The Best Bakeries in New Orleans For Pastries, Desserts, and Bread | Eater New Orleans

"“The pride of Gentilly” — that’s this straightforward, family-run bakery founded by Adrian Darby and his wife decades ago. It’s perhaps most loved for Darby’s praline pound cake, cinnamon rolls, and traditional king cake, but special treats like petit fours and cupcakes also draw folks from far and wide. Most of all, it’s an enduring comfort in an ever-changing city." - Eater Staff

Ordered my wedding cake & grooms cake from here. Cake was scheduled to be delivered to the venue between 12-2pm window. I received a call at 1pm from the bakery asking about a picture I sent when I ordered the cake 3 months prior and questions about the layers. It sent me (the bride in panic mode). Fast forward, I get to the venue just before my wedding start, the cakes are not there. I called, no answer. Venue coordinator called - they answer and advised coordinator they are 15 minutes out. The cake was delivered 5 minutes before the start of the wedding. Top two layers were nothing like what I ordered. It was plain Jane! They pretty much did what they wanted to do. I’m happy I had a cake before the reception started; however, the service and what I received was unacceptable because it’s not what I paid for. I would not recommend nor would I order from them again!

Google
This bakery is so close to my house and I try to avoid it in order to save the width of my back lol. But the king cake is so good, it reminds me of a mckenzies king cake but it is on the pricier side. I think I paid $33 for this king cake which is a bit much. The bread is so soft and I could just eat it all day long. The praline cupcakes are really good too

Google
I was just driving by & wanted something sweet so I ran in… I’m so glad I did! I got a little spice cake tart that had AMAZING icing on top. Absolutely delicious! I’ll be finding more excuses to come back. This might be my new favorite bakery! 🩵 very reasonably priced as well!

Google
I received a King Cake as a mystery surprise, I'm still trying to figure out who sent it. Amazing, fresh, and taste wonderful. Highly recommend this bakery. Thank you

Google
I'd usually get the donuts from a gas station and finally found out this was the bakery. These are the best donuts I've had by far in the city . And the milk drops were amazing ! Definitely worth the trip !

Google
Terrible the whole point of going to a bakery is to get FRESH baked good! This is stale and hard what a waste of money! King cake says baked daily that’s also a lie! It was soggy like it’s been in that bag forever they will never get another penny of my money!

Google
My favorite bakery in New Orleans. Whenever I come back home this the only bakery I go to in the city. I mainly go for the cinnamon rolls cause they are so good & for Mardi Gras the King Cakes are really good too. Every time I’ve been whatever I bought it was good no complaints but the only thing I would be cautious about is ordering online & having it delivered to your house cause sometimes it may get smushed or the icing may smear depending on what you order.

Google
Made an order through Shari’s Berries for Valentine’s Day which had the MISFORTUNE of being dispatched through this joke of an establishment. Was depending on this delivery service for my out of town best friend, and they were extremely rude to her. They never attempted to contact her prior to delivery, they just showed up and she told them through her ring camera to leave them there and they did not. Then when she called them and asked for the redelivery, which was stated on the website, they told her No and that she needed to come pick them up…? Why would I pay a ridiculous amount for some overhyped strawberries to be delivered and they refuse to deliver them? Bye. 12/10 do NOT recommend doing business with these twits.

Yelp
So I've been meaning to complete this review and after having this bakery for the 2nd time I decided the time is now! My first experience is what made me order again. The first time I ordered a chocolate doberge square and a family size almond pound cake. The chocolate doberge was perfectly moist and I could taste that it was freshly made. The almond pound cake had a very subtle almond flavor and it was very moist. The icing was light and the thin sliced almonds were a great balance and added a nice texture. Unfortunately my second experience wasn't so great. I ordered a lemon doberge square and a chocolate doberge square. Both were not fresh and I think bc they sat for a while they both had a slightly stale alcohol aftertaste. The praline cupcake left much to be desired. The cupcake was a bit dry and the praline topping taste more like a light caramel flavor.

