward to every summer. There’s just something about Adele’s that keeps us coming back — maybe it’s the friendly, welcoming staff who always greet you with a smile, or maybe it’s the generous portions that leave you feeling satisfied and happy. But really, it’s all about the custard. The custard at Adele’s is incredibly smooth, rich, and full of flavor. Every spoonful is creamy and perfectly balanced, without being overly sweet. It’s the kind of treat that’s so good it’s almost addictive — once you take a bite, you can’t stop. On a hot summer day, there’s nothing better than enjoying a cup or cone of Adele’s custard while sitting outside with friends or family. One tip: eat it fast, because that delicious custard melts quickly in the heat, and it can get a little messy (in the best way). Whether you’re a first-timer or a longtime fan, Adele’s is a must-visit for anyone who loves a good frozen treat.

Google
I’m from the east coast and still haven’t found a soft served ice cream place that I love… BUT!!! This is the next best thing I found! Not only was it delicious, but my “red white and blueberry” had real raspberries and blueberries in it! Pleasant surprise. Staff were very patient, friendly and helpful. Quick service. Aaaaand free water! Which feels silly to add— but! I went to get ice cream at Dairy Queen last week during the heat wave. I had asked for a cup of water with my order and they refused me and offered me a FOUR DOLLAR bottle of water instead. I was so upset i cancelled my order and went to Culvers lol. You can’t give me water? I can’t give you my money. Just robbery. It was over 90 degrees that day. Also DQ is expensive and isn’t even that good. Adele’s is very reasonably priced. So! It’s wonderful to see a local place not penny pinch you and offer a wonderful product and experience.

Google
Long-time customer of Adele’s. Unfortunately, customer service and sundae quality are never consistent. We frequently order the Truffle sundae (family favorite). However, the last time we ordered it came with whole frozen raspberries. If the shop is out of an item or ingredients aren’t ready, please let the customer know so they can pick a different sundae. I submitted a comment on the website and never received a reply.

Google
Small and wonderful place to spend time with kids and family. Custard is very tasty and highly recommend. Indoor seating is 10 max and outdoor have good space for 10+. You have drive in as well. Nice location and place - highly recommended

Google
Such a charming location and the custard is undeniably delicious! I could see how the parking lot might be a little frustrating if they’re super busy, but we got lucky and were able to snag an open spot. Everything we got was delicious and the staff were all super nice. They had a lot of people working so service was fast and no one seemed to be stressed. Looking forward to going back!

Google
Love this place!! I'm usually a Culver's Girly trough and through but since moving here from Wisconsin, Adele's is my go to for my Custard!! I suggest the Oreo mixer with vanilla custard, extra oreos and hot fudge. All the workers are on top of it and they really keep the lines moving! One time they messed up and order for us and they remade it and let us keep the mess up! Great for a sweet treat!

Google
Best custard in the area. Best dessert in the area. Pretty much just the best in the area. They sure do hook the kids up with memory making, dream inspiring cones. Great staff. Can’t beat it.

Google
Great little lunch spot in excelsior off the beaten path. The frozen custard is excellent. A heaping portion of candy in their mixers. Regular, sugar, and waffles cones. Sundaes, etc. this has become one of the best ice cream places in the SW cities area. Had the hot BBQ pork, it was good and large. The chili dog was also sizeable. They stay open until sometime in November, so don't waist time with Culver's or DQ, come here instead!

Yelp
I love ice cream and this place did not disappoint I got toffee almond ice cream with cookie dough and let me tell you they do not skimp on the cookie dough mine was piled high with it and it was delicious. I probably would get a different flavor though because toffee almond was a bit plain, however it did have real toffee pieces in it which was nice. The small size is also a pretty large amount so would totally recommend!

Yelp
We came really close to closing time, so this may have skewed my decision. Overall, they had very limited frozen custard options, but they had a ton of toppings - which was good. The servers were nice. I think you can either walk in or drive through it. Not a huge spot- so not a ton of seating inside or outside. Definitely pricier, but not as deserved in my opinion.
google avatar

Lydia C.

Yelp
My friends and I tried quite the variety here and everyone was satisfied! The cookie dough is excellent, and you definitely get what you pay for. It tastes like "real" cookie dough that you would buy from the store, not just the tiny morsels of "cookie dough" that you typically find elsewhere. You can actually taste the chocolate chips, and they add a nice texture as well. Definitely a cool spot to check out if you're nearby. All of the people working were kind and efficient; they even have a drive thru window! There is pretty limited indoor seating but a decent amount outside. It's the perfect Summer spot

Yelp
First time here! Huge deck in the front part of the building. Smaller space on the inside. I was confused at first with what to order but the worker was really helpful and guided me through ordering my ice cream. It was delicious and they give you loads of toppings!
google avatar

Matthew J.

