Afrikiko Restaurant Review - Westwood - Houston - The Infatuation

"We don’t fully understand how all of the magic that happens at the Westwood restaurant Afrikiko is contained by four walls. At this Ghanaian spot you’re taken care of with a bowl of warm water for hand-washing between dishes. There are few other places making meat pies that welcome you like a guest of honor and serve great jollof. The dishes here are exceptional—from rich, nutty banku served with fluffy fufu to groundnut soup with tilapia that makes us question if we’ve ever truly tasted tilapia before this. photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva photo credit: Liz Silva Food Rundown photo credit: Liz Silva Waakye With Tilapia Smoky rice and peas make up the waakye. Order yours with the tender tilapia and spicy shito. photo credit: Liz Silva Beef Meat Pies The beef meat pies here are some of the best in Houston and a must-order dish at Afrikiko. They’re filled with seasoned beef, and the crust is so flaky and buttery that the Pillsbury Doughboy should be taking notes. photo credit: Liz Silva Banku With Beef And Groundnut soup Banku here is served with a bowl of earthy groundnut soup that tastes like a savory melted peanut butter. Get beef added to your soup to scoop with the banku. photo credit: Liz Silva Jollof Rice The jollof rice at Afrikiko restaurant is subtly sweet and coated in tomato. It’s pillowy soft and full of robust flavors that can stand on their own." - Gianni Greene

Although this place is nestled away, it is awesomely, overwhelming, and flavors and hospitality! I was treated with a visit to this awesome restaurant by my family as I celebrated my 60th birthday this year. Upon arriving to this place, I had read reviews. The reviews were pretty good. As soon as we stepped through the door, we felt like family. It’s as though we showed up to our family‘s house and were sitting and waiting on the freshest, most amazingly prepared meal ever! The food was absolutely amazing. The meat pies, the food, the stews, the soups, the drinks, and rice dishes were extraordinarily delicious. Although we live over 200 miles away, this is a place that is worth the drive. If you are ever in Houston, passing through Houston, or like myself, you live far away, you will be glad to experience such culinary exquisiteness!

Google
Literally not exaggerating..... but truly my #1 spot now. Authentic, friendly, and QUICK. I asked for spice and they definitely brought it. Go see Ophelia and her family, they know exactly what they're doing, if you go anywhere else I cannot guarantee the same quality and deliciousness : ) **Pictured below is Efo Riro (no meat), Egusi (no meat), Jollof Rice + sauce (no meat), Fish Pepper Soup (no meat) all with pounded yam

Google
Afrikiko This place serves traditional 🇬🇭 Ghana food seems to be a mixture of other beautiful African countries 🌍. I was greeted very well as I walked into the establishment. Reminds me so much of my trip to Ghana, I couldn't do anything but enjoy myself inside. Food was made to order and as the owner told me remember this is America so some of the spices and the things they use are not in the traditional food. My overall experience was very pleasing and the jollof rice was delicious. The fried plantains were the grand finale of this meal 🤩.

Google
Delicious food. Amazing and friendly service! And an excellent place for Ghanaian and other African dishes. This place is family owned and you can clearly perceive their delight when you're excited by your meal. I ordered waakye (rice & peas) with fried plantains and goat meat stew. That was absolutely delicious! One friend ordered banku and okro soup, and the other got beans and fried plantains (red red). Their meals were also attractively served, and they confirmed that they were tasty and flavorful too. Check this place out for a fantastic meal experience. And when in doubt, be sure to ask your server for suggestions.

It was my first time trying African food. I ordered over the phone to go immediately when they opened. It took 25 minutes to be ready. Took me 20 minutes to get home. Food was very hot, I was glad it was. I give the food 4 because everything was well made. If you have not tried this food, go try it. I had the egusi with beef and Jolof rice, fufu and sweet plantains.

