Johnny O’s hot dogs closing after nearly 60 years | Eater Chicago

"An old-school Bridgeport hot dog stand with roots back to 1959 and a presence at its current site since 1970 is closing and is set to serve its last sausage on Saturday. Operated by the Veliotis family for decades, it was a late-night destination just west of Guaranteed Rate Field, known for Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef, the “Mother-in-Law” (a tamale in a hot dog bun topped with chili), and packaged goods. The business has struggled in recent years, compounded by the 2017 deaths of John Veliotis Jr. and founder John Veliotis, and owners launched a GoFundMe earlier this month seeking $100,000 to pay off a small business loan taken out shortly before John’s death and to cover renovations and license renewals; the campaign had raised only about $600. At one point the family had even teased opening an arcade bar next door, hinting at a possible shift away from the stand’s longtime low-key approach." - Ashok Selvam

We had a great time at this restaurant, we stopped here for a quick lunch and was delighted with it. We really liked the venue - you can tell they had spent time designing a great space with more attention to details. The menu was great and they had a lunch deal which was great so we could try a couple of dishes. Most fun of all was the Mister/ Ms Cat robot who served food to the table! The kids absolutely loved it and can’t wait to come again. We had a noodles and rice dish which was tasty and fresh.

This is a beautiful place, inside & out! We sit in the patio. I love it! They had a heater. It would've been nice if the higher the heater a little bit. Temperature was set at 76°. Nicely decorated with plants & lights. Service is excellent! Food is ok. I do think it's a bit expensive. I ordered a chicken stew. There was too, too many bones! Tiny little bones, I felt like I was eating a fish with e million tiny bones. It was bland, no flavor at all. My husband ordered orange chicken with fry rice & a vegetable egg roll. It was very good 👍🏻😊. He did ask for extra spicy 🔥 🥵 but to his disappointment it wasn't not even a little bit. I ordered a cheesecake, mango flavor. Lie! That was NOT a cheesecake! It was a mango flavor dessert but it was definitely not a cheesecake. Also, it was a very small slice. The crab rangoon. It was delicious!!! 😋😋😋

Great ambiance, service, and food! I visited this place with my family (wife and 2-year-old). We had 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts. We were in the sun room - omg, it was great. We had an overall great experience. It is high praise if my toddler eats her dinner and we don't need to return home to feed her more things. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. The robots added a novel touch to the restaurant. The food looked clean and aesthetically appealing but could have more seasoning (and salt).

Google
The food was overall fine. The Korean chicken wings we had were a little too salty. But the calamari was under salted and a bit bland. Crab Rangoon was fine. The entrees were also fine. Nothing to complain about, nor brag about.

Google
A bit on the pricier side, I still really enjoyed my first visit here since they just opened. I really liked my seafood egg rolls. Good flavor and perfectly fried. The curry fish balls were delicious. The spicy chili chicken was good also but I think it would be even nicer with either a chili garlic sauce or something to add just a touch of moisture to counter the crunchy/drier type dish. The jasmine milk tea was nice! All in all, I will try again. Looking forward to trying something different.

Google
Delightful first visit to the 35th St / Morgan location. Classic Asian fairs like the Beef Lo Mien and Sweet Short Ribs & Taro taste just right. The Fried Calamari Salad and the NY Strip Steak Tacos are satisfying for customers like us who would prefer varieties of culinary styles in the same meal, East meets West, so to speak. Staff members are warm and caring. The bright and open ambience is a plus. It started to get busier after 5:30 pm Friday evening when we finished an earlier and quieter dinner.

Really interesting atmosphere. Also, a bit strange choice of menu items, but good food!

Google
Lunch on March 09 and was my second time. Food, service and atmosphere were good. However, for those who will visit, please CHECK your bill before you pay. I ordered three dishes. Stir fried E-fu noodles 10.99 Chinese broccoli 10.99 Fish head (today's special) 11.99 Supposed with tax should be $37.45 We didn't pay attention at that time. Just remember one item was $14.99 Total with tax was $44.07 Paid $52. On our way home, I was thinking how come the total was $44.07. And we figured out that they charged as follows:- $11.99 $12.99 $14.99 Total $39.97 plus 10.25%tax of $4.10 Final with tax was $44.07 Dishonest behavior is not acceptable. Why I said this is dishonest and not a mistake or mixed up? It happened to a few friends also, only they didn't bring this kind of issue out. This morning, I talked to my friend who originally recommended this place and he said that it happened to them too. Charged a couple dollars more, but he let go all the time. If you like the place, PLEASE CHECK YOUR BILL. I will not recommend this place even the food is good, ORIGINAL price on menu is reasonable, it's a principle of being honest. The server didn't do the check out, the owner did. (I guess is pretty lady behind the counter)

