Cantonese Tong Sui Guide: Where to go for Black Sesame, Walnut Paste and More

"Expect long queues after meals and requests to share tables. The service at Ah Chew on a Friday night is brisk but the crowd doesn't take a toll on the quality of their desserts. The menu here is extensive; customers can choose from a bowl of black sesame paste to walnut, white fungus and papaya sweet soup to a steamed milk custard. Slightly more unconventional but equally popular are their durian and watermelon sago." - Alethea Tan

Queued for a bit at Ah Chew Dessert. Tried the hot rock sugar white fungus papaya, the red bean paste with lily bulb and added rice balls, and the peanut paste with rice balls. Everything was alright, but nothing really stood out. It’s fine if you are in the mood for something warm and sweet and there’s no queue. But in my opinion, it may not be worth the wait if you have to stand in line for it.

Google
Very Chinese nice delicious sweet. And not very expensive as I see that the sweets are served with a ceramic container. Very simple but easy to eat. Good Chinese atmosphere to stay. But not really recommended to stay for a long time. It is good for the small group of people (2-4).

Google
We came here in April 2022. The queue was super long. We had time so we decided to queue and waited for more than 30 minutes. The desserts were good.

Google
very crowded here but i got served pretty quickly after 10mins of queue. I ordered the classic mango dish with one ice cream. Tastes nice. You guys should come try it here when in SG

Google
Not up to standard. Came here to try this brand that’s famous for their mango sago. Sadly it just taste like what you can buy in typical food court, but they charge a premium price here. Worse part is they add ice into the mango sago (my first time seeing this). Why cant you just put in the fridge to cool rather than adding ice to dilute. Even worst part is that the ice amount they add is more than the sago they add. Is this mango ice or mango sago?? The buzzer don’t even work so the staff had to manually ask us to collect our dessert. 3 star because it does tastes like mango sago, just not for the price you are paying for.

Google
Ah Chew Desserts is probably considered one of the old-school dessert spots in Singapore. Queuing is pretty common here, I personally like their sago desserts. Prices are still quite reasonable, recommended :)

Google
Repeat customer here, This place serves soulful, home-styled desserts that reminds me of the older days. Where cafés were not over saturated and desserts were cheap, authentic and delicious. The pomelo here is to die especially the mango flavour one!! One of the must orders here. I've had most of the desserts here so I would say that the entire menu is actually good. Unlike other places only some desserts are worth trying, here everything is good. Most importantly it is rather cheap, and doesn't break your bank for sugar cravings after a heafty meal at bugis. This place is packed everyday, so expect some wait unless you come early.

Google
Can’t stress enough how much I like this place. I always order the stream milk or black sesame to keep things simple. Best of all, it’s in the heart of Singapore, dessert is affordable, and queues move relatively fast! Great place to chill after dinner 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Yelp
OK. If you need a dessert fix, COME HERE!! There are 2 lines like so many places in Singapore. One for "sit here", and one for "take-away". That said, eventually you end up in the same line to pay. We went to the "pay" line first, but since we were the only ones in line, and said we wanted to eat there, the guy sent us over to the lady to get seated. No wait, and we had a table on the sidewalk. Good timing. The line for 'eat here' grew tremendously while we ate. You order from the lady who walks by the table, and she writes down what you want. You take that to the pay station. For our second order, I just took one of the pieces of paper she had in a basket, and wrote down what we wanted, and took it up to the pay station. Then after a bit, you go to the collect station and get your amazing desserts. The menu is extensive, but a friend had been in Singapore and posted what he had here, so I order the same stuff. Mom tried both the ginger juice dessert and the mango with custard, and pushed the ginger my way....and let me have 1 BITE! of the mango. I loved the ginger dessert. BUT, naturally, we had to go get another mango custard dessert..maybe we got 2, and devoured it all. Her coffee was actually good. 4 desserts between the 2 of us later, we had no need for dinner. Seated on the sidewalk, we got to observe walkers-by and other interesting local flavor. It wasn't noise, except for a little inside the restaurant. I prefer the outside...but maybe only in winter. Maybe in the summer, the interior may be more inviting! When you are walking down the street trying to find this place, if there is not a line, then you may walk right on by. It's nondescript. Next time I'm in Singapore, I'm coming back, for sure.

Yelp
For Singaporean desserts Ah Chew is not only charmingly old school but also quite delicious and extremely affordable. I'm not a fan of the old world ambiance but the grass jelly and mixed fruit here is so good it's worth a stop. Service for dine in is go to the door on the left, they'll seat you, you write your order on the provided paper and go to the stall on the right with your order to order and pay. They will give you a buzzer for when your food is ready, which is usually very quickly. They have competitors but Ah Chew is still a favorite.