Google
Great food!!! Been trying every place I could but this now my new spot for African food

Google
One reason I love Houston, so many humble and unassuming establishments all over the city and Afrikiko is a perfect example of that! Offering up all kinds of traditional African dishes in a clean and cared for space. We tried the okra soup with goat and fufu. The flavor was beyond, like a much better gumbo.. eating it was slightly more tricky though! The ladies working there are so sweet and special and you can tell there is a lot of love and care in this establishment. I can’t wait to go back and try some new dishes, Thank you Afrikiko!

Google
So happy that I found this place. I had a small sample of African food egusi and fufu at an event and wanted more. I tried a Nigerian restaurant near me. It was ok but not wow factor. I was on this side of town and looked up fufu and found Afrikiko. YEEEEEES! I love their Beef and egusi with fufu! Will travel for food. I'm mad at myself for buying one plate. I gavevto remember to get two to enjoy a couple of days since they are so far from me. I should probably try sometime but I get leary to spend money and not be sure. I know I like this so that's what I get. They are my spot for that meal. It's over an hr drive for me to get there from where I live but worth it! It's in an old dank strip mall, so it's basically a hole in the wall. But black folks know that's where you get the best food!

Yelp
This mom & pop restaurant is the best african food in houston, the owners are so welcoming & nice! I ordered togo & the food was still delicious by the time I got home. The jollof rice was good especially with the beef, there was so much flavor in there. This is the best egusi soup i've ever had & the fufu was perfection. I like to grab a bit of fufu with egusi & drizzle some beef sauce on top for the perfect bite! 10/10 would recommend !!

Yelp
Oooooooh sweet mother of pearl! I stumbled on a gem today! Afrikiko is on fire (though the door was open so it was kinda chilly)!!!! From the minute I walked in, I knew that the odds would most likely be in my favor. First of all there are two huge portraits of the female proprietess and her husband flanking the cash register, in full Asante regalia. Which totally made me feel like I was in someone's living room looking at their mantle, versus at a restaurant. But it added a touch of culture and a huge sense of pride. There was a older man waiting for food, staring at the big screen tv, DANCING to the music. This is a great sign! Do you know how good this food is about to be, because I do, if it makes Papa DANCE!!! Oh yeah, I was getting excited. There was a fridge stocked FULL TO THE BRIM and spilling over onto the floor of every soda, both American and African, plus several types of beer. To me this read as "yup, you gone be thirsty after this FIYAHHHHHH"! And they weren't wrong! My food came out piping hot, relatively quickly, and paired with warm water for hand washing! Not every African restaurant is this traditional, so I again, knew it was about to go down!!!!! I would get into a lengthy description of the groundnut soup but that would waste more of your time reading, instead of driving, STRAIGHT TO Afrikiko!!! I will say that the side of spinach that I requested was so smooth and tomatoey and robust with flavor, that I was thoroughly surprised. I was expecting just a side of sautéed spinach, maybe a bit of onion or garlic, but that damn spinach was soooooo good I almost licked the bowl. If I could give 10 stars I would! This place will make me drive from Dallas yall! And you should too! Worth every single penny I spent! Thanks Afrikiko!

Yelp
This place was horrible, it was smelly inside and the food had a displeasing taste and the chefs are disloyal. I ordered the beef stew and egusi with fish but the fish had the beef stew sauce on it.mysteriously It seemed like they took the fish out from the stew and added it to the egusi to cover it up. Just complete laziness . Then I tried the beef stew and the beef tasted like fish !! No spice at all was in the food. The jell-of rice was sour and had no Smokey taste I spent 60 dollars with them generously what a waste. I know for fact they would not eat the food like how they served it so it was complete selfishness and for the money. Would not recommend at all please don't waste your money. "Taste of Nigeria" made up for there lack and I was very pleased if your looking for a good spot I recommend "Taste of Nigeria" not this place.

Yelp
Authentic Mom and Pop African Cuisine . You are greatly immediately with a warm welcome. The food is delicious and they are very generous with portion sizes. Highly recommend eating here

Joné H.