Yelp
This is a newer Chinese spot in Bridgeport along 35th and Morgan - not too far from Chinatown. There is a growing number of restaurants in this area and this happens to be walking distance to my parent's house. AFusion has your standard Asian menu, but set in a bright fresh setting. We came for lunch for Mother's day and my mom chatted with our server to see what was good, what was fresh. She recommended the chicken scallion, which resembles what most folks know as Hainanese Chicken, a delicately cooked free ranged chicken. Either I hadn't had it in a while but felt that was really good, nice ginger scallion soy sauce, perfect with rice. We also got a couple of dishes and they are good sized portions. Quality of rice was great and was included in the meal as well as the beautiful pot of tea, no extra charges! The lobster was fresh and meaty, the server said it came in that day and my dad noticed. Place is clean, bright and has a outdoor patio too. If you're craving fusion or classic Chinese, AFusion is a great option.

Yelp
I live just around the corner so decided to stop for a quick dinner. I really enjoyed their interior, it felt open and cozy inside, and it was very clean! The food was good too, and prices are also not that bad either. They have an expansive menu, which is great to accommodate all kinds of cravings and palettes.

Yelp
We came in with a large group for a weekend dinner meal. They have the far side of the restaurant with a separate sort of seating area that leads out to an outdoor patio space as well. Our large party of 2 tables was seated on this side of the restaurant. We ordered a variety of dishes served family style. The portions are a little smaller than what was expected. Some of the dishes were different than what we usually have at a sit down Chinese establishment and some were similar. The rice was the good short grain Chinese rice rather than the cheaper kind you might find at other places. The staff was pretty attentive, always making sure our water was filled and also that there was plenty of rice.

Yelp
Walnut Shrimp with Broccoli was really yummy (crispy, tasty, and juicy)!!! Although the Beef Chap Chae wasn't greasy where other restaurants usually are, the noodles did clump together. Clumping may be due to the fact that I picked it up instead of eating there. The food was all really great!! Customer service was on point. I noticed they even have a robot to serve the dishes. Price vs. quantity is why I gave them 4 stars. For the money I spent, they could have filled the containers. Menu shows they have smoothies, desserts, etc .

Yelp
Nice new Chinese restaurant that just opened up in Bridgeport last Fall. It's in the building where Johnny Oh's used to be, and I'm glad they were able to put something new there. There's multiple Chinese restaurants in Bridgeport now, and I don't know if I'd be able to effectively rank the food here with the others, but I certainly enjoyed everything I've had from there. They have a wide range of options. One thing though that puts them above others is they have a pretty big dining area compared to the rest, and a pretty nice one too. They also serve alcohol, which very few do. I've gotten it to go, and dined in, food was good both ways. You get a lot of food whichever dish you get, and the prices aren't too expensive. I'm sure I'll be going here again in the future.

Yelp
After being disappointed the first time I ate there a few months ago with tasteless mushy food I decided to give a second chance and get takeaway. Ordered the Orange Chicken and was terrible. No flavor, mushy consistency, chicken was chewy. In fact it felt like it was precooked that had been heated in the microwave. Or was orange chicken from Trader Joe's. Had requested condiments when I ordered online. Did not receive anything. Not even soy sauce. Rice was hard.

Yelp
When you enter, the restaurant is split into two area. There's a main seating area and then a private space in the back passed the kitchen. It was a Thursday night when my family decided to have dinner here. There was a few tables in the main area. I had seven in my party so they gave us the back space. The area seemed to have a theme as it was covered in all trees and vines and leaves. We ordered several dishes. We tried to order the typical Chinese dishes so we can compare them to other restaurants. You can either order online or with the waiter. We did the online option. However, I don't know if that made a difference with our meal. One dish came out 7 mins after we ordered. Then we had to wait 24 minutes in between after the first dish. My family was hungry so we did ask about updates. They told us it was a kitchen delay so we waited until the rest of the food came out. They then sent out 3 more dishes and then 12 mins after that, all our food had arrived. It's not typical for the restaurant to space out the food like that, therefore my family said they would not come back for the service or the food.