Yelp
Some of the best frozen custard. They do not skimp on mix ins. Piling it high as a mountain on top of the cup. I swear I get a lb of PB Cups in a small concrete
google avatar

Robyn L.

Yelp
YUM! We love this place. They have a flavor of the day calendar that we usually plan our ice cream trips around. They are definitely the star of the show at Adele's. You can drive through or walk up. But they are FAST! A small is a big portion in my opinion so when I want a true small I order the kiddie size :)

Yelp
Adele's is a cute summertime treat spot! Adele's is an old house turned custard spot, with lots of great patio seating and a great crowd. Great ambiance! Parking lot is small and many signs limit parking to 1 hour. Drive through and the line inside is very fast - there's tons of employees who are scooping and taking orders. Adele's has two flavors of the day made every morning in addition to vanilla and chocolate. There are also shakes, mixers, and more! All of the custard is made in house and is delicious.
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
A great stop in excelsior to treat yourself. I'm not a huge soft serve person so giving it 4 stars but for the portion, the friendly staff, and many many options to choose from this is a hit! Perfect for any age - old and young!
google avatar

Kelsey D.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting Adele's and I will definitely return! I love getting Dole Whip's when I go to Disney World and they have the Pineapple Dole here! I got a scoop of the Pineapple with a scoop of their vanilla custard. We also got their special Red, White & Blueberry which was vanilla custard with raspberries and blueberries. The cost of 3 dishes came out to 14 dollars which is about normal for an ice cream shop. They were knowledgeable about their custard/dole being gluten free which I appreciated. Their service was quick and very friendly. They have a nice outdoor patio in the summer to enjoy along with a drive thru if you don't want to go in to order. Adele's does have a parking lot attached but it seemed pretty full when we were there.

Yelp
Drive thru for us- fast, and the custard was divine. One of our absolute favorites. Kids working the window were polite and our custard containers weren't sticky once they arrived. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Liz Z.

Yelp
Literally the best concretes! My favorite is chocolate with Reese's and cookie dough, they are so generous with the mix ins!
google avatar

Drew M.

Yelp
Our favorite place to go for dessert! One of the only places to still have butterscotch malts, which is a family favorite! Such a cute place right in Excelsior and the staff is always super pleasant and eager to serve us. And don't sleep on the pies...especially the pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving! it is to die for!
google avatar

Robbie R.

Yelp
Love this place so much! Easy drive through with options of either their standard concretes or their flavor of the day. Traditionally go with their oreo concrete which is as good as anywhere else I have had. Staff is fast and friendly and this place is a great summer treat. Check it out and support this local gem!!

Yelp
Best frozen custard I've ever had! It wasn't too sweet like others I've had before. They had quite a few options, I had the hot fudge sundae with banaa and my hubs had the banana split. The workers were all teens and they were super friendly and helpful. Parking spot is small because there is a drive thru (DRIVE THRU FOR FROZEN CUSTARD!! BRILLIANT!). Line went fast though. Wish we had this in the Bay Area. Wish we had better behaved teens with strong work ethic in the Bay Area. LOL! Cause these teens who work here would be a great example. You need to definitely head over to this spot. Great service and the best FROZEN CUSTARD!
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
The barbecue pork sandwich was pretty bad... very thin layer of meat. The bread was so stale it tasted like biting through styrofoam. Custard was pretty mediocre and just tasted like something you could get from Dairy Queen. Would not return unfortunately.

Yelp
Went to Adele's with my sister recently as a lot of locals recommended the area. They have a dine-in and drive through option; we chose the drive thru, but it's a little chaotic as the line often goes into the parking lot area. They have a lot of custard flavors but only had 5 available the day we went. My sister got the flavor of the day, which was caramel cashew, and I got pomegranate Dole whip. It was good; I was a little sad that they don't have a wide range of flavors available daily but I think it's worth a try and they give you a fairly large portion. The pomegranate Dole whip was okay; if I went back, I would definitely get a custard instead. Overall, not a bad spot if you're craving something cold and sweet on a hot day. Will try and see if I can get indoor seating the next time I go.