Yelp
This was my first time here. I met the owners and let me say some of the most beautiful people I have ever met ! I just ate my food like 45 min after I left and it was still hot! Did I say that it's delicious?! I ordered the beef egusi and beans. I'm so full off of the egusi I can't touch the beans. The food is not expensive at all and it's a lot of food! I also have a beef pie that is very delicious. Ms.Ophelia is the sweetest ever (owner) I love it there so much I will definitely be back.

Yelp
I was searching for some west African food, and found this place with good reviews. It's a bit far away in Houston. Started our meal with meat pie, and it was pretty good. Up next we ordered goat pepper soup and egusi stew. Now, I'm Nigerian and this is a Ghanaian restaurant. The stews with the pounded yams were good, but also different than what I've been used to. I was taken a bit aback but decided to have an open mind. I do wish the pepper soup was spicy like I'm used so but I think they saw me with my American friend and modified it Food: 7/10 Service: 10/10!

Yelp
Places like this make Houston so cool. You have to appreciate the diversity. I came in the afternoon and many online orders were being assembled. I was greeted friendly and ordered peanut soup with goat meat and fufu. I wasn't that hungry but the soup broth was delicious. The goat was a bit gamey , some pieces tough and chewy and other pieces meat that slide off the bone. The fufu was fine I never had African food before. I look forward to returning. I think the exotic African cuisine was worth the prices. Thank you.

Yelp
A small, little locally owned restaurant. We tried them out for lunch. The menu had quite a bit to choose from. We tried a variety of soups and the fried chicken. All of the dishes were very flavorful and the portions were big. The owner was very nice. She interacted with customers and explained everything. She was very friendly.

Yelp
OOOOOOOOOOOOH MY GOODNESSSSSSSS!!! That food was amazing. First off, the owner is a very nice man who explained to my boyfriend and I some of the most popular dishes. Since it was our first time, we had to just go all out with trying something new, so we each got a different plate. We ordered the Egusi soup with goat meat and yam fufu plus the jollof rice with the brisket .... Man oh mannnnnnn! The food didn't even make it out the restaurant before I opened each container to try a little. Everything was flavorful I actually just finished off the leftovers not too long ago! I cannot wait to go back and try new dishes!!!!! You definitely have to check this place out!!!! My only dislike were the plaintains, I guess I wanted them sweeter. But I'm going to try them again.
google avatar

Yelp
As a Nigerian, we hv amazing soups so my review may be a bit partial since my taste buds hv been blessed all my life.....After reading the reviews of their peanut butter soup perhaps I overhyped myself about it but in my reality it was just ok. Nothing I would order again, & goat meat being $5 extra for a few pieces is pretty excessive. The customer service was good, the environment ok. But the peanut soup I would rate 6/10. This is not to say their other dishes aren't fantastic. I've had their Jeloff rice when a coworker catered it which was pretty good. I would like to try their other dishes.

Yelp
Nestled in the back of a non-descript plaza is this gem, Afrikiko. We were starving on arrival, so we started with meat pies, which the waitress kindly heated up for us. These were piping hot and flakey with well seasoned beef- a great start. Jollof rice is really the extent of my experience with Ghanaian food, so my friend and I decided to instead take advantage of the stew and fufu meals and ordered a Goat Pepper stew and Egusi Soup with fried fish and pounded yam. I like that there were different options for how the fish was cooked or that we could even choose the meat in our stew. Both soups were flavorful and warming, and the pounded yam was the perfect vehicle. The Goat Pepper Stew was quite mild, so next time I will ask for it spicy - to be sure they don't hold back on me :) The waitstaff were friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to come back!

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
The food is authentic Ghanaian food! It tastes just like my mother's cooking! You can't go wrong with anything on the meal!