Yelp
It's a neighborhood business. Easy parking. Friendly customer service. Cozy little bakery. But it's over priced. And nothing in the store has a price tag or signage..nothing! I think the staff makes up prices as they go. I spent almost $30 for a medium size traditional king cake and a donut. The lady in-front of me paid $62 for her king cake and a loaf of bread. She grunted all the way out the door. Anyway, the king cake was just ok, the bag was sweating on the inside. Which made the cake a little wet in parts. Oh well.

Ann V.

Yelp
I love cake and king cake . Smell so good and taste amazing and fresh. Please come over there for the pastry.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent customer service! the freshest King Cake and the most delicious king cake. Omg, not to mention the lightest, tastiest buttermilk drops! So freaking delicious!

Yelp
Smells delicious- best donuts and other sweets. Out of sweet potato pie today, but I bet it's good!!!!

Yelp
Best king cakes!! Wonderful service, fresh selection daily. My go to spot for a king cake and anything sweet!

Yelp
I only gave it 1 star to move to the next part of the review. This is the first time I purchased a King Cake, and I am extremely disappointed. I saw this bakery on the news and wanted to give it a try. I am no expert, but I am sure for 33.00 for a 2lb cake, my expectation of more than a squirter of fruit filling is not unreasonable. I am from NJ, and I know sweet bread when I taste it. I certainly would not agree to pay $33.00 for a mouthful of disappointment. Adrian should be disgraced to produce sweet bread with a hint of lemon and strawberry fillings covered with colored sugar and not enough icing to make the rouse believable. To think I made 2 trips from Slidell for this product was a total letdown. Instead of King Cake, they probably should rename this product Duke Muffins because it was certainly NOT FIT FOR A KING.

Yelp
First time shame on YOU, second time shame on ME. When I say TERRIBLE and NOT FRESH I mean it. The first time i actually had a WHOLE praline pound cake delivered via Uber Eats. Imagine the disappointment when i cut in to a COMPLETELY stale cake that i OBVIOUSLY over paid for to have delivered. Today we decided to give them another shot while passing in the area. It's been more than a year at this point. To only get home and cut into the pound cake loaf and to basically experience the same thing. So not only did the price seem to increase, but upon calling i was told that out of the TWO items I purchased she was clueless as to when one was put out..... and that the other was put on FRIDAY!!!!!!! Yes, FRIDAY! Today it's TUESDAY!!!!!!! It's now closer to Friday AGAIN than it is to previous Friday. FOR A BAKED GOOD! From a BAKERY, not a grocery store. People sale day old donuts at a cheaper price because the QUALITY decreases after that first day. WHYyyyyy would we want to buy WHOLE CAKES at approaching a week later. I'm MORE THAN DONE with Adrian's Bakery. Not ME; Not AGAIN! Unfortunately this is NOT THE FIRST TIME!

Yelp
When I visit New Orleans, I always find my way to Adrian's. My father would always surprise me with praline-covered cupcakes, so now I go and get them on my own. They also sell donuts, petit fours, cakes and cake slices, and other bakery items. For the most part, the cupcakes are moist and tasty. I can see they recently upgraded the building. Selling ice cream now.

Yelp
I don't know why I continue to patronize this place. We've purchased this praline pound cake on several occasions, and it's typically good. On yesterday, however, it was not. I called around 3:30pm to let them know that it didn't taste fresh, was dry, and the frosting was soft, instead of crispy, and had a strong, winy smell. I was forced to leave a voicemail. I was hoping someone would return my call, but, of course, they did not. The customer service is sorely lacking, and, quite frankly, has never really been good. Disappointed once again.

Yelp
Every year I wait, very impatiently I might add for King Cake season. I don't frequent Adrians any other time other than King Cake time ! They have one of the tastiest cakes around. I've never had a stale one or any other type of issue with one. They've all been fresh and consistent with flavor, toppings and fillings.
google avatar

Jonie M.

Yelp
Great place to get your baking goods!!!! I love it there. This is the only bakery I go to for my baking needs.

Tim M.