Yelp
Frozen Custard just may be my new favorite ice cream! It's THAT good! Definitely underrated - who knew frozen custard would be this tasty?! They have so many options, it was hard to narrow down what to get - however, I ended up settling on the Turtle. I replaced the nuts with their home made cookie dough and oh, it was so worth it. I've heard people rave about their cookie dough and the compliments are valid - it was perfect in every way. And they serve a lot of it ! Not only that, but the Vanilla custard on its own was just divine. Super creamy, softer than ice cream, but still rich and delicious. My husband got the apple caramel one and it legit tasted like apple pie. Apple pie in the summer. Yes, I'm sold! And I hope you are too. Best part of this custard place is that it's a drive thru - so all you do is drive past the window, order, and drive to the nearby lake to enjoy it. It was a nice little date watching the waves of the lake go by, the geese eye the custard, and the ducks with their little ducklings. Their menu was so large, I'm excited to try different flavor options for next time.

Kristen R.

Yelp
Adele's is amazing! The staff is super fun and friendly and I always leave with a big smile on my face. One of my favorite flavors is toffee but it's more of a limited edition flavor. If you see if on the daily menu, grab it because there's nothing like it. If you're feeling like more of a meal, you can't beat the pulled pork sandwich. Everyone leaves happy at Adele's.

Amanda N.

Yelp
My family LOVES Adele's! They have a daily flavor menu that we check often, and lately some favs have included pistachio, chocolate covered cherry and the classic cookie dough. If you are in the Excelsior area, make sure to visit and enjoy some yummy custard on the patio. We always leave happy with another favorite flavor :)
google avatar

Mitch A.

Yelp
Fantastic place to go on a warm summer night. Tons of different ice cream creations and two flavors of the day, every day. The cookie dough chunks on the vanilla concrete were enormous!

Barb H.

Yelp
Love majority of these ice creams but don't waste your calories on Toffee Coffee or Pirates Booty!!
google avatar

Whitnie O.

Yelp
Delicious!! I got the kids size brownie Sunday and it was soo good. Great flavor the brownie was soft just the way I like it. The shop is super cute and small. A few tables inside and more outside during the summer months. The drive threw was packed and made parking a little challenging but we made it in and out. My husband got the butter scotch malt. Also really good the flavors were on point nice and thick not to thin. Service was quick, friendly, and helpful with answering questions. Portions sizes are generous and I could not even finish mine and that was the kids size! Overall cute little spot and recommend for sure.
google avatar

Katie U.

Yelp
Went here a few times last summer. There is a small parking lot and the line is usually out the door. Once you get inside the service moves quickly and you have your ice cream in no time. There is plenty of space on the patio and sidewalk to enjoy your sweet treat. I'm a big fan of frozen custard ice cream so I pretty much like everything here. The cookie dough is legit and my husband always get the Reese's. The custard seems to be more creamy than most and it's worth the trip!

vivian y.

Yelp
I visited friends in MN this summer + had to make a stop here. It didn't disappoint. I'm a fan + hope to come back annually to get my fix on.

The GF Detective ..

Yelp
Ice cream tends to be an enjoyable Gluten free dessert most of the time, so as a Gluten free person, I was excited to have a sweet treat at Adele's. However when I visited Adele's in excelsior, I was extremely disappointed. I asked an employee if the chocolate ice cream was gluten free; a simple flavor, and to my surprise she responded no. So I asked, what do you have that is gluten free? She was able to come up with 3 flavors out of the many on the menu. One was vanilla and the other two were variations of dairy-free strawberry. What is it that Adele's are putting in flavors like Pineapple, Blueberry, and even regular strawberry that makes it not gluten free. I think even the regular customer should be concerned about what they are putting in their body when they eat at this establishment. Do better Adele's.

Yelp
First time here. There was a line for the drive thru but we decided to wait. It went pretty fast. I ordered the butterscotch custard with butterfinger topping. Delish! My friend had the waffle cone which help 3 scoops. She got vanilla and butterscotch with Heath topping. Very good! So happy I finally tried this place
google avatar

Teny A.

Yelp
The staff are great but the order line where people on foot stay within cars on a drive through line is not convenient nor safe, the pistachio flavor is nothing taste like pistachio, more taste like marsipan only couple of pieces of pistachio with green color, very disappointed and waste of money.
google avatar

Carrie H.

Yelp
Seasonal frozen custard. Yes. Too excited for a tin roof sundae to try any flavors, but it's worth repeat visits!

Erik N.

Yelp
It is hard to find frozen custard in Minnesota that is made somewhere other than Culver's or Freddy's. Luckily, there is Adele's. The staff is primarily teenagers and young adults, but the service from the young employees is exceptional. The custard was splendid. I highly recommend getting a sundae.
google avatar

Lorraine N.