Yelp
This place is located in a super shady area and can be hard to find, but is as authentic as you can get. The restaurant is family owned, and the food is pretty good. I had the Jolof Rice and the owner was kind enough to let us try some fufu too. The flavors are unique and unlike anything I've had before. During covid they actually open at 1pm on Sundays (as opposed to 12:30 listed on their site/google). I personally have not eaten too much African food before, but the owner was kind and helpful in explaining. When I went with my sister, we were the only ones dining in. The owner sat with us and explained what was on the menu. Later after eating, the cook helped us pack our leftovers. (She could have simply just given us the box and let us do this ourself.) The owner might seem a bit inattentive/aloof but I promise he's friendly and kind. Overall I would probably come again. There are so many dishes I want to try on the menu and seeing how this is also a small business, I may as well shop local! Overlooking the area, I had a great experience.

Yelp
Food is really yummy, but area kinda sketch. Had to leave the restaurant and ask the owner to call me when the food was ready because my friend and I were being harassed by the some of their customers. These golden age (60+ yo) men were grabbing on my friend and I demanding us to sit with them, rubbing on us. aht ahr sir keep your hands to yourself please!! Anyway, The restaurant isn't at fault for how their customers behave, but if they're regulars I highly recommend the owners letting them know to not rush up on women!! Restaurant could use some lipstick and rouge to be more inviting, not a whole lot of seating available (about 6 tables with maybe 4 chairs each). Food: so good!! I had the beef stew with Jollof and plantains!! Delicious!! My friend had the Efo Riro ( I believe) with beef and fufu!! Everything was delicious and my friend and I danced while eating so you know it's real
google avatar

Jordan B.

Yelp
Some of the best egusi in town. I do not recommend ordering goat as I had pieces of goat fur in my soup, ruined my appetite. They should pay more attention to this issue. I would go back and order it with beef or another protein. Plantains we're so good I got extra to go.

Michelle M.

Yelp
I have come back to this place multiple times even after seeing some sketchy things in the surrounding area. The food is absolutely AMAZING here!! I didn't know what to order the first time I came, and the kind lady on the phone suggested peanut butter soup with fish and oh my god it's one of the best things I have ever had in my life. Truly a mind blowing meal every time.
google avatar

BlueBleuBlu B.

Yelp
I visited this restaurant based on the reviews. The restaurant was clean but there was a lot of clutter behind the register. They Occupy the space next-door for storage and it is visible to the public. It's very cluttered with cooking supplies. I moved past that and placed my order anyway. I purchased the fried chicken with the Jollof rice. The food was horrible. The Fried chicken was not edible! It was fried without any coating on it so it dried out the chicken and it was very hard to eat. The chicken was cut in a weird way it did not resemble chicken so I questioned the type of meat that it was. The Jollof rice was not good! Not happy with the food! I drove 26 miles round-trip and it was a waste of my time money and gas!

Cinthya V.

Yelp
Love it ! Awesome food ! Will be coming back service is very fast and everything is hot and ready to enjoy the people there are very welcoming and sweet the owner is very nice and friendly I highly recommend the fufu is delicious btw

Yelp
Came here on a whim with my mother and it did NOT disappoint! We wanted to try authentic West African cuisine and we happened upon Afrikiko when I googled around. We weren't sure what to get, so we asked the owner and he recommended: - Peanut Butter Soup w/ fish and fufu (A9) - Waakye (C7) - A side of okra and greens When I tell you I was IN HEAVEN from the first bite!! My mom and I shared our food and it was bursting with flavor with each bite taken. Everything was well seasoned, authentic, and highly aromatic. Great service as well! Highly recommend this restaurant, we'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Nesee M.