Yelp
For the first time we ordered King Cake for delivery to California. We are very pleased with our Adrian's Bakery experience! The cake arrived fresh and the strawberry and cream cheese filling was fantastic! The web site (at least from what I could tell) only allowed me to choose 1 filling. I added a comment to the order requesting cream cheese in addition to strawberry. Even though I didn't get a response back, they fulfilled the request. As I'm sure happens with shipping cross country on items like this (handling, weather, etc.), the frosting and sugar combined so it wasn't quite as "pretty" as picking it up from the bakery. This would not impact our decision to order from them again next year - which I definitely plan on doing! Unless we can visit them in person

Elle P.

Yelp
Adrian's took no responsibility for this disaster of a cake. When I contacted them to discuss the issue, not only were they dismissive of the horrible cake, THEY were offended because I said that the cake looked like someone was under the influence when the message was written on the cake. No accountability and no acknowledgement of the cake appearance. In short, I was told that because the cake was purchased from the case, the cashier wrote on it, but had an order been placed in advance, the cake decorator would have written on it. So, if a person new to the area, walks into the bakery to try something from the case, they should expect poor service because an order wasn't placed in advanced? When I showed the pics of the cake, 60% of my friends thought that the kids made me a cake, the others thought I distorted the image of the cake. Just admit that it was wrong!

Yelp
I usually don't get in to the yearly "overrated cinnamon roll" debate, but I decided to buy one for a friend visiting for his birthday. I live a mile away and had not heard of this place. I picked up an apple cream cheese yesterday and I must say, this one of my favorite king cakes in the city!!
google avatar

Yelp
2 stars because of the pastries quality. The cinnamon rolls and praline everything are amazing. Le sigh* I really try to make an effort and spend my dollars with quality black owned businesses, however, they're becoming more and more scarce by the minute. Recent experience over this past week: a friend goes in for an item that is not visibly available ( I say this bc some times we get a courteous worker willing to check the back inventory) and is disregarded by the annoyed female worker in the middle of her conversation. Ok, cool. This situation alone has caused us to frequent Antoine's. Fast forward to today, we go in looking for the same item, ask a male worker and are told to come back in 30 min-great! That's how you fulfill a doable request. You don't dismiss the same customers you charge to stay in business. I hate feeling like I'm doing them a favor, especially black owner because we should know better, do better, and treat each other better. So we walk back up around 2pm, they close at "3pm", and the female worker proceeds to turn the lights off. At the same time we pull in the door-I can't make this up. Our sale could've been a profitable one but because customer service is done with it doesn't matter.

Yelp
I'm from Los Angeles and I was visiting New Orleans. My cousin ordered a birthday cake from Adrian's and I picked it up for her. When I got in the store, I was amazed at all the great desserts! The person serving me was super helpful; I ended up buying $40 worth of other desserts! I would have spent a lot more, but the prices were so low I could only put so much in the car! I am planning another trip to New Orleans and Adrian's Bakery will definitely be my first stop! My wife is still raving about the praline pound cake. Nothing like that in LA!
google avatar

Bryoni P.

Yelp
Great baked goods, horrible customer service. Order was not filled and forgotten, attempted twice to speak with management, and still haven't received a call back. Communication goes a long way in businesses, and I hate that I have to find a new favorite bakery.

Yelp
RUDE and the online posted hours are inaccurate. I checked Yelp and their website for the business hours and when I arrived an hour before scheduled closing, the guy was locking the door. I asked him if I could make a purchase, and he pointed to the sign on the door and said they were closed. I said, "I came all the way from across town based on the hours posted on YOUR website and Yelp. You need to update those sites." He rolled his eyes at me and closed the door.

Yelp
How does this place never have ice on Saturday mornings? Cashier is either rude or not properly trained. The chocolate donuts are figuratively a dime a dozen. Today was first day they didn't run out. On a positive note (OAPN) the cakes are some of the best. The raspberry filled donuts are also really good. (OANN) You can't operate alone on a quality product Adrians. Customer Service is essential. We will travel to the next neighborhood for the next big thing if you don't straighten up. Just reviewin!!!

Yelp
We went to this place on a recommendation. While past reviews commented on the service, our experience was good. The young lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. We got plain frosted king cakes, a praline loaf, doughnuts and coffee. All were delicious. The praline loaf had moist, structured cake with a yummy praline icing. The king cake was moist, flavorful and beautifully decorated. The doughnuts were yummy. The store could use some love, but take your goodies to go and enjoy!

