Afghan Kabob House

Afghan Kabob House in Downey is little but pack a punch in flavor. Their food tastes so good, fresh, and flavorful . Their sauces are authentic and hit the spot. The Qabuli rice is amazing. Went home fully satisfied. If you’re craving for some good kabob/kobideh this is the place to go!

The food is beautifully prepared. Small selection of homemade dishes, unique and delicious. Simple yet very tasty! World highly recommend trying.

Delicious food, clean place , reasonable prices and great customer service

Finally I got to try this little afghan gem. We decided to sit on the traditional bedstyle seats in the back. We got the qabali polo, kabob and other dishes along with the homemade doogh as the drink. Everything was delicious and will be back.

We enjoyed our meal here! Came here during the soft opening phase and we basically ordered the entire menu. It's a smaller seating space with the back area being a traditional seating area sitting on pillows. Small parking lot available. Downey was a central location for our group to meet coming from Pasadena, West LA, and Hacienda Heights and we were excited to find this spot on Yelp, trying halal Afghan food for the first time which has similarities to other cuisines. Dishes I would order again: + Afghani Salad - refreshing and a great start to the meal + Bolani - I preferred this over naan to have some extra flavor and I liked the mash potatoes texture here + Karahi (Beef) - like a beef stew, really flavorful, tender beef, slightly on the oiler side so the rice is a perfect accompaniment! We also got the Afghani Yogurt Drink which is a savory drink! It's similar to a lassi but savory and has chunks of cucumber. Reminds me of a cold soup even. Really interesting an dunique to try for the first time! Loved being able to try Afghani food for the first time here!

What a find!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This little place is hidden in a strip mall and has very plain, unassuming decor. From the outside it looks like an old fast casual restaurant or an old hole in the wall. Inside it is austere but they do have a really cool traditional low to the ground Afghan seating area with rugs. I am not sure if you have to reserve this section or can just request it. The server seemed to be part owner and he was soooo friendly. He explained the menu items and made suggestions and talked to us about Afghani culture. We were the only customers in the restaurant. It was a Sunday night about 7:15 pm. The food was totally authentic, made from scratch as we waited for it and it was absolutely delicious. It took quite a long time for the food to arrive because nothing is made ahead. It was so worth the wait. We had the Afghan salad (so fresh and so tasty), as well as the lamb Karahi, the eggplant and the lamb kabob and Firni ( a dessert they gifted to us). We were 3 people and we ate until we were stuffed and still had leftovers to take home. Portions were big! We asked for extremely mild or no spice but unfortunately the Lamb Karahi was beyond spicy so we had to douse it heavily with yogurt but the flavor was fantastic. It was too spicy for me unfortunately. If that was mild heat I can't imagine what a high spice level would be like. The eggplant may have been the best I have ever had. The menu said it was fried (which I wasn't crazy about) but when it came out it was not fried at all. It was sauteed with no breading or deep frying. It was melted in your mouth and had a mind blowing sauce. The lamb kabob was so tender and delicious and they served it with home made Afghan bread which was amazing. As we were eating our server appeared with a complimentary dessert which was so interesting and hard to explain. It was cool and refreshing and seasoned with fresh cardamon and had a milkish base and it was delicious. The server said it is the only dessert they have. Unfortunately we don't live in the area so we probably won't be back soon but if we did, we would go every week. This is a must go place. Do not be put off by its outside and sterile inside. My only complaints are: There was no toilet paper in the bathroom and it wasn't overly clean. The Karahi was way too spicy when we asked for no heat. Its not near my house :) !

Wow, I went in with low expectations and was blown away by the food, quality and service. I'm so happy, we finally have some legitimate Afghan food accessible to us in LA. We ordered the chapli kabob with naan, bolani, boorani banjan, afghan yogurt drink and the dessert that's is similar to rice pudding (can't remember the name). Everything was 10/10 except the bolani. We didn't realize that we were ordering two servings of it. We thought the potatoes and the leeks were mixed in together, but you have to choose either the leaks or the potato. So we ended up with two different bolani, one with just leeks and one with just potato. Wasn't super impressed with either of them, although my friend who came with me loved it. Personally, I think it would've been better if the potato and the leeks were mixed together. I was REALLY looking forward to the mantu but it's mostly beef mixed with a little lamb and I don't eat lamb at all. Mantu is one of my favorite dishes and really would love an option without lamb. The chapli kabob with the white sauce is the perfect mix of smoky and tangy. The borani banjan was absolute perfection with the naan. I can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. They said they will be making hand made afghan ice cream in the next week or two! And more items are on their way they are just waiting for things to arrive for Afghanistan. All of the portions were a great size and the price was unbeatable. We even had food left over to go. The only downside to this is the parking lot. There's literally like two spaces, but there is a strip mall on the side of it where I believe you can park most of the time the ambience could use some more but as long as the food is good, I'm here for it. Will be back