Yelp
A friend who lives in Singapore brought us here because I was saying how much I loved the Tangyuan in Taipei and the rest is history. There is definitely a line at all hours to sit there, but it is worth the wait. I ordered the grass jelly with lychee and the grass jelly was huge! Big chunks and such good flavor. Felt very natural and the lychee is a nice touch of sweetness to the bowl. I also ordered the ginger soup with rice balls which is almost the same as tangyuan in Taipei. The soup base is different, but the rice balls are the same and that is what I wanted. They are so warm and chewy. Bursting with flavor from the sesame and peanut fillings. The hot soup was so fresh, the ginger wasn't overbearing in flavor over everything else. I am so happy she showed us this place because it was so delicious.

Yelp
First time coming to Singapore and this was the recommended dessert place! It was so good! They offer lots of options from hot to cold. They also have durian options for durian lovers. When we got there we had to wait in line to get seated and then wait in another line to pay for our order before getting it. Service was quick and they expect you to be in and out so don't expect to stay here for too long.

Yelp
My cousin suggested this dessert place for the famous Mango dessert. Surprisingly, this location was only about 15 mins walk from my hotel. The line was super long on a Saturday night. I think a lot of locals come here. I waited for about 15-20 mins until ordering and taking it to our table. The desserts did not disappoint. The mango sago is so good. The mango is fresh and not overly sweet. My mom ordered her with durian and it elevated the dish even more. The watermelon jelly was very refreshing after our big meal. There's not that many tables for big group so definitely come at a less busy time if you have more than 5 people. The restaurant has AC and lots of vintage furnitures. I'd highly recommend anyone to try this!!!

Margaret O.

Yelp
We had 3 hot desserts: red bean, green bean with seaweed and ginger rice ball. Very disappointing! Green bean is so diluted, like drinking sugar water. all the desserts were like warm and not served hot. No ginger flavour but rice ball texture is good.Red bean is too mushy. I will never visit Ah Chew nor recommend to any friends. The long queue is simply not worth it.

Yelp
I look for desserts to try everywhere I go. I'm not a local, and I found Ah Chew Desserts after a bit of online searching. I read in some reviews that Ah Chew receives a lot of business, and that definitely appeared to be the case. I was standing in front of what seemed to be their main entrance, when an employee then guided me down the street a few feet and sat me at a table located through another entrance. I was a little confused, but it appeared that they have two separate areas for seating (as if they are in two store fronts). There is a large selection of desserts to choose from, which made it hard to narrow down what I wanted. They do currently appear to have many of their choices online, if you'd like to view the menu before deciding to come here with the possibility of having to wait for a while. There's a wide variety (i.e. sago, grass jelly, red bean, fresh milk, rice-based desserts) to choose from, and of these many choices, there are some that have different fruit options to select from. As I mentioned earlier, I had such a hard time deciding on my own order, I wouldn't dream of trying to choose or recommend a certain item for someone else; it's all about personal preferences. I can say that the two desserts I ended up picking were both delicious and refreshing. Neither were the most amazing desserts I'd ever had, but they were very good, and I'll return if I have the opportunity in the future.

Yelp
After a long day spent on Orchard, we wanted a sweet snack before dinner. I believe an SG IG'er posted about the desserts here and is how I found out about this place. What was nice was that it's a short 15 min walk from the Conrad. If it was super hot and humid, I probably would've just taken a Grab here but luckily it wasn't too hot when we decided to come check it out. As others have mentioned, this old school dessert shop can get busy and we only ended up waiting for about 5 mins before they seated us inside (seats inside have ac). Browsed the menu and then headed back to another line to order and pay. We ended up sharing 4 desserts as I wanted to try a few of them to compare with what we normally get in HK. Mango sago - very good and comparable to what we get in HK. What was interesting is they they throw in bits of ice to keep the dessert cold in the hot and humid weather. Black sesame soup w/ mochi balls - the black sesame soup was so so. I've definitely had better but the rice balls were tasty. I ended up getting 2 peanut filled and one black sesame mochi balls. Steamed egg white - decent but the ones you'd find in HK and Macau are better. Texture of the egg wasn't as smooth and creamy. Durian sago - not a fan of durian so didn't have any. The wife did mention that this was good. For the tourists out there, do bring cash unless you have some sort of electronic payment where you scan a qr code to pay (not sure how that one works).