Matthew H.

Yelp
The desserts was amazing. The guy in there was very helpful. When ever we come back to New Orleans we will definitely be stopping back by.

Almira J.

Yelp
Best King Cakes ever ‼ butter milk drops are delicious as well everything's good basically l drive from Houston to New Orleans every year to purchase king cakes just to high to ship them....

Rachel S.

Yelp
i am appalled! i have never in my entire life been so disrespected by an employee! the female who i spoke to is so ghetto, ignorant, and low class it was unbelievable! also, she stated that she was the owner! i wanted to explain to her that what i purchased was not good; stale! immediately became very irate and started asking me "what color petitfours did i get?" this is irrelevant, as no customers should ever receive stale goods! she was so unprofessional that she called my cell phone back to continue arguing! never, ever will i patronize adrian's bakery never; ever again! #stalegoods #badservice if i could them a negative zero i would!!!

Yelp
We've been using Adrians for my children's parties for the last 4 years. The last year the quality & service has gone significantly downhill. Last fall, there was a power outage and my daughters cake wasn't ready. Okay no problem, they rushed my daughters cake order and the cake looked okay- but wasn't exactly what we asked for, plus it put a strain on making her party on time due to having to wait for the cake to be finished. I figured no one has control over a power outage and gave them another chance. My sons first birthday cake came w a free smash (I was told this when I ordered) when my husband went to pick up the cake there was no smash cake and they had no record of my order. My cake was done but they said they had no ticket. I went back in tears because no one answered the phone and they rush made a smash cake and delivered it to my house. I thought okay things happen. Today. My daughters 6 birthday. She had a v specific vision in mind. She printed the cake picture off and we brought it in a month ago. They instructed me to bring the dolls on Thursday to drop off so they could put on. We go to pick up the cake. It isn't ready. We come back 45 minutes later. The cake is done but the dolls haven't been out on and many pieces of the fondant are missing. It doesn't look like the picture. They hand me back the dolls and I'm like alright I'll do it myself. I pre paid $95 for a cake that looked like crap that I had to complete work on myself. It's the last time I will ever use their bakery. It's sad because I go out of my way to Support local black owned family businesses and this makes me second guess my choices. Do better.
google avatar

Patrick T.

Yelp
I went to support this black business a little while ago. Their hours clearly state that they close at 6pm. I walk up at 5:15pm and they locked the door in my face. No kind of explanation. They wouldn't even hear that their hours clearly state 6pm. I will not be returning their anytime soon nor will I send anyone there. I was very disappointed.

Teneha B.

Yelp
1st downfall, although its name is on the marquis, the storefront lacks proper signage to identify it. So in the vast parking lot that is shared by other retail establishments it's a bit unsettling trying to find the bakery. 2nd downfall, once I locate it, I amble inside & as expected, 1st impression, it has the look & smell of a bakery, cool beans. But as I near the register, I am disappointed to see the cashier entertaining & holding a small child, while she neglected to address my needs. A 2nd young lady walks up & assists me with my selection (sugar free king cake). I must shamefully admit although the appearance of the cake was less than desirable, I purchased it anyway, looks can be deceiving & because my granny so desired. But as I exited, I knew this was my last time there, sugar free king cake or not. Oh btw, granny says the sugar free king cake wasn't all that great; I'm not surprised.

Lynn S.

Yelp
Fantastic King Cake? I sent one to everyone in my family living away from home and they LOVED it!! So nice that they provide shipping too! I'll be doing this again next year if they aren't able to come and we'll be going back for more. VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER LS

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Went in the this morning to get a King Cake for the office. They had various sizes and types displayed, I selected a large King Cake and waited to checkout the lady at the counter was courtesy and even apologized for my wait (they only had 2 customers in front of me). The King was moist and fresh and reasonably priced. I would go back again, too it is super convenient to my home.
google avatar

Francis S.

