I'm not usually a fan of all these "fusion" places that seem to be popping up everywhere, but I was pleasantly surprised by the food here.
The Poke nachos were my fave. The combination of flavors were on point, especially the sweet soy based sauce that added a delightful twist. The chips were a real highlight too, super crunchy with a satisfying bite.
The Dan Dan noodles had nutty/sesame undertones that I really enjoyed. What's even more impressive is that they managed to create this dish while keeping it entirely vegan.
On the flip side, the goat cheese rangoons didn't hit the mark for me. There was just a bit too much goat cheese, and the gaminess was a bit overpowering. Dialing it back a notch would probably make them more enjoyable.
I was very disappointed to learn that the tempura battered soft shell crab has been transitioned to shrimp, all for the same price. Felt like I was being catfished!
Service was ok. Because of the drought, some businesses are trying to cut back on giving tap water unless you ask. After their spiel, gave us options for tap, sparkling, and still water. Trying to seem like good humans, we initially went for the sparkling water lol. After one bottle each, we went for the tap, and my co-resident ruefully uttered, "I've never felt so guilty for asking for tap water!"
All in all, I had a memorable dining experience at Ah Sing Den. The fusion concept, which usually raises an eyebrow for me, was executed quite well. Coupled with the intriguing ambiance that blends Victorian and steampunk elements, this place truly offers more than just a meal - it offers an experience.