Yelp
I didn't like the supposed to be jollof rice. No spice to the rice. Egusi Soup was ok.
google avatar

Yelp
Writing this in the heat of the moment lol. Customer service Not welcoming. We went to order to go and thought that the owner was a customer . He was sitting, did not welcome us, acknowledge us or anything. Went to the counter to order and the lady/owner's wife walked over and stared. So at this point we figured that we have to welcome ourselves and run the show. Ok cool. Hopefully it goes up from here. Food We got 1 waakye and fish, 1 waakye and goat meat. The food was divine. Like finger licking good and fresh! One bite and you forget all about the poor customer service. The portion sizes are also big so that added to my happiness. Inside and Outside The inside is ok, typical African restaurant style. Simple. The outside/area is concerning. I did not dine in.
google avatar

Angela I.

Yelp
Service was outstanding but the food was average. The jollof rice was not that flavorful. The chicken that was in the red sauce that comes with the rice tasted old and dry. The flavor of the sauce was delicious however! The okra soup lacked flavor as well. The star of the show was the peanut butter soup. OMG the flavor and the spice level was perfection. However, the goat meat inside the soup was tough! Almost messed up the whole experience having to chew on tough goat meat. The portions were large and we didn't finish any of it. Definitely get your moneys worth.
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
Stopped by for lunch . Was not impressed. Meat was overcooked and very dry and tough and boney. Was in my opinion way overpriced .
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
Yes the location is a dodgy AF but the restaurant itself is a safe respite. Family run, no frills, fresh, and really delicious--absolutely get the okra soup with fufu. We liked everything we ordered, the beef and goat were both really tender and delicious. Flavor!!
google avatar

Shernell H.

Yelp
I went here for some jollof rice. I came in with average expectations as everyone's jollof just don't be hitting, however, this order was hitting. The rice was not dry or hard (I have experience this with some peoples jollof rice), it was just perfect. The flavors and accurate portion of stew, was everything my cravings desired. The fried tilapia was flavored well and fried pretty good as well.
google avatar

Sherika F.

Yelp
The area where this place is located is a bit sketchy but it did not stop me from going to Afrikiko. When i walked in, I was not greeted in a friendly manner. However, once I placed my order the owner gave me a smile and asked if I was Ghanaian. Side note, I love Ghanaian food and eat it often when i travel for work. So i pretty much know what and how the food looks. I ordered light soup ( Goat pepper soup) with FuFu and Kenkey w/ Fish. The goat soup had a lot more portions of meat than the other places I've been to but it lacked the authentic flavor. I was disappointed about that. The kenkey and Fish was a bit of a disappointment as well. The fish felt and tasted rubbery. I could tell it was not freshly fried and the Shito( hot pepper sauce) was not hot enough for my taste buds.
google avatar

Poison I.

Yelp
I called in my order today, when I got there it was ready to go. I ordered the peanut butter soup with goat....AMAZING!!!! I also ordered the beef stew, which worked wonders on my tastebuds. I can't wait to try different items on the menu. This was definitely worth the drive and the money.
google avatar

Cathy S.