Yelp
I dearly want to support small, local businesses, but if the product provided is subpar... how can we? Ordered some baked goods for delivery to a birthday party. Cut in to the first cake and could tell already it was not fresh. Tried the second cake and it was so dry, brittle, and flavorless we decided to throw out the entire order (and we NEVER waste food - but this was inedible). Seems to be no pride taken here.
google avatar

Dianne H.

Yelp
Horrible service. Cakes never done. They lose orders . Never ever again. Doesn't even apologize.

Scottie H.

Yelp
My daughter and I ordered a cake for my wife's upcoming birthday celebration and we picked one that they had displayed on their Instagram page that was topped with metallic colored macaroons ,made with yellow cake and filled with strawberry filling. We paid twice the normal price for this size cake in order to have it done the way my wife likes it. Well what we got on the day of the event was, white cake with no filling at all and no macaroons at all. The bakery is an absolute disgrace and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone at all !!!
google avatar

Whitney S.

Yelp
I don't care if the pastries are good. The customer service is awful. I walked in and the man on the phone greeted me happily. Then I patiently waited my turn and when the customer was done, I didn't know if the gal was going to offer me help. Then someone walked in and she moved any attention she had to her. Then I asked some questions and the gal rolled her eyes as I asked some simple questions. After she checked me out, she said she was tired (not directed to me but just out loud). I want to shop local and in my own community but no way will I give money to a business that has the worst customer service.
google avatar

Anne D.

Yelp
Great prices. Exactly what I wanted. I've ordered cakes for my daughter for her first birthday & her second. I will definitely order from them again. The cake was delicious!!
google avatar

Christopher W.

Yelp
Adrian's King Cakes have really fallen off this year. The product seems rushed, illformed and and thrown together. They used to be one of my favorites but has fallen out of the running completely and as always, bad service.
google avatar

Maria O.

Yelp
Mom and pop bakery in a nondescript and unexciting stripmall. This place was a really amazing surprise find on my last NOLA trip. I stayed in a rented room just up the way and on my walk over to the bus stop I stopped in for a cup of coffee and a muffin. It ain't necessarily a breakfast type stop, but I was super happy to have a slice of their rich, moist, and delectable praline cake. While it was a bit sweet - it didn't seem overkill, it actually tasted perfect. Highly recommend you drop by for one of their baked goodies. Seriously this might end up a destination place for me! It was obvious to me that locals in the know head here, as quite a few folks dropped in to pick up or order cakes, not just for birthdays, but it seems for simple family occasions - like company going over! One lady said her family had gone there for years. Not gonna win any points for congeniality if you're new, it's a down home bakeshop so I'd say it's fairly no-nonsense. However if they get to know you, it seems you're like fam.
google avatar

Angela M.

Yelp
I only go for the cinnamon rolls! They are EVERYTHING!!!!! It's a 20 minute drive from where I live but well worth it. There are 8 glazed soft cinnamon rolls in a package. Glaze to roll distribution is adequate! They are packaged in a clear plastic bag... so you see what you are buying and you choose which package you want. I will try the praline cake the next time I'm there.

Princess W.

Yelp
My friend invited me to her birthday dinner and I was not able to get a piece of the cake age got from this place because it was too small and she asked for a cake that would feed 22 or more. Unacceptable!
google avatar

Heather W.

Yelp
The very BEST Praline Cake I've ever had!!! I shared this cake with about ten friends and coworkers and every single person raved and some tried to beg for more.
google avatar

Yelp
King Cakes reminds me of McKenzie's. Staff is always friendly. Small family business doing it right for a long time. $

Yelp
What's not to love about this bakery? You walk in and it smells absolutely heavenly. All buttery sugary goodness and it's just glorious. I checked out the reviews and saw lots and lots and lots about the poor customer service. I personally didn't experience this, but I will say that I found the customer service to be quite matter of fact. Dry even. Serviceable, but yeah, it's not all warm and fuzzy, which is at odds with how good the smells make you want to behave. So be warned. You aren't going to be greeted with unicorns and rainbows here! However, you will walk out with some delicious treats. And that my friends, is what keeps me going back. The king cake thing here is real. Over the course of Mardi Gras me and my pal devoured three, yes, three king cakes in less than a week. He's a pig, I'm a pig, late night frolicking, early morning coffee...king cake gave us life. And the praline king cake from here....heavenly. The cake part was cinnamonny goodness, and the praline topping (while diabetic coma inducing) was amazing. Last year we devoured a cream cheese cake and proudly served them under our tent during the Zulu parade. Definitely a win. When my friends wanted me to bring king cakes back, this was where I stopped before getting on the plane. And it's not just a king cake spot, oh no! Adrian's makes amazing cupcakes, donuts, buttermilk drops and they had some gorgeous chocolate covered strawberries for Valentine's day. I'm a fan.
google avatar

Timothy M.