Yelp
We went during their soft opening, and when we sat down, they said that they were giving us their limited menu on paper because they were still figuring things out. However, we tried to order a couple things from that menu, and they didn't have them yet. We were able to order the beef bbq skewers, chicken fried rice and chicken lo mein. The beef bbq skewers were incredibly chewy and tough. The fried rice and lo mein was fine, but nothing special. I'm hoping that they continue to refine their menu, as the space was beautiful and they had cool robot waiters.

Yelp
I ordered the lunar year special and it did not disappoint. The general tso chicken and mongolian beef were delicious. Their fried rice was perfectly balanced with the right amount of soy sauce. The veggie egg rolls were just as good. I was curious to try their food and it was better than I expected. They also package their to-go orders very nicely. The staff was helpful and efficient. Definitely a good go to spot to have on the rotation. I ordered out but the inside is beautiful and welcoming for dining in.

Yelp
I dropped by within a few weeks of their opening - there are two areas to sit in, we sat in the back in the atrium like room. It was very pretty! The food was served and presented with effort. I think I'll revisit after this restaurant has had a chance to get settled.

Yelp
I hate to be this harsh but this was probably one of the worst experiences of eating out I've had in Chicago. By trying so hard to incorporate a hip fusion style theme, the restaurant lacks any quality or substance. The Sichuan green peppercorn was a big bowl of oil and large pieces of peppercorn difficult to eat around. No culinary skills displayed at all. I ordered an egg white omelette and I had to point out to my server that egg whites are white and not yellow. Yikes. I hope some major changes are made to the overall direction of the restaurant because this is a hard pass for me right now.

Yelp
We were excited to try this place but we were definitely disappointed in the service and the food. They didn't tell us that they didn't have their liquor license until we tried to order a drink, we feel like that should've been stated as upon giving us the drink menu. They blatantly brought me lo mein with NO noodles, just a pile of meat, even though it was clearly the wrong dish. The noodles weren't good anyways. The orange chicken & crab Rangoon were the best things we tried. The Korean short ribs were also tiny and underwhelming. Also hibachi is take out only. Overall, I don't need to visit again.

Yelp
My experience was overall pretty good. The decor is really nice and it is clean. I ordered the Eggs Florentine, which was good. My eggs were cooked perfectly and I love a soft English muffin! I also tried the pancakes, which had good flavor (didn't need the syrup) but I did have one recommendation to make sure they served clean pancakes without too many black peelings from the grill. That can change the taste. The service was great as well. If something was a mistake they made it right and with a smile!

Yelp
Anytime I come here and I request something and dont get it, such as no eggs in my rice or my salmon well done the manager always gives me attitude. Today I got tired of it and I get her know that she always is unpleasant and her response was because I always have a complaint.... wow! I dont complain about anything but what i should complain about.... today she threw away salmon because she is ignorant and rude. I didn't pay because she decided to offer me the salmon well done with the sauce on the side after they brought it out no where near well done. When I said fine she then said no because she's not gonna waste the food she already had made wrong....she would only offer me something else....I have spent $1000s of dollars here.... brought family....and i was treated so rude by this manager. I requested i formation for the owner or the corporate office or the manager over her and she refused. I will drive to Wu's house for better service from here on out

Yelp
A solid 3 stars out of 5. The place is very nice and clean. The dictation is beautiful and the ambience is very family friendly. Now for the service. It was very good. The staff were very nice and smiled all the time. I got complimented on my earrings by one of the waiters. The only problem was the food. It wasn't that good and the portions were not what you would expect. I had the seafood combo, it nearly had any seafood. It was more veggies than seafood. My husband had the walnut shrimp. It was ok nothing good. The huge disappointment was those cold and flavorless lamb sticks. They tasted like they were boiled, it was so bad. Might not comeback. This place did not exceed my expectations. The food is very average. Chinatown has better Chinese food restaurants.

Yelp
The wings weren't worth it for the price. They were small and tasted of frying oil that is way overdue for a change.