Yelp
If you do go here, get the joife rice with beef, that's probably the best thing on the menu. So I decided to go here because I wanted to be adventurous and try new places to eat and this place had some pretty good reviews. I don't regret coming here, but I don't think I would return for a few reasons, none of which are extreme, so if you get anything out of this, know that it's worth trying if you've never had African food. So the great thing I love about this place is that it seems pretty authentic from the feel to the food. The owner has African style music playing in the background, and it's small and cozy. He's also really nice, and it seems like a fun place for people to just hang out and enjoy each other's company. But, it is a bit dinghy. I understand that mom and pop shops aren't going to be amazing, but I felt like the tables were a bit sticky, and the store wasn't in the safest of neighborhoods. It was actually in the way back of an empty looking shopping strip and took a second to find. I think it was just the feeling of it not being super clean that kind of got to me. Food: I didn't know what to expect honestly from this place and relied on other yelp reviews to know what to order. We ordered the peanut butter soup with goat meat and the cassava fufu. The soup had a pretty good taste, it had subtle hints of peanut butter and was rich and creamy, and while the goat meat was tender, there were still skin and fat on it that was a bit off putting. The fufu is like a dough type bread that you use to eat it with the soup, and had a consistency sort of like playdoh. The cassava made it taste a bit sour, but I think that's normal. I would try it with something else, maybe yam or plantain. We also got the joife rice with the beef which I enjoyed a lot more than the soup. The rice is a soft seasoned rice and a bit oily but tasted so good! It was well seasoned and I could probably eat this by itself. It came with a side of beef in a tomato sauce, and I say side because I felt like the rice was the star of the dish. The beef actually tasted like a ragu type dish and was tender and moist. I heard the plantain fries were good too, but we weren't hungry enough to order it. The portions were normal. They don't seem like there's a lot, but I think because there's a lot of starches and carbs in the plates we ordered, it was enough to make us full. Price: This is probably the main reason why I knocked this place down a few stars.... It was way too overpriced!!! For the amount of food you get, it isn't worth it in my opinion. Both our plates were $15 each, and it just wasn't a lot. Sure, it looked homemade, but that doesn't always mean it's a good thing. The plating was pretty haphazard and plates didn't match. Just overall did not feel like it should be sold for $15. They also don't give free water cups. Water is sold in bottles and is $1 each. service: the food didn't take too long to get to the table, but I wouldn't suggest going when you're on a time crunch or during lunch. The owner was nice, but because he was the only one there, it took him a while to get the check and stuff. Also, in the back, I could hear him putting stuff on the plate but didn't hear him cook anything, so made me wonder how fresh the food was... Overalls, worth it to try, but maybe not twice.

Yelp
So delicious!! Got the beef stew and okra stew with the rice was very tasty!! Would recommend this place has been here for 25 years and the owners are so sweet and make you feel at home

Yelp
Stop do not go here! The food is greasy and taste like it was old. If I could negative stars I would. I literally tried to wash my mouth out!

Yelp
I ordered fufu with groundnut soup and chicken and then another order of fried yam and I didn't even eat any of my food. The soup was okay but the chicken tasted old and I'm just disappointed.

Yelp
This spot has some of the best African cuisine!! My daughter stumbled upon them and I'm glad she did!! The food is deliciously seasoned and spiced! The portions are huge and the prices are right!!

Yelp
If your looking for good tasting Ghanaian food unfortunately this is NOT the place!!! I got their waakye...ohhh wow talk about nasty! The stew was like soup!the waakye was like uncle Ben rice whew!! I will really avoid rice dishes at this place!!

Yelp
This restaurant can initially be a little difficult to find but it is a small shop located behind the Burger King on Bisonnett. Since my friend and I came in around 8:30 (they close at 9), we were encouraged to order to go which we were both fine with. When we came in we were not offered a menu but simply asked what we wanted. Since I was familiar with the type of food I placed an order for Jollof rice, stew, and fried plantains. The food was decent, definitely not the best rice I've had but it was flavorful. I enjoyed the beef stew a lot! Overall it was a nice place to get decent African food with very nice owners and staff. I would come back to try something different!
google avatar

Maccoy H.

Yelp
Today I went to this restaurant not knowing if I would like it because I've never had African food before but as I entered I could tell that the people and food would be good . It had an amazing atmosphere and the people in the restaurant were very kind. My food came out just how I wanted it and tasted great would eat here again for sure.

Yelp
After listening to a suggestion from someone at the Ghana Embassy, my family and I decided to try this restaurant. Being from outside the Houston Area and a proud Ghanaian, I was excited to see Houston's version of the "best" Ghanaian food. But my experience at this place was less than pleasant. There was no one at the front to take our orders. We waited over 15 minutes just for someone to notice we were inside. The owner/chef was arguing with another customer while we waited over an hour for our food to get out. The food was subpar at best and the menu wasn't clear. To make matters worse and the main reason I'm writing this review is because our left over food was saved instead of thrown away right in front of us! Do yourself the biggest favor and go somewhere else!