Yelp
Love the king cakes here, but $20 for a medium is no fun! . They have all flavor fillings and even a supreme King cakes with all fillings in my cake.

Alexis K.

Yelp
Adrian's Bakery has given themselves a facelift! In my previous experience the customer service was horrible. I haven't seen the lady who was extremely rude during my time supporting this business so the owners must have caught on. Not only does the shop look extremely amazing the product quality has also significantly increased. The cinnamon rolls are to die for. I have also grown to live their turtles.

M J.

Yelp
We visited to buy a King Cake but wanted to try the donuts as well. Donuts were dry and stale. Visited Feb 7 at 8 am

Yelp
Do not order anything online from them. I ordered two items from them and paid $20.00 worth of shipping. When I checked my credit card statement after not receiving any of the items after the initial order over 4 days ago I noticed that they illegally overcharged my credit card an additional 20 dollars for the shipping of a second item because they didn't have the correct box to ship the two items in together. To make matters worst one of the items had never even left the bakery after 4 days. I also had to cancel my credit card because there was an unknown charge on the card the day I made a purchase from Adrians. I believe someone who works in the bakery got access to my credit card information and was attempting to use it to my online purchases. The customer service is also awful. Starting with Adrien himself. It took me over an hour worth of calling the bakery back and being put on hold repeatedly to get the problem somewhat fixed.

Celita W.

Yelp
I phoned on sunday before mardi gras and ordered 2 cakes. the person i spoke to on the phone took the order along with my name and I it spelled it for her and phone number. How come when i arrived the next day I was asked who did i speak to and of course the bakery knew who took the order because i was told that they sold the cakes because she did not put a name on them. if you know this employee cannot write or take phone orders properly why is she answering the phone. also the place needs a good mopping and dusting. the floors are horrible and there is grit on the donut case.. I have been torturing myself going to this place for years.no more

Yelp
This is the nastiest looking bakery I have ever seen! There is NO CUSTOMER SERVICE in this "establishment" if that's what they call themselves! No one wants to do their job. No one greets you when you walk in. . . You just stand there aimlessly for minutes until someone feels like coming to the front. I ordered a simple butter cream cake and they even fucked that up, because no one there cares about what they are doing! 1st the cake was not done on time! Then it was done wrong! When I went back to have it re-done the stupid girl at counter gives me attitude to having come back! I returned the following day to pick up the cake as i was told to do and there was no cake. No message about the cake. Nothing! Then the old platinum haired bulldagger-looking grandmother tries to check me for being upset!!!! I will NEVER shop here again and will adamantly persuade my friends and family to avoid this ghetto trash heap in Gentilly!!

Kiana C.

Yelp
Customer Service is very unprofessional, I set up a wedding cake tasting over the phone when I got there they had no recollection of my appointment, so I said okay I'll give it another chance made another appointment and had the same thing happen, they completely forgot. Then the worker put together some display of one type of cake and some jelly fillings, SO UNPROFESSIONAL then had the nerve to charge me, never going back!!!!!

Almalita W.

Yelp
This bakery is by far, the worst that I've ever done business with. I ordered a custom birthday cake for my daughter's 17th birthday. Where do I begin? They made me get the # 17 cake topper myself, they got the colors and the cake flavor wrong. How can you confuse almond cake flavor with chocolate cake? ...Then the girl who baked and decorated the cake has an attitude because I demanded my money back. Her and her mother's customer service etiquette was terrible. My advice to them would be to stick to trying to improve making donuts and cookies and leave the real baking to the big Dawgs..... Utterly ridiculous...
