"Owner Bobby Hooper painted the space purple and black, installed a DJ booth in the back, and fashioned a cocktail menu of inventive drinks including an activated charcoal mezcal margarita; in the tradition of the prior plant-based tenant he also put vegan fare on the menu. The bar does not open until 2 p.m., and after noticing a lot of foot traffic during the day Hooper invited Chris Hudson to operate a daytime food program. The venue's grand opening in early November 2024 boasted vegan food, and Hooper's late-night offerings include non-traditional bar plates such as butternut squash and a variety of chilis." - Paolo Bicchieri
"Afterlife sounds like a goth club, but the mood here skews a bit more cyberpunk, with a lot of recessed neon backlighting and angular 3D-printed geometry. This stretch of Hawthorne historically hasn’t been kind to bars that aren’t named Bagdad or Mulligan’s, but this is a fun addition to the strip. The cocktails are complex and often caffeinated, but the ingredients are thoughtfully balanced against each other. Joints that look like this sometimes serve cloying, overly sweet gamer fuel and overpriced junk food, but the confident cocktail menu and Gnarly’s legendary sidewinder fries make this an extremely viable late-night spot." - Ben Coleman