Yelp
One of the most underrated Asian restaurants in Bridgeport!! High quality food, good service, and surprisingly affordable prices. Had a lemon drop martini that was only $8 (cocktail specials)! Love the vibe and look of the place, this is definitely a new regular spot for me and my boyfriend!

Yelp
First time here and was delightfully impressed. There's free parking in the back. Started with the Calamari... not your typical Italian style but very tasty! Main meal was Korean Chap Chae Noodles w/beef... again a very tasty dish. 2nd meal was the Spicy Chili Chicken !!! It's a spicy rubbed chicken that lives to its name. Overall I really enjoyed this place. Would definitely recommend it and will be back soon to try other dishes.

Yelp
Went for brunch on a weekday with the wife and mom. Service was great Chloe the server was kind and attentive. Eggs were perfectly cooked. If you ever read my reviews you'll see I'm very picky with my eggs. French toast was great. Did not like the pancakes but Atmosphere was perfect.

Yelp
The only good thing about this place is the decoration. The service was terrible. They have two sides, the waitress just never came to our side. We had to walk over to the bar and find her. The skews we ordered were at best warm. The veggie was ok but you can hardly make Chinese veggie dishes bad. I would not recommend this place to any family or friends.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place as we live in the neighborhood, but it so blah! We ordered the wings with spicy Korean sauce...absolutely no spice. Barely any flavor. That really goes for all the food we ordered. Lots of cheaper Chinese place with similar so-so food.

Yelp
We've eaten here a few times. Everything is delish. This time we ordered the fixed price menu for 2 for $39 - 3 dishes - lightly breaded pork chops, green beans with fish and beef stew. All were very tasty. A hidden gem.

Yelp
Community minded business owner, wonderful food, unique, yet authentic. I had a board meeting there for a nonprofit that I am a part of and the service staff treated us wonderfully, and they seem very conscientious of the local community. The food was incredible.

Yelp
I give this restaurant a 5 out of 5 stars. This was me and my family's first time at AFusion. I would like to give a shoutout to one of the workers that made my day, Ryan. The food was fabulous. But the service was even better it was fantastic. First, (don't mind me) the pink hair woman complimented my notebook which also helps me take notes and summarize my review. Next, Ryan helped us by being our waiter; when we had empty plates he would come and getting the plates. He also told us if we needed anything he would be there and he was! He also recommended some dishes for us, so the next time we come we would try out the recommended dishes. Lastly, I would like to say the ambiance was really creative and had "trees" which was very realistic. In conclusion, I would recommend AFusion. They also have a robot! Yelp
I had a great meal. I ordered the spicy lamb from the entree. The place is clean and uniquely decorated. I had the Korean wings and were ordered as one of my favorites. If you're close to, stop by and put that staff to work. My iPhone camera is malfunctioning, so no I don't have picture but you'll be ok

Yelp
Went for brunch on Sunday and was looking forward to it. We sat in the sun room, which was pretty warm so we asked to open some windows. Now, I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that they have just recently opened and have a few kinks to work out, but here are some pointers. Have some sort of caddies or train the servers to set the tables up. We had to ask for sugar & milk for coffee, salt, silverware, an extra knife because it wasn't in the rolled silverware and extra syrup. Our poor waitress was running all over the place. The food was just meh-nothing to write home about. I had the avocado smoked salmon and my friend had the cinnamon french toast brunch. Not worth the price.

Barry Y.

Yelp
A new place in the neighborhood, gave it a try and I think that they can do better. Tried a few dishes and it was hit or miss, some dishes were good and some were not not so good. It's to be expected with a new place, they are working out the kinks, I think I should wait a little while before I go back.

Frank C.

Yelp
This place is just sloppy, which I attribute to being a new restaurant. The service was spotty, even while there were plenty of servers standing around on their cellphones by the cash register which is out of view of most diners. The food was hit-or-miss, and if you're looking for decent Asian food and are driving to this place, head a few block farther and go to Chinatown or the any number of places on Halsted...

Yelp
i love this place i come here every year for my birthday or when i meet up with my mom. been coming to this place for about 8 or 9 years. i love the food the sushi. and the bathroom is clean and nice. i love the eel sushi its so nice and warm i definitely recommend it. servers are nice and leave me on a full stomach. i loved and will definitely go there when i leave vermont.