Yelp
The cars were all the way out in the road and the wait was probably at least 30 minutes but it was worth it and they were moving everybody along. I decided after waiting that long I could use a little snack when I saw they were offering a pork sandwich special. Everything was wonderfully delicious and they served it with a smile.

Carrie H.

Yelp
I used to drive all the way out there just to get my mom a treat. It was my website favorite places to go.
google avatar

Yelp
We have had this place on our list for custard since we moved here.... about 29 years ago. My husband is NO stranger to custard.... he grew up in Milwaukee. He is a connoisseur.... and searches it out. He felt it was very average. The atmosphere is beautiful though. Very nice to sit outside. They have a drive thru also.
google avatar

Jesse E.

Yelp
What can I say.....it's the best you'll ever have in minnesota. Fight me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Stephen K.

Yelp
Have you ever eaten cookie dough ice cream and saved all the little chunks of cookie dough for last because you knew how little actual cookie dough there was and wanted to savor all of it? This is simply not a problem at Adele's! I have never had cookie dough ice cream where it felt like there was more cookie dough than there was more ice cream (or in this case custard), and it was mind-blowing! The cookie dough chunks are absolutely massive, taste freshly made, and nostalgically reminded me of my childhood to when I would purposely leave more unscooped cookie dough in the mixing bowl than on the baking pan to gourge myself in a no-ragrets sort-of-fashion. The custard itself was surprisingly similar to the heavenly gelato I've had in Italy in terms of a thicker and creamier consistency, and was an icing on the cake to the incredible cookie dough. This is without a doubt my new favorite ice cream place, and I will be back! TIP: Get more scoops of custard to get even more cookie dough, and there is free parking on the side of the little hole-in-the-wall ice cream shop. And be prepared, it is not uncommon to see every employee at Adele's wearing multiple articles of Vineyard Vines clothing.
google avatar

Grace S.

Yelp
They went above and beyond in helping see the ingredients for food sensitivity concerns. My friend can have the raspberry chocolate truffle custard. There are no sugar free stevia options like they do have at yogurt lab with just stevia in at least one of their flavors. I'd love one option that is for the health nut! Adele's is great for the old school ice cream parlor with fun and happy sugar-high place that must be worth the sugar crash for those who love to partake. They did have an unsweetened tea so I had two sugar free options between tea and water so I got the Peak brand unsweetened tea. Glad I could also come out with something with my friends who got the custard that passed their muster.
google avatar

Sue S.

Yelp
We stopped in and thought Adele's was a cute little custard shop. With lots of seating out on the patio and not so much seating inside, it's the type of place that you'd want to stop for a treat and either take your treat outside or take it home in your car. Speaking of cars, there's also a drive-through, so yay. Overall, we liked the custard. Rich, creamy, thick and delicious. They have one of those custard machines churning out custard behind the counter so you know the custard you are eating is fresh. I was also surprised to find a menu of sandwiches and other non-dessert options. Service was fine. Like most ice cream shops, largely teenagers. But proficient and friendly. I think my biggest complaint honestly was that for the money, we got almost no custard. We both ordered a turtle sundae, which came with lots of ooey gooey fudge and caramel, nuts and a generous helping of what I believe was homemade whipped cream. But the actual amount of custard in the sundae was almost non-existent. I'm not sure what it's like when you get just plain custard with no extras, but I couldn't help but think that the "scoops" in our two-scoop sundaes were pretty light. Maybe a fluke, maybe not. We'll have to try it again to know for sure I think. So three stars for now, with room for an upgrade.
google avatar

Sydney V.

Yelp
Always come back here when I'm home and it NEVER disappoints. No matter what combination of toppings I get I am always left feeling happy and giddy inside. This time I got a vanilla concrete with fudge, bananas, pb cups and cookie dough. My brother got plain cookie dough and my friend got cookie dough with raspberries and pecans. If you've never been you MUST get the cookie dough because it is God sent. Truly an amazing establishment with outstanding service every time.

B L.

Yelp
Prices now higher, still good. Been going to Adele's for about 25+ years. Its changed owners, prices are higher. And I still think its the best Frozen Custard. Especially like Chocolate Raspberry Truffle, special flavor offered a few times per month and always as a sundae. Also like pulled pork on bun or pita bread. Also, serves frozen yogurt. Both made on site. Can be very busy with longer lines when hot out.
google avatar

Lynne C.