Yelp
This is the worst African food I've tasted. It's not authintic and the meats wear freezer burned and you can taste it. I bought several dishes for my family and we got sick immediately...literally...after about 5 min into my Jollof rice i vomited. The fish was stale, the soup was not seasoned well, The Banku and Fufu is made from pakages..we call it neat banku or fufu..nothing homemade about it. So disappointed and i drove over an hour because of the reviews..i would not recommend..the people commenting are either friends or paid.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! It's located near a run down area off bissonnet with a makeshift sign that points to the restaurant depending on which direction you're coming from. If from the 59 highway, it'll be on your left. The restaurant is very tiny and it's not the cleanest but the food is delicious. We were recommended to try their popular dishes being the peanut butter soup, rice, goat soup, fufu which is a type of dough to dip into the peanut butter soup, fried tilapia and fried plantains. We didn't get too much meat from the tilapia but this does come out whole meaning it's not precut for you so you get the entire fish on the serving plate. The fufu dough was ok, it doesn't taste like anything so we didn't like it too much even when we dipped it into the soup. The jollof rice was so flavorful and chewy. The goat soup had about several chunks of goat meat with the bone. It wasn't very tender so it was harder to chew. Water bottles are given since I'm assuming they don't have tap. It got real rowdy past 9pm with a group nearby us and the restaurant dimmed the lights and turned up the music. It may as well have turned into a nightclub or bar. If you're open to try new and exotic foods, I definitely recommend this restaurant!

Yelp
Ahhhh not THE BEST African food I've tasted. But they were decent. I will say that their meat was super fresh and light...I really enjoy that part of the dish. I got the pepper soup (which was the best in terms of seasoning), groundnut soup (aka peanut butter soup), and split half of my egusi with my friend, which was decent but not the best I've had. Overall the experience was nice...everyone was sweet and gave excellent service

Yelp
Afrikikko is a 5 star place in a 1-star neighborhood but I don't care! I will travel to ends of the earth for great food! Especially African food! Lol I have come to this place off and on for the past 15 years! They are probably the best when it comes to authentic West African food here in Houston. My favorite go-to dishes are pounded yam and ogbono soup. The okra soup is delicious as well. The jollof rice and red stew also deserves an honorable mention. I also love the way they cook the plantains. This is a family owned business and the restaurant is very small inside. I think my living room may be bigger than the dining area! I usually call in my order for carry out. I have dined inside with family and friends and never had a true problem with service. There is a small "bar" area as well.

Yelp
First experience with African food and it's delicious. We ordered vegetable soup meal and palm nut soup meal. Fufu is interesting and fun to eat.

Yelp
I had called in an order for soup with dry fish. Upon my s/o picking it up bring it home; I realized they gave me meatless meat and bones. I was pregnant and was craving dry fish. I put a call through to the business owner and she said for my S/o to come get the fish the next day. My significant other new how much I wanted to eat that food so he went to go get the fish for me on his own accord that night. The lady gave him fried tilapia instead because she didn't have the dry fish. I took as it was. I called back to put in an order for Waakye but was inquiring about the prices... after letting me know the sizes; I decided to order the small one. She then referred me saying " you must be that woman who asked your husband to come get that fish that night huh.. even tho I told you to come the next day." Then she also said why am I asking her all these questions just order a small plate of Waakye... I was appalled. Immediately hung up and didn't order and haven't ordered anything from there since. Rude and poor customer service. No rating for this store.

Yelp
Authentic atmosphere and food run by Nana (his title, not his name; he's the Houston chief for the Ghanaian Asanti tribe) and his wife, who were incredibly welcoming. FOOD - Made entirely from scratch by the family/owners. - Very filling; I am usually a big eater but I had to bring half of my food home! ATMOSPHERE/SERVICE: Came with a group of friends, including someone who'd done Peace Corps in Ghana and who could show us the ropes. But even if she hadn't been there, the staff were incredibly friendly, both to her and us newcomers who were completely clueless about Ghanaian cuisine. Spent the rest of the evening with Nana and his steady stream of friends coming and going, looking through photographs of their recent Asanti convention, watching the video of Nana's coronation, and drinking Riesling and Guinness. FINDING PLACES LIKE THIS IS THE REASON I USE YELP!