Stop scrolling on yelp and put your sweater on and start driving. All I entered was meat in the search bar and this place came up. I was sold. I walked in, very quiet, only 2 tables and interesting vibe. Kind of like A house. The server had this very serious but welcoming look, kind of like a mob boss. I was intrigued. He didn't talk much but his attention to detail was perfect. We ordered a lot so he added a table to make sure we had enough space. He asked if the temperature in the restaurant was ok for us and his recommendations were perfect. My friend and I were so shocked after taking our first bite. We were in disbelief. This food is that great. So fresh and flavorful. After we left, I noticed I could see the kitchen from the outside so I decided to be nosy and look inside and it was spotless. No health code violations in sight. Everything was soooooo clean and organized. I'm telling you this place is a WIN.

My cousins and I came here for our book club meeting and we LOVED IT! Abdul provided us with excellent customer service! Everything was so delicious and perfectly cooked. Our favorites were the leek bolani, qabuli rice, borani banjan, and their GREEN TEA! We'll be back :)

Gave this place a shot, as the food looked delicious and I was right! The food was very flavorful. We ordered the Chicken Kabobs, the Borani Banjan, and the Qabuli Palao Rice. I just wish the protein portion was larger; I felt like it was mostly a ton of rice. We asked for naan but their tandoori was down so they gave us rice. The chicken was super delicious though! Service was also great! Decor needs some work, as it's very simple right now. But still overall a nice place for some Afghan food!

Afghan Kabob House is located in a small strip plaza with convenient street parking right in front of the shop. The restaurant is currently in its soft-opening phase, so some signs and interior elements are not yet finalized. The owner, although new to running a restaurant, has extensive experience in catering, which is evident in the quality of the food. The ambiance is simple but welcoming, with newly painted white walls and basic tables and chairs (which the owner mentioned will be replaced soon). The food is undoubtedly the highlight of this place. We started with the Dough, an Afghan yogurt drink that is incredibly refreshing. It's like a cross between an Indian salty lassi and Greek tzatziki--cold, watery, and infused with mint and cucumbers. I highly recommend it. The Qabuli Palao Rice dish, featuring juicy lamb that fell right off the bone, was another standout. The rice was soft, slightly sweet from the raisins and carrots, and rich with the flavor of lamb juices. Our favorite dish was the Borani Banjan--fried eggplants in tomatoes. The tangy tartness of the tomatoes perfectly complemented the rich eggplants and the dish's delicious oil. We also enjoyed the Bolani Mix, which is like a stuffed chapati filled with a potato and leek mixture. The accompanying chutney paired perfectly with the Bolani and would likely be fantastic with a yogurt dip as well. The service was attentive, even though we were the only guests on a Saturday afternoon. Despite being in the early stages, the food at Afghan Kabob House is outstanding, and I highly recommend giving this place a try.

By far the best Afghan food that I've had at any Afghan restaurant from San Francisco to New York and including Toronto Canada. We ordered the lamb kebab with bread and chicken kebab with rice along with the Afghan salad with their yogurt drinks. The owners have made our stay very special and they truly went above and beyond on their customer service. The ambiance is amazing as they have an authentic place that you can eat in the traditional afghan way. I highly recommend this place to anyone that wants to eat traditional Heratie Afghan food. Looking forward to coming back again insha Allah soon. To top it all off, they survey Salaam Cola!!!

My husband and I work just down the street and had been wanting to try this spot ever since it opened.. we finally did tonight and I think we just found our new lunch spot. A++++ for FLAVOR cause every bite had us looking at each other in disbelief. We started off with the potato and leek bolani, which is like a thin, crispy flatbread with filling inside! Our server brought out a trio of yummy sauces with them and even gave a recommendation as to which would pair best with each bolani. We then ordered the beef kabobs with rice. The meat- satisfyingly charred and crispy on the outside yet tender on the inside. The rice- perfectly fluffy and absorbed all the delicious saucy goodness we added to it. Last but not least, our favorite dish, the chicken Karahi. It's spicy with just enough kick. It's tantalizingly aromatic. It's oily but not obnoxiously so. It simply ticked all our boxes. The little leftover "gravy" from it was so good, we poured it on the remaining rice and beef and went to flavortown. Really good stuff man. P.S. I forgot to get the name of our server but I think he might be the owner too? Really chill dude. He let us know they specialize in catering too. Definitely will be letting the boss know for the next time he feels like buying the office lunch!

