"This Heights restaurant (which has locations in Portland, Oregon; Los Angeles; and in Japan) creates hot bowls of ramen that everyone can enjoy, thanks to its gluten-free rice noodles. Kick off the experience with yuzu shio edamame topped with black pepper and garlic chips or the colorful fruit shira-ae salad, a mix of greens, seasonal fruit, miso cashews, and yuzu drizzled with a tofu dressing. A bowl of yuzu or tonkotsu shio ramen, each with char siu and an egg, complete the meal. Be sure to make any allergies known before ordering and request gluten-free soy sauce." - Brianna Griff

"This sleek new Japanese restaurant in the Heights goes beyond the typical offerings with karaage, dumplings, sushi, handrolls, and rice bowls — but its ramen is still the main event. Bowls of noodles come with delicate broths, including its signature Yuzu Shop that’s made from a reduction of chicken, dry fish, seaweed, and vegetables with a hint of yuzu citrus, while the Tonkotsu Shio loads up bowl a bowl of thin noodles with an umami-packed broth and a topping of scallions, wood ear mushroom, black garlic oil, char siu, pickled ginger, egg, and sesame. Branch out with Afuri’s tsukemen, or dipping ramen, which comes in a yuzu-forward or spicy dipping sauce to dunk in the noodles, served to your preference, either warm or cold." - Brittany Britto Garley

"You can get a warm and fuzzy feeling from the spirit of Christmas or opt for a bowl of steaming tonkotsu from Afuri Ramen. This Heights restaurant will offer bowls of ramen from 11am-10pm, and make sure to throw an order of crispy bok choy and a salmon handroll on the side. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Gianni Greene

Afuri Ramen and Dumplings absolutely lives up to its Michelin-star reputation! Every dish we tried was a masterpiece. The groggy spicy chicken broth noodle was a flavor explosion—rich, perfectly spiced, and absolutely comforting. The tempura sushi roll was light, crispy, and bursting with freshness, while the cheesecake was the perfect creamy and decadent ending to the meal. The attention to detail, from the presentation to the balance of flavors, was impeccable. The ambiance and service were just as stellar, making it an unforgettable dining experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking for exceptional cuisine! Can’t wait to return!

This spot offers a decent ramen experience, but it didn’t quite hit the mark for me when compared to similar bowls I’ve had elsewhere. While the flavors were there, they lacked that bold, punchy heat I was hoping for when I asked for a spicier option. The broth had a good base, but it didn’t quite deliver that fiery kick you’d expect from standout ramen spots known for their intense spice levels. That said, there were definitely highlights. The flight of sake was a unique touch, offering a great variety and a fun way to explore their selection. The ambiance is casual and comfortable, making it a nice spot for a laid-back meal. While it didn’t become a top contender in my ramen list, it’s still a solid choice for a quick bite, especially if you’re looking to try something like their sake flights or unique appetizers. For me, though, there are other ramen places that stand out more.

Ramen was delicious but I thought this was also a dumpling place. I don't know what I'm missing like do they only serve it at night, is it a special menu...? 🤷 Anyways, we ordered 2 rolls. Vegetable roll could use some pickled veggies, but I liked that they added carrots and the rolls were tight. We also ordered 2 lunch combos. The lemonade drink was awesome! Egg was just a regular boiled egg, but cooked just right. Everything was good! Restaurant was beautiful!

Afuri offers a diverse menu and drinks. Overall I think the execution was great but the food was just very good and not great. I was not blown away but I wasn’t unhappy. The rolls are simple and well done but somewhat lacked flavor. The bok choy was perfectly cooked and seasoned with garlic + crispy edges. The Albacore Tataki is a great call with the yuzu and citrus flavor. The crispy eggs are fabulous if you like soft boiled eggs. The ramen was good, not great. The broth was not the rich creamy broth I was expecting but it had good flavor, although there was a bitterness I couldn’t figure out. It was still great and well worth a visit because the quality to price is great and it was awesome service!

Menu consisted of interesting ingredients which gave it a nice kick to traditional flavors. Yuzu ramen had the taste of citrus flavor. Sushi rolls were a little dry-ish and was toy size. Smallest rolls portion I've ever had for a costly price. Dumplings had a nice crispy underside with lots of scallions. Overall, everything on menu was bite-sized. Ramen was good but order two if you want to get full. Nice ambiance and very spacious.

Thoroughly impressed with the entire dining experience our family had here. The staff was very welcoming, and everything was prepared beyond our expectations. The Yuzu Ramen and Tonkatsu Shio were exceptional. The only thing I’d mention is that our waiter was a bit hard to catch after his initial check-ins I just wanted to add the Yuzu lemonade to our order. No biggie though! The Ube Milk Tea was to die for, and those fried eggs, wow! We’ll definitely be returning.

I have the yuzu ratan which is quite citrus, the broth is clear but flavorful. However I feel like topping didn't shine with the ramen, and the menna was too thin and did not have the sweetness to it. The noodles are thin ramen noodles but with nice bite. Nice place and very spacious, with an open kitchen concept.

Afuri is a Japanese restaurant specializing in ramen located in the Heights and has become one of my favorite ramen places in Houston. I have noticed that tonkotsu ramen is more common and popular among many ramen restaurants in Houston. However, I personally prefer something shio ramen, which has a chicken broth base. Afuri has both! I have tried their Yuzu Shio (without the yuzu), Tonkotsu Shio, and the Tonkotsu Tan Tan. You can also customize your own ramen bowl with the shio broth, which I thought was neat. All three broths were great. The shio was light and refreshing and was one of my favorites. The tonkostsu shio was rich and light and not as heavy as other tonkotsus I have had. The tonkotsu tan tan was another favorite. Spice tolerance is subjective, but I would say it is not that spicy. However, there was a nice depth to the broth, and I really liked the thick noodles that come with it. They were bouncy, and you can tell it was made in their restaurant. We had a tuna tartare, which was fresh, but I do wish it has more than four gyoza chips. I also had an albacore tuna handroll on one of my visits during happy hour. It was fresh and reasonably priced. The inside is very very spacious. There’s some free parking in the back, but it is shared with other establishments in the plaza. The staff and service were nice and friendly, and everything came out in a very timely manner. Overall, a Afuri has become one of my favorite ramen restaurants in Houston. I especially really like their shio Ramen and tan ran tonkotsu.