Yelp
Loved coming here during my stay in Singapore. My Airbnb was literally on the other side of the street, so I found myself coming here more than once easily. The first time I went, I had their durian sago. SO CREAMY with cold chunks of durian in scooped form (which shouldn't be mixed up with ice cream because they have an extra option to add that!) and if you're a durian lover, I don't see you getting anything else but this. It was so refreshing in every way possible. The second time I went, I got the durian and mango sago with grapefruit pomelo! If I had to choose, I would pick the all durian sago again, but I loved both desserts! I can see why everyone loves coming here- both tourists and locals. The ordering system is pretty simple- first, get in the queue line for a table. Once you get your table, you go up again to order your dessert and they will bring it out for you! It's a pretty fast paced restaurant, where people come in and out constantly. There is an indoor restaurant with air conditioning, but I never minded sitting outside and people watching since it's such a lively street. I would love to have that taste of durian sago again!! This will be my go-to when I come back to Singapore....100%

Yelp
Everytime we've went back to SG, we've stopped by this place for dessert if we're shopping in Bugis. Good place to stop in for a quick hot or cold dessert. Never had to wait, but the tables are really close to each other where you can really hear other peoples convos and packed. I really like their cold mango sago with real mangos. They've a wide variety of dessert options, even with durian. We'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Local desserts (seemingly by way of Hong Kong) so think of items like rock sugar white fungus papaya soup but with lots of perennial favorites like mango sago and glutinous rice balls, there's probably something here for everybody. I appreciate that Ah Chew has a sparing hand with sugar and I like how the desserts are just sweet enough. Good variety of both cold and warm desserts. I like the mango sago and the black seasame paste. A heavy chinoiserie interior gives it a nice throwback charm. It can be crowded but folks move in and out pretty quickly. Worth a stop in if you're craving something sweet.

Yelp
Coming from Hong Kong, I can say the desserts here are on par with places there. The selection and prices are similar, as is the quality. There is a hot/cold section of the menu, a cold section, a durian section, and a drinks section. With a group of 8, despite a rather long queue, we only had to wait about 6 minutes and for a big table to be set up for us outside. Perfect for people watching and enjoying the open air. The servers were helpful, if not overly talkative nor friendly. I had the mixed fruits grass jelly from the cold menu (a really nice sized bowl full) for 5 SG (about $27 HKD at the time of writing.) It came with all the fruit options: peach, longan, watermelon, honeydew, and attap, excepting the more expensive ones (mango and strawberry). It was an excellent choice. Friends enjoyed their peanut soup with mixed glutinous rice balls, milk and egg custard with chocolate cookie crumbs, and sago desserts.

Yelp
Along the whole stretch, there are 3 dessert stores selling local style desserts. Yet this one in the middle of the row of shophouses, usually is most popular. It occupied 2 shop units. It was a Sunday afternoon, yet the place was packed and one had to queue up to wait for a table. About 10 minutes, we were showed to a table in front of the counter at the air con area. Worn out menu framed the table top. The outlet was decorated in a traditional chinese style, with traditional chinese red wood furniture around. Order was taken at the counter with payment together. Food was later served to the table. So remember to take note of table number before ordering. Mango Sago with Pomelo 杨枝甘露 ($4.50) Cooling down with a bowl of this. The standard seem to have dropped a lot. While refreshing, the taste was rather watered down. The ice was in little cubes, not shaved ice. Could not taste puree mango in the water. It tasted more like mango flavouring with evaporated milk. The only saving grace was the juicy sweet mango cubes. Gingko, barley, and bean curd skin soup ($3) in cold version My partner who was having it. remarked that it smelt a bit off and had rather hard gingko nuts (felt like bought off the shelves type). Maybe business getting too good these days.

Yelp
The traditional desserts here are delicious, and the mango sago especially is a must-try! However, try to get here earlier in the evening as the line starts to get long around 8pm (even if you're getting takeout). Desserts: - Mango sago: This is basically a cold mango-flavored soup with chunks of mango and mini clear tapioca. I think this is their signature dish, and I found it to be delicious! I really liked that the mango chunks were sweet and it overall had a nice and creamy taste. I would definitely recommend this for first-timers. - Red bean paste with ice cream: I quite liked this as well, but not as much as the mango sago. The red bean part is not very sweet, but mixes very well with the sweetness of the vanilla ice cream. Service/Wait: The wait here can get very long in the evenings. Note that there are 2 lines: 1 to get a table and 1 for ordering/takeout. Each can take 20+ minutes, so one tip to save some time is to have people wait in both lines so that you can order quickly after getting a table. Price ($): Prices here are very reasonable. Most of the desserts are around S$4-6 each.