Yelp
Food was ughhh ..... I was looking for a Ghanaian restaurant that's good in Houston and i have yet to find one. The light soup tasted old and the meat wasn't fresh.. it wasn't worth the $15... I would've been happier eating a burger than this !!

Yelp
Drove an hour to try this place. Was well worth it! The owners were friendly and attentive. Every dish was flavorful. Authentic West African cuisine.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth a try if you like exploring new cuisines and eclectic neighborhoods of H-Town. I, for one, definitely have a strong liking for hole-in-the-wall places and this one fit the description. It's West African food, from Ghana. Menu was semi-elaborate which made ordering a challenge, since half the things on the menu you have never heard of. The owners of the restaurant (I think they were a husband wife team) were really helpful in making recommendations and helping us choose our food. A must have here is the Fufu - which is this doughy thing that you dip in your curry/soup and eat. It resembles...well, pizza dough and is quite doughy and filling. The texture was like a chinese pork bun but more dense. The fufu itself comes in 4-5 different variations - we had one made with yam and one with oatmeal and both were really good to soak up the curry/soup. I ordered the deep-fried fish which came with a Jambalaya style rice and a savory gravy. It was good, nothing spectacular. Order only if you are ok with picking bones out and deboning fish with your hands. The Fufu I mentioned earlier was actually an accompaniment to the much spoken about Peanut Butter soup. The soup (think of a curry, more than soup) was the only reason I took a couple stars off for this place. Don't get me wrong - the liquid part of the soup was delicious - sweet, savory, balanced, tasty, and just perfect to soak up with the fufu............but the goat meat I opted for in my soup is what spoilt my entire meal for me. They leave a thick layer of fat/gristle on the goat meat when serving it. This gristle was inedible even for the staunchest of carnivores and goat-eaters like me. I am not sure if other people who have had this soup felt the same. I had to discard the meat and eat just the soup, something which I don't think I have done ever. 5/5 for the excitement and uniqueness of the Ghana cuisine. 1/5 for the goat gristle used in the Peanut butter soup (I don't think it appeals to the american palette). I will be back here again, just after i get over those gristle flashbacks.

Yelp
Delicious food and very warm welcome feelings provided by the owners. It's a Ghanian restaurant Love it love it love it and I totally recommend it First thing first, I'm from Africa not from Ghana though and I love African food When I first walked in that restaurant I thought to myself this is not the right place to be but still decided to stay because based on other reviews I should give them a chance. Looking at the menu I felt a little bit frustrated but that's just me because I eat out on a daily basis and I don't see myself spending $15 everyday for my lunch cuz that's the average price for their food Still I decided to give it a shot and ohhhh Lord!!!!! It was soooo Good so delicious and my stomach was full before even finishing my food Please try the fried plantain as extra combined with any other food. It's just unbelievable. I've been looking for that plantain everywhere and it's just the way I love it I totally recommend this restaurant

Yelp
Afrikiko is definitely a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, and its food is delicious. Our server was super friendly and gave great advice about what to order and how to eat the food, as we'd never visited a true African restaurant before. On our server's recommendation, we ordered the peanut butter soup with goat meat and fufu. The peanut butter soup was delicious (it wasn't super peanut butter-y). I think the fufu is something that you need to get used to if you've never tried it before, and I'm glad I tried it. The jalof rice was OK (it kind of tasted like normal Tex-Mex rice), but the chicken in a tomato sauce that came with it was my favorite part of the meal. With two entrees and two bottles of water, we spent $32 + tip--a little high for a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, but the food and experience were great.

Yelp
Food was really good. The actual restaurant can be made to look more presentable but the items I had tasted great. Called ahead of time to order food so it was ready to pick up . More blessing to them