Yelp
I originally posted a low scoring review for Adeles and was instantly contacted to give them another try. They were actually super sweet and it was super unexpected! I write a lot of reviews so for them to reach out really showed their character and how much they truly care about who they're serving. Long story short I went back with my future in-laws and had a milkshake instead (later learned its completely normal that they put the cookie dough on top & it's not normally mixed in...whoops.) but it was absolutely delicious! I'm still weirded out about the cookie dough thing, but will most likely stick to the shakes & Malts in the future!
google avatar

Nikki M.

Yelp
I mean, if you have kids in tow and the ice cream is for them, go for it. Kids have the palates of goats. They'll be fine. If you're looking for good ice cream... meh. Nice outside seating area / patio. (NO SEATING INSIDE FYI!) They have some food options (limited, I think, to fried stuff in baskets). Smells weird. Like a Dairy Queen that has extra sticky stuff all over. But cool if that's your thing?
google avatar

Kirk H.

Yelp
Definitely would recommend stopping here if you are in the neighborhood and looking for a yummy dessert. We stopped by here after a show at the nearby Old Log Theatre. Around 9:45 there was no line. Is it the best custard I've ever had? Probably not, but it IS good. The servers were nice, and the ambiance is very cute. This would be the perfect place to sit out on their porch on a warm spring/summer day and enjoy just about any treat. But I will say, the caramel apple sundae didn't do much for me. Just some granny smith apples on top of a caramel sundae. I'll try something else next time. Really liked their whipped cream though.
google avatar

Cameron B.

Yelp
I got a large chocolate ice cream concrete with coOkie dough and peanut putter cups. It was pretty flame, it I think I still prefer Culver's. Cool ambiance in a local business though.

Gab F.

Yelp
Best custard ever! Get the cookie dough toppings, you will not regret the amazingness!
google avatar

Paige R.

Yelp
Adele's has been my all time favorite ice cream/custard shop since I tried it almost 10 years ago! This custard shop has the BEST custard I've ever tasted. The toppings are piled high on these bad boys and dang you cannot go wrong with anything you choose here!! The prices are crazy cheap and the portions are super generous. I HIGHLY recommend the vanilla custard in a cup with cookie dough. The staff has always been friendly and professional which is impressive since the employees are highschoolers. The service is always fast and the line moves quickly. One of the best things about this custard shop is the monthly flavor menu. Everyday of the month has a featured flavor and the posted menu gives you the chance to schedule which days you want to stop by to grab your favorite flavor!! The menu is posted on their website and their instagram page @adelesfrozencustard I love this place so much! I just wish they weren't only open seasonly. Please make this place open year round!
google avatar

Lora B.

Yelp
I got the tin roof (hot fudge, caramel, peanuts) sundae with one of their flavors of the day - cookie dough ice cream! So delicious. This is a cute local spot in the Minnetonka area to grab some ice cream on a hot day. My only gripe is that the menu is really confusing, I think it needs some reformatting to make the choices easier! Otherwise, I enjoyed my ice cream and would come back again.
google avatar

Ellen M.

Yelp
Enjoyed this local favorite. Tonight I had the Snickers flavor, which was creamy and had a good amount of the candy bar mixed in. My son had the chocolate flavor with cookie dough bits on top.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
It was LOVE at first bite here! If you haven't been to Adele's in Excelsior I'm telling you....you've got to go soon. This little lakeside custard stand draws crowds most anytime of year but summer evenings usually mean non-stop customers. It's just that good! Dine in and sit on their charming outdoor patio (dog friendly too) or drive thru and take out. Yes! Take out through the drive thru window. I'm not sure I'd enjoy custard dripping on my lap in the front seat but know that it's available if you're short on time. Adele's has a long list of flavors but my favorite and "go to" is always chocolate. Staff here are always so engaging and friendly and really.... doesn't everyone have a craving for homemade frozen custard!
google avatar

Anne C.

Yelp
By far our favorite ice cream place. The custard is great and very good on the toppings to ice cream ratio. My husband says that he doesn't have to say extra extra Oreo like he does at DQ. Kids love the cones and new flavors. They are also very accommodating w our peanut allergy child. Never been disappointed!!
google avatar

Chandler C.

Yelp
Always a favorite. My parents have a boat on minntonka and we have been stopping at Adele's for lunch and ice cream for years. It's a family run little joint, with a drive through. The line through the drive through will usually be quite long but will go by fast. It's pretty much just high schoolers that work there during the summer, but I wouldnt say that is a disadvantage because I think it keeps Adele's young, and lively.