Yelp
Cold or Hot sweet desserts they are #1. Best durian sago desserts & a must to visit when you're in Singapore
google avatar

Yelp
Great desserts and worth the often very long wait. Lots of great choices, although sago + mango + ice cream is probably the most popular and best.
google avatar

Christina N.

Yelp
Super excited to have tried the famous Ah Chew Dessert today! I'm glad I was not disappointed. I tried the Durian Mango Pomelo Sago while my friend had the mango pomelo sago. Both were really good! I like how the mango puree was thick and sweet with minimal ice. Comparatively, other dessert stalls in the vicinity was mostly shaved ice with minimal mango puree.
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious Asian decent. Six of us went and enjoyed all the dishes. Very long lines worth the wait.
google avatar

Charles Ryan T.

Yelp
Dessert is something I look forward to after each meal. I always believe that one should enjoy a proper meal and a dessert after that. However, as you guys know, working life sometimes don't permit that so fortunately on this free evening, I came here wth a couple of friends to enjoy the Asian desserts. I have been here before but I noticed a change in the menu; more variety now! Not a surprise since there are at least another 2 more dessert places near this vicinity. This dessert place is often crowded with long queue especially after dinner time. What caught my attention is the dessert menu and it took me a while before I decided what I want. Got myself a nice bowl of watermelon and mango sago - pretty delicious and it's quite value for money. I would definitely come back again to try others. Overall, I recommend this to anyone who is into dessert. This is one of the better ones in Singapore!
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
This dessert place opens till late; came here on a Tuesday night about 1030pm. Queues are long here and they have an inefficient system. First you queue for a table, and then you get it, then with the table number, you queue for your order. What if you came alone? You can also queue for a table and then get your friend to order, but take note that you need a table number when you place your order. What an awful waste of time. We got a durian sago and a yam paste, which were quite abysmal. The durian sago was small for the price - $6, and had a dollop of low quality durian paste doled in. Yam paste, well.... thin, very sweet, with a few miserly ginkgo nuts. Yikes.
google avatar

Fanh T.

Yelp
It is my first visit. I ordered the cold Gingko, Barley, Beancurd skin soup. Gingko is obviously from those pre packed ones u can get from supermart. It's not well cooked coz it's very hard. The soup does not have any fragrant. I also tried the mango sago with Pamelo. The soup is very diluted. There's no rich flavour of mango.
google avatar

Gracia O.

Yelp
Ah Chew Desserts is immensely popular amongst the younger crowd that frequents the Bugis area. Despite the late hours, there is a constant queue snaking outside the counter. It can get a little frustrating, though the turnover is quite short. The shop has expanded its seating and there's a wait staff to regulate the never ending customer flow. Then again, the tables are still rather small, and it would be difficult for a big group to find seats. If you do manage to find a spot to park yourself at, the ever popular dessert is the mango pomelo with sago, a killer combination of both sweet and sour. On a personal front, I do wish the dessert was just served chilled, without the ice bits that cause it to thin out as the ice melts. Other desserts worth trying are the black sesame paste - for black hair! and peanut paste. The peanut paste is a little on the thin side though. Price wise is fair, and it's a great place to chill on a late night out in town, though it's not the ideal spot to linger.
google avatar

Barbie S.

Yelp
Worth the wait in line. It moves fast. My favorite is the Mango Saga (iced). The portions are smaller than Dessert First (across the street) but the mango flavor was more intense. PROS: Mango Saga CONS: Always a line at night
google avatar

Joanne G.

Yelp
Packed every night, this seems like the place to go in Bugis for traditional desserts. For the most part we all enjoyed it- we tried most of the durian options and they were delicious! Crowded, but the line out front moves fast.
google avatar

Marissa W.

Yelp
WHAT TO DO: Take a look at the menu and pick your dessert. Take a look at your table number. Remember it! Go to the cash register and a worker will take your order. Then your desserts will come to your table. GREAT DESSERTS HERE!! Indoor and outdoor seating. Request indoor seating if you prefer, you may just have to wait a little longer. The cold desserts are very refreshing. Grandpa guy usually helps seat people. He makes sure you get a table. And he'll kick you out if you're just sitting there talking. Don't take it to heart. People are waiting to eat desserts too :)
google avatar

Wanida K.