We ordered the Qabuli Pulao and Baingaan (eggplant) The food was fresh. Steaming hot. Flavors were rich and delicious. I love that they have traditional seating options as well as modern. The owner was serving us and it was a very authentic experience. We licked our plates clean and can't wait to come back and try the rest of the menu. P.S The Naan needs work. It was good but not quite there yet. A good Pakistani/Afghani Tandoori milk Naan (Doodh waali roti) or a roghni naan would be a home run.

The food was good, I recommend the Bolani so good, and their curry was amazing also. The waiter was the only one there so service was a little slower but he did amazing multitasking with all the tables he was serving, while still following up with us. Very hard working young man thank you for the great service gentlemen. I would definitely come again.

Just recently went there again. My first time was back in August when they had just opened. The experience was a bit better, mainly because it was cool and when I was there it was rather hot and their AC wasn't working, but I can't blame them for that. They seem to have gotten a bit more staff and so they're less harrier than in August. They're quick to take your order and bring out the food. This time around we had their beef and leek dumplings, alas no photos and the same dishes as last time. Their menu is rather small but the dishes are delicious! The food is just as good as last time. The portions are generous. The restaurant is a bit on the smaller side so it may get a bit crowded and sadly the parking out front is a bit of a hot mess since you're backing out onto Imperial Hwy. when leaving. But the food makes up for it and I'm looking forward to returning to what's quickly becoming a favorite Downey restaurant and I'm looking to try what ever off menu specials they have that day.

So delicious and authentic literally no complaints just compliments. My favorite appetizer was the eggplant and the potato bread. Their signature lamb shank rice was best ever. Loved the sitting area at the back so comfortable and delicious can't wait to be back.

Absolutely delicious. The food was flavorful, loved the spices used abs dressing that was provided. It's a small location, but it was perfect for my spouse and I. The service was quick, we had our food served under 10 minutes.

Had the pleasure of stopping by this place for a celebratory end of week dinner, chanced upon this place on Yelp out of the blue. The menu isn't extensive but it has a lot of knockout offerings and I did realize this seeing the different dishes that were being brought out for other people dining in. The pulao: everything was a perfect combination of flavors from the rice to the melt in your mouth lamb shank to even the raisins carrots and other flavorings. While I prefer spicier food usually, I didn't feel myself missing the hotter flavors I'm inclined to. The borani banjan and bolani were excellent as well Would come back again, warm service and amazing food!

Sunday dinner was the best at Afghan Kabob House tonight. The hospitality was wonderful, but the main thing is the food of course. So fresh! I had the Paleo rice with lamb. You don't see it under the rice, but it was a big leg with meat that fell off the bone. The rice was one of the best rice dishes I ever had- with delicious almonds and raisins. Hubby had lamb kebab that was so tender and grilled to perfection. Our side salad was very refreshing and the perfect accompaniment to the meal. We'll go back for sure! 8814 Imperial Hwy.

Randomly ended up here with a small group during a break for a school event and wow was I impressed. I ordered the lamb kabobs and they were fantastic. It came with enough rice to feed 3 people and tomatoes. The spices/flavor was excellent and our group shared almost every dish on the menu. I'd highly recommend AKH. Great food with a very clean and pleasant atmosphere.

If you like Persian food, and/or Mediterranean food, you will enjoy the food here. This is a humble little restaurant, which serves up a lot of flavor with every dish, especially their lamb karahi. When I eat out I usually don't order chicken kabobs, because every restaurant seems to make them so dry, and bland, but this place makes wonderful chicken kabobs that are tender, juicy, and full of balanced flavor. Over the past few months I have managed to work my way through their menu, and have always been satisfied, and the service is always welcoming, warm, and friendly. Plus they are often open late when many places are closed, which I appreciate on those nights when I am working late.

The service was outstanding, Ahmed takes pride in his restaurant. The food was fresh, flavorful and authentic. They have a super cool traditional Afghan set up in the back that transports you to the roots!