Yelp
I've been here several times but last night's visit was disappointing. First they got our order wrong - we ordered 2 mango pomelo, they served 1 mango pomelo, 1 mango sago. Then we found hair in our mango pomelo. The most upsetting point was that my almond paste was clumpy and much too sweet. My friend remarked he had never seen almond paste that looked that way. I'm giving 3 stars considering the good experiences I had previously but it's going to take a while for me to want to revisit. The place gets crowded so it's faster if you takeaway.
google avatar

Fang Wei G.

Yelp
A popular Chinese dessert place which can have a long queue. Once inside, you find yourself in a very noisy environment. The service was not really friendly. Food wise I had mango sago which had a decent portion of ingredients but the taste was a bit too sweet for my liking. I'm not sure if the rave about this place is justified.

J Q.

Yelp
100% overrated, what's up with internet people!! It's overcrowded, the staffs are not friendly coz there are too much work not enough staffs, they are all under stress overloaded with work. it takes forever for the food to come and for me personally I cannot tell much of a difference between
google avatar

Melissa Y.

Yelp
I always love coming here for a post late night movie snack.. They open till midnight though their new outlet at novena closes at 11pm. Relatively "cheap" desserts in comparison to the offerings in Bugis Junction and you can't go wrong with a bowl of cold mango sago with pomelo or watermelon! :) it's so refreshing! :D I just wish that they had some munchies to go with!
google avatar

Vanessa N.

Yelp
Mango sago is delicious! (mine was with pomelo and a scoop of vanilla ice cream) My friend had the egg pudding which I thought was alright - nothing too special. Atmosphere wise it is a little loud and more suitable for casual gatherings with friends. Probably not first date material :) We didn't have to wait in line for a table which is probably why I love it even more.
google avatar

Ancy N.

Yelp
Don't quite get why the crowd and the long lines, especially after dinner! It is decent, but nothing life-changing, nothing much worth the calories for. I guess I'll attribute it to the cheapest dessert place you can get post dinner in that area. I would eat it, but not if I have to wait in line.
google avatar

Nick N.

Yelp
It was quite a long queue around 6-9pm. I arrived at 10:30pm and didn't have to wait so long. Here is how it work at the An Chew, you take the queue then an uncle will guide you to the available table. Remember your table number and have look at the menu right on table's surface, pick your favorite dish together with a code which is started with an alphabet & a number behind then proceed to cashier, inform him your table number and your dish's code, pay the bill, then back to your table and your dish will be served at the table right after. I tried the D2 which is durian sauce with mango sago and pomelo. The durian sauce smells good, a bit creamy. The sweet of mango balances with the sour of pomelo together with the good smell of durian sauce made the dish is tasty and delicious. Then I tried the O2 which is Chinese herbal jelly in chestnut sauce with eggs. No matter what is your favorite asian dessert is, I'm sure you will be satisfied by An Chew. Not sweet as other asian desserts.

Yelp
Liang Seah Street has quite a number of dessert stores to throw us off our bearings but this is the ORIGINAL one and I still come here despite the atrocious parking and perplexing lack of seats. They have a crazy variety of desserts on their menu but I recommend the mango sago, yam sago and the chin chow. All cold, no less. There are probably less than 5 days in Singapore that truly warrant for a hot dessert. I like that they get the sweetness just right and you can really taste the fresh ingredients (mango/yam). More often than not, I find myself gagging at a concoction of various disgusting sugar concentrates when I have desserts so this is a more than welcome change. If you have a car, do yourself a favour and takeaway unless you aren't one to get grouchy waiting for a seat.
google avatar

Domu A.

Yelp
This review is about mango sago with pomelo. "I taste Chinese herbs," said my Japanese visitor. One spoonful later, I realised that she was referring to the taste of underripe pomelo. They were generous with the mango, but I propose that the name be changed to "Mango soup with cubed mango, a teaspoon of sago, and bits of ice." Ca fait rien. I'll be back.
google avatar

Lu Y.

Yelp
I'm here visiting Singapore, and I've been here twice in one week now! Ah Chew is downright delicious! I know previous reviews are iffy, but from a foreigner's (non-Asian) standpoint, this place is truly awesome! Service: Despite super long lines in the evenings, the service is pretty quick! If you go in the afternoon, it's VERY fast! And the old man at the door seating people is really kind. Ambience: Try getting a seat in the dining area - it's decorated in the ancient Chinese decor which temporarily takes you away from this modern city. Also, they use real ceramics, which is more than you can say about most dessert shops. Food: The red bean ice is refreshing, anything with durian is an acquired taste, the black glutinous rice is a must have with rice balls, and the fresh steamed egg with milk are very smooth (try with various toppings)! Thus far, this has been one of my favorite Asian dessert places in Singapore!
google avatar

Yelp
Went back to have the durian sago which was so good.. Service has definitely improve as well!
google avatar

Huiyin S.

Yelp
The original Chinese dessert store at Liang Seah Street, Ah Chew sells all sorts of Chinese dessert like almond paste, peanut paste, green bean soup, mango sago, the list goes on (there are 44 types of desserts on the menu and you can choose from hot or cold). Everyone is packed closely together and the crowds keep spilling in. It is a chaotic scene indeed but no one minds as they focus their whole attention on the delicious bowl of dessert in front of them. Come early if you want to avoid the crowds as it usually starts filling up at around 7.15pm.
google avatar

Jac S.

Yelp
This famous store at Liang Seah street is where you head to for traditional desserts and is usually quite packed. Cold desserts, hot desserts, you name 'em and you can pick 'em here. It really does get crowded and squishy, so eat your dessert quick and off and away you go!
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
The Mango Sago with Pomelo is definitely a must order here. It is flavourful and the serving is big. They are not stingy with the amount as well as loads of bits of mango filled the bottom of the bowl. Recommended to have it with the sour pomelo! The Original Fresh Milk Steamed Egg is an another must try. It is smooth and full of taste. As compared to other dessert places, the distinctive taste of egg in this is very apparent.
google avatar

Samuel L.

Yelp
Ah Chew Desserts is a Chinese dessert shop that has been around for ages and made it to the top of my favorites list. They serve hot and cold traditional desserts with a modern touch. For example, you are allowed to add a scope of ice cream with certain cold desserts and they offer modern twists like Fresh Milk Steamed Egg White with Chocolate Cookie. Of course, they also sell traditional desserts like Almond Paste, Rice Glutinous Balls, Gingko Barley and Beancurd Skin and Honeydew Sago. My all time favorite dessert here is the Mango Pomelo Sago. It is a cold dessert with creamy mango puree, mango cubes and sago. The dessert is also topped with pomelo pulp, which adds a bit of tartness to the sweet dessert. There is the option of adding a scoop of ice cream but I chose not to since the dessert was rich enough on its own. The only downside was the small ice cubes in the dessert that was pretty much annoying.
google avatar

Secret C.

Yelp
Very near to bugis cube where we work. The dessert is awesome. Used to eat it like almost every two or three weeks. Now it's just so convenient since it's just next door to us! The mango sago is my top choice. Next is the chin chow, follow by honey dew sago, egg pudding, red bead... Portion is just nice and it's good if you have a group of friends to visit this store.

Yelp
so-so dessert at this overhyped tongshui cafe along purvis street. this place draws long queues and large crowds - and has so much business, in fact, that they stretch over two storefronts on this 'ip-and-'appening street in the bugis area. it's well-known for their dishing up of hong kong desserts (almost every blog will point you here) but I'm going to raise a dissenting hand here - what is that hype all about? my steamed egg custard wasn't that smooth (and took an unbelievably long time to arrive), and all the other desserts that arrived at our tables didn't impress neither. I'd say this was on par with the mei hong yuen dessert chain that is much easier to find (and easier to get a seat at) - it feels commercial, and not in a good way neither.

Yelp
What better place to get traditional Chinese desserts other than at Ah Chew! This is a great dessert place that is only a stone's throw away from Bugis Junction. I love the yam paste, sesame paste and mango sago. You can have it either hot or cold, according to your liking. Personally, I prefer the hot ones. One thing I do dislike about this place is that it can get pretty cramped on busy days, especially during evenings. It gets so cramped you just want to quickly finish off your dessert and move off to another place. Other than that, it's quite a sweet treat!

Yelp
Late one night, my husband and I were craving for HK style cantonese desserts. Google brought us here. How is it then we've only discovered this establishment? Singapore has surprisingly few dessert cafes that open late at night, unlike HK. I had the bean curd skin and barley with gingko nut, which was comforting and not overly sweet. A lot of bean curd skin and a gingko nut (which I don't eat, oops). Husband had the durian dessert with sago and ice-cream and he loved it! We had a very good version of it in HK (cong sao desserts), and this came close. Great option for late night desserts. I just wished that the desserts were more chilled. If they were even colder, that would have been perfect, particularly on hot sticky nights. Pretty crowded spot so do queue at the right place, wait for your allocated seat then order at the cash register. No time to be blur!