Just enjoyed beef kabob with garlic naan and Chicken Karahi! Flavors were on point! Food served up piping hot, just the way I like it and customer service was super. Ambiance was quaint.

Been there twice already. My absolute favorites are the Qabuli Pulao and the Lamb Karahi. They use the best quality hand slaughtered halal meat. The quality of the lamb is just too good. Very Succelent and not too gamey. The karahi is not too spicy and the flavor of the meat and the tomatoes really shines. If you are tired of having spicy South Asian curries, this karahi is a must try. The owners are very kind and they are will answer all your questions very patiently. The ambience is very casual and the place is very well lit naturally.

First time trying afghani food and I'm obsessed with the chicken Kabob and the green sauce perfection I have it at least once a week !

I came here with my husband and mother in law and wow. My mouth is watering just thinking about their bolani and homemade chutney (even though we JUST left.) We ordered the yummy aushak, potato and leek bolani, white rice, chicken kabob & chapli kabob on a bed of bread. The portions were enough for us three to get full and have two to go boxes for later. You truly feel the afghan hospitality the second you walk in. My favorite spot was the seating against the wall. Sit there so you feel the true authenticity of Afghanistan while eating your delicious food!

I just want to say, the owner/cook is doing such a good job in taking feedback! I noticed an improvement in the rice this time! It used to be more on the dryer end before and it was more oily this time (in a good way) also smelled so good! I believe it didn't have an aroma before. It was perfect! Nice and fluffy too! Also noticed they added a kick to the sauce and has a bit of spice to it now! Just the right amount for spice lovers and for people that like mild, it was just right! Happy customer forsure

Amazing service! Delicious food and felt right at home, maybe because I was the only one there?? Point is I'm glad I had the ability to try something NEW, FRESH, ORGANIC and HEALTHY. The quality of food is so noticeable! I ate a lot and didn't feel bloated or sick, no heartburn or issues with digestion. I had BORANI BANJAN: Borani Banjan is a classic Afghan dish featuring fried eggplant, simmered in a seasoned tomato-based sauce. 5/5 this was so delicious I was surprised how delicious you can make eggplant! It was truly a Chefs kiss and NOW one of my favorite dishes QABULI PALAO RICE: The crown of Afghan cuisine. Steamed rice mixed raisins and almonds, caramelized carrots and spices. Served with lamb. 5/5 the lamb was so tender and this style of cooking of the rice was new and intriguing to my taste buds. sweet isn't really my thing. I prefer savory tastes, especially if it's a meat dish. Point is I loved it, I'm glad I enjoyed it! It was recommended to me by the kind staff. The vibes inside are so calm and quiet. Had time to talk with the Co-owner he is my new friend! Please come and try authentic afghani dishes they're are delicious . Come support they just opened and are still growing! The Co-owner himself told me they are going to make afghani Ice Cream. So I'll be back to update, you already know .

The flavors was like a musical in my mouth. So delicious, almost I lick my plate. Very authentic. Loved it. Service was good as well. Little hole in the wall to keep coming again and again.

Fantastic food and service. It was that more enjoyable to be shown which sauce goes with which dish and how important they made each with fresh, healthy ingredients. Despite eating a lot, I didn't get food coma after. I imagine it's related. Will definitely be coming back for more

Terrific place.! Had the chicken kabob it was so tasty. This will definetely be a place I will visit with family and BFFs. Very clean and friendly staff. I tried the eggplant also and my friend had the lamb kabob.

From east coast to the west coast, you will not find any Afghan Restaurant like Afghan Kabob House. The food tests like top notch homemade food. 100% authentic. As an Afghan, I am very critical of afghan restaurants. We ordered Mantu, boloni , best chapli kabab, rice and chicken kabob and the best ever made lamb karrayee. Best service!! Best food!!

Incredible food and incredible service. The owner is so nice. We had the best food and everything was flavorful. I recommend getting the Karahi spicy if you want it "desi" style. I will get the Kabuli Pulao with lamb shank from here every time!

The food very bad, service is awful, I drove 30 mins to test their food it doesn't worth it. It's not an afghan food. We have just rejected their kabab. Not recommended

Came in and grabbed take out and was really impressed. Got the chicken kebab and bolani. The chicken and rice were really tasty with a good portion. I've never had bolani before and loved it! They're friendly and the restaurant was clean. I'll definitely be back to eat there.
